Album Description

Asia, featuring members of Yes, ELP and King Crimson, was the first "supergroup" of the eighties. Their eponymous debut album, released in 1982, was a huge success racking up global sales in excess of 15 million copies. In 2006 the original four members reunited for the first time in over 20 years for a series of concerts in the US and the UK. The success of this tour led to a full-blown world tour running throughout 2007 in celebration of their 25th anniversary. This CD was recorded in Tokyo in March 2007 on the Japanese leg of the tour. The companion DVD will be released in Fall 2007 on Eaglevision.

5 out of 5 stars ASIA's Live Show Now on CD.......2007-07-17

WOW! If you remeber the early 80's power prog and pop hit makers you'll love this collection. All the Wetton era hits summed up on two CD's. One of the things that caught my ear when I saw ASIA live and on this cd was Carl Palmer's fantastic playing. As a matter of fact the whole band is spot on. If we can only get them to do a DRAMA era yes song.

5 out of 5 stars Outstanding!.......2007-07-15

I was a bit more than pleasantly surprised upon my first listen of this fantastic album. Meticulous in every respect, you'd be hard pressed to find four musicians that top these gentlemen. I love their rendition of "video killed the radio star". And truly the finest rendition of "the smile has left your eyes" they've done to date. I too consider John Wetton one of the finest vocalists on earth. And Steve Howe's guitar and mandolin playing never sounded better.

The press and public did them "dirty" a few decades ago, but Asia has staying power and excellent material to see them through. I'm ecstatic that they're back again. I met John Wetton in May 1996. You won't find a finer gent anywhere. And his guitar and bass playing coupled with Downes and Palmer move like a well-oiled music machine. Great album (er`oops CD). Buy it and ride easy.

5 out of 5 stars Worth the wait!.......2007-07-14

How many times I've kicked myself since 1982 for not seeing Asia in concert when I had the chance! How joyful I am today, a quarter century later, that I've seen them at last -- not once, but twice in less than a year!

"Fantasia" is nearly as good as being there. Music quality on live albums is either good or bad, never in between. Fortunately, this one delivers. The talents of Geoff Downes, Steve Howe, Carl Palmer and (my favorite) John Wetton are clearly evident, both individually and collectively. When you consider how long they've been at this business, well before Asia was formed, it's mighty impressive how they continue to bring considerable skill and enthusiasm to the stage.

It's also great to see them dig out examples of their individual earlier work, something they were pressured to shun in the '80s. Asia isn't ELP, Yes or King Crimson, but there's a legacy in those bands that resonates in Asia's music, so those songs certainly weren't out of place.

In short, this is well worth buying, listening to and celebrating four very talented musicians and their considerable contributions to rock music.

5 out of 5 stars Captures their Great Sound.......2007-07-03

I saw the reunited Asia last year in Boston and this disc captures the great show that I saw.
They sounded great in Beantown and they sound just as great in Tokyo.
All the hits are here plus songs from each of their respected bands they played in before Asia.
It's a great live disc.
Check it out!

5 out of 5 stars ASIA IS BACK-WELL WORTH THE MONEY.......2007-07-02

ASIA IS BACK!! The Original Members of Asia show after 25 years since release of the 1st CD and this CD shows they have not lost a thing.Wish they had recorded in different country as they would have had a much more enthusiastic audience.

5 out of 5 stars Smooth Jazz CD.......2007-06-27

This CD is a smooth soothing jazz style.
A very relaxing blend of music.
Similar sytle to earlier works such as Turning Point, and I Do Remember.
Must have for any Hiroshima fan.

4 out of 5 stars A most enjoyable and passionate journey........2007-06-05

Hiroshima are not so much a band but an institution nowadays in the USA, they symbolise the classic maxim, 'East Meets West' whereby the music of Asia is fused with the music of North America and Europe but also the fusing of cultures both old and new.
On this new release , the Japanese Americans Dan and June Kuramoto, which form the basis of Hiroshima, continue with their tried and trusted formula of fusing the music of their present and past.
"Little Tokyo", which is named for a well known Asian neighborhood in Southern California, combines Asian, Latin American, African American and more influences into their compositions.
There is an exotic dimension to this CD collection the defies definition. That it is one of Hiroshima's most creative releases to date is definite.
Every performance shines with individuality, whether in solo or in group expression.Guest keyboardist and labelmate James K. Lloyd of Pieces of a Dream joins in on the catchy tune titled "Lanai".
The album offers a cocktail of young and old, east and west, funky tunes and contemporary jazz grooves with a dash of lyricism and the result encapsulates the dedication and reverance of some of today's finest exponents of Japanese and American idioms.
If you haven't heard any of Hiroshima's music yet, this is a good starting point and you will soon be looking for those back catalogue albums to learn more about their unusal musical adventure.
This is most enjoyable album of diversity,it is like a journey, not a destination for a band who have enjoyed more than 30 years of success playing music in a style and mode which is consistent with today's evolving cross cultural themes.

It's nigh on impossible to review a young, indie rock band anymore without referencing their predecessors, their colleagues who have created the anxiety of influence. Here, David Monks' voice, combined with Joshua Hook's compressed-spray on guitar, certainly conjure early Strokes, but then comparisons just fall short. Tokyo Police Club's command of multiple tempos and rhythmic palettes sets up spacey atmospheres to tumble through, with a hefty blast at their beck and call. There's a languid undertow here, Monks pulling you in with a slow, warm-water voice only to let his pals bludgeon you with just-so rhythms that, even in flight, last a sharp, fast two minutes on average. --Andrew Bartlett

3 out of 5 stars CD COLLECTORS ARE BEING INSULTED ALREADY.......2007-07-17

Let me reiterate that 16 minutes is not an LP. I fully beleive in making a shorter album by removing all filler, but come on...this is not a full length album by any stretch of the esoteric imagination. I understand why spazzcore punk bands like Some Girls, The Locust, & XBXRX release 20 minute albums (because more would be clearly too much), but in this case it's not enough to do anything more than load my IPod with, and in which case why did I buy the actual CD? The robot pictures are cool and everything, but if this was a dollar a song, then that means most people are paying three dollars or more for the cover art. I have the strong suspicion that this will be repackaged later with more songs to try and get more of my money, when the band gets done being dragged around the world on a short leash by their management. All I'm saying is that I bought this used and I still wish I had bought the last Strokes or Interpol album instead. That having been said, this is an album of seven potential singles, which you should buy on iTunes. I would give it five stars for good music, but 16 minutes in this genre is false advertising. If this was five dollars and printed on small vinyl like an EP then we could talk, but at this price it's a full length record with one side blank.

5 out of 5 stars Love every minute of it :).......2007-07-09

Although extremely short (16 minutes and 19 seconds), "A Lesson in Crime" is good from start to finish. Since there are only seven songs, there isn't room for any filler. Very fast-paced, fun and catchy...buy it!

4 out of 5 stars Fantastic.......2007-05-15

I bought this EP knowing nothing about the band and without having read any reviews. It turned out to be a wise impulse buy. I love this CD. Lots of energy, quirkiness, catchiness, and no fluff. As for those who complain about the brevity of this release and the price: [1] it's an EP, not a full length CD [2] great music is priceless.

5 out of 5 stars Fantastic - but not an album!.......2007-02-08

This is a really fantastic EP. But it's an EP! The other reviewers don't seem to be familiar with the concept of the EP. It's not a full length album! The album's out sometime 2007.

4 out of 5 stars Cheer it on.......2006-12-23

I was skeptical about this band at first after hearing different kinds of hype from different kinds of people.
But I must say that I'm very impressed with this band.
Their music is innovative and interesting.
It's music that I can continuously go back to.

I'd really rate it at 4.5 out of 5 stars.

Also check out their Tour EP with acoustic versions of a few of these songs.

This soundtrack serves up a collision of musical styles, as if the coolest radio stations of Tokyo and New York had suddenly melded into a giant hybrid. The Teriyaki Boyz' opening title track is typical: brilliant production by the Neptunes, East-meets-West mood, more hipness than you can shake a stick at. The Japanese hip-hop group's other offering here, "Cho Large," isn't quite as good but fortunately it's the rare lame-ish track on a CD that overall keeps things on overdrive. Highlights include DJ Shadow's collaboration with Mos Def, "Six Days (Remix)"; Japanese girl surf experts 5.6.7.8's (already familiar to Kill Bill fans) and their uproarious "The Barracuda"; Evil Nine's "Restless," which has the kind of monstrous bass line the Chemical Brothers would kill for; and Atari Teenage Riot's awesome display of digital-hardcore aggro, "Speed" (have these guys ever been used in Dance Dance Revolution?). Even a reggaeton track like Don Omar's "Conteo" somehow fits in this universe, fueled as much by gasoline as by testosterone. --Elisabeth Vincentelli

Customer Reviews:

3 out of 5 stars *** if you've seen the movie, but some songs missing.......2007-06-18

I wouldn't have bought this without having had the sentimental attachment that goes with associating the songs with scenes from the movie [which isn't exactly Gone With The Wind, but the acting is great (albeit hokey at times); the action non-stop, the stunts amazing and the big "message" (aside from achieving it via mass casualties) is good.].
Unfortunately, like the other reviewers, I'm bummed that some of my favorite songs weren't included in the soundtrack. Which brings me to the real reason for posting here: Does anyone know the name of the song that is playing when Shawn arrives in Tokyo?

4 out of 5 stars If you liked the movie..........2007-06-10

...you'll definitely like the soundtrack. A few songs that were in the movie got left out as you can tell by previous reviews which is why it gets a 4.

What is the name of the song that is playing when the credits start to roll? It's a techno song and the lyrics I can hear are, "I rock, irock, irock, iroll..iroll..iroll, i rock i roll

3 out of 5 stars Decent..........2007-05-08

This soundtrack is pretty good except for one flaw that many other soundtracks tend to have, as well. They put tracks on the CD that you really don't hear too much in the movie, and the cool songs that you like and hear in the movie aren't on the soundtrack. Like what was the deal with the Spanish songs? The movie takes place in TOKYO! That's Japan for anybody who is geographically challenged. Why is Spanish music in an American/Japanese soundtrack? I would much rather have replaced those songs by Kid Rock or the Whisper Song that you hear in the movie, but they just so happened to leave them out.

4 out of 5 stars whats that song?.......2007-05-03

What is the song at the very end at the start of the credits right before "conteo" by don omar starts. It only plays for like 5-10 seconds, then it cuts off and don omar butts in, but the song is much longer. It goes something like, I rock (echo), I roll (echo). It is a techno song.

5 out of 5 stars Great Movie, Cool Tracks!.......2007-04-10

I'm not under 13, but the movie was tight and action packed. The sound track from the movie was great as well. One song most of you might not know about, was when Shawn and Han was riding together on the highway was called Mamacita by the one and only Skateboard P known as Pharrell. Its not on the soundtrack which sucks. But still a great soundtrack to buy.

5 out of 5 stars Very Relaxing.......2007-04-03

I love this CD! I listen to it every time my world feels like it's about to spin out of control because I have too much to do and not enough time to do it. Very calming and serene. My 12 year old daughter now knows who Mozart is and can recognize his music on the radio!

5 out of 5 stars This is so beautiful.......2006-02-07

I've been a massage therapist for seven years, and I have lots and lots of relaxation music. I have owned this c.d. three different times because I have listened to it to the point of wearing it out several times over. It is so beautiful and rich in perfection, and if your smart its really easy to time your massage to. If your not an M.T. just get it to have in your collection when you'd like to relax, you won't be sorry.

5 out of 5 stars A Musical Tranquilizer.......2000-07-22

This is a terrific collection of many of Mozart's best known and most beloved pieces. You will probably recognize many of the melodies - and with this CD, of course, you'll learn their names. This CD is really aptly named - it is a very 'relaxing' collection of beautiful music. One reviewer said that its great for the car - but also after that long, grinding day at work - you know, the kind of day where you feel especially eaten-up. You just want to go home and sit in your favorite chair and put on some music... It is also an excellent album to get the kids started on lovely classical music. Highly recommended!

5 out of 5 stars guaranteed to relax you whether at home or in the car.......1999-04-23

this assortment of melodies is the perfect gift for the new mother, the new baby, or anyone else who wants to be stimulated by the classical sounds and soothed by the melodies. a definite must for the car - where much stress occurs in traffic jams.

5 out of 5 stars FAR Better Than World Wide Live.......2007-07-13

While I'm not the biggest Scorps fan, I really like this a lot. You can hear that the band is having a blast. The sound is very good and balanced, and the performance is intense. Sad for me to say that I never checked out their early (pre-Mattias Jabs)material--and it's my loss--when it was first released. Now that I have, I can honestly say I like the early stuff better. This one's hard to get tired of and is becoming one of my favorite live albums. Get it, at least, to hear Uli Jon Roth tear it up.

5 out of 5 stars Excellent live performance........2007-06-04

This is the perfect example of the level of live performances that the Scorpions have. Always very appealing to the ears. Klaus Meine's voice is so full of strenght and class. We'll Burn the Sky is a Master Piece.

5 out of 5 stars Scorpions Rock!!.......2007-02-21

I love this album, but I must say that I do not like one thing about the CD release: It does not contain "POLAR NIGHTS", a song with Uli Jon Roth on vocals! I had (and still have) the original double album and POLAR NIGHTS is on the album, but not the CD. WHAT HAPPENED TO IT? IS IT AVAILABLE FOR DOWNLOAD SOMEWHERE?

This album captures the Scorpions before they hit big in the States, although San Antonio, Texas rock station KISS (RIP, Joe Anthony)was playing Scorpions music for quite some time. I was 13 or 14 when I first heard of the Scorpions and this was the first stuff I ever heard from them and I was BLOWN AWAY! Almost 30 years later, this stuff STILL blows me away!

Uli Jon Roth has obvious Hendrix influences, as evidenced in his playing, but is no copycat. He holds his own quite well and is a genuine pleasure to listen to! Klaus used to scream back then and sounded awesome and, in my humble opinion, never quite sounded that good again (after the Lovedrive album), with the "Lovedrive" album having that same type of scream from his vocals. The rest of the band sounds very good and I am finally happy to have added this to my CD collection, but the only thing that could beat it would be a DVD video of this performance or anything else from that era, if it exists.

However, one of the most interesting things about the album is the cover, specifically, the guitar player's feet (can't really tell who it is, maybe Rudolph Schenker?)! I showed it to my 12 year old daughter and she said "COOL!"

What more can I say? If you don't have it, then get it!

5 out of 5 stars crazy cool german rock, don't be afraid........2007-01-17

Do youself a favor and get into some 70's era Scorpions. It's heavy, it's spacey, it's groovy, it's German, and it's obscure as hell. Really cool stuff. The guitar playing is absolutely mindblowing.

4 out of 5 stars Fantastic Musicianship, Not Bad Live Sound.......2006-12-23

I walked into Mother's Records in Winnipeg in late 1978 ready to buy Kiss Alive II, but hesitated when I heard a new, different live album playing through the store speakers. This was the first time I had ever heard of Scorpions, let alone their music, and I was quickly absorbed by the album. Suffice to say I left the store with `Tokyo Tapes' rather than the album I had come to purchase.

Scorpions had yet to reach star status internationally, but in Japan, the second largest musical market in the world, the band were already legitimate superstars. Following the release of `Taken By Force', it was only natural that Scorpions would tour Japan. The response of the fans, plus the sheer energy coming off the stage, prompted the group to record two sessions at Budokhan (only days after Cheap Trick's recordings), and those recordings became `Tokyo Tapes'.

If you don't have any early Scorpions, this could serve as a worthy introduction. They hit all the high points of their first four albums (excluding `Lonesome Crow'), as well as throwing in a few covers (unneccesary, in my opinion), and winning the crowd even more with their rendition of the Japanese folk song, "Kojo No Tsuki". Even though the sound quality is at times muddled, what shines through is the musicianship. Klaus Meine is on his game, the rythym section thunders, Rudolf Schenker shows adept ability, but it's Uli Jon Roth's virtuoso, and at times otherworldly playing that is the highlight here. His performance alone is worth the price of the album - check out the playing on "Robot Man" and "We'll Burn The Sky" and you'll see what I mean. This is the last Scorpions album of any sort that Roth plays on, and his departure and subsequent addition of Mattias Jabs clearly defines the "old" Scorpions sound and "new", cleaner Scorpions sound.

5 out of 5 stars I love it!.......2007-01-21

I've had this CD for about 6 years now and it never gets old. As the title suggests, it's great for relaxing with a good book and a glass of wine. I find myself reaching for this CD whenever I get a migraine. I had always heard that the complexities of Beethoven's music could ease a migraine, or I suppose any headache. I've never been able to find any substantiated proof of this but from my experience the music eases my headaches. Whether it's psychological is still a mystery to me. Fact is, I love this CD and it's never far from me.

4 out of 5 stars Famous Beethoven slow movements.......2006-01-15

The real Beethoven would probably be irritated with compilation CD's like this that "cherry picks" a variety of slow movements from various works he composed. But, the average listener today will see it as a great way to get to know his music and enjoy an hour of more serene music - less Beethoven's more intense movements. The variery here is broad: solo piano, violin + piano, string quartet and full orchestra symphonies and concertos. The dreamy solo-piano pieces are some of Beethoven's most beloved and alluring slow movements that vaulted him to fame. While these and the chamber music tend to be more "relaxing," the latter orchestral pieces especially contain shifts in tempo, dynamic range and emotion that some might not find so relaxing. After all, this is Beethoven with a full orchestra and not Bach or the Baroque.

But, all is not lost if you are looking for a collection of serene, lyrical music composed by the great Beethoven. There actually is a CD that features some of Beethoven's most endearing and melodic adagios and largos: "Beethoven for Book Lovers" (Philips label). This CD is mostly comprised of the nicest slow movements from Beethoven's ten violin sonatas (violin + piano) played by the legendary David Oistrakh - a violinist with one of the most gentle and beautiful tone ever recorded. Fortunately for those wanting uninterupted peacefulness, there are only a couple of those typical "Beethoven outbursts" in this CD (very brief though). But, overall, the flow and tone of the entire CD is truly relaxing, enchanting and not distracting. All of these works reveal the gentle side of Beethoven and his surprizing ability (for such a fiery composer) to write music of such poinant and tenderhearted emotional appeal. Also, the "Chopin for Relaxation" is one of the better ones in this series and features some of Chopin's slower, more serene solo-piano music and the ever-so lovely middle movements from his two legendary piano concertos.

5 out of 5 stars Number of discs.......2005-03-16

3 out of 5 stars I Know Music, and This is Not the Best (by Beethoven Lover).......2005-02-21

Ok, I'll admit, this is a pretty good album, but it lacks the feeling of Beethoven. Its songs don't sound like Beethoven is playing, and its not too relaxing. It deserves three stars because of this lack of the great Beethoven himself. Sure, the songs are pretty, but I'd buy a different album if I was you.

3 out of 5 stars Not the Best By beethoven Lover.......2005-02-20

not completely a delight...shows little Beethoven in it all, deserves only about two or three stars.

5 out of 5 stars Anita O'Day a Jazz Icon.......2007-05-14

I first heard Miss Anita O'Day in 1956 at a friends house and have never ceased listning. she was a natural jazz voice and her interpretations of the lyrics swung every time.whether in front of some of biggest bands or small groups. this album is a glowing example and I do not why it so long to be released.

5 out of 5 stars Anita O'Day at her very best in Tokyo.......2007-04-11

Anyone wishing to understand the fully greatness of that most swinging and original of jazz singers need look no further than this sizzling release. Never before on CD, this is an unedited, live concert featuring O'Day fronting a top-notch Japanese band playing her famous arrangements. It's all here: her sensual sound, her hip, flip attitude, her incomparable use of musical time, her unparalleled improvisational gifts, an entire arsenal of talents focused on the task at hand. If you already know and love O'Day, grab this one with confidence. If not, what a voyage of discovery this disc will provide. Freeman Gunter

5 out of 5 stars Anita at her best surfaces after 44 years in the vault.......2007-04-07

Kayo Stereophonic has has a real knock out with this sound track of a TV concert songstress Anita O'Day performed in Tokyo 44 years ago during the acme of her jazz singing career. With a minimum of comments and a maximum of music, the late legend offers 15 of her best-known tunes from her years with Verve and her own Emily label. Kayo has issued or reissued other O'Day CDs in recent years, and this is the best of the bunch. Anita plus fine tunes, sound quality and musicianship from two Japanese groups add up to a real bargain. Agent Robbie Cavolina and producer Takao Ishizuka have outdone themselves in adding this to the Kayo inventory.

Samuel Barber's Adagio for Strings is a powerful piece, packed with emotional intensity yet also extraordinarily listenable--and popular. Here, Barber's short masterwork of simplicity and resonance gets eight treatments, from those he approved of (Charles Munch and the strings of the Boston Symphony; the Tokyo String Quartet; organist David Pizarro; and the Smithsonian Chamber Players) to new interpretations that don't quite match with the older renditions.

James Galway's new flute-and-synthesizer reading is a bit anemic, though thankfully not showy, and the Canadian Brass's arrangement is likewise tempered and calm, even if not very close to having significant bite. Richard Stoltzman and the Kalman Clarinet Choir probably do the best job of taking Barber to new places; the woody tones mesh almost polyphonically. Also included is the Choir of Trinity College's reading of Agnus Dei, Barber's choral setting of the Adagio, a distillation that might well be the high point of the CD. For the most stunning rendition of the Adagio, however, listeners should really hear the Thomas Schippers version. --Andrew Bartlett

5 out of 5 stars Familiarity Breeding Contentment.......2007-04-16

If there is a single composition by which American composer Samuel Barber (1910 - 1981) is universally known, it is the Adagio for Strings, arranged, at Toscanini's request, in 1938, two years after it was originally written as the slow movement of Barber's only String Quartet Op. 11. Here are no less than five "authorized" versions by Barber himself -- the original, for Quartet; the Adagio, for String Orchestra; the version for Organ; the version for Chamber Orchestra; and Agnus Dei, a 1967 setting of the last part of the Latin Mass for a cappella choir to the music of the Adagio -- as well as three other arrangements, for Clarinet choir, for Brass choir and for Flute and Synthesizer. Eminently satisfying and one only wishes there were notes to explain which version (aside from the Quartet movment, 1936; the Adagio, 1938; and the Agnus Dei, 1967) came just when. Charles Munch and the Strings of the Boston Symphony Orchestra give a classic performance of the Adagio in its most familiar form while the Tokyo String Quartet unveils the seldom-heard original version that was responsible for all the rest.

In a little under three years' time (March 9, 2010) we will be celebrating the centennial of Barber's birth and, since March 1999, Naxos has been recording the music of this pre-eminent American composer. So far, all the orchestral works (including works for soloist and orchestra, works orchestrated from another medium, Knoxville: Summer of 1915 and the chamber opera A Hand of Bridge), the published works for piano, choral works, and the opera Vanessa have been committed to disc. Chamber works, songs, works for band, other keyboard works etc. are hopefully soon to follow. Although this disc, featuring the Adagio in its varied forms, is not part of this collection, hopefully hearing it will encourage those unfamiliar with Barber to explore more of his music.

5 out of 5 stars An American Icon of Classical Music.......2006-10-10

If you only listen to one classical song in your life hark Adagio for Strings.

5 out of 5 stars I'll have a number 4 when you bury me, please!.......2006-04-08

LOVE this music. It moves me. Plucks strings I did not know ran through my soul. Makes me feel the sadness of loss but keeps alive the hope of new doors to be opened, more life to experience.
We buried my Uncle, a fine kind-hearted man this Wednesday, they played the ubitquitous "Amazing Grace" when had they asked me, I would have had them hear this and pull them from the path they know so well. Open their eyes and spirit. Feel all the emotions of that day. Buy this for the quiet time when you need to think not what to do, but who you are and whence come.

5 out of 5 stars The BEST.......2005-09-07

This is the very same "song" done about ten diffent ways, and every one of them is fantastic. If you like ANYTHING about classical music, you should buy this CD.

5 out of 5 stars Inspiring.......2005-05-10

How beautiful this is! I recently purchased this item, and how PLEASED I am with it! The Boston Symphony Orchestra's version is truly inspiring and so utterly well-done! The flute and synthetzer (oh rats how DO you spell that?) is wonderful! So original. I am very, very pleased. If you love Samuel Barber's adagio for strings, you have to own this CD.
