Coward Spinning in Grave.......2007-05-12
Amy resemblance beween the witty, ironic, cutting-edge music of Noel Coward and this CD is negligible, except in the title song. The musicians had no concept of these songs and probably had never heard them before. The people singing could not read music. (I.e., the melodies were wrong.) The percussion totally drowned out everything else. The musical director and producer of this CD had no clue what they were doing. The arrangements are among the worst I have ever heard of anybody's literate music. I play the piano and specialize in 20th century Broadsway, London, and Hollywood music. This was the worst CD of its kind I have ever heard. (And it didn't have to be this way -- the cenntennial recording of Cole Porter's similar music, "Red Hot & Blue," nicely updated, sung, and arranged by then contemporary singers, was a wonderful introduction for the uninitiated to the sophisticated music of people like Kern, Porter, Coward, Weill, etc. -- the musical giants of the 20th century.)
A disgraceful Travesty.......2006-07-05
Words cannot describe the disgust I feel for what this group of "artists" has done to the work of Noel Coward. Avoid it like poison.
Forget it...Forget it...Forget it..........2005-04-04
The idea is not bad. Contemporary pop performers doing classic Noel Coward songs. Unfortunately, despite some talented individuals, the songs are almost without exception ruined by interpretations that destroy Cowards' sense of melody, tempo and lyric.
The word abysmal comes to mind. Coward was understated, subtle, mischievous, sentimental and melodic in his music. These characteristics are undiscovered on these performances.
Paul McCartney is one of the few who tries to do Coward justice and seems to at least have the musical sensibilty to understand what his song is about. Even Elton John, who has the ability and talent to do better, sadly disappoints on Twentieth Century Blues.
If you want contemporary Noel Coward, look at the cast CD of All For Love, the 1999 show featuring Twiggy and Harry Groener. They get it right!
Twentieth Century Blues: Songs of Noel Coward.......2004-05-28
I was extremely disappointed in this recording. If someone had tried to destroy the music of this famous British composer they could not have done a better job. A couple of the tracks we OK, Paul McCartney and Sting tried to sing the songs as they were meant to be sung and are the only saving grace and the reason I will keep this CD, but otherwise the artists did a poor job. Mad Dogs and Englishmen was absolutely destroyed and the witty piece Don't Put Your Daughter on the Stage was sung as a Rap song, it was horrible. The beautiful wartime song London Pride, that could bring tears to the eyes of a Londoner, was unrecognizable. Do not buy this CD, if you long to hear the songs as they were intended to be sung.
NOEL COWARD: ALMOST UNKILLABLE..........2002-06-04
It's a 'cute' sort of idea -- take a group of current 'pop' music icons and have them personalize, as it were, the rather creaky songs of the late Noel Coward. It's also cute to have such artist as Paul McCartney, Marianne Faithful, and Elton John slug their way through Coward's sophisticated lyrics, and even the inclusion of (Oh, my!) The Pet Shop Boys, Sting, Texas, and Suede, can't really deter the almost unkillable Coward music. A universally recognized theatre artist, Coward's plays have survived for decades (note the current Broadway hit of his "PRIVATE LIVES"), but except for cabaret and revue type treatments, his musicals are very rarely revived and, I believe, rather unknown to the general public. One of the reasons for this is because his works were rarely recorded by others and few came into the 'popular' market. Coward's music (not unlike most all his work) was often times created for himself and his voice -- at least in terms of nuance, delivery and style -- and few others have been able to 'get away' with that. For the novice 'Coward' fan the cd is a suitable menu of Coward's work, and it should be noted that the endeavor is a not-for-profit release with proceeds going to the Red Hot AIDS Charitable Trust, so no harm done. However, the die-hard fans of that eclectic listing of artists who get this cd because of them, will probably be disappointed if not down-right befuddled. The recording itself (technically, the sound, etc.) is Mah--velous!

Album Description
Known as the "Father of the Blues," W.C. Handy was America's most successful African-American composer during the early 20th Century. His "Memphis Blues" and "St. Louis Blues" were among the most popular songs of the day and secured his place in music history. "St. Louis Blues" was the most recorded song in America between 1914 and 1928. While Handy only recorded a handful of his own compositions, this CD recreates Handy's Memphis Blues Band the way it sounded around 1920 and is the first comprehensive recording produced specifically as a tribute to one of America's most important composers. The instrumentation is identical to that of Handy's--trumpet, trombone, clarinet, saxophone, violin, banjo, piano and tuba. Recorded in Memphis (1999-2000) and produced by Carl Wolfe, the audio quality is pristine and captures the exuberance of the era. All 21 tracks are instrumentals. This CD is indispensable for any jazz or blues enthusiast.
Customer Reviews:
Best of the Blues:.......2007-05-14
What made me purchase this CD was from a movie I saw on Tv called "St. Louis Blues" starring Nat King Cole. 1944b/w.
It was of coarse the life story of W.C. Handy from Memphis Tennessee, who came from a strick religious background and developed the love for Jazz and the Blues. I watched this movie as I was trying to understand the nature of his dad who was a preacher in Memphis and wanted his son to follow in his footsteps to spread the word of the Lord.
But he didn't and went in another direction and his pursuit of Jazz.
W.C. Handy's music at it's finest!.......2003-04-23
This CD is an excellent and an authenic display of W.C. Handy's wonderful compositions. Many blues and jazz musicians have covered these wonderful tunes throughout the 20th and now 21st century but few have heard what these songs originally sounded like. By using the instrumention of the original W.C. Handy band and through clever arrangemnts by Carl Wolfe, this CD is a musical reenactment of how the W.C. Handy band sounded back in the 1910's and early 20's. Each song on this CD has been a musical gem since its publishing(these songs range from 1909 to 1932) but being able to hear them in their original form is a true treat. I feel that the music of W.C. Handy is entertaining, fun, and timeless. This CD can be enjoyed by anyone who likes music. Also, if you would like the sheet music to these great songs I recommend the book "Blues: An Anthology" by W.C. Handy.

Customer Reviews:
a voice teacher and early music fan.......2006-03-25
I have always admired the nonchalant and somewhat dry humor of Noel Coward lyrics, not to mention the interesting twists and turns that his music often takes, I admire Ian Bostridge for attempting his songs and doing a "bang-up" job of it! A quote from Ian Bostridge prior to making this recording:"My first concern while contemplating a disc of Noel Corward songs was finding a voice for them,,,,,,We need to remember that, in Coward, we have not only a formidable playwright and screenwriter, but also the English equivalent of Irving Berlin or Cole Porter". After I heard this from Bostridge (on an interview on ABC) I began to appreciate the songs much more than previously. There is much philosophising going on as in "I Travel Alone" and some are quite humorous as in "Mad Dogs and Englishmen". One has to listen more than once to get it all, but it's worth the time. And I definately think that Ian found the voice to sing them.Do I prefer Bostridge singing classical??Of course!!!!!But I still enjoy a break now and then and I'll take this disc for that reason.
Mad dogs and an Englishman called Ian .......2005-09-02
I must say that I approached this album as a fan of Ian rather than Noel Coward (and admittedly still don't really have a good idea of who the man is). So in terms of Ian's singing, I like it a lot. He has a wonderfully dextrous voice and a clear tone, complemented by Jeffrey Tate on the piano and the soprano Sophie Daneman for several numbers.
Generally I find myself unable to appreciate the work of classical singers who do crossover albums, but Ian is an exception. It has been said elsewhere that he may lack a robustness in his voice, but here in fact, one would not wish for an overpowering tenor. He isn't at all overblown, unlike many other singers in crossovers. The lightness of his voice lends a kind of intimacy to these recordings, as if he were singing in a café or an at-home musical evening.
The material is, of course, a departure from Schubert, &c., but he handles it well. However, I do think that he has a better emotional feel for the 19th century German romanticists and the 20th century British classical composers (i.e. Britten). This recording is pleasant but it seems to me to lack the emotional depth of Ian's Schumann in particular - a perceived deficiency that might lie with the composer Coward rather than the performer.
I like to listen to this CD when I want to listen to Ian sing, but am not in the mood for his more serious/depressing recordings (a la Schubert & Britten). The lyrics are pretty inane, the same goes for the songs themselves - melodically speaking - but Ian makes them special. So four stars.
Coward the Composer, Quite Charming without the Camp.......2002-11-18
I love this CD. I have a collection of Noel Coward performing his major songs, and I found it entertaining, but frankly I was never much drawn to it after the initial novelty wore off. I never really appreciated Coward as a composer because his campy persona and limited vocal talents got in the way. I bought this CD as a gift for a big Coward fan, and I am ashamed that I have not yet given it to him because I enjoy it so much. Bostridge is a really fine tenor. The beauty and subtlety of his voice bring out the beauty of Coward's melodies and the wit of his lyrics without overwhelming them with a heavy and mannered "classical" style, which is the bane of most such "crossover" CDs. The CD is also beautifully recorded. Outstanding songs include "I Travel Alone," "Parisian Pierrot," "World Weary," and "A Room with a View." Bostridge also has just the right touch with the goofier songs like "Mad Dogs and Englishmen," "Something to do with Spring," and "Any Little Fish." I highly recommend this CD to anyone who enjoys witty cabaret songs in general and Coward in particular. It really did give me a new and greater appreciation of Coward's considerable talents as a composer.
COWARD'S THEATRE SONGS.......2002-09-30
Sometimes musical artists should NOT attempt cross-over albums. I am a huge fan of Jessye Norman, Leontyne Price and Joan Sutherland, but their ventures into "popular" music were, at best, misguided and, at worst, heavy-handed and pretentious. Although Ian Bostridge does not embarrass himself, there is no question that he should stick to more "serious" music and leave musical comedy to other singers.
The theatre songs of Noel Coward take a very different kind of approach than Bostridge gives them. They need an actor who happens to be singing. Except for a very few of the songs on this CD (written by Coward for operettas instead of musical comedies) Bostridge's approach is absolutely without any character. All of these numbers are impeccably sung by Bostridge, but none of them are ever really acted. Coward's songs MUST be acted whether they were written in a comic or sentimental vein. The result is another misfired cross-over album in what otherwise is a splendid career.

Customer Reviews:
The style is the man--and the song.......2001-05-02
Many composers have chosen to perform their own material and commit it to discs, with mixed results. Only with Noel Coward do we feel that a good deal of the charm of his numbers lies in the very way he performs them. For proof, we now have the Naxos Nostalgia
(8.120529), which dishes up 16 tracks of the ultra-refined son of W. S.Gilbert, giving us six selections from "This Year of Grace," one from "Bittersweet," a medley of treasures from his "Cavalcade," another from his other works, and a few other trifles that are better than most of what is written today.
Add to all this two classical scenes with Coward and co-star Gertrude Lawrence from his "Private Lives," incredibly valuable for those local drama groups who butcher this work in that this CD can teach them the tone and rhythms that are essential in making this classic succeed.
The subtitle of this set is "The Complete Recordings, Volume 1: 1928-1932." So we can look forward to future offerings featuring this fascinating composer-lyricist-performer. Thank you, Naxos, yet again.

A pop surprise.......2001-03-04
I think this compilation is marvelous. With covers by the Pet Shop Boys, Marianne Faithfull, Robbie Williams, Sting, Elton John, and a host of others, this CD is pure pop pleasure. I bought it for the Robbie Williams track, and I've found every track enchanting. If you like the "Red Hot +" CDs, then this will certainly suit your fancy.
Cool Coward.......2000-01-20
A great CD. The artists and the songs are a perfect match. Texas and Pet Shop Boys really shine on this one. I've been listening to it non-stop and each time I find something new to admire. This tribute would make Coward proud. Neil Tennant has pulled together all the elements and has helped produce a memorable CD.
a good place to begin for younger listeners.......2000-01-13
As someone who was introduced to noel coward by the pet shop boys, ("if love were all"), I think this is a great album and can only help to introduce more people, previously unaware or unfamiliar with coward, to his work. if we only listened to the snobs, coward's music would be dead, as would classical and opera, all of which i listen to and was introduced to by the more "popular" artists. How do the music snobs know that this cd would kill an already dead noel coward? Maybe he'd be thrilled with it! The best songs on the album are the beautiful "Sail Away" by the event's organisers, the Pet Shop Boys; "There are Bad Times Just Around the Corner," by Robbie Williams, and Divine Comedy's "Marvelous Party," which reminded me a little of Underworld's "Born Slippy." The worst performance has to be the one phoned in by Sting. Elton John's cut was a bit disappointing as well. But all in all, it was a delightful collection.
COOL BRITANNIA.......2000-01-08
Icons need violence done to them occasionally, just to wake 'em up. I never was a great Coward fan (too glib, too slight, too precious) but something interesting happens upon repeated listening to these songs: those traditionally rendered remain sweet little time capsules, while the wild ones come right up to date! Vic Reeves and The Divine Comedy are particularly good. Who are these people?
We should have learned from Red Hot and Blue.......2000-01-05
This CD would have sent Mr. Coward to the grave, or at least to court for character assasination. Some songs are very well done. Sting, Paul McCartney and Maryanne Faithful are delightful. Texas is tolerable. Robbie Williams, Suede/Raissa, and Vic Reeves are not. The Divine Comedy is neither.
The good songs are good. The bad ones are so bad that they are not worth listening to get to the next good one.
This compilation makes me think of Picasso repainting the Sistine Chapel. A great artist in his own right, but most definitely not cut for that particular job.

Album Description
One of the most important issues of the '90s, this set of recordings, features the King of the Texas Blues Trombone in his final effort, recorded at the 1963 Monterey Jazz Festival a mere three and a half months before his untimly death at age 58. He is heard in the loving company of his mother and sister Norma, both of whom lend their hands to the keyboard and provide the listener with more than one highlight during the afternoon set, and brother Charlie, who leads both sets with sterling trumpet performances. Also in abundance are two legends from Teagarden's past: Pee Wee Russell, who first met Jack when he joined Peck Kelly's Bad Boys in Houston, 1924 and Joe Sullivan, who emigrated to New York from Chicago about the same time Jack arrived from the South. Together they made some of the greatest jazz records of the 1920s. In their own inimitable manner, Jack and Charlie introduce every performance with personal anecdotes and nostalgic recollections that you will enjoy almost as musch as hearing their music. Joining the group for one full-of-surprises set is modern jazz's great baritone sax star, Gerry Mulligan, who performed with his own group at the festival that year, but who wasn't about to pass up an opportunity to appear with the masters of an earlier era.
Customer Reviews:
Intros detract.......2000-08-19
This is great album of a live performance at the Monterey Jazz Festival in 1963. It features Pee Wee Russell, Joe Sullivan, and Gerry Mulligan. And Jack's mother makes an appearance, playing good ragtime piano.
Overall, it's a wonderful collection of songs with that special magic of being live. The only detraction is the long introductions to each song by Jack. Historical value can be placed on these, and they're interesting the first couple of times through, but overall they detract from the album for me.
His last and finest recording..........2000-06-17
Teagarden croons and plays on this joyful live set, which would be his last recording, Mama Teagarden is featured doing some great ragtime piano, and Teagarden's voice and playing are joy tohear, this CD proves Teagarden went out on top.

Customer Reviews:
Mad about Noel.......2001-08-30
I bought this CD as a novelty item, but ended up loving practically every song. The Pet Shop Boys 'Sail Away' is a great (albeit unusual) rendition that modernized the song and captures a bit of Coward's persona.
Sting, Paul McCartney, Marianne Faithful, and Elton John do a good job with more traditional versions of NC's work, and there are some fun dance mixes too.
Loved it!.......1998-09-29
If you like the songs of Noel Coward you will love this CD. They have been updated but still maintain their period quality. Such artist as Paul McCartney, Elton John, Bryan Ferry, Pet Shop Boys, etc. Marianne Faithfull's rendering of Mad About The Boy is outstanding.
