Essential for any Genesis fan .......2007-07-17
"Genesis 1976-1982" (6 CDs, 6 DVDs) is extraordinary on so many levels. I'm not going into a dissection of each of the 5 studio albums from that period, except to say that having now listened to "Duke" and "Abacab" from start to finish (and with the benefit of 25+ years hindsight), I can see what the band was trying to do. Each of the albums is now also onto 5.1 Surround Sound, and that sounds absolutely amazing, if you have the right audio set-up at home (which I happen to have). The 6th CD "Extra Tracks" (13 tracks, 59 min.) collects odds-and-ends from various EPs, B-sides and other miscellaneous "lost" songs from that period. The colletion sounds a bit disjointed because, well it IS disjointed, although I love "Inside and Out", with a furious Tony Banks solo towards the end, wow, and better yet is "It's Yourself", which really shoulda been included on the "Winds & Wuthering" album, just outstanding.
The real pay-off on this set are the various visuals added onto the DVDs. Let's start with the absolute best of the whole bunch: a 45 min. concert from 1976 (on the "Trick of the Tail" DVD), with (surpisingly) excellent audio and video and stunning tracks like "Fly on a Windshield", "Entangled" and "Los Endos" (I saw Genesis on their 1977 tour and this brings back many memories). Equally good is a 45 min. excerpt from a 1980 London show (on the "Duke" DVD) with killer performances like "In the Cage", "Dance on a Volcane" and again "Los Endos"). Also not to be missed is a 40 min. 1978 BBC documentary called "Three Dates with Genesis" (on the "And Then There Were Three" DVD), where the BBC reporter follows the band on 3 shows (Germany, Holland and then Knebworth). The real eye opener is of course to see a behind the scenes look at a big festival like Knebworth in 1978 (admission price: 5.50 British Pounds!), it's like watching a time capsule. Each of the 5 studio albums comes with a "2007 reissue interview", which lasts about 15-20 min. each and is quite interesting the first time around. This box-set also collects the many videos the band did, which are quite enjoyable (I remember seeing the "Robbery, Assault & Battery" video as a kid on Belgian TV in 1976; hadn't seen it since). Last but not least, the set contains a nice 48 page booklet with great liner notes.
I can't emphasize enough how estatic I am with this reissue. I already was tempted to buy this when Best Buy ran it with $30 off, but then when I saw that Amazon sells it at FIFTY PERCENT OFF, I immediately jumped on it and ordered it here. Best decision in a long time. This box set is absolutely essential for Genesis fans from the 1970s. As for Genesis fans from the latter era, give this a look and listen. Chances are you'll be stunned, in the best possible way.
Fully Utilized Re-mastering Techniques!.......2007-07-14
Indeed, this set documents their Beginning and Empirical stages with grandeur like only Hackett, Collins, Rutherford, and Banks could.
I quite liked seeing Steven Hackett in the first two "Review Documentaries" for the albums "A Trick of the Tail" and "Wind and Wuthering". These alone, are worth having the DVDs. All five Review Documentaries are fantastically insightful. With interviews with Hackett, Collins, Banks, and Rutherford; how could they not be?!
There are plenty of other extras on these DVDs, of course. All five DVDs contain photographs of the touring programs from the coinciding tour that took place with the given album. All contain at least 2 videos from that period. As you reach the Duke and ABACAB DVDs, you get actual music videos as we know them to be currently. Although, it must be noted that the "concert film" for A Trick of the Tail and the "three dates with Genesis" for Wind and Wuthering are the true gems out of all five DVDs. Even the interesting and often comical videos for the ABACAB period don't quite match up to these.
Then, there are the DTS 5.1/ Dolby Digital re-masterings that are found on the DVDs. Why American versions of the CDs do not contain the SACD, I've no idea. They are re-mastered in Dolby Stereo, however; giving the records a much more lush and coherent sound.
A special note to those who are playing the music videos on the DVDs : You must select the type of sound quality that your DVD player/ sound-system is capable of. If you do not have the ability to play DTS 5.1 audio but you select that audio, the sound will be absent from the music videos. There are two instances where you are given the chance to select the type of audio you want. If you fall victim to not having the capabilities of playing the DTS 5.1, do not freak out or think that the DVDs are damaged; simply select the Dolby Digital audio selection instead of the DTS. Other than that, you should be smooth sailing for weeks to come!
There really is no need to get into how first-class the records, themselves, are. If you're a fan of Genesis, you know that these are simply some of the most brilliantly written tunes of modern music. All five albums express emotions that inspire all who listen. The musicianship that is exposed by every song, by all four members of the band can't be compared with. This isn't even mentioning the voice of Phil Collins; a man with one of the most distinctive singing voices in music history. Not to mention that Banks and Rutherford occasionally offer their vocal talents on a few songs.
The last aspects worth significant mention are the "Extra Tracks" CD and DVD. This is the same format as the five conventional albums: the CD is re-mastered with Dolby Stereo (not SACD or DTS) and the DVD holds the DTS 5.1 and Dolby Digital Surround sound. As for the songs themselves, there could be an entirely new record based off the vitality of these songs. Many of these tracks were B-sides to ABACAB singles and Duke singles. Some of the others can be found on the 3X3 EP. The remaining can be found on their other EP from this time period.
Superior sound quality, distinguished song composition, admired presentation, and indisputable talent has always been the name of the game for Genesis. It's magnificent to see a band of artist who still maintains these traits after 40 years.
Nothing this ingenious could be rated anything less them 5 stars!
THIS is what you've been waiting for ... .......2007-07-12
I'm 45. I've been a Genesis fan since I was 15. I've been really frustrated by the 'lack of attention to detail' of the last group of Genesis so-called "Remasters" (the absolute WORST packaging, including incorrect liner notes, and really ugly boxes on the back of EVERY Jewel case with the track listing -- yeah, some art work -- AND the title track of "The Lamb Lies Down...." actually FADED in, like on all other CD versions of the song, including the Japanese mini-lp version... good grief, anyone who knows the friggin' song KNOWS this has a hard beginning on the piano.)
OK, I haven't really studied the liner notes yet, but I can absolutely say that the packaging is a whole lot better for the 5 albums in here -- complete art work faithful to the original LP releases, including complete lyrics ("abacab" included). Even the CD labels are faithful to the original releases (The US domestic releases have ATCO/ATLANTIC labels -- I would have preferred The Great Charisma Label actually, and suspect the UK/European discs were pressed with them instead). This package DOES contain a 6th disc, with 13 B-sides and EP tracks recorded between 1976 and 1981.
But The Thing is, of course, the music. So what about the music?
I want to say right away that I haven't heard every track in here yet. But of what I've heard, these recordings sound fantastic. Davis clearly went back TO THE MASTER TAPES this time, and these are not only remastered, but they are remixed. For example, so far, of ALL the tracks that fade out (for example, "Wot Gorilla", "A Trick Of The Tail", "Inside And Out") that I've heard, they are all slightly extended. And there are differences in the sounds at the end of these tunes (you don't hear that decending tone so prominently at the end of "Wot Gorilla" as on the original mix, and the fade is extended just so nicely -- and on "Trick Of The Tail", again, a nice extended fade, and you don't hear Collins "grunts" at the end as prominently).
Of course, as a previous review has stated, "Submarine" is the full-length B-side single version with the hard ending, and "It's Yourself" comes complete with an extra verse (sometimes heard on some really bad-sounding bootlegs). And at least they included "Me & Virgil" and "Match Of The Day" (omitted from the Archive 2 Box) -- which also, I might add, sound just great!
My ONLY complaint (so far) would be that for some reason, "It's Yourself" fades, like on the Archive 2 Box. I have the Italian single version; this song actually has a really sweet hard ending, and it doesn't make sense that someone would want to fade out the song when a perfect ending exists on the master tape. But that's what they did. Go figure. What I'd LIKE to have is that ending tacked onto this remastered version.
Given that one complaint, I gotta say they finally got it right with this release -- and I can't wait for them to put out The Gabriel Years -- if the master tapes have been properly stored, there's no telling how these will sound (HOPEfully, they'll fix it so "The Lamb..." starts like the LP does ... withOUT the crackle).
Gary
YES, I am over the age of 13 ... lol.
PS: The package reviewed is the US Rhino release, and the tracks listened to were from the CD's and not the DVD's.
Do you like Phil Collins?.......2007-06-27
I think Invisible Touch was the group's undisputed masterpiece. It's an epic meditation on intangibility. At the same time, it deepens and enriches the meaning of the preceding three albums. Just listen to the brilliant ensemble playing of Banks, Collins and Rutherford. You can practically hear every nuance of every instrument. In terms of lyrical craftsmanship, the sheer songwriting, this album hits a new peak of professionalism. Take the lyrics to Land of Confusion. In this song, Phil Collins addresses the problems of abusive political authority.
In Too Deep is the most moving pop song of the 1980s, about monogamy and commitment. The song is extremely uplifting. Their lyrics are as positive and affirmative as, uh, anything I've heard in rock.
Phil Collins' solo career seems to be more commercial and therefore more satisfying, in a narrower way. Especially songs like In the Air Tonight and, uh, Against All Odds. But I also think Phil Collins works best within the confines of the group, than as a solo artist, and I stress the word artist.
Sussudio, a great, great song, a personal favorite.
The DVD's are worth the price of admission.......2007-06-27

If you're a died-in-the-tie-dye fan, you've probably already heard a tape of this show and will be pleased to know that here it sounds amazing; the entire three hour performance is included, mixed and mastered off of original 16-track live master recordings. If you're not already a Deadhead, Live at the Cow Palace: New Years Eve 1976 is an excellent encapsulation of mid '70s Dead. Recorded in-between 1975's invigorating Blues for Allah and 1977's dreadfully myopic Terrapin Station, it's eminently preferable to the live album Steal Yr Face, and goes a long way towards showing that the critically-maligned Godchaux era had a lot going for it. A few of the songs lumber a bit, but there's a real funkiness and versatility to this segment of the band's career that they never really had at any other time. Several stages of the band's career converge, such that the elastically funky version of the late '70s Dead, the almost jazz-fusion Dead of the early '70s, and the soft cowboy folk sound of 1970 of are all here. It's lovely. --Mike McGonigalAlbum Description

Beautiful ending for 1976.......2007-05-29
As for the performance, The Dead were surely inspired that evening. Let's take a brief look at the contents of this 3-cd set.
The first set, as it has happened with The Dead before, proves to be the less interesting. It starts off with "Promised Land", which is nice but doesn't say much. "Bertha" is played more slowly than the classic "Skull and Roses" version. "Mama Tried", in contrast, is played in a more hurried pace than on the aforementioned record. Anyway, there are both nice to hear. "They Love Each Other" proves to be a real treat. It includes a very strong piano solo by Keith Godchaux, and the band sounds very tight. Unfortunately, the results are not the same with "Looks Like Rain", where the group make a couple of easily detectable mistakes, apart from sounding uncomfortable with the song. A nice "Deal" brings the things back together and set the mood for a magnificent "Playing In The Band" which includes, as you can imagine, an extended, pure-beauty jam where everybody flies freely.
1977 started in Winterland with "Sugar Magnolia", and the second CD kicks off. A faster-than-usual and splendid-as-always "Eyes of the World" continues and segues into one of the most wonderful "Wharf Rat" versions I ever heard (a song that is naturally beautiful made even more beautiful. Can you picture that?). After this sonic Eden, we are taken back to reality with some interesting yet more earthy "Good Lovin'" and "Samson and Delilah". "Scarlet Begonias" closes the second CD in its usual relaxed, lovely and cheerful manner.
The last CD takes off with "Around And Around", which usually sounds (to these ears) just plain fair. This version is not the case, embellished with a effective rhythm change in the middle and a fantastic segue into a outstanding "Help On The Way/Slipknot!". Jerry Garcia expands his talent all over, and the band enters into an ethereal landscape where he can speak freely with them in a classic telephatic-empathic-Grateful-Dead-type manner. All this beauty derives in a very short "Drums" and the time comes for a pleasant "Not Fade Away" to distract the listener's mind before a sublime and touching "Morning Dew". "One More Saturday Night" follows and the show finds its proper ending with "Uncle John's Band" (including some usual lyrics confusion) and a simply wonderful "We Bid You Goodnight".
Well, top-notch Dead, warts and all.
A great night of a tremendously talented ensemble.
Post scriptum:
I still can't find the reason for all that detraction against Donna Jean. Go on and loathe her while I enjoy her voice, I don't care.
Welcome new release from the Dead archive.......2007-05-20
"Live At the Cow Palace, New Year's Eve, 1976" (3CDs, 22 tracks, 191 min.) brings the 12/31/76 show in its entirety, and the band is generally in great doings. Contrary to many other Dead fans, I've always enjoyed the Godchaux era, and this is as good as any from that era. Set one is somewhat slow in building up, but I love the 20+ min. blowout of Playing In the Band. CD2 brings a great Sugar Magnolia>Eyes of the World>Wharf Rat>Good Loving, but the real jewel on this set is CD3, with a great Slipknot!>Drums>Not Fade Away. Uncle John's Band in the encore is the cherry on top of the cake. Just an great evening of great music all around.
I have usually been impressed with the job Rhino has done with reissued and back catalogue issues, and they don't disappointed me here. Excellent packaging, great liner notes, pictures, it's all here. Bottom line: is this an "essential" live recording in the Dead's output? Probably not, but it certainly is a most enjoyable and welcome addition to the live catalogue of the Dead.
Love it.......2007-05-19
We love it around here.I think its well worth the money spent.

Heaven knows, the Scotsman born Donovan Leitch was ripe for ridicule, even when he was hitting the charts with regularity. He was the ultimate flower child, and his airier pronouncements made cynics want to tighten up those love beads around his neck. Listening to Troubadour, however, it's striking how versatile, melodic, and agreeable most of his material sounds decades after "Mellow Yellow" has faded into a jaundiced yellow. Clearly under the sway of Bob Dylan early on in his career, Donovan nevertheless was capable of directing his reverence into something as enchanting as "Catch the Wind." Amping up as the '60s progressed, he assembled a series of psychedelic-pop classics, including "Season of the Witch," the "Hey Jude"-like sing-along "Atlantis," and the uncharacteristically driving "Hurdy Gurdy Man" (the latter features three-quarters of what was to become Led Zeppelin providing stellar support). This two-disc anthology may be more Donovan than some desire, but the booklet, seven previously unreleased tracks, and expansive perspective it provides makes it a more-than-worthy overview for those who take their paisley folk-rock with a beatific smile. --Steven StolderAlbum Description

A fine introduction to the work of Donovan.......2006-09-20
I first bought this set when it was released and there were few enough Donovan CDs to be had; Sony had only seen fit to put Sunshine Superman, Hurdy Gurdy Man, Barabajagal and Greatest Hits out, and sad to say, they are still woefully deficient in their reissue of his catalogue (although Troubadour forgave a multitude of sins, as the Try for the Sun box has also done). Troubadour gives you two wonderful Donovan demos, "London Town" (Don's take on Tim Hardin's "Green Rocky Road") and "Cod'ine" (an early anti-drug song, and one of two Buffy Sainte-Marie songs Don covered, the other being the more famous "Universal Soldier," also included here), and his three hit singles for Pye/Hickory: "Catch the Wind," "Colours" and the aforementioned "Universal Soldier." From there, it launches full-on into his Epic years (1966-76); for me, this collection truly opened my eyes to all Don's music, and the rarities were often the most revealing as to his talents. "Breezes of Patchulie," an outtake from the Sunshine Superman sessions, was nothing like its title would suggest--not some hippie dream, but real folkish angst with sitar and violin to add some colour. A decent selection of songs from the Mellow Yellow LP and A Gift From a Flower to a Garden, which hadn't been available at that point, plus tracks from Open Road, Cosmic Wheels, Essence to Essence, 7-Tease and Slow Down World, all of which had been out of print at the time, were also welcome additions, and only Don's best songs (no embarrassments like the oft-cited "Intergalactic Laxative"--even the title is embarrassing) were included. Of the later rarities, "What the Soul Desires" was my favourite, and one I still play for myself on my guitar even now.
In 1992, this was a much-needed career overview of Donovan's work; even now, in 2006, it's the best set of classic Donovan tracks. For the completist or rabid Donovan fan, I would recommend the box set Try for the Sun, as it gives you loads of rarities and tracks otherwise only available on imports (e.g. the HMS Donovan album, never given a US release) and dares to cover his comebacks (a track each from the Rick Rubin-produced Sutras from 1996 and 2004's Beat Cafe, which I also recommend highly), plus adding the film There Is an Ocean on DVD. But for those wanting more than just the obvious hits, but less than a real vault-raider, Troubadour is just what the doctor ordered.
Um... not a huge fan.......2006-09-12

Released four years after the Talking Heads called it a day with 1988's Naked, Popular Favorites provides a thorough overview of one of the most important American bands of the '80s. From tightly wound early efforts such as "Psycho Killer" and "Don't Worry About the Government" to the seriously funky likes of "I Zimbra" and "Burning Down the House," David Byrne, Jerry Harrison, Tina Weymouth, and Chris Franz grew as musicians as they stretched the original concepts of the unit to the breaking point. Over the course of two discs and 32 selections, the anthology chronicles the Heads' development from Bowery art punks (albeit of the most civil stripe) to unlikely arena stars. A smattering of unreleased tracks and notes from the original quartet nicely flesh out the retrospective. --Steven StolderCustomer Reviews:

If They're Not In The Rock 'n' Roll Hall Of Fame, Heads Should Roll!.......2007-03-20
I won't make a list of favorite songs like I normally do; there are many good ones. I will say, though, that the band was strongest when more of the band collaborated together on the songs than in the latter years (most of disc 2) when Byrne wrote most of the songs solo.
Another thing that I consider negative, more present in the booklets, is the unnecessary cussing from Byrne. This did give me a negative point of view towards Byrne in general.
I saw "Stop Making Sense" first, and that converted me to being a fan of the group. Actually, the first time I heard this cooled me off, but re-listening helped make me a bit more of a fan again.
Sounds great, sounds like they are right next to you........2007-01-26
Worthwhile; possibly obsolete.......2006-10-10
It's all great stuff, however, with the first disc showcasing the band's uncanny ability to merge art tendencies with pop instinct even as they were mastering their instruments, and the second bringing key tracks from some of the less-heard later albums to light.
Of special note is the superb re-mastering job by Bob Ludwig, which gives the early songs a punch and presence missing from the prior releases.
Strong compilation from a smart pop band.......2006-09-16
The pleasant surprise was Disc 1. Disc 1 focuses more on their earlier music from the late 70's, like "Life During Wartime." While I was familar with these hits as well, some of the more obscure songs on Disc 1 became my favorites on either disc. "Sugar on My Tongue" and "I Wish You Wouldn't Say That" stood out immediately as I was listening to them for the first time. I also liked some of the last songs on Disc 2 that they released before finally disbanding. "Sax and Violins" and especially "Lifetime Piling Up" come to mind. But that's what a good band does. Good bands produce timeless music throughout the decades that stand the test of time. This is a thorough compilation of a good band and a starting point for those becoming familiar with Talking Heads for the first time.

The pristine sound captures Marley at his poetic best, as his songs of protest & redemption draws the listener into the music. The performance touches the senses in highly subtle ways, which are uniquely found in Want More & No Woman No Cry. The vocal interplay between Marley & Rita Marley, Marcia Griffiths and Judy Mowatt tugs at your soul.
Even the obligatory - for American rock audiences - I Shot the Sheriff is delivered with an added punch. The extraordinary set (Disc One) culminates with Rat Race, with the band returning (Disc Two) for an encore of 28 minutes; Positive Vibration and Get Up Stand Up/No More Trouble/War.
This is Marley the artist at the peak of his creative powers and one of the best live performances ever captured on CD.

George Harrison was the best! .......2007-03-23
George Deserves Better!.......2006-11-23
The most obvious song missing from this collection is the single "This Song", from the record "33 1/3." It's a catchy pop song that charted quite successfully in 1976. Why they chose to include more obscure songs in this collection and omit this one, is baffling to me...
Also, two beautiful love songs, "Learning How to Love You" from the previously mentioned LP, as well as "Your Love is Forever" from the 1979 LP "George Harrison," deserved to have been included too. I honestly feel these are the two best love songs George Harrison ever wrote, as a solo artist.
I'm sure if you are a Harrison fan, you have other favorites that you wish were included in this collection too. This collection is far from complete and doesn't include all his best music for this period.
I hope one day that this CD, along with the "Best of George Harrison" collection, will be permanently deleted from the Harrison catalog. In their place they should release a comprehensive "Best of" double CD collection that spans his ENTIRE solo career from 1970-2000, including his two Traveling Wilburys records.
I think George Harrison deserves a much better "Best of" collection that truly showcases his talent as a musician, singer and songwriter.
A solid collection!.......2006-11-14
However, Harrison's work deserves a new, comprehensive collection spanning his entire solo career with all his hits and important songs in a single collection! His work merits it and his fans deserve it!

Contains indispensible Dark Horse tracks, why wasn't it remastered?!.......2006-08-14
The Dark Horse Box Set has two mysteries, IMHO. The first is, only Live in Japan is a hybrid SACD (why not all hybrid SACD?), the second is why weren't the three aforementioned tracks remastered and included with the box set?? (there are more tracks, too, like Lay His Head, that should have been included)
But should you pay an unreasonable price, if you have money to burn, go for it, even if you're just in it for the great music, they're not...

Elton John's Greatest Hits Vol 3.2.......2007-06-23
After the poorly recieved "Leather Jackets," Elton resigned with MCA and re-established his career with the "Live in Australia" album, Geffen issued a third Greatest Hits collection. It seems Elton must have retained the rights to his materail since this set came out within ten years on MCA and covers hits from "Blue Moves" to "Leather Jackets."
What this set does show is that, even in a somewhat shallow period of success, Elton John still could create finally tuned pop gems. From "Sorry Seems To Be The Hardest Word" to "Wrap Her Up" ("Heartache All Over The World" is one of the drops from the prior GHv3 set), this best-off really does pack on hits. It also misses a few key tracks ("Act Of War," "In Neon" and "Nobody Wins" would have been nice), yet includes one bona-fide oldie "Don't Go Breaking My Heart." You're still getting several top tens ("I Guess That's Why..." and "Sad Songs Say So Much" are now classics) to offer that proof of Elton's staying power.
The change between the two GHv3 is that this version has 13 songs (from the Geffen's 12), drops two songs ("Heartache All Over The Word" and "Too Low For Zero"), then adds "Sorry Seems...," "Who Wears These Shoes" and "Don't go Breaking My Heart." The cover art on this one is a step down from the Geffen version, but the sound quality is an improvement. And I always get a smile from hearing Elton and George Michael name-check everyone from Samantha Fox to Nancy Reagen (!?!) on "Wrap Her Up."

Culls from a Very Piano-less Period.......2007-01-16
It starts with that great "I Will Survive"-style anthem, "I'm Still Standing" that just oozes energy and optimism. Then there's his foray into Philadelphia Soul with the help of the great producer Thom Bell. Imagine using the Spinners as your backup group! As an African-American who grew up with this music, "Mama Can't Buy You Love" is an EXCELLENT production that some people like to make fun of for some reason. This is a GREAT production, and I'm always a sucker for a French horn! Besides, Elton John wasn't the first white performer featured on Soul Train for nothing!
"Sorry Seems to Be the Hardest Word" was reincarnated recently on the late Ray Charles' Genius Loves Company album. If Brother Ray loved this enough to record it with Sir Elton, that's good enough for me. But you sure have to be in the proper mood to listen to it. And that's OK; you can't dance ALL the time, can you? "Blue Eyes", even with it's fake string section and electronic Charlie Rich piano, has great production value.
Bernie Taupin is the master of metaphor, and his poignant tribute to fallen friend John Lennon is truly masterful. I'm glad I now have a copy of this recording. The Elton John band put their signature on it as well. Gorgeous.
By the late 70s I had stopped buying Elton John albums, so I discovered a couple of songs here that are really fun to listen to, that I don't remember on Oklahoma radio. ('Nuff said, there.) One is the rockin' "Kiss the Bride" with a Phil Collins-style drum beat and a bass line to beat the band (Dee Murray was an unofficial "funk brother" in my opinion), and the toe-tappin' head noddin' "Who Wears These Shoes" is sheer delight!
"Little Jeannie" is sweet, would have never envisioned a sax solo in an Elton song in the 70s, or electric piano for that matter! This song, for me, epitomizes the newer, softer Elton that made the transition from album rock to Top40 radio in the 80s. Stevie Wonder's harmonica on "I Guess That's Why You Call It Blues" is fabulous.
There's one boner in the bunch! What in the world was Elton into when he made "Wrap Her Up" with Wham's George Michael?! This one is pure garbage, and I hate to even say that about anything with Elton's name on it. If they needed a dance number, I would have rather they put "Bite Your Lip (Get Up and Dance)" from 1976's "Blue Moves" album. But "Wrap Her Up" is one that should have stayed on the album it came from and certainly not included on a hits package; unless it was, heaven forbid, actually a hit..
A common denominator of a lot of the songs from this collection is the glaring absence of Elton's signature piano work! Elton is first and foremost a piano man par excellence, and it seems his piano skills were purposely either de-emphasized or completely eliminated during this period. You barely hear the electric substitute in "Blue Eyes". It could be the Top40 radio influence of what 20-year-olds back then were buying and listening to. I don't know, I was in my twenties in the 80s, and I wasn't even listening to Elton John anymore.
Still, it was a sign of the times in the 80s when electronica ruled and "real" instruments where shunted in favor of Casios. Luckily for me and others who enjoy the master piano player's work, those days are over, and by the mid-nineties, he had re-discovered his old friend and brought it back to the forefront, once he got past all the Disney stuff. I think he needs to re-record "Who Wears These Shoes" at least and put that piano back in there! I would rate this collection, a good snapshot of the times, and other than one I would have definitely left off, a very listenable collection.

Pacific Overtures is one of Stephen Sondheim's most rewarding but least-appreciated works. Part of the reason is it's been one of the least-staged Sondheim shows due to its unusual requirements: following the conventions of the Japanese Noh play, it uses an all-Asian, all-male cast, and authentic instruments such as the shamisen. As a slice of history, John Weidman's book is fascinating: In 1853, Japan's borders were closed to all foreigners until the arrival of American Commodore Matthew Perry forced the opening of trade relations. Sondheim's score captures the delicacy of Japanese verse ("Poems"), a blackly humorous scene of the emperor's refusal to acknowledge the American ships ("Chrysanthemum Tea"), Gilbert & Sullivan-esque patter ("Please Hello"), and the most beautiful song ever written about prostitution (the lyric men's trio "Pretty Lady"). Worthy of special mention is the song Sondheim has often claimed as his best ever, "Someone in a Tree," which describes the crucial meeting in the treaty house from the perspective of different characters on the outside. Over a quarter century after its 1976 Broadway debut, Pacific Overtures began to enjoy increased attention from theater companies, culminating in a Broadway revival in 2004. --David HoriuchiCustomer Reviews:

Sondheim & Prince's offering for the U.S. Bicentennial.......2004-01-30
It didn't look like a Broadway musical. It sure didn't sound like Broadway music. The critics were mixed..a few loved it, several loathed it...but most admitted they didn't quite know what to make of it. Audiences went to see A CHORUS LINE (which would win the 1976 Tony award) and CHICAGO. PACIFIC OVERTURES was gone after 193 performances. The great experiment failed.
Or had it?
RCA did a cast album. Sales were slow at first but it eventually became one of their biggest sellers allowing more people a chance to hear this wonderful score. Regional theatres began exploring the possibility of doing the show. An off-Broadway revival in 1984 was critically lauded. A new production is planned for New York for 2005. It may never be as big as hit as LEZ MIZ, but for those looking for something different and exciting, PACIFIC OVERTURES will do very nicely.
I don't want to give away all the many details of the score: that would rob you of the thrill of discovering so much on your own. But a few "hints": Sondheim has long considered "Someone in a Tree" to be one of his favourite numbers; "Please Hello" is brilliant in weaving together musical styles for the U.S.; England; Holland; Russia & France as each country enters to set up trade with Japan. "Chrysanthemum Tea" has brilliant lyrics (including the lines "If the tea the Shogun drank will serve to keep the Shogun tranquil...") Notice too how the score becomes more "americanized" as it proceeds all the way to the finale "Next."
RCA has included a libretto and detailed synopsis. It will take a few serious listens (following along with the libretto) to begin to penetrate this work. Then, once you have fallen in love with it seek out the English National Opera's complete recording on Jay/TER which has the whole show, dialogue and music. It's not as well sung and acted as this original cast disc.

If one needed an object lesson in the fickle nature of Hollywood and its precipitously shifting tastes, one could do worse than to examine the career of the songwriting brothers Richard M. and Robert B. Sherman. After inventing veritable swaths of Disney's musical theme park, TV, and film legacies in the '50s and '60s (including Zorro, The Sword in the Stone, Mary Poppins, and The Jungle Book), the brothers found their talents largely underemployed in TV and film efforts after the death of Walt Disney. It isn't to say that their talents were in the least diminished, as this soundtrack to the 1976 U.K.-produced live-action adaptation of Cinderella ably attests. Fans of the Shermans' Disney canon should find this soundtrack restoration a welcome addition to their collections. The Shermans' music is a familiar, effervescent delight, even as it tackles the full emotional spectrum of romantic and familial entanglements, from Prince Edward's existential ponderings in "Why Can't I Be Two People?" through the king's Gilbert & Sullivan-esque take on royal bureaucracy in "Protocologically Correct" to the romantic pinings of "Secret Kingdom" and "He Danced with Me." The Slipper and the Rose is a musical cult favorite, and for good reason. --Jerry McCulleyCustomer Reviews:

While all of the songs with words are there, most of the background music is missing. There is the overture and the waltz theme, but no other background music. I was particularly disappointed in the absence of the music from the wedding.
Despite this, I am very glad I have purchased this CD and high recommend it.
