5 out of 5 stars how can you not like him?.......2007-07-06

i first heard mc chris on sealab 2021 on the bebop cola episode. they play fettes vette during the credits and after seeing George Lowe getting down to that song and then rubbing his nipples while licking his lips i KNEW i had to get his music. every song is awesome. he changes it up alot and really keeps you interested. i cant imagine that anyone who likes hip-hop, rap, and/or anything to do with star wars and the like would NOT like his music. he truly is one of a kind and i cant get enough of him. i hope he keeps putting out more stuff. i look forward to it.

4 out of 5 stars "Hijack the mic, it's not like anyone can stop me.".......2007-06-26

I didn't really think much about the guy voicing MC Pee Pants and Hesh on Aqua Teen Hunger Force and Sealab 2021 for a while. He was funny, and was capable of rapping, but I wasn't paying much attention. That changed when I watched him perform for After Hours at Gamespot last year. I then downloaded the EP he has for free on his website, Life's a Bitch and I'm Her Pimp. The songs were catchy with good beats, he really can rap, and the skits were funny. It wasn't until he announced he was ceasing sale of his albums on his website that I actually decided to get ahold of his other work before it was too late.

His next album was a little longer, still only eight tracks but only three skits instead of four. It starts out strong with "Ten Year Old", with nice bass and funny self-promoting lyrics about how he's great despite his ultra-high voice. "Cookie Breath" is a little cuter and poppier, and it's a nice love song that doesn't take itself too seriously. He performed "Hijack" (poorly, by his own admission) on G4's Attack of the Show, and it's a really good song, another one about himself. "White Kids Love Hip Hop" and "Geek" are both humorous, entertaining tracks making fun of his own white boy culture. My version of Knowing doesn't have the older version of "White Kids" featuring Andy Merrill, known for playing Brak on Adult Swim shows, but you can probably find it if you look. The three skits are about a nerd's revenge on a bully, and they're well acted and written, not to mention hilarious. You might have some trouble finding a copy, but if you don't, Chris himself has said that he's okay with his fans sharing his old music as he moves on in his life with increasing success.

Love Dreams by that master of funk Gary Wilson.....

Soul Traveling on volume two by Gary buzzes the breeze!!!!!!!!!

5 out of 5 stars Nothing Like This.......2007-01-22

Descriptors of the tracks from these artists:
Oh No - a cool breeze with a phat beat; reminiscing
Guilty Simpson - tough; regarding the daily struggle
Madlib - groovy; scratchy mcscratch; can you say "layed back, but biting, battle rap?"
Koushik - tranceish; far more rhythmic than trance and I like it
J Dilla (RIP) - this song makes me feel that music is my life and J Dilla is the sensei on my path to enlightenment of music
James Pants - crazy and I like it; "clap your hands, stomp your feet"; catchy
MadVillain - as usual MadVillain is mysterious, poetic, Doomish, Libish (I just made those words up for this review)
Georgia Anne Muldrow - simply a joy; couldn't have been titled better
MED - no more reminiscing, we're in the here and now; what does it take to be a quality rapper, let's find out
Dudley Perkins - Dudley is the most unique vocal artist of our day; a little of all the classic singers r&b and soul and of course a dash of contemporary street knowledge and reverence
Percee P, Quasimoto - Lord Quas goes with anyone, but Percee compliments his vocal most; heart of the battle
Jaylib - i think this and the first Dilla track stand out as the most transcendent on the album; i hear the sirens and I love it
J-Rocc - who wants drama? not me; i feel like i'm on a car chase with this track; can't tell if i'm following or leading?
Roc "C" - i've always had a special place in my heart for perseverance songs; these are the steps and the trip ups that make life worth living
Gary Wilson - bicca-ch bicca-ch; 70's groove at it's finest; great song to ufck to ;)
Pure Essence - the mothership has not left the building; very cosmic; these tracks are titled well
Aloe Blacc - very African rhythms; what direction will we take next?
Baron Zen - Peanut Butter Wolf can take any genre and make it his own; droning lyrics; works with the track
Young Jazz Rebels - so glad to have these eclectic tracks on an [adult swim] album;that Stones Throw is linked to artists like this is amazing; soft and emotional drumming; seemingly a drum circle and flute

3 out of 5 stars It's a compilation--you gotta take the good with the bad.......2007-01-04

The last third of 'Chrome Children' leaves a bit to be desired, but c'mon. It's a compilation--you gotta take the good with the bad and search out the gems.

Far as I'm concerned, there are plenty of those here, from Oh No's frantic-elevator-music 'Oh Zone' to Madlib's woozy-nasal 'Take It Back,' where J. Dilla crafts a beat that could easily have been an outtake from the latest Quasimoto album. Koushik's 'None in Mind' has a nice Bollywood/Blaxploitation vibe, and James Pants' 'Do a Couple of Things' just goes the straight blaxploitation route.

Roc C puts down a few solid verses on the Oh No-produced 'Movin,' MED does the same over Madlib's 'All I Know,' and 'Monkey Suite' should have just about everyone salivating for the next Madvillain album.

I'm not sure what the last few songs are all about, though. I mean, they're alright, but I'm not sure why they're on this record. They don't really fit with the first 14 songs. But oh well. I'll take 'em.

The true appeal of this for me was the companion DVD, which features performances at a Stones Throw show in Texas from MED, Percee P, Madlib and MF Doom. Doom's performance of 'Rhymes Like Dimes' alone is worth the price of admission.

And, of course, Guilty Simpson's 'Clap Your Hands,' on the CD, has the best one-liner I've heard in a while: 'I don't care who y'all rollin' with/'Cause a real ***** don't need sponsorship.'

4 out of 5 stars "I'm lit like a Branch Davidian, or what's left of the lithium in Cobain's Cranium".......2007-06-26

Eating's Not Cheating is easily Chris' most distinct and unique work. His other albums are known for tons of geeky pop culture references and funny skits to break up the songs. Eating's contains few of the former and none of the latter. Instead of songs about Star Wars and stuff like that, it focuses more on his thoughts about drugs and girls. It's easily the least nerdy thing he's done and from a standpoint of pure rap prowess, it's probably his best album. It's filled with great beats and very strong lyrics. Whether you actually like it the most depends on what exactly you like about him, just quality rap or that along with the dorkiness he's known for.

I got the reissue, which has three extra songs and two remixes. "MC Chris Owns" starts off strong with an awesome sound to it, and is followed by easily the silliest song on the album. "Illy Oi" is the first new track, and it's got a nice beat and fun chorus. "Tractorbeam" is probably my favorite, with great, very descriptive lyrics and a nice sound. The record continues along on with a good groove. The songs are maybe a bit more same-y than on his other works, but it's all consistently at least pretty good. "Care Bear" is a little different, with the only backing to Chris' rap being his own beatboxing. "Boys Don't Cry" is one of those sweeter songs he does sometimes, and I like it a lot, though I might like it more if the chorus didn't include the line "I'm jonesin' harder than Gollum." It would be fine elsewhere, but it doesn't really fit the mood. The album ends with "My Name Is", which is a prime example of Chris' penchant for telling us what his name is as often as it fits the song. One of his better lines from earlier is "My self-aggrandizing and deprecation keeps 'em guessing", and it's pretty true. MC has plenty of songs both praising his own prowess and others where he doesn't give himself a break. Whatever he really thinks, he's definitely good at making fun music.

4 out of 5 stars Not a perfect rap album, but's really enjoyable........2006-02-02

Okay, this is not meant to be an incredible, mind-blowing experience like the Marshall Mathers LP or the Wu-Tang Clan. Pick your favourite of the great rap artists. mc chris is not it. So why listen to this CD?

Because it's fun. There are few things more enjoyable than listening to rap with good rhymes, obscure phrases, and an incredible flow (yes, mc chris can do all of those with the best of them). If you don't believe me, Google him. Go to his website, and download his first album for free (that's what I did to get into him). His song off of that album "Fett's Vette" is among the wittiest and best rap songs I can think of.

mc chris is an independent rapper (not a rap artist, he's more of just a rapper). His rap style is rather like a faster version of the Licensed to Ill Beastie Boys - immature, infantile, and rather nerdy. Of course he's nerdy, he's part of the nerdcore rap movement. But he moves out of being a simple flash-in-the-pan nerd riding a movement. Especially in this album.

For being independent, this album is well produced. Rap music can take incredibly high production values sometimes. Instead, we have on this a lot of synthesizers, a lot of good beats, and a lot of work put into an album for probably a small fraction of the usual cost of a rap album. It is like 90% of the taste for 1% of the calories.

mc chris ignores the seriousness that rap artists have tried to establish. And it shows. This can easily hurt most artists, and damage the message that they try to give you. Fortunately, mc chris is not most artists, and he doesn't have a message.

4 out of 5 stars Not his best, but still better than the rest..........2005-09-07

You might know MC Chris (Chris Ward) better as MC Pee Pants, Sir Loin, or Little Brittle on [adult swim]'s Aqua Teen Hungerforce and Hesh on Sealab 2021. This album features 14 tracks (all music, no skits on this one) of white bread nerdy hip-hop. While that might not sound appealing to you're average hip-hop fan, for those of us who love hip-hop's infectious sound yet can't identify with the lyrics, this is the perfect solution. Especially if like me you're early years were spent sleeping on Lando Calrusian's face (empire bed sheets) while deciding what alignment your warrior should be (chaotic-nuetral). That's not to say traditional hip-hop fans won't find this album entertaining. This music crosses boundries.

The rhymes are old school and fit well with Chris' high pitched voice. He flows very well and the rhymes never sound forced. DJ John (John Fewell), the person responsible for the beats, does an excellent job at providing a background that's varied and well put together. Elements of drum and bass, break beat, and even punk (with the misfits bass line on Evergreen) find their way onto this album.

(...)

If you find yourself to be a fan then check out this album. It's extremely good. Also check local listings to catch the man on tour. Absolutely awesome shows. Only reason it's four stars instead of five is because I don't think this is his best album. Like the title says though, it's better than 99% of the stuff that's played on the radio nowadays. Pick it up.

5 out of 5 stars Forgive the cheesy title, but a star is re-born once again........2007-07-09

In 1954, Judy Garland gave the most acclaimed performance of her career as a musical movie star in George Cukor's musical remake of the 1937 straight-up drama A Star Is Born. After its premiere, the film was heavily edited and would not be seen in its near complete form again for nearly thirty years. Judy was nominated for an Academy Award for her performance, but lost to Grace Kelly, to the chagrin of many Garland fans to this day, as well as many celebrities of the day. (Groucho Mark famously called it the biggest robbery since Brinks.)

In all that mess, the soundtrack was released by Columbia on vinyl record in mono and has since never been out of print and was a best-seller for years. In 1988, Columbia took the musical numbers and the overture directly from the film's stereo soundtrack (As, sadly, stereo soundtrack masters no longer existed.) and released those onto CD. The sound quality was somewhat horrendous, but digital audio was still in its infancy and not much else could be done.

In 2004, for the film's 50th anniversary, Columbia, Legacy, and Sony Music Soundtrax released this incredible new expanded remastered CD reissue of the film's soundtrack. This is the most complete soundtrack you can find and it's definitely worth upgrading from your 1988 CD release.

This CD contains not only all of the songs, including an extended intro to The Man That Got Away which was shortened in the film as well as the complete intro to Gotta Have Me Go With You, but also contains a near complete release of the instrumental score, which includes whole tracks and parts of tracks that were not used in the film, as well as an alternate vocal take of It's A New World, the deleted When My Sugar Walks Down The Street segment from Born In A Trunk, and a static-y complete version of The Trinidad Coconut Oil Shampoo Commercial, which was taken from a worn acetate playback disc - the only complete recording in existence.

The soundtrack is taken from a mixing and matching of several elements, such as acetate playback discs, the original Columbia mono soundtrack album masters, and the film's 4-track stereo soundtrack, among others. This means that the soundtrack goes back and forth from being stereo and mono. However, this does not detract from my listening experience any, and frankly, I can't tell much of a difference. One interesting note is that Gotta Have Me Go With You uses both the film's soundtrack and the mono soundtrack album masters to create a faithful listening experience, from the mono instrumental intro to the song itself, which except for a short portion, is taken from the film's 4-channel soundtrack. (The mono portion of the vocal part was used to edit out some plot-related screams that were present in the 1988 release. This method of retaining the aural integrity of Gotta Have Me Go With You was also used when it was included on the Rhino Records compilation Judy Garland In Hollywood: Her Greatest Movie Hits.)

Despite the fact that this soundtrack is taken from several different surviving elements and sadly not from a single set of elements, as Warner Bros. didn't have the foresight to save everything like MGM and Disney did, this is an excellent presentation of this landmark soundtrack. The sound quality for the most part is excellent, and the liner notes are also wonderful. Garland historian John Fricke writes a small essay on the production of the film and an annotated guide to the soundtrack, which gives a synopsis of the plot and also indicates where the tracks from the CD appear in the film. Producer Didier C. Deutsch also writes a small essay on the creation of this CD release, giving notes on the elements and some specific tracks.

Amazon is offering this soundtrack at an excellent price, and I have to say, it's a bargain for a soundtrack of this caliber and sound quality. Any Garland fan or movie soundtrack fan should have this in their collection.

5 out of 5 stars A Star Is Born Soundtrack Review.......2007-01-10

A really excellent soundtrack to go with an excellent movie. This is some of Judy Garland's best material in both music and acting. The power of her voice on "The Man That Got Away" is amazing. "Born In A Trunk", "It's A New World", "Someone At Last" and "Lose That Long Face" are other recommended tracks. This is a MUST HAVE for all you Judy Garland fans.

5 out of 5 stars Judy at her peak!.......2006-05-30

Judy Garland's finest film work was "A Star Is Born." Because she and her husband, Sid Luft, were also the producers, it was the most intensely involving production she had ever undertaken. The laser focus of her brilliant talent was never before realized on film to this degree. Also, she had gained tremendous personal confidence due to the unprecedented audience response to the concerts she had done between her MGM films and ASIB. The love with which the live audience embraced her, brought new heights to her acting as well.
The production values of the film were top of the line and it shows on this fine CD. It's a chance to experience Judy's talent on a more intimate basis without the visuals.
A must-have for every serious Garland collector.

5 out of 5 stars a "Star" shines like never before..........2005-04-27

This reissued remaster of A STAR IS BORN is a must-own for fans of the movie, and in particular those who were somewhat dissatified by the previous CD edition (CK 44389). That edition was great for offering us most of the main numbers in stereo/mono mix but was marred by poor analogue distortion and other remastering problems (though this was the best that could have been done at the time). This new edition (CK 65965) presents the entire score, including background and incidental sections as well as the cut material, in a sparkling new package.

The big bonus for getting this latest edition is for Garland's complete rendition of "The Trinidad Coconut Oil Shampoo Commercial" (without the dialogue of James Mason). This has been taken from a rare acetate master, so while the sound quality is not the best, having the number complete without interrupting dialogue is a more than ample compensation. You will notice too that "Lose That Long Face" has been newly mastered from a better stereo source (cutting out the thunder-crashes that were heard on the first CD master, and Garland's singing no longer has those violent analogue fluctuations during the introduction). "Gotta Have Me Go with You" is now presented without the screams and noises, in a new master from the mono soundtrack.

"When My Baby Walks Down the Street", a section cut from the "Born in a Trunk" sequence, has been added as a bonus track. This sparkling-new STAR IS BORN reissue is a great tribute to what is most definitely Judy Garland's greatest hour on film.

5 out of 5 stars Musical perfection of the highest magnitude!!!.......2005-02-25

Was there ever a more perfect voice than the one possessed by Judy Garland? Powerful yet gentle. Dynamic yet restrained. Bone-chilling yet soothing. She had the pipes!

And her instrument was showcased at its best in the music from her triumphant "A Star is Born".

This expanded version is a bona-fide treasure with the highlight being Garland's earth-shattering "The Man That Got Away," presented with vocals and several instrumental versions. Along with "Somewhere Over the Rainbow," "Have Yourself a Merry Little Christmas," and "The Trolley Song", "The Man That Got Away" is an essential for Garland fans, as well as those that know a good song when they hear it.

The fifteen-minute medley that was featured in the film as the "introduction" of "Vicki" to the public is another outstanding track, featuring "Born in a Trunk", "Suwanee," and "My Melancholy Baby," all exquisitely performed by the legendary talent.

Clocking in at just under eighty minutes, the soundtrack to the classic film is, indeed, in a class by itself, and deserving of repeated listening, maintaining its "freshness" after more than five decades.

I first heard this album at a listening station in a local music store and immediately bought it, becoming a Toni Price fan on the spot. "Richest One" will break your heart (mine's still busted) and the rest will make you laugh and dance. I visited Austin a few months back and the top item on my list to do was catch a Toni Price show--which I did, on her birthday, and it was mighty fine.

5 out of 5 stars i was so in love with these songs when i was a kid..........2006-01-31

i used to know all the words to all the songs on this album... then myh tape got eaten and i've been looking for it ever since.

5 out of 5 stars Best in Person.......2002-02-25

Toni Price has been playing to packed houses at the Continental Club in Austin,Texas for years. If you've never heard her, you should. It may not match getting to see her in person in a smoke filled bar where the crowd stands to watch her and offers to buy her drinks, but if it's the closest you can get to it, it's worth it. Buy this album.

5 out of 5 stars Sultry Texas Blues/Rock/Songster.......2001-05-12

You ought to buy this CD. Classic Texas blues/folk/rock sound. Great players from the Austin scene, excellent songwriting, excellent production, and Toni KILLS! This is the real thing.

5 out of 5 stars The great discovery of the 1990's.......2000-01-09

The voice , the songs, the guest musicians-- this debut is spectacular. When you hear Toni sing you'll be a fan for life.

The Waifs--sisters Donna and Vikki Simpson and Josh Cunningham--honed their craft playing countless gigs throughout the 1990s in their native Australia. Sink or Swim is their third album, and it features 11 selections of acoustic, and occasionally electric-guitar-driven, pop-folk. The songs include Cunningham's "Brief History," a song that's half Woody Guthrie-style talking blues and half rap, which tells the story of the band; Donna's "Haircut," a song about a breakup that blends anger and fierce joy in equal measure; and Vikki's "Danger," an enigmatic song of loss. The band's vocal harmonies are tight, and the arrangements feature plenty of strummed and finger-picked guitars, with a bit of banjo here and dab of cello there to fill out the sound. The three members of the Waifs know how to compose a catchy hook and write a lyric that touches both heart and mind, and have enough instrumental chops to deliver the goods. And really, what more do need from a band? --Michael Simmons

5 out of 5 stars Great folk/alt/pop from down under!.......2007-01-12

The Waifs' latest offering "Sink or Swim" an extremely well written, diverse collection of acoustic-based songs from a great Australian band. Both the vocal and instrumental arrangement are tight and tasteful, resulting in a very listenable CD. Starting out with "The Waitress", a catchy little ditty that can't help but make you smile, followed by the cynical "Lies" that has definite celtic influences, nearly the entire CD is simply a joy to listen to. "Danger" has an early Indigo Girls feel without all the social scolding crap that they devolved into. "Without You" is a nice piece of pop craft that aims towards a top 40 audience. "The Haircut" is an introspective song with some hilarious lyrics (the masturbation references would normally be out of place, but these are actually cute without being vulgar). "Love Serenade" is a happy love song reminiscent of Nora Jones' "Little Willies" style. You can almost hear them smile while their singing it. "Taken" is a little uneven, but the instrumental hook during the verses is very infectious. "Service Fee" is a melancholy ballad about a lost love that is both pretty and poignant. "A Brief History", a spoken track, is probably the low point of the CD. Although the backing instrumental track is adequate, the song just seems out of place on an otherwise wonderful CD. "When I Die" is a sweet country ballad about the pull we all feel to return to our roots, like salmon, as our ends approach. This song should be covered by every Americana group out there. Finally, the CD's title track is a delightful gospel-tinged piece of coutry blues that would have been at home on Jorma Kaukonen's Blue Country Heart CD. This CD is my first exposure to the Waifs, and I plan to get my hands on some more. Simply a great pop-folk album with a lot of diversity and great musicianship. Buy it NOW!

      5 out of 5 stars The Waifs.......2006-08-27

I got into this band through Xavier Rudd's Triple J radio block hour mixed tape gig show thing. Anyway...they've been out for quite a while so Im definetly not laying any sort of ground work for them. Point is their good, really good. Their fame down under is pretty large but I think their pretty unknown here in the states. Which is too bad, because they definetly have talent. Not just talent but some serouisly skill.

      5 out of 5 stars Thanks MTV.......2005-12-05

the only good thing MTV has done in the last fifteen years was play a slice of London Still on some douchey show of theirs. I got to hear this band and have been with em ever since. Great album and a good follow up to up all night.

      5 out of 5 stars great cd.......2005-10-25

first heard this cd driving down the west coast of oz, its great to drive to and and i think goes great with any ozz road trip!

      5 out of 5 stars A hidden treasure.......2004-02-27

This is a brilliant recording through and through. For their youth, these three write remarkably mature lyrics, and the music is consistently excellent. Someone wrote below that the CD is front-loaded, and I couldn't disagree more. Musically, nearly every song is just perfect, though "Danger" is perhaps a little bland, and lyrically there are deeply moving high points from that front end (Haircut) well into the second half (e.g. the gut-wrenching "Service Fee"). There are elements of folk, rock, jazz, country and more here. I'm not sure it fits a genre, but this is very real, fresh music. Someone below criticized the songwriting by Josh Cunningham, and I think that was a bit off-base. He can get right to the heart of the matter about feelings about home (When I Die), and can write great music even when his lyrics are a bit pedantic (Lies) or sentimental (Brief History, on which he and the band sound like a reincarnated acoustic Velvet Underground). This is just a great listen. I may not have a lot to add to what's below, but this is one of the best CD's I've heard in the last year, and wanted to chime in with another good review. It's a great listen; you won't be disappointed.

5 out of 5 stars And then there was waterdeep..........2000-08-02

Innovative, heart-wrenching music--the kind of melodies that sleek through your skin and wrap around your bones--paired with voices that belt out a heart's cry and lyrics that take off shoes in deepest darknesses with the wide-eyed awareness of God's nearness there. I believe that Waterdeep is doing something that Jesus does, and that "Christian Culture" rarely does--reach into the masses, with truth *and* mercy; explore the rawness there, and the beauty. They know about how their faith surrounds blood and sacrifice, and one who was not afraid of our worlds' sickness. The result? They can sing about death, the world's craziness, men leaving their wives for bimbos, God speaking in bathrooms next to the condom machine, how everyone "seems basically fine" and yet they "cling to what's dead, instead of what's alive." Artists, writers, *anyone* engaging in the world should listen to their music as a lesson in how to explore the lengths and depths of Christ's love in *today's* world (and not in the fanciful, utopian dream of medieval Christianity come lately--my tendency, and many of ours, I think). Those in need of a new glimpse of grace should listen simply to know the One who loves them once again. There have been times when I had to stop their CDs because what the music did to me was too fast and furious for my soul to handle all at once....

      5 out of 5 stars Heartwarming.......2000-06-28

This cd is great, a very nice way to warm the heart. Very touching lyrics, with great harmonies and sweet guitar. If you like this CD check out Don Chaffer's origional cd on Amazon. Its all acoustic and really good too. Type Don Chaffer and it'll bring it up.

5 out of 5 stars One of the best I own.... Awesome band, awesome music.......2005-12-28

This is an incredible group. All of the songs are written by the lead singer, Joe Hedges. He is one of the deepest, most honest song-writers there are. One thing I hate is when songwriters write songs that express emotions that they don't even experience (like Metallica... no offense, metallica fans). Seriously, you could pick any song on this album and it could be a number one single. I echoe the beginning line of a Ben Folds Five DVD, "If you've heard these guys, you're a fan. If you haven't, you're about to be." They have more CD's, but their label MCA went under and so did they. They're awaiting a new record deal right now. Go to http://www.julyforkings.com. They have a new CD that's REALLY good called Nostalgia. This album is called "Swim" because they changed their name from Swim to July For Kings because there were lots of other bands in the US that carried the same name, Swim.

      Here's the song reviews
Intro/Believe 4/5 - Great kickoff to an awesome CD. They recorded a version of it on one of their independent releases that sounded better during some parts.

Normal Life 5/5!!!!!! - wow.... WOW WOW WOW!!!!!! This is one of the best songs ever. If I made a soundtrack to my life, this would be the first track. Apart from the unbelievable catchy music, the lyrics capture everything about the human soul's desire to just have a comfortable life. Sounds like it could be a cheesy song, but IT IS NOT. Look into this one first.

Girlfriend 4/5 - The older recording was MUCH better. Still a great song, but there used to be a really cool little guitar riff in the background that they took out on this album that made me love this song

Bed of Ashes 5/5 - One of their most aggressive songs ever. Great recording, tight riffs, awesome vocals, definitely worth a listen

Champagne - 5/5 - Really catchy love song. Creative guitar riffs and honest lyrics

New Black Car - 5/5 - About Joe's girlfriend getting a new black Jetta. Neat song! "Are you listenin' to the radio? Are you driving down the city road? Are you alone in your new black car?"

Start Again - 3/5 - eh... Most people love this one, it wasn't my favorite one on the album though. It kind of sounds awkward to me when Joe drops f-bombs. I thought it sounded too much like "Hey Man Nice Shot" by Filter. Other than that, great aggressive track.

Without Wings - 4/5 - AWESOME chorus. nuff said

Meteor Flower - 5/5!!!!!!!!! Oh my freaking holy crapness!!! Right up there with Normal Life. This was a girlfriend and I's song the whole time we were together. Beautiful, catchy, honest, inspiring, I LOVE THIS FREAKING SONG!!!! I don't usually like the mushy stuff like this but this is one of my favorite songs of my entire life. SERIOUSLY - listen to this one!!!!

And Gommorah - 5/5 Once again, I think the old recording is better on this one. The new version on this album kind of tries to hard to be radio-worthy. It's about an old high-school girlfriend that cheated on Joe and it really catches the turmoil he was going through.

Anything But Beautiful - 4/5 This one belongs more towards the beginning of this CD, I think. It's a re-recording from the independent version. Pretty cool song. Not a whole lot else to say about it.

Washed Away - 5 OUT OF FREAKING 5 - Probably the most emotional song on the album. Joe's dad died when he was younger and this song was written when he was 18 or 19 (I think). It's about all the pain and sorrow that he felt and how much he misses his dad. It's kind of hard to understand it that way when you listen to the song, unless you know the back story. I'll admit I got pretty misty-eyed when I heard this the first time. He almost never plays it live because it's pretty hard for him to get through.

      3 out of 5 stars yech.......2005-08-22

This one only gets 3 stars because the single Normal Life is a fantastic song. The rest.....garbage. If you wanna check these guys out just buy the cd single or Normal Life and save urself some bucks.

      5 out of 5 stars Great CD.......2005-02-10

This is one of the best CD's I've heard in a while. Hopefully, the group will get a major record deal (they deserve it). Read the other reviews for specifics.

      4 out of 5 stars A Good Listen.......2005-02-01

While a few of the songs on this cd are forgettable, July For Kings has fashioned quite an impressive disc, complete with heavy crashing guitars but also soft and flowing melodies. If there's anything to be said about July For Kings, it's that they don't get the credit they deserve. Bluntly, their songwriting is very good. They sound very similar at times to bands such as Stone Temple Pilots and heavy Matchbox 20 stuff, and to a lesser degree, Everclear, Alice in Chains and (regrettably) Creed. That being said, had this album been released in the hey-day of the mid-90s "grunge" era, these guys would undoubtedly be internationally known. But, as it is, they keep a relatively low-key profile by touring heavily in small bars and clubs. They put on a great show if you ever get a chance to see them.

      5 out of 5 stars ..........2005-01-21
