This quartet of corn-fed rubes, who collectively dress like young LBJ, hail from Los Angeles. Fortunately, they bail enough hay to keep the purists from upsetting the cracker barrel. The Dave & Deke Combo (named after singer/guitarist Dave Stuckey and guitarist/crooner Deke Dickerson) motor down the lonesome road pickin' and grinnin' like a bunch of squares who equally adore Elvis, Bob Wills & The Texas Playboys, and Hank Williams. In between plugs of chaw and bites of Moon Pie, the boys sing about everything from male pattern baldness ("Chrome Dome"), to Deke's attempt to get into heaven by playing the guitar like Les Paul ("Deke's Hot Guitar"). Mostly, it's righteous slap and twang that's irresistably danceable. As Deke says, "If they're gonna hang me / I guess I better swing!" --John Chandler
