4 out of 5 stars great album.......2004-03-07

big shock to most that all thest guys are god fearing xians, however this isn't your grandma's xian music, this cd, and these bands was my introduction to a musical genre that i've fallen in love with, and even though i'm not a xian and don't care much for they're morals, i love this cd and most of the artists i listen to all the time. this is an album you can throw on in the pressance of ANY metal head and be like "so yea it's xian metal" and unless they've heard of the band you'll have to show them liner notes, this album rocks hard, if you like metal than pick it up!

5 out of 5 stars Great Mix.......2003-10-22

5 out of 5 stars Great compilation.......2002-07-12

This is one of the best Solid State compilations. Mostly becuase of Living Sacrifice and Zao, and of course Blindside. Great CD to buy when looking for a new metal artist

5 out of 5 stars Buy it........2000-05-17

This album introduced me to death metal, it absolutly blew my mind. This only the second of my 50 cds I'v given five stars. Top cuts from Extol, Zao, Living Sacrafice, Blindside, and Focal Point. If u like black metal, thrash metal, or just great death metal this album has it all. Only one of the 16 songs is boring (Training For Utopia) Buy it if u like heavy musik and u will not be dissapointed.

4 out of 5 stars This is Solid State Vol. 1.......2000-03-28

This is a great compiliation of the artist on the solid state records. It puts the power of harcore and heavier music right at your fingertips.

4 out of 5 stars Strong Debut!.......2005-05-09

Dead Poetic made its way onto the indie rock/emo scene with their 2002 debut Four Wall Blackmail which, at its best, is a solid blending of pop emo riffs with melodic hard rock sections, not quite hard enough to call it hardcore. Dead Poetic manage to hold onto a pop sensibility throughout the entire album while creating edgier sections that will have the hardcore kids swinging their fists("The Corporate Enthusiast") and beautiful atmospheric sections ("A Green Desire") that will have the emo kids holding each other.

Some of the songs sound like they could have been written by The Juliana Theory or at least exhibit a lot of influence from them. "Bliss Tearing Eyes", while an excellent song, sounds like it could be a cut from _Understand This is a Dream_. As an avid listener of music though, I understand that this is a debut album and the band is growing.

While the album has no major weaknesses, every song isn't up to the standards of the title track or "Tell Myself Goodbye", which blends the catchiness of radio rock with the classic screams of almost every band on the soildstate label.

If you're looking for a band that is creating completely original music, Dead Poetic aren't there yet. If you're looking for a band that does the simple things right, creates a sound using a tested method, and has their feet placed firmly on the ground when it comes to song construction, look no further.

Make sure you check out _New Medicines_, Dead Poetics follow-up which is a great album!

5 out of 5 stars i love it........2004-06-02

i started out just knowing the title track for this album. and i fell in love with it. i was in a slump and had discovered the dashboard and soco that wasnt all over the radio. i also stumbled apon Dead Poetic. i went to cornerstone in orlando this year and they were there. saw them live. and the rocked. truely. the lead singer has a passion that could not be outdone. and can still sing and scream. the entire energy for the band is also amazing.

if you are into this christian screamo buisness (like Dead Poetic) may i suggest Norma Jean (lots harder), Blindside (yes.. they are christian... and their pits are crazy),and Emery (more like DP only more screams...) that will turn you onto christian rock that isnt Third Day. Dont be afraid of the christian screamo and other rock that is emerging... it can still be "hardcore" believe me... i have the bruises to prove it!

biz.

3 out of 5 stars The beauty of screamo..........2004-02-10

When I first heard these guys, it was on "This is Solid State 4." My first impression was, simplistic and catchy. But I got the CD and the more I heard, the more I liked. Now, this is not an intricate album. Not a whole lot of flashy work. It's simple, solid, and punchy. It's simplistic, yet catchy. Brandon's vocals are what bring this CD to life. You might think of them as a young Embodyment. I for one really enjoyed the lyrics. They just hit home with me, since I'm an emokid. They speak of surrender to God (Bliss Tearing Eyes, A Green Desire), deep regret (Four Wall Blackmail, August Winterman), and last but never least, regret at losing a lover (Ollie Otson, Telling Myself Goodbye). This CD was produced by none other than the great Barry Pointner, so the sound is incredible. Good solid sound, with the vocal tracks very well done (I hear Thursday comparisons quite a bit, but Dead Poetic has much better-performed vocals in my opinion). I give it three stars because some songs could be stronger and less formulaic, and because hey, not everyone will like this CD. But if you like emo or scream stuff like Thursday, Finch, Embodyment, Lucerin Blue, then check it out.

5 out of 5 stars dead poetic.......2004-01-30

this is one awesome cd; i never even heard of these guys until the other day but they are awesome

5 out of 5 stars To Scream or Not to Scream..........2003-12-29

Wow we Wow Wow, This album is great. This band generates so much energy just from their cd. 4 Wall Black Mail is one of my Favorite albums of all time. If you're a fan of, Blindside, Project 86, Lucerin Blue, Thursday, Finch, A Static Lullaby, Glassjaw, and even At the Drive-in i would guarantee you'd like this band. I'd even go as far as saying if you were displeased with this album i'd refund your money..but.. HAHAHA. but since i know you'd like it i won't bother. peace and God bless

5 out of 5 stars Great album.......2006-07-04

First off, how many times are you closed-minded people going to make that stupid comment that Christianity and metal do not mix? At least these guys can actually talk about something other than blood and dying. They understand that there is more to life than dying. I am a Christian and Christians should be able to make any kind of music we want without having to hear ignorant people make dumb and irrational statements. Now, onto the album. Zao is the best metal band out, Christian or not. Liberate... is considered by some to be Zao's best album. This album and Where Blood and Fire Bring Rest (my personal favorite) seem to be the main two choices for all-time Zao favorites. The vocals from Dan (my favorite vocalist from the band) are just amazing and compliment the hard, heavy music very well. I heard this album is related to Dante's Divine Comedy. Savannah, The Ghost Psalm, and Skin Like Winter are the best tracks on here. Rock on Zao!

5 out of 5 stars A cd of magnificent force........2006-05-23

Man is this disc so good for the ears. I got this last year and haven't regretted getting it yet. Zao has crafted a masterpiece that is dark, brutal, and yet, beautiful. One thing I like about this cd is the lyrics. Dan is definitely one of the best lyric writers in metal today. Even though the lyrics have not much to do with the story, the give the music itself an even darker feal. I don't think this cd would be as good if the it didn't have these lyrics. The story though, is a modern version of the first five circles of hell from Dante's Divine Comedy. I also lve the music on this disk a lot. It's a mix of the dark atmosphere and music of Neurosis and then emerging metalcore. It also contains audio clips from the movie Event Horizon. If there is one complaint about this album that I have, it's the fact that it is only forty-two minutes. Oh well. It's still an excellent disc and a good buy. You won't regret it.

4 out of 5 stars Excellent.......2005-12-07

I've been a metal/hardcore fan for years but Zao was often hit or miss with me. I dunno what it was, perhaps the endless lineup changes(the current band has no original members), the inconsistency of the music maybe. I'm not a big fan of Christianity and religious-oriented aggressive music makes me uneasy, but I was not about to let my biases keep me from enjoying some good music. I picked up Where Blood and Fire Bring Rest and I thought that it started off very strong but got weakened toward the end. However, I love Liberate. It is brooding, uncompromising, dark and beautiful at the same time. Russ Cogdell and Scott Mellinger come up with some very creative and expressive riffs, and Dan sounds as vicious as ever. This is probably their finest moment

5 out of 5 stars Zao's soundtrack to hell.......2005-11-19

If the build-up three minute intro doesn't get you hooked, then the opening lines of: "In heaven, hell is only a word, but the reality is much much worse" will definately make you want to listen more. For every second of the intro track I was literally scared because every change in the music and added instrument was a sign that Zao's hardcore onslaught was coming closer. Sure, maybe Zao's trying to scare us into getting saved by making a soundtrack to hell... maybe though, this album is a lot more than that. When I say it's a soundtrack to hell, I really mean it. Zao is actually trying to create the atmosphere of Dante's inferno through audio.

Savannah, the first skull basher of the CD is easilly one of the best. Like most of the songs on here, it uses metaphoric/poetic lyrics to animate the circles of hell, as told in Dante's inferno. Sometimes this can get a little confusing though, especially if you aren't familiar with the subject. In my eyes though, it's not so much the lyrics as it is the music that creates the mood for this Record. The song ends up with a roaring vocal of "she was alive" accompanied by a demonic sounding guitar pick going along with the tempo of the scream. I was hooked fro that point on.

"Autopsy" is probably my favorite song on the CD. It's got great rythm, guitars, and melody. It may not be traditional hardcore as i like it, but somehow I still appreciate the song for what it is. I think this song is talking about the dead ones in the outermost circle who feel so close to heaven but yet they are still in hell.

As the CD moves on, we find more and more variation between styles. It can be said that bands like Zao have made the line between Metal and Hardcore even thinner than it already is. With albums like this one, that statement will only grow in truth. The influences from both genres are very well mixed here to create a recording like no other. I have always considered Zao a true hardcore band, but metal influences usually prevail in their material.

"If these scars could speak" is a sort of slower song that starts out acoustic but ends up being a very heavy one. It's almost reminiscent of early Norma jean, which is great.

Do you wanna make a deal, a deal with the devil? That's the opening spoken word to "Ghost Psalms" which is, you guessed it, another hardcore anthem. Although, "I am buried with their words" might be said a little too much throughout the song.

"desire the end" and "Dark Cloud sound" are both great tracks that could have been fillers but retain their fill, successfully coming off as Hardcore songs with a metal tempo. Once again we are seeing these two genres mix... How interesting.

"Skin like winter" is one of the most praised songs on the CD from what I've heard. The drums sound a lot like "Mewithoutyou" IMO but few listeners will make that comparison. In any case it's one of the best on the CD.

The CD ends with "Man in cage, jack wilson" which is a sensible build up song that lasts seven minutes. It's almost one with the intro with morbid atmosphere and drum beats that will make you pee your pants.

Zao employed a new vocalist for this album and he's awesome. The screams are great but the spoken words he does are just phenominal. I can't believe his range.

There will always be debate over if this is Zao's best album. Many argue that "when blood and fire bring rest" was heavier but I think LTEI more than makes up for heaviness in things like lyrics, technicality, and vocals. It's just a winning combo that can rarely be beat. Good job Zao!

5 out of 5 stars Pure Brutality.......2005-08-09

Zao is one of the hardest bands around, yet they have some of the coolest minor melodic sections. They have great intros, massive builds and chaotic noise to their songs. I can't and won't classify them at all. My favorite songs were The Ghost Psalm, Savannah, Skin Like Winter, and Autopsy

5 out of 5 stars This is a GREAT album!.......2005-03-28

This is one of my favorite hardcore CD's. Highly recommended for hardcore fans looking for "actual" hardcore. All of their albums are great. I can't wait to see SAS live. Big-ups to SAS representing SC. That's all that needs to be said.

5 out of 5 stars Longtime Favorite.......2004-03-26

This and Revolution Transimission are two of my all-time favorite CDs. Absolutely great music. Wish they still sounded like this on their latest CD, Engage. If you're new to SAS, this is the first CD you want to get. It's definately their best stuff. Revolution rocks too but this one just barely edges it out.

5 out of 5 stars ONE OF THE BEST.......2003-08-15

in my personal opinion this is one of the best hardcore albums ever made. it combines throaty "yell" (for lack of a better word) singing with "regular"singing. it is an emotional explosion of aggression and love all rolled into one. the music is just straight hardcore with a punkish tinge. buy it and love it!!

5 out of 5 stars Excellent!!!.......2003-04-17

This is a great hardcore punk album, from the amazing STRETCH ARM STRONG! Don't forget to check out there newer CD as well.

5 out of 5 stars RITUALS OF LIFE!!!.......2002-11-08

Stretch Arm Strong is so sweet! Through My Actions is an awesome song, and it is the worst song on this CD. (Not saying that it's a bad song, no it's a really awesome song, just not the best on the disc) You've gotta get this CD! That song makes this worth the money that you'll pay. Buy this CD NOW!!!

ive never heard of a band on tooth and nail selling out, but i liked this cd, its fun, this band inspired one of my favorite local bands

    4 out of 5 stars pretty great.......2005-08-24

if you like old school hardcore, this is the cd for you. SAS was one of the first great hardcore bands along with boysetsfire, and they have continued to keep their original sound (with some mature changes) into the 21st century. of course nothing can compare to seeing them live, but in the meantime there are no better substitutes than the cds.

5 out of 5 stars This is an excellent CD!.......2004-12-07

This one spent a lot of time in my CD player when I first got it over a year ago and is still a regular favorite. While not quite as good as Rituals of Life in my opinion, it is one of the best CDs of it's kind out there.

    1 out of 5 stars Sell Outs.......2004-01-02

I grew up in Columbia, SC. I know what Stretch was and what they are now. They sold out. They used to be incredible. When they got signed, their sound changed dramatically. I used to go see them when they played VFW's, Annie's, and other random Colatown spots with other great bands like In/Humanity. What happened to Stretch? I hope that the guys in the band read this. I also hope all of the former band members read this. Dreads... why did you sell out? Money is nice and all but don't you remember what you're all about? Keep Hope Alive.

5 out of 5 stars ''you were more than just a song''.......2003-12-14

it seems to me that stretch get better with every cd. this cd is great. the lyrics, vocals, everything is good about it. i had the privilege to see them last summer and it was rad. they closed with 'for the record' my personal favorite song. definitely pick this cd up. standout tracks: for the record and worst case scenario.

Though I've only known Stretch for a bit under 2 years now, when this CD came out I was eager to hear another CD that would become a constant resident of my CD player. It wasn't. Some might describe the new direction by saying it sounds like they've sold out. I don't like to think that Stretch would ever sell out but they definately need to do something to get the passion from their first albums back into their music. I will still give this disc a listen every now and then but I almost wish I'd downloaded it instead of payed for it. So disappointing. If you want good SAS, try Rituals of Life or Revolution Transmission.

5 out of 5 stars BETTER THAN BLINK!.......2003-11-06

AYo! I've gheard of these guys for years and I finally caught there show in New York! Theyse guys are a perfect blend of Punk and Hard Core. Music with a message to the lost kids of today and it's truly moving to anyone with a doubt or question about their very own exsist-ense!

    3 out of 5 stars it's already been done.......2003-09-04

I was expecting this cd to be awful based on the reviews that are already out there by big sites. However, it's not THAT bad. Engage is just another SAS album that sounds pretty much the same as their previous releases. This one has quite a few guest vocal spots though. Compared to their previous releases, this one is more straightforward hardcore. There are a few mellow punk sounding spots. This is pretty similar to Revolution Transmission, but not nearly as good. If you are a Stretch fan, buy it because it really isn't that bad. I will complain about them recycling Express Yourself. I hate it when bands put songs from a compilation cd on their own cd. It makes you wonder why you bought the compilation. The version on Too Legit for the Pit is much better than the album version(same thing with throwdown's Baby Got Back). Overall, I will call this a mediocre release. SAS hasn't really evolved musically. However, it seems the hardcore kids get mad when somebody tries to change based on how mad they got about the latest Poison the Well release anyway. This is the first album in the past year from Solid State that is actually less than perfect.
