Bawdy blues belter Kane reaffirms her role as the 21st-century Bessie Smith with another satisfying collection of smart, sexy, and well-sung discourses on the pleasures and pitfalls of physical love. Despite her sexy mama image Kane is no novelty act; she's a first-class singer with enlightened musical sensibilities and that's why she always attracts high-quality help. Longtime guitarist Jeffrey P. Ross, jazz saxophonist Brandon Fields, the infamous Rev. Billy C. Wirtz, and bluesman Charlie Musselwhite, who adds some harp on "Put It All In There" and guitar and vocals on "What's That Smell," offer expert assistance but it's Kane's sly take on the sexes that carries the show. She kicks off things with a testifying rendition of the Etta James classic "Something's Got a Hold On Me" before romping through several witty originals and unexpected covers. The title track, delivered with grownup glee, is indeed the Led Zeppelin song and once you've heard Kane's rendition the boyish bravado of the original will never sound the same again. "Fit, Fat, and Fine," with jumpish horns helping out, is a swinging feminine update of Willie Dixon's "Three Hundred Pounds of Joy" while "Lion in My House," like Kane herself, is simply something that has to be heard to be believed. --Michael Point
Customer Reviews:
Whole Lotta Love.......2006-08-13
Candye Kane has a very strong voice. Although Whole Lotta Love is a Willie Dixon song, it is most equated with Led Zeppelin. Candye really belts the song out and could probably give Robert Plant of Led Zeppelin a run for his money. If you enjoy the blues, I recommend this one.
One of the best CDs of the year - JUST BUY IT!.......2006-08-03
I first saw Candye at the American Music Festival at Fitgerald's near Chicago a few years back. She blew me away with her voice, her humor, and charisma. But even that didn't prepare me for how much I love this CD. EVERY song is wonderful, you won't be hitting the FF on this. It just leaps out of your speakers and grabs you and doesn't let go. It works if you're in a mellow mood or if you want to rock.
We all need a Whole Lotta Love!.......2005-12-13
Something's got a hold on me right now - it's Candye Kane's "Whole Lotta Love"! The rythm, the sound, her voice - it pulls you right out of your chair. The songs are outstanding and very diverse, and her "Fit, Fat, and Fine" is a great dedication to voluptuous women.
Listening to Candye's music keeps your blood circulating and like the title of the CD's last song I am certain that "I'm not getting older" as long as I listen to this invigorating music. And you should, too.
This woman is a dream!!!!!!!.......2005-11-14
My god, I have never been this infatuated with a fat woman before... jeez, she is beautiful! And she can sing too! How cool is that... an incredibly sexy woman with a very good singing voice?
Great album from the "Queen of The Blues" of today..........2005-06-16
They called Bessie Smith & Dinah Washington "Queens of the Blues" in thier days. Well there are not too many queens today, simply because there is a shortage of traditional female blues singers(the only other I can think of is Janiva Magness). I think Miss Kane should be crowned the "Queen of The Blues" of the new milleneum! This cd shows she can sing Bessie Smith 1920's style tunes, backed by a piano, or even Bo Carter style dirty 1930's style ditties like "What's That I Smell" backed by a guitar(she sounds natural in the delta blues setting). She also does well as T-Bone Walker style stuff, as well as Louios Jordan style horn infused good time rockin'/swing/jump blues. Mostly the periods she sounds in are the 20's-50's, and the soul drenched blues cover of Etta James' "Something's Got A Hold On Me".
Great cd, great band, and an awesome singer whose voice sounds unique, with a touch of Big Maybeelle, mixed with Wanda Jackson.

Soothing sounds of Led Zeppelin..........2005-03-01
Before I write my review, I thought you would like to know that I have not had a chance to listen to "Kashmir: The Symphonic Led Zeppelin". Keep that in mind if you are trying to decide between the two.
I think I would consider myself an average Led Zeppelin fan. I appreciate their music, and I listen to them every so often. I'm not one of the hardcore Zeppelin fans, so you might not appreciate this tribute as much as I do. I would have to say that this tribute is very well done, and a lot of time and effort was put into making it. The strings are pretty much in sync with the original songs, and just a few seconds into the song, you'll be able to tell what it is. I'm not going to go through a list of songs and tell you what I think of them, but I will say that I think the best one is "Ten Years Gone." This album - or albums, I should say - are great if you're looking for a soothing and relaxing version of some of the great Led Zeppelin songs. Though, I must say that you will only appreciate the tribute if you know the songs themselves, because if you don't then the song just might get repetetive. I'm a fan of the whole String Quartet Tribute thing, and I'd have to say that this is one of the best ones I've heard so far.
Not my cup of tea.......2003-11-18
For some reason this CD just sounded really corney to me. I was really dissapointed. Your opinion may differ but I would recommend that if you are looking for a classical Zeppelin CD you get Kashmir instead. It is cheaper and shines a new light on some awsome songs rather than butchering them.
Finally, Led Zeppelin Done Well in Strings........2003-02-20
A few of the selections are questionable for arrangment for a string section. I mean, Whole Lotta Love? Dazed and Confused? Give me a break. They could have replaced those poor choices with a number of other possibilities.
Nevertheless, it is the first attempt of it's kind, and the songs that are suitable are gorgeously performed.
Led Zeppelin's gifts for creating melodies and knowledge of music theory become more obvious in these classical performances.
It's a double CD so it has lots of songs!

Coming from the people who brought you the excellent Blues Power: Songs of Eric Clapton, it's no surprise that this tribute (oops, the CD cover says, "This Ain't No Tribute," sorry) features a lot of the same musicians. This anthology is likely to upset purists, who may not actually want a Delta-style "When the Levee Breaks" (courtesy of Magic Slim), but check out that harp work from James Cotton on the more upbeat, Chicago version! And Alvin "Youngblood" Hart's take on "Heartbreaker" simply must be heard to be believed; ditto for what Chris Thomas King does with "Hey Hey What Can I Do." Meanwhile, "Rock 'n' Roll" proves that Clarence "Gatemouth" Brown really can do whatever he wants and get away with it. As was said before, Whole Lotta Blues will annoy Zeppelin purists. But blues fans oughta love it. --Genevieve Williams
Customer Reviews:
Not Your Best Blues !.......2001-11-06
A lot of hay has been made of the fact that Led Zeppelin appropriated old blues songs and made them their own, often, without ever crediting the original source. Lawsuits were filed, eventually settled and a CD containing the original, unadulterated, tunes as recorded by the likes of Memphis Minnie, Robert Johnson and Sleepy John Estes was released under the title of "Early Blues Roots of Led Zeppelin". The songs on the "Roots" recording are not the actual Led Zeppelin tunes, but rather the closely related tunes that blues historians contend Led Zeppelin ripped off and claimed to have written. This disc goes the next step, taking the songs as recorded by Led Zeppelin and asking blues musician's to record them as if the songs were their own. The circle is now complete as they say.
The unfortunate part of this story is that the reincarnation of these numbers fails to capture and hold the attention of the listener. In other words, the concept seems to fail where Led Zeppelin succeeded. For example, Otis Rush' interpretation of "I Can't Quit You" can best be described as funk-lite, complete with drum machines, and the performance does not contain the raw energy of the Led Zeppelin numbers. Not all is a total loss however, as there are some good takes on the disc. James Cotton, for example, blows some serious harp on "Whole Lotta Love" and is accompanied by both Joe Louis Walker on vocals and Alvin Youngblood Hart on acoustic guitar. Overall, the recording falls far short of it's objective. Blues fans, if they haven't done so already, will not embrace Led Zeppelin as a result of the performances on this disc. Whatever the original source was for the Zeppelin tunes, Zeppelin staked them out as their own and spoiled us with their high energy takes on these tunes. For blues fans, "Early Roots" should be investigated. Zeppelin fans should also look elsewhere.
Rock'n Roll/Blues experience full of intensity!!!.......2001-03-13
We always enjoyed rock'n roll musicians reverencing the great blues Masters of the past! So,what a problem about blues musicians doing the same thing with the best rock'n roll "underground" band ever,Led Zeppelin??And what magical stupendous cd!!They've played with intense heart feelings!!! The interpretations of all of them, are trully lessons about how to play rock'n roll with bluesy style! All of the musicians are great!!! What we can say about all of the entire cd is FANTASTIC!! I really recommend an accurated attention to Otis Clay's version of" Since i've been loving you".Sincerely one of the most emotional interpretations of a music in the blues history, and specially great because what is being played is Zeppelin's music!!! To the rock'n roll fans, and bluesfans all, everywhere,A MUST!!!!!
The Roots of Zeppelin..........2000-09-30
Everyone who is a fan of Led Zeppelin understands that being experimental was a standard for them. At the same time, it's no secret that Zeppelin left the ground by recreating old Blues standards, originally recorded by artists they considered The Masters. This album is symbolic of exactly where Led Zeppelin, and Rock and Roll in general, came from. If you're a Blues lover, you'll really enjoy the raw acoustic sound of Custard Pie, Bring It On Home (Part 1), and When The Levee Breaks (Part 1). Others will enjoy the "thicker" performances of those songs revisited. It's fun to listen to the whole album and understand why Zeppelin had such an affection for this soulful style of music. It's also understandable why Zep wasn't very well received when first bursting onto the scene. Their edgy interpretations of old blues tunes were often called "bastardized" by critics. Yet in spite of the initial negative reaction, the boys knew that what they had begun was magical...pressing on to show more of their talent and diversity. Blues is the most heartfelt kind of music you'll ever hear. If you've never seen a live Blues performance, you should by all means do so. This was the heart and soul that helped make Led Zeppelin the legends they are.
whole lotta blues.......2000-03-26
Absolutely amazing! I'm a Led Zeppelin fan as well as a blues lover. This CD captures some incredible renditions of some very good Led Zepp songs. It's the best of both these worlds.Alvin "Youngblood" Hart's version of Heartbreaker is mind blowing.I like it better than Led Zepp's version(sorry L.Z. fans). This CD is a "must have" for blues lovers!
You Don't Have To Be A Zep Fan To Love This CD.......2000-02-26
This CD is the real thing - real artists performing real blues. I half expected a disk full of gimmicky superficial performances, but since I was intrigued with the concept I placed my order anyway. I'm glad I did! This CD is now one of my favorites, one I listen to often, especially those times when I just can't make up my mind what I want to hear. It always satisfies. The fact that the songs are from Zeppelin is really of secondary importance to the sheer magic of the cuts. Order this CD, go directly to the second cut to get your blood boiling, then settle in and listen to the whole thing. I think you'll be hooked.

Great under-the-radar talent.......2007-03-11
I saw this New York artist during a summer concert series in our town and was immediately hooked. He sings in the vein of John Mayer and Jason Mraz (jazzy mellow with a smoky quality). His lyrics strike an emotional chord, ranging from deep angst to playful. My absolute favorite is "Ain't No Thing is Perfect." The strings on "Dust in the Wind" are great. Good songs for radio play include "One More Day" and "Summer." If you get a chance to hear him live or get your hands on his CD, go for it.

Customer Reviews:
Trendy Music for all ages.......2000-11-14
Perfect! Great tunes! I loved it and highly recommend it! A nice surprise to music lovers of all ages.
Innovative, perfectly performed - watch out Led Zeppelin!.......1999-07-27
If you are a rock and roll fan, this collection of classic rock and roll, arranged for string quartet by Juilliard-trained musicians, will make a classical music lover out of you. If you are a classical music fan, the arrangements and musicality will make you appreciate the complexities of contemporary and classic rock. Every song contains nuances and influences of the greatest composers (Vivaldi in "Scarborough Fair", Bartok in "Satisfaction", George Harrison in "Friends", Copeland in "Blackbird"). The arrangements, especially in "Sympathy" and "Stairway", are faithful to the originals. The "Who" material ("Who Are You"/See Me, Feel Me - Pinball Wizard") is energetic and makes you remember how great "Tommy" was. All in all, the CD is great to listen to if you are looking for a change of pace, and it's even better when you take time to really listen to the music and the arrangements. Highly Recommended for any connoisseur of music.
