5 out of 5 stars Has all of the good ones!.......2007-04-28

This one is perfect if you are looking for all of The Police & Stings best hits!

5 out of 5 stars Truly Classic in every sense of the word!.......2007-03-01

I grew up listening to the band "The Police" and always liked the different pop sound and songwriting they did. Although in later years I myself did not follow Sting's solo albums much, I had to pick this up. This album has all the classic songs like "Message in a bottle" and "Roxanne". This album does show you that Sting WAS the Police, because I don't know how else the band could even keep that name without him. Other great songs like the mystical "Walking on the Moon" and the famous super hit "Every breath you take" are also on here. From what this fan can tell, this is maybe the best single CD "best of" if you don't already have the boxed set "Message in a box: The complete recordings". The nice thing is that on this CD you have some of Sting's own wonderful songs like "Fields of Gold". All I can say, if you liked the Police, Sting on his own or both I think this album is a must have for any fan.

5 out of 5 stars Sting is King!.......2007-01-13

This has to be the best music CD I have ever owned. Sting has an incredible voice. All of his songs tell stories. I especially enjoy "Don't Stand So Close To Me". It is the story of a male teacher being subtlely seduced by a girl in his classroom, but he resists the urge to satisfy her desires. That is the way of life. There is always that impulsive feeling to do what one would like to do even though it would be a huge mistake to do so. Stories like that were clearly made possible by Sting's Catholic faith. Everyone should listen to this album. It is so romantic. Sting sang from the heart. It's obvious that he was in love during the making of this album.

4 out of 5 stars Great CD.......2006-11-03

This is a great CD for Sting and Police fans. Highly recommended.

5 out of 5 stars Best of Sting is Best.......2006-07-08

There's Sting and there's the Police--with good anthologies available for each. So the purpose of this collection is less than clear. Taken cold, it's a patchy, half-way approach that asserts a dubious continuity between Sting's solo work and the Police tracks that made him famous. In fact, it suggests that people want old Police songs chiefly because Sting is featured on them. Well, that's not necessarily the case. Regardless, besides offering an update of "Roxanne," this collection features a mini-album's worth of top-flight Police hits and a similar selection of Sting tracks. For more of either, look elsewhere. --Gavin McNett

5 out of 5 stars A great introduction to The Police.......2005-08-12

I had heard a few tracks from The Police--notably Message in a Bottle, Every Little Thing She Does is Magic, and Every Breath You Take--and decided to check out the rest of their stuff. Even though most of these songs are 20-25 years old, they are still works of art.

Most of the major songs are on this album. Some are Sting after he disbanded The Police, and others are of the band itself.

The majority of Americans have probably heard several of these songs. In case you haven't or if you weren't alive in the 1980s, they are well written and are great for easy listening. The only one on this album that I don't care for is the Puff Daddy remix of Roxanne, as I thought it ruined the song. All the others are awesome. I would list my favorites, but I realized that I liked almost all of them. If I had to choose my top three, it would be nine, ten, and eleven.

People of all ages should be exposed to this music. The Police, hands down, is one of the greatest bands of all time.

3 out of 5 stars It's Okay.......2003-01-03

There really isn't a whole lot to say about this. The music of course is good, and of course there are good songs here. However, you'll find the same songs on better and more representative collections of Sting's solo efforts and of The Police's group hits.

4 out of 5 stars Good 4 Casual Listeners, Not Mandatory 4 Police/Sting Fans.......2002-12-31

"The Very Best of Sting & The Police" isn't a CD that will satisfy everyone, but it's a good primer for the more casual listener. This is obvious in the '97 Puff Daddy remix of "Roxanne," which will probably appeal to younger R&B fans who aren't familiar with The Police or Sting. But for the discerning fan, this isn't a necessary CD. Not all of the hits are on here (there's not enough room anyway), though I would have gladly traded a few songs (like the misplaced "Roxanne" remix) for tracks like "Murder By Numbers," "Driven to Tears," "So Lonely," "King of Pain" or "Wrapped Around Your Finger." I'm relieved that at least "Every Breath You Take" and "Don't Stand So Close To Me" are on here. (Yes, I'm obviously a Police fan. :) There's nothing visually remarkable about the booklet either (no photos, lyrics, etc.), only the brooding shot of Sting on the front cover, which isn't bad, but I would have expected more from a hits collection. So, unless you're an avid Sting/Police fan and will collect anything by him/them, I'd skip this CD and try the 4-disc box set "Message in a Box: The Complete Recordings" (for Police fans) or "Fields of Gold: The Best of Sting 1984-1994" (for Sting fans).

2 out of 5 stars Why Bother?.......2002-11-05

The music on this disc ranges from 3 stars to 5 stars, which would give it an average of 4.5 But I'm subtracting 1 star for false advertising and 1.5 stars for the abyssmal remix of Roxanne. There are a lot of problems with this CD.

For starters, some of the best songs, like "King of Pain", aren't even on it. And this isn't MY personal opinion. "King of Pain" was a chart-topping grammy-nominated tune. In fact, it sold more copies and got more airplay than most of the other singles on this disc. Wouldn't that make it a "best of" hit?

And why are there NO tracks from "The Soul Cages"? "All This Time" sold a whole lot more records than "Desert Rose" or "Russians".

So clearly, this is not "The Very Best Of"

Why else might you buy it?

Well, if you're a fan, you'd want to be completist and get it for the Roxanne remix. Don't bother, it is TERRIBLE. It is really really really bad. Really. I now want to invent a time machine to go back to a point before I ever heard it.

If you're NOT a fan, you might want an intro to the band and it's music. Well then please indulge me in a little quick education so you'll understand why this is NOT the disc for you.

Sting and The Police are two seperate entities. The Police was a Rock Band infused with punk and reggae stylings. Sting is a singer/songwriter.

While Sting may have written most of The Police's songs (and all of their hits), the idea for the band came from Stewart Copeland and the sound of the band owes much more to the atmosphereric arrangements and keyboard work of Andy Summers. The Police are certainly one of the greatest bands of the 80s and had a great influence on the 90s.

The Police sold out Shea Stadium. Sting sold out Jones Beach.

That is NOT to say that Sting's stuff is poor. Far from it. Sting's first three solo albums "The Soul Cages" (1990) and "Nothing Like The Sun" (1988) and the be-bop influenced "Dream of the Blue Turtles" (1986) have a level of sophistication in songwriting, production, and lyrics that are a cut above The Police's stuff in many ways. But they are very different.

Then there's Sting's recent stuff.

There is this great Onion parody editorial "written" by Sting entitled "You Know, I Used To Be Cool Once." In it "Sting" reminisces on the period in his life where he wrote abrasive challenging tunes. A time before he became the Compaq spokesperson and began writing songs for Disney movies.

Sometime shortly after 1991 things started going downhill. Whatever you want to call it, "Mercury Falling", "Brand New Day" and "Ten Summoner's Tales" are sub-par.

So if you're not a fan, and you're looking for an introduction, I'd like to recommend getting The Police's Greatest Hits collection "Every Breath You Take". Then, if you're looking for something else, pick up "All This Time, Sting's Greatest Hits" or one of his first three solo albums (which all top the greatest hits).

But don't sell yourself short by buying this disc. There's no reason for this disc even to exist!

4 out of 5 stars A hodgepodge Sting & Police collection.......2002-06-30

I do not have even a sketchy idea of what a&m was thinking when they put this collection together. There were already two excellent collections by both Sting and the Police but separately.

Stings Fields Of Gold: Best of 1984-1994 is a good sampler of Stings music from 1985s Dream Of The Blue Turtle through 1993s Ten Sumners Tales. That album contains some new(at the time) material. The Polices Every Breath You Take:The Classics is another good collection of their biggest hits. Those two collections are wonderful retrospectives.

This album I must admit is more like a slapdash of selected material of those two albums but unlike those two this CD unfortunately fails to live up to the worthiness of those two. In fact this should have been titled Sting and The Police: A Sampler Collection because so much good material is left out. Where is King Of Pain, Wrapped Around Your Finger, or the intimate Fragile??!!

The thing that makes this CD less worthy than the other two hits collections is the trash can fodder 1997 P.Diddy mix of Roxanne. What on Gods Green Earth were they thinking?? He butchered a marvelous classic. The original is sort of reggaeish and great but the rapping on the 1997 mix throws out all of the artistic qualities of the original.

For veteran fans while I am not bashing this CD apart this CD is not the best place to start. I strongly recommend getting Fields Of Gold: 1984-1994 or Ten Sumners Tales first then Dream of The Blue Turtles and then go from there. I would recommend this Very Best Of(if you could call it that)CD for the newbie fanbase or for those who have never heard Stings or the Polices music. Both Sting and the Police have made great music but for most fans like myself there is no real point in wasting your time or money on this CD.
