Amazon.com essential recording

The gruesome details surrounding Tupac's third solo offering are enough to give any music fan the willies. Released when Tupac was in jail serving time for a rape conviction and just after his recovery from being shot-up gangland-style at a recording studio, this was his most introspective piece of work to date. The heavy-hearted album opens up with a radio commentary describing the circumstances surrounding his shooting, and then plunges headfirst into Pac's infatuation with death. "So Many Tears," "Death Around the Corner," and "If I Die 2Nite" are all dark, eerily prophetic tunes that lend credence to widespread theories which suggest that Pac anticipated his impending death. The perpetually thugged-out wonder reveals a more benevolent side when it comes to gender and family issues. On "Dear Mama"--a fitting tribute to his mother recorded in the "Keep Ya Head Up" vein--Pac takes listeners into the loving recesses of his heart, while on "Can U Get Away," he echoes similar respectful sentiments to black womynkind. This is probably Pac's most progressive issues-oriented release before he signed to Death Row and became a full-blown thug. --Dalton Higgins

5 out of 5 stars Pac's Very Best!.......2007-06-09

2Pac made his best album with Me Against the World. He pours out a lot of emotion into this album and he really lets you feel the dark atmosphere that he felt surrounded by after being shot. 2Pac is the very best hip hop artist at getting to your emotions and this album does it better than any other.

5 out of 5 stars one of the best.......2007-05-24

first off i have to tell MTV SUPPORTER that any true music fan knows that mtv has the worst music taste and only has artist that can hopefully sell. sorry we are not all avril lavene or brittney spears fans but you have no idea what you are talking about. Even if you were to take a cruse thro berkely or usc you will find some of the smartest people on the planet can appriciate 2pac.A great album by the greatest rapper period.

5 out of 5 stars Definitive 'Pac.......2007-04-24

This CD is what established Pac as an ARTIST, rather than just a rapper. This is a look into the windows of Pac's soul. Hip-Hop/Rap doesn't get much better than this. Pac proved the diversity, range and depth he had as a Hip Hop artist. This CD actually shined light on the genre!!! My favorite tracks: ALL OF THEM, but the ones in the heaviest rotation are: So Many Tears, and Temptations! Buy this and enjoy!!!

5 out of 5 stars My best Pac album.......2007-04-10

Hence the title, some Pac fans like this the best, others give the crown to All Eyez On Me, Makaveli or even one of the first two. Well all Pac's albums (before the posthumous ones) are fantastic so i definitely respect those opinions. But for me this is the one i listen to the most (which is at least twice a day!!!)

There isn't a single dissapointment here. All the beats are excellent, the guest appearances aren't that bad and limited and Pac shines all the way through. Now i'm not going to review all the tracks as that would take up alot of space. So i'll just comment on my top 5, which are
1. Dear Mama -Absolute genious!!! My favourite Pac song ever!!!
2. F*ck The World - A very haunting beat with 4 short verses of Pac letting out all his anger (he was going through some very hard things back then as you know)
3. Young N*ggaz - A nice jazzy beat while Pac goes through his young days to his present. A brilliant hook aswell.
4. So Many Tears - Known as the darkest rap song ever.
5. Can U Get Away - Alot of people consider this the weakest off the album, but i love it.

Honorable mention: Me Against The World - One of Pac's most instrospective tracks ever

Anyway peace and rest in peace to

Tupac Amaru Shakur - 1971-1996 (We all miss ya)

5 out of 5 stars Sweet!.......2007-05-19

This CD is one of the hottest, with Tupac lyrics over beats like: hold up by dr. dre, if u dont give a damn gone throw it up by young bloodz, on my block by scarface, and much much more... the best thing is it sounds like the beats were made just for those lyrics by Pac!

5 out of 5 stars from beyond.......2006-08-14

I have been a tupac fan since i was 15 and i will tell you this is a great jumpoff for a novice listener, and a great retrospective for a fan. You can say tupac was the best rapper ever give that title to a mortal like big or jay-z. Tupac was a poet of our times, even the hardest thug has to feel a not in his throught when hearing him flow on the the baby don't cry remix about a girl being atacked. This mixtape does justice to his quotes and should have been the soundtract to the movie instead of the cliche'ed one that was released. After seeing the movie and hearing this tape, if you are open minded, you will see why so many think he was assasinated and not just shot in a drive by. This man could very well have settled down and became a central figure in American politics. If ron regan can be president then Pac could have been a national figure easily. This album is a great place to start.

3 out of 5 stars good idea. .......2006-04-06

i, too looked for this after reading what chris rock said about it in rolling stone. a few songs are okay, a few songs are really weak (as weak as a pac tune can get), and a few are just filler.

however, a few stand out. such as "hold up," an entire song based upon nate dogg's line in dre's "the next episode." it has this really tight beat that sounds kinda like old old snoop dogg. before he dropped the doggy. if you're blazin' phillies, its good stuff to cruise to. additionally, "fight music" is a strong track, with pac flowing over "hate me now" by puffy and nas. it's really good because the beat is prolific, powerful, and quite emotional. the particular pac lines they choose are equally as powerful, giving one the feeling as though this is the original. "me against the world" is pac over dre's "still d.r.e." beat, which is pretty cool (except for the female chorus vocals). i mean, that's a killer beat no matter who rhymes over it. i like dre's much better, but this was a good mix. "thug in me" sounds kinda like something pac would've done when he was alive. it's a decent filler track, i suppose.

the best thing this cd has to offer is tupac's personal opinion that starts the track "revolution."

he says "this country was built on gangs. you know. i think this country still is run on gangs. republicans. democrats. the police department. the fbi. the c.i.--those are gangs. you know what i mean? the correctional officers. i had a correctional officer tell me straight up 'we're the biggest gang in new york state.' straight up."

hearing these words really made me remember how great tupac was. he had a lot of strong messages that unfortunately too little of his audience could actually hear. if you're a tupac fan and have most of his cds, then yeah. add this one to your collection because you'll probably dig it. if you're not a diehard pac fan, then maybe just consider it for fact that its pac with hot new beats. sometimes it works, sometimes it doesn't. but definitely get this before you shell out $XX for Death Row's "nu-mixx klassics." this one is better.

5 out of 5 stars Delivers what it promises........2006-03-31

I decided to pick this up after hearing that Chris Rock had put it in his top 25 Rap CD's of all time...
This mixtape does make you relise something though. All of Pac's beats on his old songs seem tailered for him, cause with his style of rapping, you cant just put any beat in, even the hottest beats may sound wack with him...
I own every pac album from when he was alive, and his greatest hits, and there was still some verses in here I hadnt hered, so it is a good buy... All the tracks flow together, so it sounds like a real mixtape. The best song is the second one, Revolution Feturing Busta Rhymes, over that one really hot P. Diddy beat ( Forgot the name ) And what is cool is that verse is from Military Minds, and even though I found the original song wack, they make it really really good, even better than some of his greatest hits... The Dj's did a good job... Bottom line, if you are a Pac fan get this! I will soon be getting the B.I.G. one too...

This release showcases the band's ever evolving ability to go from hard hitting dance floor smashers to top 40 radio hits. While still rooted in electronics with signature synth lines, the new album welcomes early member Anders Odden back by exhibiting more guitar work than on the previous two releases. Apoptygma Berzerk re-invents itself with every release, and this CD is no exception.

1 out of 5 stars I hate it!.......2007-07-12

I simply can't believe how far Stephen Groth has gone into the mainstream. I guess he's always been heading in that direction, but the qaulity of his music has changed drasticly with this album. I had heard that this was ganna be bad, but I didn't think it would be a One Star kind of bad!!! Woa!! It's total Top 40 pop slop meets emo or Indie poser or some kind of lame attempt at selling out. If he stays on this path I'm ganna have to stop supporting him...this album truly bites!

5 out of 5 stars A great album, although radically different from the usual Apop sound.......2007-02-27

OK, let's get one thing clear. This CD hasn't got much in common with the previous attempts of Apoptygma for international recognition. Many people out there accuse Stephan of selling out the "Apop Sound" and maybe that's right, but the bottomline for me is that 'You And Me Against The World' is a truly great album with wonderful tunes.
The guitars have taken precedence over the keyboards allright, but the songwriting is so inspired and the production so impeccable that, all in all, you'd be a fool to ignore this album just because it's different from the previous.
Listen to 'Back On Track', 'Love To Blame', 'Lost In Translation' and if you don't find yourself singing along with the lyrics in 5 minutes... then OK, feel free to discard this disc and listen to the Apocalyptic Manifesto again:)

3 out of 5 stars Not bad. Ever changing is the Apop........2007-02-03

The other review here can be a little harsh, if not ignorant. As a fan of some of the previous albums, I too was a little disappointed in the turn that the band has chosen to take with their 2005 effort. I do prefer the heavier reliance on synths than guitars and the heavy vocal effects.
YAMATW isn't bad. It's just a turn of style. The heavier synth influenced rock has been making its way around the corner with The Killers and fellow synth band Shiny Toy Guns (check out all 3 versions of their freshman release...STG is former Cloud2Ground gurus Jeremy Dawson and Chad Petree.)
If adapting is what is ALLOWING the artists that we have grown to love to continue to make music successfully and BE ABLE TO AFFORD to make more, why are we condemning them? Afterall, isn't that what smart business sense is all about?
I understand the perceived feeling of these "sellouts" that a few of the synthier electronic bands are doing; I love anything synth. But being a good artist means that they know how to evolve.
Eat or be eaten. It's simple.
Get this album if you are a true fan of Apop. If you like the new emo synth rock hybrid, buy this one. If you're a rotten baby with his thumb in his [..]to anyone who wants to experiment, save your money.

1 out of 5 stars A-Poop-Tygma has gone Berzerk!.......2007-01-26

This is the worst album ever made! This is sooooooooo far from the verry good Apoptygma Berzerk album "Welcome To Earth"...that you could literraly compare them night and day. This is a sunny, radio pop, emo-eske, sell out record that is more likely to capture fans of Britney Spears than appeal to fans of industrial music. Don't bother with this album.

Many artists claim to have been inspired by a variety of musical styles, yet their actual music seems to come in one genre and in one speed. Not Buck 65 (a.k.a. Rich Terfry). The Nova Scotia native has spent almost 20 years listening and to and playing music, influenced by everyone from Johnny Cash to Kiss. It shows--all coming together in his infectious musical style. Secret House Against The World can almost be split down the middle into two different categories: half of this disc is full-on, dark, twangy country (the first track, "Rough House Blues," could easily be mistaken for a '70s Cash number). The other style on his CD--exemplified by "Kennedy Killed The Hat" and "Devil's Eyes"--is an electro-pop/hip-hop fusion, with an almost Beck-meets-Frank-Zappa feel. In both styles, the lyrics shine through with cutting cleverness. "The Floor" is Buck 65 at his most candid, evoking Leonard Cohen-esque vocals as he takes on the subject of physical abuse, the somber tune lushly enhanced by everything from banjo to violin to DJ scratches. Since Buck 65's fans include members of Radiohead and Sloan, he seems to be well on his way up the ladder to success. Hype aside, Secret House Against the World is a wonderful, eccentric collection of frenzied beats and twisted country tunes that's likely to stay in your player for quite some time. --Denise Sheppard

3 out of 5 stars Just a first impression.......2006-12-19

I will preface this by saying I have soaked up as much Buck65 as I could find in perhaps the last 3 years. Going so far as to get the likes of DJ Signify and pick up Josh Martinez.

I have never found the Buck65 cd that didn't immediately affirm my belief that he has more creative equity than almost every other artist and he throws out great narratives on geat songs... he's Bukowski, Cash and an old fisherman roled into one.

This cd however didn't imake the normal impression on me and I am frankly a bit disappointed. I have listened to it but once and it might be wiser to listen to it a few times as it might grow on me. But if it needs to grow on me it isn't the standard Buck65 fare as far as i am concerned.

As of Dec 29th the cd has grown on me and though I prefer other of Buck65's cds I like it more than I did at first considerably. be well

5 out of 5 stars Some artists truly leave their mark whether noticed or un-noticed.......2006-07-25

Secret House against the World is my first forray into Buck 65, and I have to say that this is one of the most intriguing and artistic albums I have ever heard. And the fact that it is coming from an emcee makes it even more amazing. The musicianship on this album isn't that particularly complex, and it doesn't have to be, its stunningly simplistic and beautiful. Obviously a throw back to the artists influences, I believe this is Buck's chance to show the world that he is not just a "rapper", but rather an artists in general. His creative force is supreme on this album and I would highly recommend this to everyone. There is a huge country influence on this album, more of the classic country(think highwaymen), and creates a sort of melencholy sound which is beautiful. Of course there are hip hop influences such as turntables and tight beats and the occasional flow, and folk influences and indie rock. Buck also displays his Canadian heritage through the French language, and being a Canadian myself, I really feel this. A must own in my books, but one that may fall on deaf ears, especially those who only have tastes for mainstream and pop hip hop and pop rap.

5 out of 5 stars Amazing.......2006-07-22

This is an amazing cd. There is a great variety of songs on this particular album of his. i particularly like Devil's Eyes, Devil's Eyes (Piano Version), The Suffering Machine, Kennedy Killed the Hat, Rough House Blues, and Blood of a Young Wolf. There are songs in french as well as english, which I think proves that he is proud to be a Canadian. The lyrics are very well though-out and some, if you listen hard enough, could actually give you some good advice. If you like this cd, you'll probably like Talkin' Honkey Blues as well.

5 out of 5 stars A Tsunami Of Music.......2006-06-12

I was recommended Buck 65 by a friend who literally told me nothing about the band, other than that I was bound to like it. I wasn't even given an album title to pursue. So, on a whim, I picked up Secret House Against the World.

It is a rare and wonderful pleasure to approach something new with absolutely no expectations and be rewarded in abundance. I experienced that kind of thrill when I first discovered The Shins (living in Seoul, South Korea and being separated from all forms of English TV means that I miss all the press coverage of the latest and greatest bands), Alabama 3, and even, back in the day, Beck.

Buck 65 is certainly a musical maverick. He doesn't sit still, and much like the weather in Missouri, if you hear something you don't like, just give it a minute. Heavy on the craft, and light on the crap, this music pounds away at the edges of convention and leaves them crumbling and ragged.

It is a daunting task to try to describe this music, and I no longer wonder why my friend left me with just a name and no explanation. I could try to compare this album to a hasty conglomeration of others (and, honestly, I kinda did two paragraphs ago), but that's doing Buck 65 a disservice.

Let's put it this way: Buck 65's lyrics are potent and tightly woven. They are, in every sense of the word, poetry, and of a high caliber. Some might argue that the words tend to plod, given the repetitive rhyming schemes and their gravelly and sometimes uninflected delivery, and that's fair enough, but I still think, in spite of that, the language soars, and it is buffeted up by music that is unique in almost every way.

Unique is a hard thing to be, and not just because it takes skill, but also because a lot of people don't necessarily care for it. I can see how someone might hate this album. It is chewy and frenetic (Kennedy Killed the Hat). It is fathoms deep and sparkling with black lights (The Floor and The Suffering Machine). It is its own kind of creature, a chimera of country, hip-hop, synth pop, with a dash of funk and flophouse rock.

If off-beat, new, intriguing, honest, and smart music is in any way your thing, then you should check this album out. And, if it's still possible after reading this review, try to approach the music without expectations.

Because the expectations you don't have will be blown away.

5 out of 5 stars A classic........2006-01-12

Buck 65 pretty much puts his heart out on this album, making it a classic. Every track is incredibly original. This is what Lucy Ford was for Atmosphere. Or what Healthy Distrust was for Sage. I would highly sugest buying this album. You will probably like it a lot. I can see myself in a week knowing all the lyrics to this album.

4 out of 5 stars MUSCLE METAL IS BACK!!.......2007-01-04

I have been a Thor fan on and off since first purchasing "Unchained" on vinyl way back in 1983 (CD release please!?!). There have been many great songs here and there since, but I would have to say this is the first time since "Only the Strong" that I think the whole CD is truly great. You have to truly appreciate Thor's style and history to fully appreciate a CD like this, but even newcomers to his style should find plenty to enjoy (if you like the classic metal/rock sound). It contains many styles of rock/hard rock/metal, showing talent with a feast of musical delight from the past 30 years all on one great CD. This is a truly smoking CD, and ranks up there with "Only the Strong" (my all-time fave), and one of his heaviest to date, the new 2006 release "Devastation of Musculation."

2 out of 5 stars Sounds great after a 12 pack.......2006-01-29

3 out of 5 stars Thor - 'Thor Against The World' (Smog Veil) 3 1/2 stars.......2006-01-08

After hearing several other patrons not ONLY slamming this CD,but Thor as an artist altogether,I was amazed at JUST how decent this latest release by the Norse god-like impersonator turned out to be.Good heavy metal to be had here.Looks to be Thor's tenth effort(including compilations)in 35 years.Had no idea he's been around that long.Maybe nothing original, but I thought 'Thor Against...' carried it's own weight fairly well.Tracks I have actually found myself playing repeatedly were the title opener "Thor Against The World",the uptempo "Creature Feature","Glimmer","Hard To Cry"(good harmonica playing),their love song(sort to speak),the beautifully played "Turn To Blue" and "The Coming Of Thor".I'll probably keep this CD in my current rotation stack for awhile.Line-up:Thor-vocals,Frank Meyer-guitar&keyboards,Bruce Duff-bass,Vince Meghrouni-sax&harmonica and Chris Markwoo-drums.Just might appeal to fans of Twisted Sister,Raven,Manowar,Quiet Riot, early Van Halen and possibly Judas Priest.Worth checking out for yourself.

5 out of 5 stars New THOR CD is awesome..........2005-09-24

Like most great performers, THOR returns with a new CD that sounds contemporary while not losing any of the flavor of what made him great in the first place over 25 years ago... with production help by Los Angeles rock personalities Frank Meyer and Bruce Duff, the songs on this CD rock harder than the top ten "punk" acts of today while also showing a tender side of the Rock Warrior... the best tracks like "Thor Against the World", "Megaton Man" and "Glimmer" carry the THOR trademark of keeping it catchy and uncomplicated... if you are a fan from the 80's you will continue to worship, if you are uninitiated, but a fan of hard driving, booty shaking HARD ROCK then you will pledge your allegiance to THOR...

4 out of 5 stars Raise Your Hammer For The Mighty Thor.......2005-08-15

The first time I ever saw Thor had to be on the U68 "Power Hour" some 20 years ago. This was a New York City UHF channel show that featured Heavy Metal videos for an hour a couple of times a week. It was also considered the poor man's MTV as at the time cable television and MTV were not as commonplace. Despite this title there was still a certain amount of appeal to it because on a regular basis you could count on seeing videos from Stryper, Dio, Yngwie Malmsteen and of course The Mighty Thor. This was long before MTV would ever feature any of these performers and sadder still some never made the transition to the network. So most of us were left to absorb the Metal by turning the dial on the television and aiming those rabbit ears just right to get the best reception. Memories, we all have them, but I digress.

Jon Mikl Thor has released his new CD on Smog Veil Records and it is exactly what you expect someone with 20 plus years in the business to deliver. His usual brand of heroism and bravery placed to Metal music. Thor sings about topics like good versus evil and the power of believing in oneself to achieve victory. Image wise there are a lot of similarities to him and Manowar. Each of them is a true defender of Metal and Hard Rock. With this new release Thor has actually given us a couple of solid Rock tunes and I found a large number of them very interesting. While there is no "Knock Them Down" or "Anger" on the record we do have the "Coming Of Thor" and "Megaton Man". These tracks are among my favorites on the piece and are pretty good rockers. "Thor Against The World" opens the release and has a catchy chorus as well. For those that enjoy ballads there is a good one on the record as well, "Turn To Blue" is really is such a heartfelt piece and it has been stuck in my mind since I first heard it.

The CD is worth checking out if you like Rock and Roll and also wish to support someone who's dedication to his music along with his strength has never faltered. Raise your hammers high for the Mighty Thor!!!!!

      Album Description

The CD is an amazing blend of Vic Flick's score (yes, guitarist of "The James Bond Theme"!!) with the hottest SPY-FI, MOD, and ORGAN bands around to today. An international affair including The Link Quartet (Italy), The Special Agents (England), The Men From S.P.E.C.T.R.E. (Switzerland), The Yards (USA) and Mike Painter & The Family Shakers (Italy). Also included, as a bonus is the never-before-released Wilson Chance title song "Take A Chance", breathtakingly sung by Linda Jackson and performed by Vic Flick and Les Hurdle.
