Zoovenir: Only for the hardcore fan...but he'll like it.......1999-03-19

I bought Zoovenir mostly because it seemed like a nice finishing touch for my collection. It's better than a lot of U2 singles, but it doesn't even come close to any of the albums. You wouldn't want to consider Zoovenir unless you really love U2. Not to say that it's bad, but you wouldn't really like it unless you love these 12 songs. I mean, nobody does U2 better than U2, so don't expect anything on Zoovenir to knock your socks off. Some of the tracks are really fun. "Fun" is a good word to describe Zoovenir because you've heard these songs before, now you're just hearing a differentÐand interestingÐversion. I'll go in the order of the CD. Streets is probably the best on the CD. It sounds remarkably like the original, but it's acoustic. Good opening, and the singer, Tom Nordahl, has a good voice. Almost a country twang, but that's probably the result of his Swedish accent. (The CD is made in Sweden; most of the bands are Swedish and some are British) Sharp Kiddie does a really original Even Better Than The Real Thing. It has a strong techno influence, but they throw in a harmonica too. Yes, it sounds good. The CD opens well with these tracks. Mysterious Ways...it's alright, it's alright, alright....although the chorus does sound good. However, this track ain't too great. With Or Without You by Apocolypse Cow is strong. It sounds very familiar to the original, but a little heavier. The electric guitar is prevalent throughout, which sounds nice, although the vocalist can't touch Sir Bono. One by Straitjackets has got to the funniest on the CD. Basically, Straitjackets sound like some kind of Punk band, and the singer sounds exactly like Gavin Friday of Bush. I never thought that One could become a hardcore track, but they're done it here. Very high energy. Sunday Bloody Sunday by Liar is very mediocre. It sounds a lot like the original. But obviously, it's not the original, therefore it's not so great. Bullet The Blue Sky on Zoovenir sounds less like the original than any other cover on the disc. Exit puts an original touch on it, with lots of distorted guitar. Interesting. The Fly by Blake Carringtons is AOK. The tempo has speeded up, and the guitar in the start sounds good (although it's not like the very unique "Fly" sound) Not so bad. Not so good. Inbetweendays sounds awful. Their cover of Pride does no justice to the song. They sound like they belong nowhere but the Expresso Bar. So soft you can barely hear it. I bet MLK Jr. would cry if he heard this. Worst on the album. Groove Tunnel, despite their great name, turns in basically a carbon copy of Hold Me Thrill Me...Okay, I suppose. The Chosen have done some cool stuff with I Still Haven't Found What I'm Looking For. A trumpet works its way in, and the pace of the lyrics is original. Good, but too bad that it's less than three minutes long Party Girl. It's a tough song to like. Automobile makes it even tougher.

(The CD is 48:26 in length) Basically, Zoovenir is nothing special. It's fun, some of the stuff is original, and of course the songs are great. It definitely loses strength as it progresses. If you don't own the albums from which these songs are covered, get those before you get Zoovenir! Get the Best Of before you get Zoovenir. But if you're a big U2 fan, and there are lots of us out there, Zoovenir is well worth the 18 dollars. My rating of 3 stars is conservative. Obviously, I would give any U2 five stars...but compared to other U2, this is only a 3. (Reference: Joshua Tree and Achtung would be 5s, some of the bad singles would be 1s)
