    4 out of 5 stars A great `difficult third` album.......2004-08-10

Do not believe that other reviewer, he doesn't know what he's talking about! This is another great album from Dan Reed and co. Slam is my favorite DRN album, but this one is almost as good - and much better than the first album. Funky, groovy, poppy and melodic... in other words good music.

1 out of 5 stars Dan Reed made his bed real bad, now he has to lie in it.......2003-12-10

Nothing of what made the debut album good is present on this forgettable effort. The opening track "Baby now I" is a decent one in comparison to the rest of the lousy material. What happened? Maybe Dan Reed got too calculated but his attempt to write hit songs fell flat on the floor. Was it all a big fake? The store for used cd's in my town have several copy's of "The heat" and I guess that says a lot.

5 out of 5 stars just not enough room...........2002-11-17

there's just not enough room on an 80-minute cd to put all of Dan Reed Network's best songs. this is, however, a good compilation of songs from a prolific songwriter and his hard-hitting, funky, rockin' band....

there are a few cool things here that you can't get on their 3 studio releases, a highlight being Nuno Bettencourt (Extreme) playing with Dan on "long way to go".

buy this cd, and if you can get your hands on "Dan Reed Network", "Slam", and "the Heat", do it! because if you're really serious about experiencing the whole DRN collection, you'll want all the discs available; and that includes "Live At Last", (which is whole other review all together!)

5 out of 5 stars Where have you gone?.......2003-04-08

My favorite band! I've seen these guys live 3 times, as the opening act for Eddie Money, at Bumbershoot, and at Parkers in Seattle. They are incredible on CD, but even better live! Dan Reed went into the crowd at Parkers and did some grinding with my girlfriend to the song "Leave Your Hat On", she still talks about it to this day. It is a crime that they didnt have the commercial success that so many lesser bands have had. Cruise Together, and Under My Skin are my personal favorites, but you cannot go wrong with any song on this album, it has it all. Spread the word about how good they are, maybe they will make a comeback. We miss you guys!

    5 out of 5 stars A REAL TREASURE !.......2001-10-22

Sadly, the boys have gone their seperate ways - however, thankfully, we have this 2 CD-set as a 'memory' of "what was".

I was fortunate enough to receive a copy of this truly excellent collection of 'live' recordings from Dan Pred ! It captures exactly what DRN were - absolutely awesome !!

    Miss you - guys !

5 out of 5 stars Awesome. Just plain AWESOME........2001-01-04

I've been in radio now for well over a decade and in that time I've been fortunate to see a LOT of concerts...you name it, from Van Halen to ZZ Top to Bruce Willis (yes he DOES perform) and of course, from my home town of Portland, Oregon, The Dan Reed Network. I have seen these amazing guys perform 3 separate times over the years, and quite honestly they are one of the top 5 bands I have EVER seen live. The Dan Reed Network is bigger in Europe than they are here in the States, and in '90 they were picked to be the opening act for the Rolling Stones on their European tour and to celebrate, they staged a free concert in Pioneer Courthouse Square in downtown Portland...yes, I said FREE. It ranks to this day as my all-time favorite concert. If you are a fan of techno-pop with a very pronounced rock edge to it, The Dan Reed Network is definitely a MUST HAVE.

Their CD 'SLAM' is another on my list of all-time favorites. I just CANNOT recommend these guys enough--and it has NOTHING to do with being a hometown prejudice, BELIEVE me. These guys are really THAT GOOD. If you haven't heard 'Rainbow Child' or 'Stronger Than Steel' you have yet to hear two of the greatest power ballads of the past 20 YEARS--and the biggest crime in music over the past couple of decades is that The Dan Reed Network never received the notoriety they so VERY MUCH deserved. But that isn't all, you want dance tracks, or the incredibly catchy 'Under My Skin' and 'Tiger In A Dress' and

'Make It Easy' are some of the most radio-friendly tunes I have ever heard that did NOT make it on the radio. IF you EVER get the chance to see these guys live, do NOT pass it up. It has been a loooong time since I have seen them, and to be frank, I don't even know if they are even still together, but if you can get a hold of this LIVE CD, fork out the $18.00 'cuz it IS worth it. (oh yeah, grab 'Slam', too--it's one of THE best).

    5 out of 5 stars Kickin'.......2000-08-03

What can I say? This cd rocks! I can't believe these guys didn't make it HUGE! I've been a fan since 1988, and they have never disappointed me! BUY THIS CD!

5 out of 5 stars come back DRN.......2000-07-13

Is there no justice in Rock music?Dan Reed has everything;great riffs ,dynamics ,melodies to die for, image and philosophy. These days albums can be 60 to 80 percent dross and yet sell by the truckload .Why did the record companies let this band fade ? Surely the time is right for DRN to grab this industry by the balls and give us all a lift.I've already ordered the latest DRN album-"Adrenaline Sky".If none of you have heard DRN ,find any album with "Rainbow Child" on it and ask yourself "How did we live without this music for so long?"

5 out of 5 stars One of my Top-3 fav records of All-Time..........2007-03-08

I grew up in Portland, Oregon where the Dan Reed Network first formed, but I have to admit that I never really got into their stuff until after their 2nd record came out--which of course is Slam. I have worked in radio for almost 17 years now, and I have been fortunate to have seen more than my share of live concerts...and two of my top 5 favorite are live performances by the Dan Reed Network (for what its worth, my #1 choice is the Eagles--hands down the best I have ever seen). My first exposure was a free concert they did in downtown Portland as they celebrated being hand-picked by Bon Jovi to open up for them on their European leg of their world tour (I could be wrong, but I think it was the summer of 1989 or '90). Man what a great show that was. I was hooked instantly.

I immediately went out and bought their first album, and by the end of the day I grabbed Slam, too. What can I say? A very electronic-sounding hard rock band is a great way to describe their overall sound. Kind of if Prince merged with Def Leppard...yeah, I realize that is an odd combination, but TRUST me, it works. Working in radio we look for songs that have that instant listener appeal, and I can name at least 5 songs that were never released to the American charts--but SHOULD HAVE BEEN. My personal fav has GOT to be 'Rainbow Child', a song I dedicated to my daughter the night of her birth in 1992. Immediately after the song finished, I got a TON of calls wanting to know, 'Who sang that song??' Not many people in Idaho had been exposed to the Dan Reed Network, and THAT'S a shame. Radio friendly is a great way to describe this record. From the title track to 'Tiger In A Dress' to a song that my wife and I have agreed is *Our Song*, 'Stronger Than Steel'. If you want rockin' dance appeal, check out, 'Under My Skin' and the list goes on. Once again, I am stumped that these boys never hit the mainstream the way that others did who are obviously less talented. Take a listen to this record and you'll know why. I don't even know if the guys are even still together, but if you EVER get the opportunity to see them perform, you absolutely MUST buy a ticket. Outstanding is the best word I can use, in fact the only band I can honestly say sounded better on stage were The Eagles. If I were stranded on an island and had to pick five CD's to bring with me, 'Slam' is an absolute no-brainer for my personal list. I could listen to this record over and over for a very long time--and had my son not accidentally broke my original CD, I would STILL be listening to it today. Absolutely AWESOME.

    3 out of 5 stars 3.5 stars - much better than the S/T debut.......2006-06-23

Marketed as a more committed, rockier version of the DRN, this album is a real growth. The title itself gives fair warning.

The first two cuts are darn fine funky hard rock. If you listen to the two of 'em and like what you hear then buy this album. There are a number of rockers on offer here with a number of more musically spacious numbers. Dans vocals are still more spoken than sung and there is once again a slightly off-kilter electronic feel to the sound but less so than the debut. The overal production is better and fuller here.

The guitars on this album are allowed more spotlight indicating a more rock direction, obviously the bands target audience after millions of teenage girls DIDN'T go and buy their earlier stuff. Yet the rear cover photo is more pretty boy and polished.

Musically the guys aren't in the same ballpark as Living Colour, the funk here is more 2nd hand. But they were starting to carve their own niche with this record, critics at the time falling over themselves to tout them as the next big thing, even forgiving such silly stunts as Dan cutting off all his hair to protest rock cliches (true story!).

Definitely buy this album if you want to explore DRN as it's easily more accessable for the first time listener than the S/T debut.

2 out of 5 stars Snatching defeat from the jaws of victory.......2006-06-23

A record with a lot of open spaces in the arrangements, allowing a sense of space and restraint and an air of musicianship and also letting the vox take centre stage. This, DRN's debut, had the advantages of a good production team - Bruce Fairbairn, Mike Fraser and recorded at Little Mountain Sound, Vancouver. Well it was all set for the band to hit the proverbial home run.

But the music didn't support the team. The whole thing is fairly mellow, more generic rock 'n' roll rather than hard rocker. No problem there really, looking like hard rockers and actually sounding as heavy as a soggy tissue was a fairly standard ploy circa '87.

The numbers like Baby Don't Fade where the band utilise full bodied instrumentation work best. These guys were one of the few soft rockers to effectively mix a funky/groove thing with the hard rocker image. Rock You All Night Long is a nother tune that shows how this formula can work.

The main problem here are is the bands inability to get on with the job at hand. There is very little commitment to anything here. The overt attention paid to the racial mix within the band also gets on my nose. Just get on with it! I'm not gonna like your record just cos you look like a meeting of the UN! But the whole 'happy rainbow' nonsense that pervaded so much of the promo for this band grated. The play for acclaim by allegedly being alternative to the hair metal acts of LA was also kind of [...] So my judgement of the music is perhaps a little tainted by the marketing push we were subjected to at the time.

Alternative - ha - the main alternative thing here compared to other pop rockers is the annoying, overly electronic backbeat emanating from the rhythm section.

Big things were tipped for this mob but this debut needed more get up and go.

4 out of 5 stars Dan Reed Network.......2005-02-16

I stumbled upon this LP again when I was rooting though the records I left behind at my parents' house when I left for university. I couldn't actually remember what it sounded like. I only remembered that I was really into it for a while, and that Ritual was the kind of tune that wouldn't leave me alone.

I was apprehensive when putting it on the record player. Some albums I used to be into have turned out to sound like garbage after listening to them almost two decades later.

Boy, was I ever not disappointed. This entire album rocks (shame the others don't). And surely this band was just a little too ahead of their time -- to funky for the Bon Jovi crowd. Too rock for Prince fans. But it has aged well. A little piece of rock obscurity that you'll never regret owning.

3 out of 5 stars No doubt - this is the finest from Dan Reed.......2003-12-10

The debut album by Dan Reed is a real fine effort. The music is rock with a touch of funk, and it's melodic and catchy most of the time. This album is by far the band's best and I won't be surprised if songs like "Ritual", "Get to you", "Forgot to make her mine", and "I'm so sorry" got stuck in your head. When this album was released it sure felt like a fresh breath. Too bad Dan Reed and the guys kinda lost it along the way.

            5 out of 5 stars Take 1 part Journey -- 2 parts Prince -- mash it together.......2003-01-29

WOW!! A band which scorches right out of the CD player onto your lap -- this is one of the great mysteries of the late 80's and early 90's why this band did not become huge.

Don't repeat the mistake. Listen to some of these tracks on your Real Player and then click "Add to Cart".

            5 out of 5 stars nightshade94.......2002-09-02

Back in my last years of high school I had the pleasure of seeing this band live in a small collage gym in Mt.Vernon Washington. The weather had been horrid they were advising people not to travel, so even though it was nearly sold out hardly anyone showed. Rather than cancel the show about 50 to 70 people got a private performance. Man they rocked. I was 16 and still remember them talking to us before and after the show, as though we had all known each other for years.
The music though wow! My favorite song on the collection album is "Rainbow child" But I am quite sure any music by them will be awsome. Twelve years later my 8 year old loves them and is begging me to buy a Cd because the tape is so worn out.....you will NOT be diappionted. They rock!
