Perhaps best known for the hit "Send In the Clowns," Stephen Sondheim's glamorous 3/4 waltz-time musical recalls enchanted evenings, white kidskin elbow gloves, and romance of the green-eyed bittersweet and bed-hopping sort. The ruse is that these folks lead "ordinary lives": the father is widowed, remarries, and briefly rekindles a sack-side former flame; the son flirts with the maid; the child bride is cuckolded yet loves and is loved by the son; and the maid has a romp with the butler. Adapted from a mid-'50s Ingmar Bergman film, the play debuted in America in the early '70s and is set in Sweden's turn-of-the-century well-to-do society. Now remastered and heard at the dawn of the millennium, Night Music is a dated yet charmingly affected period piece, abundant in its sweeping theatricality. As an unhappily chaste newlywed, Len Cariou, Broadway's glistening middle-aged dandy, is smashing as Fredrick. Glynis Johns (who always sounds congested and quite cosmopolitan) steals focus as the delightful actress Desiree. Night Music is a foolishly fanciful, twinkly score swathed in plucky harp, sweeping strings, and coolly elegant conversational tunes. --Paige La Grone
Customer Reviews:
A Little Night Music (1973 Original Broadway Cast) - Sondheim.......2007-07-04
I saw the original Broadway play in New York with this cast. It was definitely off beat for the time and I wasn't so sure as the play started with operatic-like songs, but it took very little time for me to get fully into the mood of this musical. This is a tidy, sophisticated play with wonderfully nuanced lyrics and music. The pieces come through well on this recording. Thoroughly enjoyable.
A Wonderful Score- One of Sondheim's Best.......2007-07-02
I recently purchased this album after being taken by many of Sondheim's works, such as SWEENEY TODD, SUNDAY IN THE PARK WITH GEORGE, and FOLLIES. And I am so glad I purchased it.
It's a fantastic score, with a great cast. The melodies are sweeping and irresistable, the lyrics are witty and clever.
And how can you top this cast? Len Cariou turns in a great performance as Fredrick Egerman, and Glynis Johns is perfection as Desiree Armfeldt. Hermione Gingold is also fabulous as Mme. Armfeldt.
The best tracks on the CD are:
Now/Later/Soon
The Glamorous Life
Every Day A Little Death
Liasons
A Weekend in the Country
Send in the Clowns
The Miller's Son
Go out and buy A Little Night Music, you will not be dissapointed.
Sondheim's Best Musical.......2007-06-04
The beauty of the score sneaks up on you. The lyrics are Sondheim's most clever (The hands on the clock turn, but don't sing a nocturne just yet...) The singers do more than just sing the songs... They convey what they are feeling and thinking with their voices (which is wonderful for a broadway recording - we want to have the experience of being seated in a theatre watching the musical as well as listening to it). The music is magical, transporting us to wherever the characters want us to go (their memories, their hearts, their thoughts, their desires). The style of the music is a mixture of impressionistic (Ravel, Debussy, Poulenc, Satie, etc...), Classical (Bach - the only music to which Sondheim claims now to listen) and of course, Waltz. This mixture is exquisite. Send In The Clowns is NOT the best song in this musical, by far. The songs I will never tire of in this musical:
1)Overture and Night Waltz
2)Now
3)Soon (my favorite)
4)Every Day A Little Death (reminiscent of The Sound of Music's "How do solve a problem like Maria")
5)Night Waltz I
6)Night Waltz II
7)The Miller's Son (One Sondheim's own favorites)
The music and lyrics are brilliant. The performances by both the actors and orhestra are superb. Everything about this musical is amazing and wonderful. Enjoy.
Not that exciting.......2007-02-17
Seems silly, but the only reason I purchased this album was because my favourite version of SEND IN THE CLOWNS is sung by Glynis Johns.
I can understand why this did not have a long run on stage. It is based on an Ingmar Bergman play and he isn't the most cheerful writer. That is not to say I don't like Bergman. Stephen Sondheim made a mistake here but I now have one of my favourites, and it was written for the voice of Glynis Johns. Frank Sinatra also sings it but with a kind of couldn't care less attitude. Whoops now I have upset someone.
Goregous, Glorius, Genius...Sondheim!.......2006-08-02
After a long wait, I was finally able to own A Little Night Music, and I instantly fell in love with it. Although the show is known due to the huge hit "Send in the Clowns", the entire score is grand and spectacular. This is probably Sondheim's "prettiest" score due to the constant 3/4 waltz theme. The Night Waltz overture alone pulls the listener in with the subtle strings. The orchestrations just get better as the score continues. Highlights are probably "Now/Later/Soon", which cascades into a wonderful montage, "Every Day A Little Death", "It Would Have Been Wonderful", "The Miller's Son", and, of course, the congested wonder Glynis Johns with "Send in the Clowns". A true must-have for any lover of Sondheim.

Some of the greatest music I have ever heard. The man is a genious and way underrated!
ONLY FOR AVID BILLY JOEL FANS.......2007-04-16
Unless you are a die hard Billy Joel fan, this boxed set is not for you. It does not even live up to its name "Complete Hits Collection" because some of his hits have not been included notably "Sometimes A Fantasy" which was a top 40 hit and cannot as far as I know be found on any one of the numerous collections of Billy Joel retrospectives that have been issued over the years. For those of you who like his songs and would prefer a more handy and reasonably comprehensive collection I would recommend acquiring "Billy Joel The Ultimate Collection" which has 36 tracks including most of his hits. What's more, the lyrics for all the 36 songs are also provided and the sound quality is good too.
Billy Joel - 1973-97-Complete Hits Collection .......2007-03-27
Grew up listening to Billy Joel, but never owned an album. Became re-interested in his music just recently, and this album fits the bill for what I wanted to hear of his work. I know others who are more familiar with his work have posted comments saying song "x" is missing from some of the greatest hits albums, and this may be so, I don't know. All I know is, everything I wanted to hear was on this album.
A great compilation.......2007-03-13
Billy Joel has had a long and storied career as a singer. His style has morphed as his life has. This compilation of his hits spanning over 2 decades is both a tribute to his longevity and style of music. Listening to these songs gives you a great appreciation of how this style changed. From the catchy lyrics to the soulful ballads, this collection has it all. It's easy to just put a CD in the changer and get lost in the melodies that you grew up listening to. The quality of the sound from this collection is first-rate. If you are looking to follow along as a singer/songwriter matures, this is a great way to do it.
Wonderful music and interactives.......2007-03-12
Music, insight and lyrics. What else do you want from any artist.
Billy Joel delivers all that in this collection.

Very cool.

Short-lived and with only a limited output, this five-piece bluegrass band nevertheless helped spread the gospel of this extraordinary genre via the famous coattails of its most notorious member: Jerry Garcia. However, they were no novelty act. Breakdown is the second posthumous release culled from a series of 1973 concerts in San Francisco. At a robust 70 minutes, the album flows like a complete live set, featuring scrumptious musicianship and harmonious camaraderie. Much better than the eponymous debut from 1975--and a perfect second volume companion to 1996's equally worthy That High Lonesome Sound--Breakdown features covers of greats Bill Monroe and Flatt & Scruggs, originals by the band's guitarist Peter Rowan, fiddler Vassar Clements and banjoist Garcia. A must own for any fan of acoustic music and a great primer for bluegrass neophytes. --Greg Emmanuel

Breakdown: Live Recordings.......2007-05-12
Great Bluegrass music! A must have for the fan of the genre.
Real Bluegrass But With An Innovative Approach.......2006-01-20
What I like about this band is that is they are able to mix authentic bluegrass with a little something more experimental and unique. For example, the songs include several covers from bluegrass legends like Bill Monroe and the Stanley Brothers. But also some originals, mostly written by guitarist Peter Rowan. Actually I think Rowan demonstrates outstanding song writing ability on songs like "Panama Red" and "Midnight Moonlight". So it's a shame that he remained in relative obscurity as a musician. But still his music shines through on this album. I also love the mandolin sound of David Grisman and Vassar Clements' fiddle playing!
Among the traditional songs, I especially liked the patriotic "Down Where The River Bends" and the old gospel tune "Drifting Too Far From The Shore". It's ironic because the lyrics of these songs are so different from my personal experience and yet they manage to move me deeply. It's funny how music can do that to you. In any case, this is a fine album and I recommend it highly to both straight-up bluegrass lovers and rock fans drawn to it by Jerry Garcia. Good stuff!
Just Excellent!!.......2005-09-15
I grew up on bluegrass, and then as i got older I grew away from it. Years later I was listening to Led Zeppelin, Grateful Dead, etc.. It was after listening to "Cumberland Blues" off the Dead's Workingmans Dead album that I heard the banjo in the background. I found out later it was Garcia. Looked into it further and found Old & In the Way years ago. I've been playing banjo going on 14 years now because of Jerry, and the love for the music that I rediscovered. A lot of people put down his playing, but you try picking a banjo with your thumb, pointy and ring (middle finger was chopped off in accident as a child) and you'll see his handicap didn't slow him down. The rest of the musicians are excellent as well. Vassar was a fiddling Wonder! And the "dawg" is great as well. All three OAITW albums are classics!
Vassar--Goodbye and Hello.......2005-08-19
I agree wholeheartedly with reviewer Cox here. Most will come for Garcia, but will stay for Vassar. The group playing is a little ragged here and there (a live performance, after all), but so much is first rate bluegrass, and I've never heard Vassar Clements so fiery--more daring than on his work with Nitty Gritty DB (which is also splendid), Bela Fleck, or even on his solo albums. Grisman is a delight as always, bur VC steals the show. Sorry to say, I just read Vassar's obit in the NYTimes yesterday. Alas. But this CD is a reminder of his great talent.
Fantastic album.......2005-08-15
In short, this is one immensely satisfying bluegrass album. The three soloists (Garcia, Clements, and Grisman) are excellent, and Clements' fiddling is jaw-dropping. Grisman, as usual, displays a keen sense of phrasing and a still-astonishing speed. Garcia can actually play the banjo with some ability, though his solo breaks are usually restricted to the melody or some spruced-up chord progression. It's interesting that after almost every solo, Jerry gets some cheers--from G.D. fans, I imagine--while Grisman and Clements (both of whom are vastly superior to Garcia in bluegrass terms) rarely get much individual applause.
I'm not trying to disparage Garcia's playing--he definitely holds it together, and considering his G.D. history, I was surprised by his abilities.
The group excells at making the songs accessible, both in the choice of songs and in the playing.
Some particularly enjoyable songs:
Kissimmee Kid (Clements and Grisman shine)
Wild Horses
Midnight Moonlight
The Hobo Song
Buy this album immediately. It's certainly worth it; when I first bought it, it didn't leave my car stereo for about 2 weeks.

A blueprint for the early-'70s Laurel Canyon sound, Judee Sill's short-lived star was still shining brightly when she pulled into London for a pair of live shows in 1972 and 1973, recorded by the BBC. Sill performing entirely solo, her saintly voice is escorted only by acoustic guitar or piano on a playlist culled wholly from her 1971 self-titled debut and 1972's Heart Food. Only an eager audience's response between tracks and Sill's own timid introductions of what lies next remind you that the album is live. Apologizing for her thick accent, she tells of hearing "Lady-O" on the radio as recorded by the Turtles, her dreams of space-age raptures turning up in "Enchanted Sky Machines," and how "Down Where the Valleys Are Low" channels '50s R&B into a "religious love song." Then she utterly nails the diffident beauty so prevalent on her studio recordings, such as the meandering vocals of "Jesus Was a Crossmaker" and the nursery-rhyming "Lamb Ran Away with the Crown." Sill's nearly five-minute interview with the BBC's Bob Harris is a bonus, and a haunting peek into a future cut far too short. --Scott Holter

Customer Reviews:
Skippable Yet Great.......2007-07-05
This is not a great starting point for a new Judee Sill listener - those people should get her two albums, Judee Sill and Heart Food. And it's not necessarily something that a person who has those two albums will find worthwhile to have - there are no songs not on those albums, many of the songs included in these various live sessions are duplicated, and there are too many great songs from the first two albums that aren't represented (The Archetypal Man, The Desperado, et al). But having said all of that, I love this CD. Even though the live versions of the songs are not much different than the studio versions, it's a pleasure to listen Judee sitting there by herself, with just a guitar and piano, playing these sublime folk songs. And in her introductions to the songs, as well as the interview with Bob Harris, she sounds endearingly nervous, totally and painfully honest, and like the songs mean the world to her. Judee Sill is like a Joni Mitchell with much more danger around her. Judee was all these things in her short life: a reform school girl, a junkie, a prostitute, an acid head, a heartbroken lover, a supremely gifted songwriter, musician, and vocalist. She was a visionary. She was the first artist to have an album put out on David Geffen's Asylum Records, she was produced by Graham Nash, her songs were covered by the Hollies and the Turtles . . . yet her recording career never really took off. Judee Sill is a wonder, somebody who was just too troubled and too tragic to last long in this life. Her songs initially strike you as pleasant little folk tunes, but as you listen more the lyrics and the arrangements start to get into your head, and eventually you realize you are listening to something both beautiful and otherworldly. Get this disc to hear Judee perform live and to hear her talk, and if you don't have the first two albums, go get them as well.
Extraordinary performances, essential for fans.......2007-06-24
This is great. If no new songs, it's still marvelous to get the purity of Judee with just guitar or piano accompaniment. And the interviews are cool too, & informative about her attitude and POV. Some songs like "The Kiss" take on even more beautiful aspects I think. Maybe not the place to start for newcomers to her or
casual fans perhaps, but marvelous to have.

Mind Blowing.......2007-01-11
This stuff is great. So many people don't recognize who playing as they are only aware of Miller's later, more commercial tunes. This album is a great way to hear his earlier stuff (some with Mr. Boz Sgaggs) The sound is huge - they did a great digital transfer. Get into this!
A Good Compilation!.......2006-01-28
No question that Steve Miller is a fine blues guitarist who writes occsionally great songs. But apart from "Brave New World" I was never very impressed by his original albums; they seem uneven and most of them have a releatively very short playing tiume.
So here you get the cream of his early albums from 1968 to 1973. No songs are included from his first album "Children of Future", but his second is well represented with 4 tracks. Fine tracks; very interesting how much "Song for Our Ancesters" have in common with the feeling of Pink Floyd's "Dark Side of the Moon". "Living in the USA" is the most catchy/commercial of them and has a nice harmonica solo.
The finest album must be "Brave New World", and it also contibutes 4 songs to this collection. Actually four very different songs. "Kow Kow Calculatior" has a unforgettabele bluesy intro, "Space Cowboy" must be his mostly catchy song before "The Joker"; the acoustic "Seasons" is one his most beautiful ballads, and the strange "My Dark Hour" has Paul McCartney helping on vocals in the chorus. Quite an odd song, which somehow must have appealed to Badfinger, since it was part of their live-set for a couple of years.
Only two songs are taking from 1969's "Your Saving Grace"; both okay and featuring nice bluesy guitars, but as songs not particularly memorable.
Also two tracks form "Number 5". The optimistic "Going to the Country" is a logical choice, and "Going to Mexico" is a solid blues track.
Two fine live-recordings are also included, taken from his 1973 album "The Joker". One ( "Come on to my Kitchen") is Steve alone with his acoustic.
The title track is well-known as it was his first number one hit-single.
Good compilation!
Steve Miller Band - 'The Best Of, 1968 - 1973' (Capitol).......2005-11-23
Nineteen track compilation,of greatest hits, best known cuts, etc.Either way,it's a rather nice collection of those '70's gems many of us loved hearing on FM radio.Tunes like "The Joker","Living In The USA","Shu Ba Da Du Ma Ma Ma Ma"(hadn't heard this song in years),"Space Cowboy","Gangster Of Love","Little Girl" among others are here for your listening pleasure.Enjoy.
early steve, more bluesy and psychadelic.......2005-04-28
the music on here is not as immediately appealing as his hits from 1974-78, and the songs on here don't make as good a collection, but there are a lot of good old songs that are good listening on here. "my dark hour," "come on in my kitchen," and others showcase more of his songcrafting talents. There are several takes on older blues songs, and this music is essential to listen to for a complete Steve Miller collection. Get this one and the hits cd with the blue cover for all the Miller hits that matter (if you like Abracadabra, which I don't, you need to look somewhere else).
The Best Of The Early Years.......2002-09-24
This is the best of the Steve Miller band's early years. "Livin' In The USA" is a wry piece of social commentary, and "Goin' To The Country" reminds me of hanging out in Nyack, New York. The only problem with this compilation is that it represents the best of its era, not of the Steve Miller Band's entire career. However, this is only a minor quibble, especially when you consider the fact that Miller, like many rockers of his generation, believes that the young Australian tourist jailed in Indonesia on drug-smuggling charges was wrongfully convicted, as well as the wonderful material here.

Because he was gone by age 27, any opportunity to hear Gram Parsons in action is worthwhile. This record was recorded in front of a studio audience and broadcast live on WLIR in New York in March of 1973, a mere six months before Parsons's untimely death. Most of the material comes from his two solo albums (now collected on one CD) and his groundbreaking work with the Byrds and Burritos. Still, there are a few noteworthy additions to the canon, namely an urgent reading of Merle Haggard's "California Cottonfields," a roughshod '50s-rock medley, and the relatively obscure sacred tune "Country Baptizing," which was written by North Carolina fiddler Jim Shumate, a onetime member of both Bill Monroe's Blue Grass Boys and then Flatt & Scruggs's Foggy Mountain Boys. Parsons's touring band, the Fallen Angels, play with fire and looseness, especially Neil Flanz on pedal steel, and, of course, the wonderful Emmylou Harris harmonizes ever so passionately with the lead Fallen Angel. --Marc Greilsamer

The best way to remember Gram.......2006-09-06
For those of us who saw Gram on this tour, this is the record. Just a night or two before this was broadcast, Gram played almost the same set at Max's Kansas City--the only difference was his encore of Hank Williams's Jambalaya. What a night! I heard the original broadcast and taped it on a reel to reel and later transferred it to a cassette long before the complete concert was eventually issued. This is Gram. And Emmylou. And the touring band. Great songs and feeling that you don't find every day. Yea, I like the little that Gram left behind, but as far as live shows go, it beats the bootlegs of The Burritos or endless outtakes of the Reprise sessions. When I wish there were one more Gram Parsons album out there somewhere, I put this one on, and Gram lives.
Most Listened To CD in my Collection.......2006-03-18
This is the album that turned me onto Gram Parsons and then the Flying Burrito Brothers. I came across this purely by accident but what a gem it is. A long time fan of Emmylou Harris I'm simply blown away by the energetic yet beautiful duet. About the only thing more I could wish for is this CD to be longer or have a second disc I could buy.
Live and at their peak.......2006-01-29
I would personally place this album ahead of GP and slightly behind Grievous Angel in quality of performance. I find the DJ chat interesting in what it reveals about the personalities of the musicians on that fabled tour. The band sounds generally tight and exuberant, and I think this reflects the fact that they had been on tour for several months and had reached a level of comfort with each other. Several of the cuts are superior to their versions on the studio albums, particularly Love Hurts, The New Soft Shoe, and That's All It Took. Gram's voice is smoother here than it often was on GP. As has been mentioned, Glanz' performance on steel guitar is terrific, and I think that tour guitarist Jock Bartley's rock sensibility compares favorably with Jimmy Burton's work on the studio sides.
This album gives a wonderful insight into what those legendary tour shows must have been like, and for those fans who didn't or couldn't see Parsons live, this one is indispenseable.
Ground Breaker.......2005-10-30
Gram and Emmylou are fantastic. The band is loose and rocking and in great support of the ballads. Getting this album passed my expectations and made me forever love Gram's music and inspiration.
Politically Correct remaster.......2005-05-14
It's ironic a previous reviewer complained about the talking between takes. On the original vinyl version, the song "Drug Store Truck Drivin Man" was dedicated to the then governor of California, Ronald Ray Gun. Listening to this remix is like listening to a reformed 60s stoner explain why kids should vote Republican and shouldn't smoke grass.
It's too bad that the survivors don't have the courage of their, 1973, convictions.
Find the record somewhere in a cutout bin instead.
Too bad the ratings only go down to 1 star. I'd give it less. Waste of time and money.

Great Live Collection.......2007-06-06
I picked this CD up from Starbuck's the other day because I noticed there was a Previously Undreleased live version of No Woman, No Cry. I proceeded to listen to the album on the ride home the next day. The great thing about Marley and the Wailers is one song can be listened to with excitement, and the same song can later serve as a lullaby at a later time. With over half of the tracks Previously Unreleased, I highly recommend this to any Marley fan - casual or fanatic.
The disc is comprised of 13 live recordings from five shows performed between 1973 and 1975. I'll go ahead and list basic information from the booklet since Amazon currently lacks in that department for this particular release. Note: According to the booklet, Peter Tosh is featured on the first nine tracks.
Track 1 - Rastaman Chant (Previously Unreleased) Paris Theatre, London, May 24, 1973 (For a BBC Broadcast)

On the opposite side of the digipack cover is a quote that sums up any Bob Marley live recording: "The beauty of Marley's music is that while it holds a special significance for the sufferers of the world, it speaks to any listener with an open heart ... The rhythms are as close as your heartbeat, the voice speaks a language the spirit understands. And yes, when it hits, you feel no pain." - Robert Palmer, RollingStone, 1994

What a shame.......2007-06-27
Excellent work by The Poppy Family. They were on the threshold of real success, but their breakup finished that possibility. What a shame, as this collection shows their great potential. Definitely worth the investment.
One of the BEST female vocalist I've heard!!!.......2007-03-28
I was exploring Amazon when I came across this album and listened to the short media clips when I was totally blown away by Susan Jacks' vocals. When I finally received the album and listened to it all the way through I became an instant fan of The Poppy Family. Their music is so dark but upbeat at the same time. There are also some truly beautiful songs on this CD like "You Took My Moonlight Away", and "Which Way You Goin' Billy?", there are also some awesome rock songs like "There's No Blood in Bone". Wow, every song on this album is good. There is no possible way you can go wrong!
Underrated Canadian Pop Group.......2005-12-07
I enjoyed this collection very much. My favorite by far is "Where evil grows" with that great bassline. I discovered this song from a friend who bought it in a 10 cent promo bin. I also was pleased with the single version of "That's where I went wrong". "There's no blood in bone" features a very elaborate phasing gimmick. Susan is very gifted in the vocal department. Her voice has a certain melencollie to it and she is very underrated. "Which way you going Billy" and "I was wondering" are also fine. This cd was a big surprise.
21 Savory Golden Pop Nugget Delicacies.......2005-07-10
There is no justice in this world when songs as good as these lie buried beneath a mountain of mediocre music as we listen over and over and over again to the same 300 tunes on "oldies" radio!
I recently took a chance on this CD having only an introductory knowledge of the Poppy Family (the one megahit and the three tiny followup hits). Boy, did I hit the jackpot!
There are two great things about the Poppy Family:
First, that voice! Susan Jacks, I apologize on behalf of all music lovers that we do not speak your name in the same sentence as Linda Ronstadt, Carole King, Carly Simon, Karen Carpenter, etc. when discussing talented women of song.
And second, those arrangements! With almost all of the nuggets clocking in at under three minutes, Terry Jacks brilliantly succeeds at crafting some of the most unusual, haunting, and beautiful melodies that I have heard in years. Yes, you can think about the insightful lyrics but you can also contemplate the music itself and that is a rare thing in popland (the Left Banke comes to mind).
I love all of the tracks on this collection. If I was going to be stranded at sea and could only bring three tracks with me, they would be: "You Took My Moonlight Away", "I Was Wondering", and "I'll See You There" (apparently Terry's favorite song according to the liner notes).
Those savory pop nuggets are just a click away!
Definately; A Good Thing Lost !.......2005-05-31
AAAAAH reminisce and enjoy; and that's exactly what I do when I listen to Susan and Terry Jacks and The Poppy Family. Susan's voice is beautiful. To me; this CD is great. The songs, Which Way You Goin' Billy, Good Friends, I'll See You There, That's Where I Went Wrong, (both versions) and, Tryin, are my favorites and several more of their tunes on this disc are very soothing and enjoyable.
1970s, Which Way You Goin' Billy, was The Poppy Family's biggest hit in the U.S. and a big hit it was. Nothing short of brilliant. This, The Poppy Family; A Good Thing Lost: 1968-1973, is the only compilation on CD by this band so I purchased it while I still could. The sound quality is great and it is nice to be able to sit down and listen to their music once again. I believe it was money well spent. The sad part about it all is time takes it's toll on so many of the bands from days gone by. I fill lucky to have found this compilation. Music is one of only a few things that is still left from different eras and the only thing that keeps some of it from being completely forgotten is our memory.....I definitely recommend this CD!
Final Interesting Note: The beautiful song, Tryin, was originally wrote by Terry for Tammy Wynette.

NOT a Bacharach/David masterpiece!.......2007-04-01
The movie was woeful..the soundtrack just as bad...and Hals lyrics were NEVER this bad...however for any Bacharach fan this is a must have....beautifully restored and reproduced.
Hilarious version of Lost Horizon!.......2007-03-27
This film came out in 1973 and I saw it in its original full length version (about 3hours and 15 min.) Executives from Columbia Pictures were there, it was the premeire, and they were groaning and at the intermission fights broke out(verbal) and ushers passed among them and myself and everyone else with soundtrack albums. The executives left the theatre and scaled the albums across Columbus Circle in Boston and I and a few friends retrieved them and had quite a few for free. We returned to the film and I have always loved this crazy redition of Lost Horizon, the miscasting, the terrible sets, the odd ball music for the story, the dubbed Liv Ullmann, the dance routines of Olivia Hussey..all of it. You cannot find a musical like it, or a soundtrack like it. Columbia execs were unimaginative; they should have believed in this film. The next day after this premeire in Boston, New York etc. (simultaneous I suppose) the film was cut, the posters were taken down..there was a ton of material to buy..T Shirts, dolls, posters of all sizes, bath towels with the poster on them, records of the sd tk of course, and small pop up sets of the entire film. It was to be a massive hit..In two days time all of the paraphanalia was removed, and the posters said, Last Two Weeks, and in two weeks the whole thing disappeared.
But many people came to see it..lines of people, and, when they heard it had been cut, they gave up, and in two weeks everyone said farewell to this film.
I have many treasures from that opening nite, and now I have the CD of the sound track. Anyone who loves movie magic or madness has to see and hear this film; it is unique.
Enjoy this soundtrack and get your hands on a DVD ..they are out there!
Starts Great...then falls apart.......2007-01-08
Leonard Maltin said it best:
The first 1/2 hour is terrific and THEN...the movie turns into a gooey musical.
Some of the songs are quite tuneful with very complex melodies and rhythms...but those LYRICS ???? Not exactly Hal David's best work, apparently he and Burt Bacharach didn't quite mesh on this one.
The singers should have been dubbed although Sally Kellerman isn't half bad on "Things I Will Not Miss" but blows it on "Reflections." (Not her fault.)
Then, the last 1/2 hour seems rushed and while the ending works...it lacks the emotional punch needed to put it over.
Anyway, a lot to like, but a lot of "what WERE they thinking?"
3-Stars may seem high, but looking back as a curio item, it is warranted...but you were warned (John Gielgud as an Asian???)
journey back to Shangri-La..........2007-01-04
In the early 1970s, an era when the movie musical genre had a brief resurgance in popularity, Columbia Pictures decided to revive their 1937 fantasy gem LOST HORIZON, and turn it into a musical. With Burt Bacharach and Hal David committed to write the score, and the cast headed by Peter Finch and Liv Ullmann, LOST HORIZON crashed and burned horribly at the box-office; nevertheless, the film has a rabid following and the soundtrack album conjures back those magical sounds of Shangri-La.
The main reason why the film never worked was the contemporary `70s music, which seemed out-of-place within the period setting of the story. On the soundtrack, you can just sit back and appreciate the soaring melodies, which Bacharach obviously had a ball composing. The liner notes of the CD reveal the number of stars who had their singing dubbed (obviously Peter Finch and Olivia Hussey). Liv Ullmann's voice was dubbed by Diana Lee (who also dubbed Samantha Eggar in "Doctor Dolittle", and Charlie's mother in "Willy Wonka & the Chocolate Factory"). Interestingly, despite being dubbed here, Liv Ullmann later starred in a Broadway musical version of "I Remember Mama", so her own warbling must have been of some merit...
Sally Kellerman, a non-singer, nevertheless decided to record her own vocals, and as a result "The Things I Will Not Miss" is one of the best songs; other standouts include "The World is a Circle" and "I Come to You". The sound quality of the CD is acceptable; taken from the best-surviving analogue master tapes. There is often some harsh analogue distortion throughout, but nothing too obtrusive.
A must for admirers of Bacharach, or fans of the musicals.

many outside the u.s. enjoyed the movie.......2006-08-24
when the movie came out in the philippines in 1973, the "movie-in-the-making" special was replayed many times on afternoon tv. it showed the fifth dimension performing "living together," as well as burt bacharach conducting the orchestra, performing the title theme.
wish that "special" is available on dvd, it is as memorable---probably even more---than the movie.
the fifth dimension also performed songs not in the movie, such as the spiritual "nobody knows the trouble i've seen."
many outside the u.s. enjoyed the movie, as can be seen in the many customer's reviews.
at that time, at a young age, i couldn't understand why it was a flop in the u.s., when it created a lot of buzz in this part of the world.

It deserved better.......2007-07-05
I've often wondered if I'm the only person alive who saw "Seesaw!" It's been sadly neglected. Michele Lee was wonderful, and it was a great introduction to a guy named Tommy Tune.. The music is very enjoyable. Highly recommended for Broadway show lovers!
SEESAW (1973 ORIGINAL BROADWAY CAST).......2007-01-27
I SAW THIS SHOW AND LOVED EVERY MOMENT. I TILL REMEMBER HOW MUCH FUN I HAD. I WAS IN COLLEGE AT THE TIME AND HAD THE GREAT OPPORTUNITY TO SEE IT AGAIN. THE SCORE IS WONDERFUL, TUNEFUL AND MEMORABLE.
A Broadway nadir........2004-09-14
With all due respect to Cy Coleman and Dorothy Fields, both of whom made major contributions to the Broadway canon, this must be one of the weakest musical scores ever committed to vinyl. Worst of all, it bears no relation to the poignant two-character play on which it is based. Just who was it who wanted that tender little play to be enhanced by a big campy production number starring Tommy Tune?
Michele Lee sings Cy Coleman's most underrated score.......2004-01-28
SEESAW was a musical version of William Gibson's rueful comedy-drama TWO FOR THE SEESAW, which originally starred Anne Bancroft. For the musical version, the leading lady was the delightful Michele Lee (BRAVO GIOVANNI) who earned a Tony nomination for her performance.
The Cy Coleman-Dorothy Fields score includes great numbers like "Nobody Does It Like Me", "In Tune" and the 11 o'clock number "Poor Everybody Else".
The supporting cast includes the always-reliable Tommy Tune, as well as Ken Howard, Cecelia Norfleet and LaMonte DesFontaines.
Highly-recommended for fans of Broadway musicals as well as the incantory Miss Michele Lee. [DRG CDRG6108]
This Seesaw is merely quirky fun.......1999-08-22
Cy Coleman's Seesaw overture is a wonderful start to a wonderfully breezy CD. Most of the chorus numbers are very poor ( Spanglish, Ride Out the Storm), but the spotlighted Michele Lee, Ken Howard, and Tommy Tune are preserved fantastically. Michele Lee's husky voice is capable of making your heart soar and break at the same time. Her comedic timing is wonderful (Welcome to Holiday Inn), her down-on-her-luck song is perfection(Nobody Does It Like Me), and Poor Everybody Else will have you rooting for Michele instantly. Ken Howard is truly a Lovable Lunatic. And Tommy Tune's Tony Award winning performance is captured here with "It's Not Where You Start." It is typically Coleman music, but he is wonderfully aided with Dorothy Fields's lyrics. If you can find it for a discount, don't resist!
