Different, but still good.......2007-02-11
This album is different than rEVOLVEr, but you can really see the inspiration from it. Normally, I'd listen to mostly heavier music, but I can not dismiss this as a great record!
A Matter of Taste.......2007-01-26
This album works for me, I really dig the direction The Haunted went on this record, however by looking at the reviews below it is clear that not everyone feels the same way I do. Reading some of the negative reviews made me ask a question "Are these the same people who gushed over rEVOLVEr?" because if they are I don't really see where the complaints are coming from. If you liked rEVOLVEr, than I don't see any reason why you wouldn't like this record considering the seeds were planted for further experimentation with their sound on songs like Abysmal and Burnt to a Shell. If your vision of what The Haunted should sound like is One Kill Wonder (my personal favorite, different review) than I truly can see the validity in your complaints, as this is quite the departure from the violent madness showcased on that CD. Let's just say I agree with the assesment "if you didn't like rEVOLVEr, than forget this one".
I for one liked the last album but didn't love it so I really am having a hard time explaining why I am digging this CD so much. I guess I didn't have high expectations (if any at all) of this CD, and hearing the more rock oriented pieces worked in with the brutal thrash attack just caught me off guard and like I said earlier, it just works for me. I don't think Peter Dolving is a great vocalist but his clean and screamed vocals fit the mold and mood of the music here perfectly. I am also convinced that the guitarists for this band who basically created the melo-thrash riff are probably getting tired of rehashing the same old same old each time out, so I respect them having the gonads to experiment and throw us some curveballs on this one. Fresh ideas are never a bad thing.
I struggle with the notion that you need to listen with an open mind to enjoy The Dead Eye, just don't go into it expecting another One Kill Wonder, or Made Me Do It. Try listening to The Flood, The Crowning, or The Medusa first, if you like these tracks you will dig the whole album. Yes, they have changed their style, yes, this album has it's flaws, but it is still The Haunted and I think if you give it a chance you can get into it as well, it is definately one of my faves from 2006. If not, well, I guess it's a matter of taste........the beauty of opinion.

I blame their parents.......2006-12-20
I can't claim to be a hardcore metal fan, but The Haunted has always been one of my concessions to the genera simply for the sheer speed and brutality of their songs.
That's just the problem. Neither of these things describes The Dead Eye. This album sounds like dozens of other watered down radio-metal bands that I can hear at any given moment in my car.
There's not a single "Bury Your Dead" or even a "Sweet Relief" present on this disc. Every song is slow and trudging. The vocals are almost all sung, which isn't bad in and of itself, however the singing sounds like an imitation of Days of the New or some other second-rate grunge band.
This isn't about keeping an open mind or allowing a band to progress (though, in this case, they've certainly regressed.) It's about the severe disappointment of expecting one thing that has been great in the past and getting just the opposite.
This may as well be a different band.
WOW!.......2006-11-19
This album is the first I've picked up from "The Haunted," and I'm eager to get all the rest of them now. There is alot of balance to this cd, there's screaming, singing, some great deathy riffs, this is some of the most inspired metal to come from Sweden in awhile. My favorite band for many years has been Misery Loves Co. and this cd manages to fill that void with a speedier edge. "The Fallout" is one of the standout tracks, and "The Medication" has a really catchy chorus riff. There's alot of groove riffs in here too... and many of the songs have quiet interludes that add so much depth. It's like a classical music movement, a song is supposed to go loud, quiet, a mix, all in all this is a great collection of metal songs!
From some of the other reviews I see alot of the same moaning that I see every time any metal band changes something from their previous records. (In Flames comes to mind.) Give it up guys. Different is good. I have yet to trace it back, but I doubt any earlier recording will top this one, but like In Flames, I bet I'll find a level of great consistency in songwriting/production that goes all the way back to inception.

One of the GREASTEST bands ever!!!!!!!!.......2006-07-02
If you don't like this band then go slap yourself. All the members of this band are great. Alot of bands that people now listen to sound all the same, this is one of the bands that sticks out. People go out and buy all of Nevermore's cds.
Brilliant Music in a Dead World.......2006-04-23
When I was first getting into metal, this was one of my first 'real metal' CDs I ever bought (i.e. not poppy nu-metal like Korn, Skinlab and ilk.) As such, my review might be a bit biased in favor of Nevermore, but nonetheless, this album rules. I'd argue that either this (or maybe Dreaming Neon Black) is Nevermore's musical apex thus far. And since Nevermore is one of my favorite bands, that this is one of the best metal CDs ever made. And it is with good reason that I say this.
With so many bands vying for attention, there's a lot of unoriginality in music. It's rare for bands to draw from so many influences that their music defies logical classification. Yet Nevermore does just that (Iced Earth is also one of the few to do so.) They brilliantly combine the best of progressive metal, power metal, traditional metal, gothic metal as well as other subgenres. Dead Heart in a Dead World (a.k.a. DHDW) is not only the result of Nevermore 's unique style, but their varied songs as well.
This is the best feature of DHDW. Each song has its own combination of levity, seriousness, darkness, mellowness, heaviness, etc. For instance, the songs 'Evolution 169,' 'Inside Four Walls,' and 'Sound of Silence' all have some degree of levity in their lyrics (if only because one has lyrics from a Simon and Garfunkle song), yet 'Inside Four Walls' also has a degree of political seriousness about it that neither of the other two has.
Likewise, 'Dead Heart in a Dead World,' 'The Heart Collector,' and 'Believe in Nothing' all have a degree of darkness in them, yet 'Dead Heart in a Dead World' has a musical heaviness in it that neither of the other two (which are more ballad-esque) have.
It is hard to overstate the uniqueness of each song. Some songs will make you smile, some will make you think, and others will make you despair. And there is never any point where one has to skip tracks because every song is excellent. All of this while Nevermore performs interestingly original music that, while not always the most technical in metal, is so beautiful that it doesn't even matter.
Unfortunately, Nevermore's followup albums aren't as good because they lack the emotional variance that DHDW has. They are increasingly misanthropic, and while there are traces of that on this album, it is not overdone as it is on the followups. That's not to say they are bad because they're still very good, but it lacks the depth that DHDW and Dreaming Neon Black have.
If you have any appreciation of metal music, you will buy this CD. Then you'll buy Dreaming Neon Black.

alright.I was expecting a little bit better, i guess i am gonna stop buying CD's and start buying just songs:)
The genesis of a metal band.......2006-02-24
This is Nevermore's turn towards concept albums...they established themselves with the first two albums and worked out the small issues that all bands start with and it comes together in this, the beginning of their signature sound. The whole album has a strong push from start to finish. I personally find their album Dreaming Neon Black to be their best to date, lyrically, musically and general feel. They flex some lyrical muscle and show off with the musical pyrotechnics in this album though. I believe in liking a band through and through, and no collection would be complete with only a few of their albums. Seeing them live at Gigantour was also a real treat. They are ever the critics of their own music which means they care about what they put out. The sound tech was pretty bad until someone kicked him halfway through the set...and they admitted it. Few bands will do that, admit that something went wrong. But they pushed through and kicked some serious ass. All in all, get anything with their name on it. The lyrics are deep, the sound is unique (especially for something coming from Seattle) and they seem to be a humble group of musicians.
Friggin amazing.......2005-11-16
God I love Nevermore. They are one of the best bands that formed in the 90's. After having plenty of strong material under its belt before, Nevermore enter the new millennium with their best album yet. Here, you've got soaring vocals from Warrel Dane, great bass from Jim Sheppard, and awesome drumming from Van Williams. Towering over everything, however, is the guitar work of the one and only Jeff Loomis. How good is this album? Read on for the tracks.
1. Narcosynthesis - Very good song. I love the opening riff. "How did it come to this? Narcosynthesis!" 5/5
2. We Disintegrate 5/5
3. Inside Four Walls - The lyrics on this song are exellent. Warrel shows how great his lyrics are. "Inside four walls/Inside four walls my friend/They took away your freedom/and the pigs still preach their lies!"
4. Evolution 169 5/5
5. The River Dragon Has Come - THE bets song on the album! Don't let the clean intro fool you, this is possibly the heaviest song on the album, featuring an amazing 7-string riff. 6/5
6. The Heart Collector 5/5
7. Engines Of Hate - One of the heaviets songs on the album. 5/5
8. The Sound Of Silence - The S&G cover. Better than the original! 6/5
9. Insignificant - The better of the two ballads! 5/5
10. Believe In Nothing - Possibly Nevermore's most well-known song. 5/5
11. Dead Heart In A Dead World - Great closer to this album. 5/5
So, if you're a metalhead, you'll love this.

A Dead Poem.......2004-12-26
Rotting Christ are known more for the controversy of their name rather than their music. Which is too bad considering how good their music actually is. Early albums from Doom bands such as Sentenced and Amorphis mixed with a bit of Death Metal is the best way I can think of to describe it. Vocals are done in the sort-of-but-not-quite Death Metal style reminiscent of early Paradise Lost and early Anathema only a bit more gutteral. the riffs switch from Doom to other styles seemlessly which results in a brutal, almost straight-forward metal sound with an underlying current of majesty and atmosphere. The drums and bass are get the job done but aren't anything spectacular. Overall this is one of those albums just about anyone can enjoy. I can't really compare to the rest of their catalog because this is my first Rotting Christ album but I've heard from people that other releases are quite different. Don't let the name fool into thinking this is just another lame gore and guts Satan band.
this is.......2004-11-06
when rotting christ beggined to decay, anyone who liked their previous works know that, they became "fancy" and "nice", betrayers of the underground. I respect their way of doing thins, anyone has a different mind. But this is not a black metal release, it cannot be called that.
Possessing Everything That Is Beautiful.......2004-09-10
This album is a collection of beautiful songs. Rotting Christ are a very unique band. Their rhythm is slower than most bands in this genre, and they mix it with melodies and harmonies that speak directly to your soul. Since the beginning they have worked on this sound and they have come to master it with three albums: "Triarchy of the Lost Lovers", this album "A Dead Poem" and "Sleep Of Angels". These three albums a metal fan has to get.
A Dead Poem starts of with the song "A Sorrowfull Farewell" which might be one of the more energetic songs here. However the melodic guitar riffs are present from the start. One cannot help but feel sorrow when listening to this work. The second song "Among Two Storms" might have the catchiest riffs in this album followed by a mighty chorus. Beautiful. The next song, is called like the album "A Dead Poem". It possese everything that an immortal song has to have. It is one of my favourite song here. Starts soft and builds into a massive riffs that can easely hit you so hard as to cry. By now you must already be hooked to this amazing work of art. These first three songs already make this album an epic. But wait... there is so much more.
The rest of the album follows in the same steps. My favourite songs are the title track, "A Dead Poem", "Semigod" and "As If By Magic". Amazing tunes. Any of those tracks will get you hooked to this band. Other songs which are above average are "Out of Spirits" and the instrumental called "Ten Miles High". However unlike other bands in the melodic death metal style this instrumental song does not have crazy guitar work. It is basically a song without singing. Very beautiful though.
If you love Melodic Death Metal actually if you love any metal do yourself a favour, don't look at their name (as it those not repressent this band well) and get this album, not only will you not regret it but you will be glad. You will then be forced by you unconscious self to get your hands on their other two amazing albums, "Triarchy of the Lost Lovers" and "Sleep of Angels".
"And it's the grief that accompanies you".......2004-05-11
4.5 stars. This is easily the most immediately accessible of all the albums in the Rotting Christ catalog. While a continuance, more or less, from their previous effort "Triarchy of the Lost Lovers," here the sinister Greeks add a glorious mixture of Gothic keyboards and marching rhythms with the occasional guitar lick lashing out like a forked tongue adding a melodic undertone. Overall, this CD is marvellous! The drumming is interesting, the songwriting always feels like it has some place to go, and the eerie backdrop of Gothic keyboards leaves a moody impression. I actually prefer their heavier albums such as "Thy Mighty Contract" and "Khronos 666," but "A Dead Poem" feels, at times, almost ready for mainstream radio. Take that as a compliment or not, I still prefer their darker, Black Metal beginnings. However, this is still a very good album I know I will return to in the near future. This is probably the best first purchase the beginning fan can make because the songs here make an immediate impression. Later on, the more intricate sections make this album a real value. Take it easy.
Gothic Doom.......2004-01-18
With a name like "Rotting Christ" you are certain to have many fans.....and many enemies. But when I listen to there music I am almost hypnotized and put under a spell. There music can be so relaxing and then sometimes you feel like getting up and moving around.
The vocalist is not that talented. He sounds like a broken record but is able to pull it off to were it doesn't get on your nerves.
"Dead Poem" is there second best next to "Sleep of the Angels" which was there best work and nothing has touched it since. "Dead Poem" came with a extra (free) CD inside and it had almost twenty free songs. Hey that was really cool!
If you like dark gothic doom metal then this is for you, but if you hate music that is dark and gloomy go listen to something else.

Imagination Overdose!!!.......2006-02-04
INTO ETERNITY - Dead or Dreaming
-
Canada's Into Eternity is by far one of the most creative metal bands around... Not just in this Country, but in the metal world as a whole. Their styles and influences are greatly varied... it is seldom that a band is able incorporate so many different styles into their music. In addition to their top notch Musicianship, they also use a multi-vocalist assault. (An actual singer /screamer, plus the guitars and bass players lend their voices as back ups.) Which only further adds to their unique Metal Approach. Though I heard this album after their Masterpiece "Buried in Oblivion"... "Dead or Dreaming" still sounds incredible. Granted the production is a bit more `raw' but the song writing is just as good. And even though they've clearly grown as musicians their performance on this CD is still note worth... These guys have a fantastic Rhythm section, Drums are incredible and the Bass is audible and sounds great... And then of course there is the Guitar playing... lots of great licks and tons of classic and some not so classic solos. Easily some of the finest young talent around in todays Metal world.
Favorite Songs: Absolution of the Soul, Distant Pale Future, Selling God, and Cyber Messiah.

very good metal.......2005-02-05
I relly like this album because it's sooooo well done i just dont know what to say about it . Just keep up the awesome work Into Eternity you guys defenitly ROCK :-)
A great find..........2004-07-01
The last reviewer said these guys are better than Opeth...well I would not go that far (not even close to that far), but they are VERY good. Definitly one of my top 10 bands. I bought this CD though, because of a few reviewers who mentioned that if you liked Opeth you would like these guys. On first listen, I thought, "Ummm...what were they thinking?" After a few more listens I changed my tune. They sound much different than Opeth, yet have many common attributes which is what I think attracts lovers of Opeth...the changes from ultra-heavy to mellow and melodic, the use of solid clean vocals and nice, heavy growling, and the excellent song writing. The music is certainly not as awe-inspiring as Opeth, but in this world where 5 star worthy music is hard to come by, Into Eternity is a joyous discovery.
AMAZING!.......2004-02-17
this is one of the best style blending groups ever in history of metal. i like it even better than dream theater and opeth. these guys have riveting melodies and ripping vocals that just annihalate you with the diversity of their music.
Into Eternity.......2003-12-23
Into Eternity mixes a few kinds of metal with heavy and power metal which is good songs like "Absolution Of The Soul", "Selling God", "Distant Pale Future" and "Unholy" are the most tops ones is really a great cd you listen to it and start head banging is really good!

Take Note of the Last Track.......2006-02-26
This album is okay in the genre of new metal but then the last track hits you. The last track is from the same roots as 70's Miles, especially Bitches Brew and the live Black Beauty (see my review for that). If you are approaching this from a metal fan viewpoint, then you will not appreciate the last track even though when I play this album I find myself skipping to it. Just as Spring Heeled Jack vastly widened their sound by adding fusion elements starting with Amassed and onward, the Yakuza have jumped genres and created a cd that although not as original as say the Mars Volta, creates a new experience for the listener with an open mind.
Midwest Viewpoint.......2005-04-10
One of my favorite music sites gave this CD a top rating, and their description of it was mouth-watering, so I picked it up a good month after it came out.
My first listen left me very disappointed. The only tracks I liked were Chicago Typewriter and Miami Device, and the last track irritated me, as I had expected metal, not jazz.
Alas, the years roll on, and I aged a little. Now, this CD is my pride and joy. Tears roll down my face every time I hear the spastic blasts of frantic saxaphone wailing in Vergasso, and the groove-laden thrash of TMS is cathartic. 0100011110011 has become my meditation hymn, and has inspired many a brilliant piece of writing, with its infinite depth and droning darkness. Yakuza has crafted a recording that is not only incredibly unique and head-bangingly satisfying, but a true piece of intellectual stimulation.
wow.......2005-02-09
I'll have to agree with former reviewers who said it isn't avantgarde and/or "all that"--I reaalllly wanted to be inpressed b/c I know the work of some of these guys, but it failed to "wow" me inspite of that. It tries hard, but doesn't seem to come from an authentic place enough to call it avantgarde. Technically, of course it's real good, but the big picture doesn't feed the listener anything but droning, rumblings and rarely blossoms into anything magnificent or fleshed out. I wish it would've made me care, I was so tempted to give it 4 stars just because I know the quality of talent...Maybe next time...
experimental but uncompelling.......2004-04-23
I would call this an EP rather than a full-length album. They have about 27 minutes of real music, followed by this endless droning jazz piece that's about 40 minutes too long. I like jazz and I'm all for experimentation, but I have no use for self-indulgence of this sort. I think I'd like it a lot better if the drums at least varied one iota over the course the thing. Overall, I agree wholeheartedly with the other reviewer who said this wasn't all it's cracked up to be. It's experimental and technical (although there's nothing too impressive), with some interesting moments, but there's nothing here that I find all that compelling. I admit that personal taste is playing a role in my judgement-- I don't like their emo or alternative rock influences very much, and I've never thought horns worked all that well in heavy music (even in Candiria, one of my favorite bands). There's something a little obvious about their experimentation, too; for some strange reason I don't find anything they do all that unexpected. Great experimental bands like Candiria and the Dillinger Escape Plan pull things out nowhere and catch you by surprise. I never got that feeling listening to this. It tries hard, and for that reason I'll give it 3 stars, but I won't be listening to this much.
NIce, but not all its cracked up to be.......2003-11-04
Okay, let me start by telling you that I DO like this band, but I was very dis-guided by the reviews that I recieved. I was to believe that it was avant garde metal. Just because it has a damn saxaphone on some of the songs doesnt mean its avant garde. My favorite track is the last 40 min song that explores the colors of jazz. I heard they are jazz/metal, hardcore/emo/mathmatical chemists? But in my listening experience they are not that eclectic and experimental as some might say, they are GOOD, but if you want some good prog metal you need to listen to OPETH or my new favorite, EPHEL DUATH "Mountain Shadow" They are everything people rave about Yakuza but (im sorry) 10 times better an a amazing band. I wanted to write this review because i'm always looking for that "perfect band" and for your dark side this is the "perfect band" Jazz/metal/prog/avant garde...I can't believe the things they can do. so if you do like Yakuza, but are kinda disapointed about the reviews of some uneducated listeners on this page listen to EPHEL DUATH and enjoy the yakuza in a different way! I love you!!!! So dont hate me punk!

You have to have this CD!!!!!!!!!!!!!.......2007-02-07
Simply put, this is the best CD I have heard since "Reign in Blood" or "Slaughter of the Soul," and it gets better with every listen. I can't take it out of my CD player. It's absolutely unbelievable. A true work of old-skool-metal art. This makes all Nu-Metal bands sound like Britany Spears (although, that's what they sound like anyway). True Metal LIVES in this CD. Buy it now!!!!!
Is this The Haunted?.......2007-01-14
A definate change from the traditional Haunted sound. It's not nesisarily a bad change, but a change nontheless. Those looking for that Haunted sound won't find it on every track, but it's still there.
The Dead Eye: A balance of thrash and aesthetics........2007-01-04
First of all, you have to take your listening with an open mind. This varies a bit from former albums by The Haunted. For experimenting in slower, melodic, aesthetic music, they do it well. The songs are not as intricately written, but the performance as a whole is their best to date. The recording sound is both the best of any of their albums, and the fullest and warmest sound to come from producer Tue Madsen. Although the album has more clean vocals than in the past, Peter Dolving sounds more confident than before, and his melodies actually fit the music (unlike on Revolver). The addition of experimentation slows the overall tempo of the album. For being slower songs, they are really well executed. And none of their past albums have had 100% blazing fury from start to finish. The change-up accents a nice variance of mood. My favorite tracks are The Medication, The Prosecution, The Shifter, and The Stain. Moderate tempo songs, such as The Failure, and The Drowning are also pretty awesome in contrast. The only songs I didn't care for at all were The Fallout (due to use of synthetic drums), and the vocal melodies on The Medusa. This album could have potentially been their best if the ratio of thrash hymns outweighed the new style, but unfortunately only 4 tracks are overtly driving (leaving a rather uneven balance). But overall, this is still a great album and one of the best releases of 2006. All I could ask for is a more balanced thrash ratio on a future album.
Not your ordinary thrash metal album, but The Haunted aren't your ordinary thrash metal band either.......2006-11-14
After all of the reports from the band, and all the reports from fans who had heard it due to the leak, I knew that this album was gonna be different than their past releases. It's not too far from sounding like rEVOLVEr, so it might help if you're a fan of that album, or if you're pretty open-minded like me, you might enjoy this and the other albums. As the collector's edition goes, I only recommend getting it if you're a big fan. The best parts of the bonus dvd are the "making of" footage and the live performances. The only reason why I bought it over the regular edition was because this was on sale at a local record store.
Is it a contender for "album of the year?" Likely. Is it some of the best music The Haunted has ever put out? Definitely.

Dead to the World, it appears so..........2006-06-17
WHAT HAPPENED TO THIS BAND?!? I've heard rumor they split up, but if you go to the website listed underneath here, it's not the bands website anymore. Whoa, very heavy sounding CD, similar to what Korn perform, but this CD is full of catchy riffs (as well as heavy Korn-type sounds and interesting subject material). They even do a cover of a Prince song (Darling Nikki). I totally recommend that if you see the CD to pick it up, you won't be wasting your money.
Chum has REUNITED!!!!!.......2004-08-06

Incredible.......2004-04-29
My old band covered "Angels in the Snow". If I had my way we`d have covered the entire album. Its a goddamn shame they arent together and arent a band more people know of. Of all the horrible people who make "music" and get paid for it very well it really is a shame Chum didnt get the respect they deserve like the artists who get respect they dont deserve. limp bizkit makes millions playing old songs they didnt write. Chum writes an albums worth of incredible and origional songs and does a fantastic, dark cover of a Prince classic and gets nothing. Buy this cd while you still can.
If I had 3 wishes I would use 3 to get Chum back together........2003-02-20
I don't like them being broke up. This album is a masterpiece. If you like any type of metal from pop-punk to death metal then you will like this album. Light singing with heavy riffs. There are so many great changes in all of the songs. You can't really compare this to any other band, they have a totally different sound. ...
dont be stupid..... buy one.......2002-03-29
i have to say that this is one of my alltime favorite albums. i listen to it almost daily. these guys deserve more than anyone will ever know. a must for any metal music fan.

Dead Media is Hefner's fifth album in four years. They have slowed down and have become a little less awkward and angry since their abrasive embryonic stages as South England's answer to Pavement on 1998's Breaking God's Heart. The hooks and smart words are still in much evidence, though, on such songs as the snappy, analogue synthesizer-led "When the Angels Play Their Drum Machines" and their melancholy tribute to the fourth astronaut to walk on the moon, "Alan Bean." The quartet may be prolific, but there's certainly no diluting the quality. Darren Hayman still has a way of singing so plaintively as to break your heart, and the music is now a gentle hybrid of Joe Meek, early electronic pop pioneers, Daniel Miller's Silicon Teens, someone all alt-dot-country and soulful (Giant Sand, say), and something else altogether. This is an understated gem. --Everett True

"Letýs hope that they donýt stay like this.".......2002-04-10
Following their singles collection We Love the City, Hefner have struck back with their fifth album in four years in Dead Media, which hears them slow down the hard indie-rock that dominated the fantastic Fidelity Wars, sounding more like Belle & Sebastian than the Gomez-esque music they normally aim for - which, as a matter of fact, is an interesting change. Filling their latest studio recording with keyboards, synthesizers and turntables, the album has taken a turn for the better, harkening back to their debut days in Breaking God's Heart, with the experimental sounds playing in a fast-slow order of tracks. The album opens with the titular "Dead Media", a sublimely brief tune that mixes electronica with traditional 90's Brit-pop. "Trouble Kid" follows, a track that answers the question of what would happen if a DJ remixed a song by the 70's punk band The Stooges. With Velvet Underground inspirations on songs like "Junk", "China Crisis" and the whimsical "The Nights Are Long", the band seems to have tried their hand at homage's of groups that have influenced them, with many of the other tunes resonating the riffs of R.E.M., Elvis and The Dandy Warhols. But the whole album isn't filled with such remarkable reverence - the one-minute long "Union Chapel Day" plays out like it was taken straight from the `80s, while the same-length "Treacle" aims for a DJ-esque tune but fails miserably, ending with a terrible five-second radio scratching. While die-hard fans will no doubt either ignore or despise this recording, casual listeners will surely benefit from Hefner's change - but let's hope that they don't stay like this.
An underrated record........2002-02-02
Hefner's "Dead Media" is the kind of record that the masses loathe. Biting lyrics, synthesizers, and interesting melodies are enough to fully ... a TRL-devotee off. But "Dead Media" is an underrated gem (the British press has consistently slammed it) and is even better than "We Love the City."
Gone is the sarcasm that characterized "The Day That Thatcher Dies," and other previous songs, and "Dead Media" showcases a newfound earnestness. "Half A Life" is an unabashed love song, while "Alan Bean" is a straightfaced tribute to the fourth man who walked the moon. The title track is quietly heartbreaking, as is the masterpiece "China Crisis."
Hefner are not afraid to have fun either. "Trouble Kid" is a Brit-pop tune that sounds ridiculous on paper, but is surprisingly contagious on record. "The Mangle" is a short mass of synths. And "Home" is an interesting tune that could have been recorded in the 1940s.
Overall, "Dead Media" is an excellent effort and is sure to be one of the quieter gems of the year.

Album Description
David Thomas and the two pale boys generate strange and beautiful new shapes, rolling stories, and sonic panoramas out of spontaneous deconstructions created with brass, guitar and electronics. The simple seesawing of a melodeon gives way to cascading electronica and expressionistic soundscapes-- sometimes pulsating and abrasive, sometimes mysterious and exploratory. Through it all is woven the mordant wit of one of the most distinctive and charismatic singers in modern music, Pere Ubu founder David Thomas, the trademark soundscaping of electronic trumpeter Andy Diagram and guitar/synthesist Keith Moliné, and injects it with a furious rock urgency.
Customer Reviews:
Looking to go pale........2005-07-06
David Thomas' creative brainchild borders on the very strange; looping drum lines and beats over his disconnected and demonic vocals. Thomas sends effects swirling around the room, not sparing any vibrato, and makes eloquent use of the effects on Melodeon and Musette. Keith Moline's guitar lines are wonderfully interconnected with the cacophony, giving the listener an ominous feeling of impending doom. Not forgetting the horn player, Andy Diagram's trumpets provide an ambient tone reminding one of "Bitches Brew" by Miles Davis. "New Orleans Fuzz" follows a 12-bar with loops, and even captures a bit of the Cajun city's Creole rhythms on record. "Nebraska Alcohol Abuse" leaves no questions in the listeners mind, but the absence of a band throughout the record intrigues as to what the Two Pale Boys would be like live. [...]
Well.....it's David Thomas, what more can I say?.......2005-01-17
Let's face it: It is rather silly to review a David Thomas & TPB CD because the faithful--myself included--like him and everyone else is going to hear it as a ridiculous excuse for music, led by a singer who has been sucking too much helium between takes. So here's the deal: If you like Pere Ubu, or just fancy yourself to have an open mind to music that is "outside the box", give this a listen; if not, then buy another Dave Matthews Band album and have fun humming along. To the fans, know that this CD doesn't break any new ground for this band. It is what we have come to expect and love and I for one will get hours of listening enjoyment from it.
