Editorial Reviews
Guild Of Ages is a melodic hard rock band from Denver, Colorado that incorporates strong guitars, large vocal harmonies and keyboards to their unique sound. Under their previous name of Caught In The Act (CITA), Guild Of Ages quickly earned a reputation as one of the hardest-working bands in the US, averaging close to 300 dates a year. After garnering some regional recognition, the band was brought to the attention of Bobby Barth (AXE, BLACKFOOT, ANGRY ANDERSON) who produced their first record, "Relapse Of Reason" which was released in Europe on MTM Music, in the United States on NEH Records and in Japan on Zero Corp. The release of Relapse Of Reason contributed to a resurgence of melodic rock and roll across Japan and Europe, and created a large fan base throughout the world. Relapse Of Reason was voted one of 1994's best albums by critics and fans alike in magazine polls throughout Japan. CITA was voted Best New Band by those same polls. Strong interest in the band led to the release of CITA's second album, Heat of Emotion in Europe on MTM Music and in Japan on Zero Corp. "Heat of Emotion" debuted on Burrn! Magazine's Burrnin' Albums chart at number 35. The album quickly proved to exceed the high expectations of fans and critics throughout the world. The ever growing fan base in Europe drew CITA to Germany where they played several tour dates during the summer of 1997 which were recorded live. These recordings were brought back to the US for mix and mastering at NEH Studios and ultimately resulted in a full CD of live songs titled "Live Over Germany". When the band returned from Europe they immediately began work on a new record. Their new studio album under the name Guild Of Ages, titled "One" was released in Japan on Zero Corp, in Europe on MTM Music and in the U.S. on NEH Records in February of 1998. The band returned to Europe in the summer of 1998 on double billing with Axe to play a series of sold out concerts in Germany, The Netherlands, and Belgium. Work began on their fourth studio album in early 1999. Released in Europe on MTM Music in June, 1999 "Vox Dominatas" quickly gained the same critical acclaim that their previous albums earned them. It was also released in Japan on Toshiba/EMI with re-released versions of their first three studio albums including bonus tracks on each from "Live Over Germany". The band spent much of 1999 and the early part of 2000 playing live dates and writing material for their next album. The German band Jaded Heart was recording their record "IV" in NEH Studios at the time and friendships between the two bands were forged. When Jaded Heart vocalist Michael Bormann visited the US again following the release of "IV" in Germany he co-wrote several songs with Guild Of Ages that would ultimately find their way onto the next GOA album, "Citadel".
Product Description
Another great Melodic Rock import brought to you by NEH Records. The recording for "Citadel" was completed in late 2000. It is released in Japan on Toshiba/EMI along with a "Best Of" compilation titled "Truth" and also in Europe on MTM Music.

PURE CHURCH.......2006-11-28
and 1/2 stars, Minister Hall is BACK!.......2006-08-19
This is a James Hall set through and through. It's more on the traditional side than past projects, but this is 95% of what you would expect. Melodies that stick with you and in your head for encouragement. Tight harmonies. The unique phrasing of the choral parts that so many others try to copy (the combo of the vibrato, alternating softness/loudness, and "forceful choppiness"). Choral direction beyond compare. And a band made up of many of the same musicians that have caused the other projects to shine so brightly. This is what we've been waiting for, folks.
The only reason that I deduct one half a star is because the soloists on this outing, while very good, are not quite up to the standard of the previous James Hall projects.
But that is the ONLY reason and it's a relatively small thing, in light of the quality of this set.
Of note: Minister James is one of the increasingly small number of artists who make simple, yet intelligent, gospel music. The music here is often repetitive but what they choose to repeat makes sense and is beneficial from a spiritual standpoint -- contrary to what you often hear on the radio.
Example: today, many other choirs repeat phrases like "can't fail," "no limit," and other half-phrases that make sense within context of the song, but out of context it doesn't make sense. Minister Hall's phrases that repeat are "The joy of the Lord, the joy of the Lord is my strength" and "Mercy endureth forever," just to name a couple. See the difference? Long after the song has stopped, that phrase can come back to mind, has meaning even outside of context, and can give inspiration.
When those phrases are backed by the gifts bestowed upon Minister Hall and the crew, you have a winning combination.
"Voices Of Citadel" belongs in any choral music collection as a prime and outstanding example of simple, yet intelligent and adventurous gospel music.

One of their best!.......2007-05-12
very bad timing.......2006-08-26
They were fine musicians, wrote decent songs and were a very capable live act. "Shine on Brightly" is a good, hippy, prog song. While they were good musicians, their songs did lack the drama of Yes, Genesis or Kansas. I actually enjoyed their "Reel to Real" album.
This is a quality album but it's really only for the devoted fan. If you remembered them from the 70's, was wondering if you can get Starcastle on cd, and are elated to hear this obscure music once again, then this is for you. Otherwise, no teenager will like this. I don't know if I like this b/c its truly good or it is just nostalgic for me.

Last of Their 3-Album Prog Career.......2005-11-09
Musically, Starcastle were virtually a clone band of Yes, even down to using the same make and model guitars, basses and keyboards, and I wouldn't be surprised if they used the same cymbals and mics too. They did add a certain amount of "American-ism" hailing as they did from the Midwest and having started out as a bar band. There were so very few decent American prog groups in that era that Starcastle at least earns the somewhat dubious honour of being one of my top 4 American prog bands along with Utopia, Kansas and Happy The Man.
Starcastle did have a knack for catchy, accessible melodies, and a terrific keyboardist in the way under-rated Herb Schildt. Schildt was so good, every prog fan should hear him at least once. The singer, however, had a pronounced lack of projection to his voice (maybe why he was kicked out of REO Speedwagon?), saved only by the remarkably solid harmony vocals that sounded like Yes after a solid month of listening to nothing but Crosby Stills & Nash.
Citadel found the band trying out some shorter numbers overall, and a few obvious ploys for pop radio airplay. This never seemed to work but all of these prog bands, presumably under pressure from their labels, were trying the pop thing out at the time. Citadel does have some very good prog rock tracks and fans of their earlier work will definitely enjoy this one, but be forewarned it's not in the league of the first two records.
Originally produced by Roy Thomas Baker of Queen fame, this re-issue is a CD-R replication, so be prepared for some less than professional artwork (just try reading those credits on the inside back cover!) The sound isn't bad at all though, and it's about the only form you can find this CD in anymore so there's not much choice. A good pickup for fans, and prog fiends who've never heard them might want to get this one after the first two. But the Starcastle experience ends here with Citadel and on a few rare odds-and-sods live albums. The last studio album, Reel to Real, is not prog and is not good.
Not like the debut, but ...... .......2005-07-21
Much ado, now and then.......2004-08-18
Yet even if the sound and graphics were superb, these CD-Rs should be considered as being of dubious quality. CD-Rs are inherently unstable and have a relatively short lifespan. I've had some go bad within a couple of years, for example. Anyone concerned about CD "rot" and other issues involving aluminum discs should do a double-take before pursuing these two Starcastle discs. Fans might choose to purchase them anyway, of course.
But I'm not really a fan. To me, the first three Starcastle albums ('Starcastle,' 'Fountains of Light,' 'Citadel') are interchangeable and equally problematic. Throw a castle in the air, where it falls you pretty much know where . . . but they don't. Gravity is not their forte.
While the musicians are very capable, especially the bassist and the main guitarist, the lead singer's voice is, in my opinion, perhaps the most annoying on record. Vapid, without edge, depth, or resonance, it represents the major flaw of the band. Unlike any Yes album, every Starcastle album commits the one unpardonable sin for a progressive rock band: no drama. Compared to Terry Luttrell, Jon Anderson sounds like Lemmy.
The music has lots of texture, but no weight. It is filigree that turns fuzzy on close inspection; light and shade without the sun and moon behind them.
Busy bees--where's the queen? Spiders spinning--where are the flies? There's no earth in the Starcastle cosmos.
Try to imagine, if you can, a fantasy novel without a romantic plot or a heroic quest. The Starcastle knights and whatnots are engaged in a fashion show:
"What ho, my young squire, your flashing splendour brings me to my diaphanous knees. Such chartreuse! Why, my periwinkle does but blime the air around its deciduous charm. I crave your sartorial charity."
Yes, ELP, Kansas, Genesis, King Crimson, Camel, Gentle Giant, UK, PFM, etc. wouldn't be caught dead playing this stuff.
But I do play Starcastle from time to time--because of its textures, its lack of drama. To me, Starcastle is the first New Age prog-rock band, and I wonder how many of the many bands currently on the runway (cf. Mostly Autumn, the Flower Kings) owe them a flounce or shoulderpad, or two.

Winner Best Film Score, Oxford Film Festival 1978, REISSUED.......1999-06-07
Directed by Peter Brook and Jean de Salzmann, the film follows the story-line of Gurdjieff's quasi-autobiographical book MEETINGS WITH REMARKABLE MEN. Composer, pianist and conductor Laurence Rosenthal, whose work includes musical scores for numerous films and major television productions, including THE MIRACLE WORKER, BECKETT and PETER THE GREAT, has drawn knowledgeaably on the original Gurdjieff / de Hartmann collaborations and sensitively alternated these with his own compositions and with authentic Middle Eastern folk performances. His soundtrack won the award for Best Film Score at the Oxford Film Festival when it was issued in 1978/1979.
