Sure, it screams mid-1980s as joyously as any John Hughes teen flick, but this debut--from perhaps the only German export to sound positively gleeful--deserves as long a nostalgic afterlife as Soft Cell's "Tainted Love," Yaz's "Only You" or mid-period Depeche Mode. Forget OMD's "If You Leave," "Forever Young" is the best should-be prom-theme the decade produced. While "Big in Japan" was the KROQ anthem, everything here is deliriously tuneful. Revel in the manic melodies of "The Jet-Set," delight in the guilty synth-pleasure of "Sounds Like a Melody," surrender to the international romantic intrigue of "To Germany with Love," and hope that VH-1 re-discovers them for a reunion tour. --David Daley

This was a present for my husband and as soon as he got it, he played it in our car CD player right away. I thought I only knew one song, but hearing all of the songs made me realize I've heard most of them...and they were good. Our 3-year old even loves it. He would complain if we turn down the volume.

The band is wonderful...their style, music, and lyrics! Would recommend it...especially for nostalgic reasons.

Alphaville was one of the best Europop acts of the 80's and has some really memorable stuff on this phenomenal, funky album.
The joi de vivre of The Ringing Of your Laughter, the sad Forever young and the bouncy big In Japan were all hits of the 80's you'll want to remember, and listen to again...and again.

One of my favorite albums from the 80's, needed to add it to my CD collection.

High-class Debut.......2006-05-23

There are very few classic New Wave/ Synth/ Pop/ Pop-Rock bands coming from 80s squeezed through the ever-shape-shifting landspace of 90s reaching to stomach-churningly despisable 2000s...IMHO Pet Shop Boys, Depeche Mode and New Order are the untouchables of those bands, in the very same order of talent and musical genius.

Likewise there are some great debut albums that have a special place in my heart from that magical era. One of them is PSB's Please, a magical journey through the eye of a disappointed but cultured materialistic yuppie. Another is, though much more efervescant pop, is AHA's Hunting High and Low...and there is also Alphaville, the creators of that smash worldwide hit Big In Japan. Their debut, Forever Young is a small-scaled masterpiece.

If you were not living in a cave in 80s, you should have already known about Big In Japan, Sounds Like a Melody and the heaven-like Forever Young. They were on air play, on TV, in discos, almost omnipresent songs that shook the hearts and brains of mid-80 youth and teenages. They are simply gorgeous pop songs and will remain so forever.

Two opening songs of the album are also suberp, Summer in Berlin being the outstanding of them. That said, the album slightly loses steam in the middle, only to raise above the clouds with that saintly Forever Young and then the rest flows like a smooth river until it reaches the sea.

Alphaville's debut once more points out that though 80s music might sound cheesy and date, the best of the New Wave/ Pop bands working in that era were doing the music with their hearts in it, with love and passion, to express their worldly feelings, with sophisticated, highly ambigious, but clever intellectual lyrics backed by grandiose and lush synth arrangements...a sharp contrast to current fake, insincere and manufactured musical landscape of today. What a pity!

A bit Bowie, a bit Ultravox, a bit Depeche Mode, a bit of everything 80s, you must enjoy this debut album...It is at your peril if you don't...

This set lends itself to greatly enhancing one's knowledge of the orchestra, instruments in it, and their usage. I am a huge music buff, and I still picked up a great deal I previously did not know. I highly recommend this for all who wish to understand the origin of music, as well as the processes that are employed to create music!

This CD is excellent for the beginner or expert! To be able to haear the instrumets separately and then together really provides a good education. and/or refresher. The book thaty comes with the CD is alomost worth the price by itself!

Very Informative and Enjoyable.......2006-11-20

Whether you're a music novice or pro, "The instruments of the Orchestra" is a very worthwhile purchase. The 7 CDs, with a total of 8 hours, are expertly narrated by Jeremy Siepmann. He's a great speaker, very much like the late Leonard Bernstein was. Mr. Siepmann takes you on an unforgetable musical journey covering the origins and use of the various orchestral instruments throughout musical history. The balance between his narration and a wealth of musical examples, which range from snippets to entire movements, is superb. The comprehensive enclosed booklet is excellent and faithfully follows the 7 CDs in content. Even with my 40+ years of music training I still learned new things from this wonderful collection. Considering the excellence of the content, and a cost that translates to about $5 per disc, this collection is a great value. Grab it, you won't regret that you did. Five solid stars!

This boxed set of CD's with booklet achieved all I had hoped that it would. There are good samples of individual instruments and well done commentary on each. The only drawback was that some of the samples were too brief and could have been longer, hoiwever I guess this fits in with time constraints of the medium. It has given me a lot of clues as to future purchases of CD's for listening to individual instruments. Altogeth a satisfactory purchase and a welcome addition to my collection.

Excellent Intro for Those Not Familiar with the Orchestra.......2003-11-08

I've listened to classical music for years and am interested in composition. I bought this CD set to learn how an orchestra and its instruments work. I thought the CDs would be a nice but boring lecture. They aren't! Not only are they FUN but they are informative as well. I learned a huge amount from each CD and couldn't wait to listen to the next one.

The narrator and writer is a great speaker and holds your attention well. He is definitely knowledgeable. He provides musical examples for each point he makes, so you get to "hear" what he just talked about. I'd say the CDs are about 65% music and 35% narration. You'll learn about the range of instruments, some history, different ways to play them, how they sound, and how they are used in the orchestra. This CD set was a great learning experience and is sold at such a low price!

I recommend this CD for those who want to learn about classical music and those who know about it but are interested in learning more about the inner workings of an orchestra. You'll learn much useful information. For instance, the Rite of Spring (with that eerie start) is written for bassoon! I never knew a bassoon could sound like that but now I do.

The one complaint I have is the last CD. This deals with the orchestra. I wanted more of a tour of how the orchestra has been used through history up to the present. Instead, it was a tour of how different groups of instruments sound. I thought it could have been better. The other 6 CDs are excellent.

If you are looking for just one solid collection of memorable movie themes, this is it. Other CDs mix marches and fanfares with quieter tracks, which makes for a jarring listening experience at times. This CD, however, has a consistent feel all the way through. Melodic, calming, and, best of all, interesting. These movie tracks weren't selected simply for their sound, but also because they are GOOD. You get the best of the best: James Horner, Alan Silvestri, Jerry Goldsmith, John Williams, Ennio Morricone, and Randy Edelman.

Hollywood veteran Julie Andrews has had a glorious career, but not without its downsides. Her legend is built on "The Sound of Music" and "Mary Poppins" and other glorious roles. Her abilities as a singer were never impressive or great, her voice often sounded weak, but she always knew how to sing around her very limited vocal range. On this collection she performs some of the greatest Broadway tunes ever written and even though she does a good job, her voice just doesn't hold up against many of these tunes. Her warmth is felt all over the album, in "Here I'll Stay" she wraps her gentle, but narrow, voice around it and in "My Funny Valentine" she sticks to the lower register of her voice. However, in the re-recording of her classic "Sound of Music" and in "On a Clear Day You Can See Forever" her voice fails her, it often sounds thin and airy and it's actually quite sad to listen to. When all is said and done Julie Andrews remains a great talent, and most of that talent is largely due to her amazing capability as a performer and her genuine warmth.

I FELL IN LOVE WITH JULIE ALL OVER AGAIN.......2005-06-25

As a young kid growing up in the Philippines I remember my Dad playing his state-of-the-art Aiwa tape recorder back in the 60s and hearing Julie Andrews' voice - truly the voice of an angel! Now, hearing these songs again with adult ears I fell in love with her voice all over again !

A Great Julie Andrews CD.......2002-01-27

If you are a fan of Dame Julie's and musicals, this is the cd for you. It is a compilation of songs from prevously released albums; The King and I, The Music of Richard Rodgers, Here I'll Stay, and Victor/Victoria, Original Broadway Cast Recording.
I found the material to be very well put together giving the listener selections from My Fair Lady, Camelot, The Sound of Music, Victor/Victoria and others. What more could you want?
As for Ms. Andrews, she is superb. There is simply no one like her. I have heard comments that prior to the infamous throat surgery she was unable to handle the difficult material and hit those high notes. This is just not true. All you have to do is listen to these songs recorded in the early 90's to know that she still had a marvelous voice. Lets hope that one day she will be able to sing and record again. If not, these may be her last recordings so treasure them.

The My Fair Lady suite is wonderful and Ms. Andrews definitely hit the high note at the end of "I Could Have Danced All Night".
Her version of "Edelweiss" and "The Sound of Music" are lovely.
Also worth listening to is "Living in the Shadows" written for the Broadway production of Victor/Victoria so you won't find it on the movie soundtrack. The lyrics are by Leslie Bricusse who also penned "Crazy World", which is another great selection on this cd.

Overall this is a cd worth having in your collection, so buy it today. Otherwise you are missing out.

Climbing Every Mountain with Mary Poppins.......2002-01-22

Julie Andrews and her music have been an inspiration to me
every since I stepped into a theater and watched Mary Poppins
(many years ago). I admire her talent and her voice on this CD. I know it is not as clear a voice as she used to have but I still enjoy listening to her. I listen to this CD when I want a "pick me up" and am proud to have it as part of my collection.

Most of the conglomerate music companies have pretty much thrown in the towel when it comes to mining the vaults of rock and roll's early golden era. Thankfully, Eric Records, the small but potent label has graced the market with their outstanding single-artist and compilation CD's often offering the music of artists not found elsewhere. Anyone can throw together CD's of the top-10 songs over and over again but Eric has chosen to rescue many of the forgotten and overlooked tunes that many listeners still remember and want to hear again. Their "Hard To Find" series of CD's has been a collector's paradise. Now, in a new series, Eric continues to offer more rarely, if ever, found golden-era teenager tunes wrapped around a number of the more popular songs of the day. And in keeping with their high standards, these CD's offer the best in sound quality and are accompanied by insightful liner notes. This first volume, "Love Me Forever", in their new "Teen Time" series, offers eight top-10 songs, five top-20 charters and a sprinkling of chart-challanged sides. Though leaning toward the casual listener's musical memory, this piece does offer a few first-time-to-CD tunes represented by the Four Esquires' "Love Me Forever" and Cathy Carr's "First Anniversary" making it equally intriguing to the completist collector. While the appeal of the included tracks is an individual consideration, no domestic label puts together better compilation CD's than Eric and this new entry is another outstanding example of how it should be done.

Outstanding In Every Way!.......2004-04-19

There's no other way to put it than to say that this CD is flawless! How do they do it? Even the tracks that you might already have on other collections pale in comparison to the sound reproduced here. Some of the highlights here are the stereo single version of Fortuneteller by Bobby Curtola (debut), the stereo single version of First Anniversary by Cathy Carr (another CD debut), as well as CD debuts by Valerie Carr, Ed Townsend, and Cathy Carroll, and all the other tracks that will make your previous CD's obsolete. This is a must-have, for all serious collectors of the music of the first golden era of pop/rock. Bravo!

Elmer Bernstein Film Music Collection.......2006-11-03

This is compilation of hit film music from one of the greatest composers in motion pictures. What is surprising though is the music not included like the Ghost And The Darkness, the 13th Warrior, Rudy and others. To be sure, 4 discs are not enough for a composure of this stature. THe recording, however, is an "engineering masterpiece" which makes the music even more enjoyable than when you first heard it at the movies. When are we ging to get the music that was omittd from this compilaton?

Overall a strong Goldsmith sampler.......2006-04-11

Okay, this is a CD review, so the focus is on music, but I've got to say this first: this has got to be a contender for the ugliest cover art ever. I mean, come on...instead of a tribute to the composer, the cover looks like someone spilled a glass of merlot over a NASA photo.

Fortunately, even an ugly cover will not ruin good music. And the good news is that I'd say about 75 percent of the music is good....and on a 4 cd set, that's a lot. Like other Silva compilations, the strength of this compilation is the variety. There are selections from the big releases (Star Trek, Omen, Rambo), but there is also a healthy dose of tracks from the smaller releases(Under Fire, Lionheart, The Swarm).

Two examples come to mind. Capricorn One and The Great Train Robbery are two movies that are not exactly household names today, but are dominated by two of Goldmith's finest main themes. The City of Prague Philharmonic come through with terrific renditions. And there are plenty of other strong performances...a few being concert versions conducted by Goldsmith himself. Suprisingly, "The Wind and the Lion" works, which is no small accomplishment given the ferentic original performance of "Raisuli Attacks".

It's not a complete success. A few of the performances fall flat, particularly some of the more inventive scores. Total Recall is just bad, mangling the performance with poor percussion and synthesizer choices to boot. Also a letdown is the Klingon Attack from the first Star Trek movie. The Prague Philhamonic attempt doesn't sound bad--it's just that once you've heard the original soundtrack's "blaster beam" with enough bass to rattle your teeth...well let's just say Silva's version is a little tinny in comparison.

But I shouldn't dwell on the negative. Overall, this is a strong sampler of Goldsmith's variety. There are plenty of quality performances here, and despite a few omissions (noticeably Planet of the Apes)this is a very good release from Silva.

It was wonderful to hear Mr. Goldsmith's music that went all the way back to The Man from UNCLE, The Waltons, Dr Kildare, etc. And then to hear his music up to the present. The man was a genius!

Almost the perfect compilation.......2005-12-31

Age has its value.... This sweeping collection of compositions brings back so many great memories. This collection shows how significant Goldsmith was for both the movie screen and the small screen. With such a grand collection, every reader can be assured that at least one movie or TV program they like or remember had Goldsmith's contribution. It was an amazing life and the collection well worth having.

However, as sweepig as it is, there are a few holes in the selection. "First Contact", one of the sweetest and richest compositions from the Star Trek is absent. "The Ghost and the Darkness" is missing and the "Medicine Man" music should include the theme song. By dwelling on several selections from the Blue Max, these were squeezed out. Three full and important movie themes got the axe.

However, all but "The Ghost and the Darkness" are readily available and not overly expensive as is the "Ghost" CD. This is a must have for the TV and movie music fan.

Before there was Hans Solo there was Napolean Solo, before ER there was Dr. Kildare. Jerry Goldsmith IS Sci-Fi. "Resistance is futile.. you MUST assimilate this CD collection."

Better than a four.......1999-11-21

I know I wrote the last (and only) review here, but I just had to write again now that I've listened to it more. I just can't stop! It's really a great CD, and the music is all very good. While after my first listening, I didn't think it a five star, I would definitely say now that it is. Based on the fact that there are no other reviews here, that must mean not many people have it, or have checked it out. But they're missing something great, especially if they're a Goldsmith fan. Sorry about the more negative (although 4 stars still isn't bad) review, but this is what I really think about the CD after listening to it more. Definitely get it!

Not the best, but not too bad!.......1999-11-13

Upon hearing the music in the movie, I really liked the romantic, and action cues. So I bought the soundtrack. I was not dissapointed. The Love Theme is very pretty, and woven into a variety of tracks. Some of the secondary music is great as well, including an action theme that really sounds great, and keeps your attention. I can see what the Videohound is saying when it comes to Goldsmith's usually flamboyant themes, this isn't one of those. But it's pretty just the same. There isn't any music that just gets on my nerves and I want to skip, which is always nice. The last track, "The Very Thought of You", is a nice touch of nostalgia, and fits with the era of the movie (That, besides the fact that it's an integral part of the movie). The one bummer is that it's not longer. The whole CD isn't quite 40 mins. However, Rudy (Another of Goldsmith's works, and in my opinion his best), which is my favorite overall soundtrack (out of the 60 or so I've listened to), is even shorter, and that doesn't diminish the value of the CD. I believe the same is true here. It may not be real long, but what's here is nice and worth getting. This probably deserves more like 4 and a half stars. If you liked the movie, I'm sure you'll like the soundtrack. Plus, if you like Goldsmith, you'll want to add this to your collection. And if you like romantic music, put on the Love Theme, turn the lights down low, and bask in it's ambience. You'll feel

G A Lankester's review is right on except the Westbury performance referred to is part of the RCA catalog and it is up to Sony/BMG what version is released.

We have several Nina re-releases of her marvelous RCA era - now on this issue, at last, we have the full recording of my all time Simone favourite, "Why the King of Love Is Dead".
At last we hear the song, the passion in all its glory and hellfire anger. Tell you what folks - I have heard this song often before (in edited 5 minute sound bites) - hearing the full (12.55) version will leave you drained - I cried the first and second time I listened it was so moving.
I reckon RCA must have quaked at its message. Despite the "I ain't about to be non violent honey" rhetoric - this is the most forgiving and humane message song ever recorded.

Please Andy Stroud and Lisa Kelly, executors of Nina's estate, release the full and unexpurgated version of the April 7, 1968 Westbury Music Fair concert. It has to be the ultimate testomony to an icon of the 20th century.
Then if RCA/BMG can keep their nerve release all the 1967 to 1974 material Dr Simone recorded/outakes and all. We would learn much for decades to come.

young gifted to old mastery.......2006-03-26

I have loved Nina Simone's ferocity and intelligence and music forever. She is very very real. a resource to draw upon in this dark time when truth seems scarce. I give this album 5 stars on the strength of the single track that I've heard...West Wind. I heard this song on the radio while I was driving late one night recently and was transported by its power. An African prayer for transcendence, the song begins in a whisper and builds slowly upon the accompaniment of a band of truly master drummers to a place of shining mystery, freedom, and release. Nina sings with breathtaking wisdom fully aware of all complacent dangers, praying for us all to be taken up and lifted to safety. Nina for president!!

As I listen to this album I really feel as if I'm sitting at the edge of the ocean, with my feet just barely being touched by the cool water. I can be at the Sea while doing homework, when in bed and about to fall asleep, or while eating dinner by candlelight.

That is what I like about this album...for I truly do believe that music has healing powers--much like the famed "Mozart Affect". Especially when I listen to the "Pastoral" and "Joyful" pieces--beautiful renditions of what Beethoven surely must have heard even when he was deaf. Just beautiful...simply relaxing and peaceful.

Great cover.......2002-12-20

I loved this remix when it came out years ago. I just found it in my cd collection again and listened to it. I've heard a few covers of this classic and this one has got to be the best one. It has alot of the same greatness the original one had.

The remixes are great, not too crazy about the last one though.

The album is great too.
