"Totally Gnarly" or "Gag me with a Spoon"?.......2007-05-31
Fond nostalgia aside, the whole 'retro' thing is forcing the 80's upon us once again and you might as well admit that you were one of the characters from The Breakfast Club! (Mmmmmm....Ally Sheedy.)
Dropping these discs into my player and hitting shuffle just makes it all come flooding back!
But to tell a shameful truth? I really HAD to buy this set because of "Pac-Man Fever" by Buckner and Garcia and "Sweetheart" by Franke & the Knockouts. I've never seen these songs anywhere else!
I'm not sure I even looked at the other songs before my credit card was being swiped by the good folks at Amazon!!
So, yeah, again, I bought on impulse but I damn sure don't regret it!! In fact, I'd suggest we embrace the "ME, ME, ME" decade just once more and "BUY, BUY, BUY" this set.
If you went to high school in the 80's like I did, simply put, this will bring back some great memories.
(Unless, of course, your high school years sucked. To which, I say, "That's too bad. I'm sorry for you.")
Either way, just admit that the 80's were a great time for music and pastel suits and thin leather ties.........(chicks dig the thin tie still, right? Right? Anybody? Can I get a witness?)
Where's Don Johnson when I need him?
Oh, here he is....Disc 6, Song 19!

this set. The 80s were my high school and college years and I was
certainly guilty of listening to the radio .... This set is awesome and
is really made indispensable with the booklet. My only gripe lies with
the artists that were huge in the 80s, but evidently could not be licensed
for this set....Notably U2, REM, Hoodoo Gurus, Wall of Voodoo, etc
Shut up!.......2007-03-04

When this material originally resurfaced in an earlier Rhino-celebrates-the-'70s program, many rock scribes contorted themselves into revisionist pretzels: this isn't so bad, they argued--none too convincingly. There'll be none of that here: much of the music on this colossal box set is godawful. The world doesn't miss the likes of Sammy ("Chevy Van") Johns and Sammy ("Candy Man") Davis. Or at least it doesn't miss the records they cut during the decade of disaster flicks and Jonathan Livingston Seagull. That said, this elaborate box is something to behold. The lovingly compiled 92-page booklet provides background on the ridiculous (David Soul, C.W. McCall, Carl Douglas) and the sublime (Parliament, James Brown, the Staple Singers), and the music swings on the same pendulum, with Harry Chapin, Bill Withers, and Cat Stevens sitting amid Wayne Newton, The Captain & Tennille, and Meco's jittery electro-take on the Star Wars theme. Seven discs, 160 selections! To paraphrase a popular ad slogan of the era, you won't believe you listened to the whole thing. --Steven StolderCustomer Reviews:

Peace, man............2007-05-31
And now, I find that I'm doing the same thing with this set of CD's! It's freakin' 1979 all over again!
How can you cram so much 70's goodness into this box set? And to get the ORIGINAL songs from the ORIGINAL stars is just groovy. Too many compilations now have the original stars doing remakes of their songs and it just seems pointless to me.
Brandy (You're A Fine Girl), unabashedly my favourite song of ALL TIME, (just ask those that have to endure it EVERY time I karaoke) finds a great spot here in its ORIGINAL glory.
If you're thinking of getting a 70's compilation, STOP THINKING!! BUY THIS ON IMPULSE AND ENJOY A HASTY DECISION FOR ONCE!!
There'll be no time to feel any guilt when you're singing along to all the classics you grew up with.
"Billy, Don't Be A Hero!" "You're No Good" if you don't "Rock The Boat" and "Let Your Love Flow"! "Me and Mrs. Jones" will be "Stuck In The Middle With You" just "Smokin' In The Boys Room" if you don't "Get Down Tonight"!!
But hey, if you think "I'm Not In Love" with this set and you don't buy it?
Well....."Everybody Plays The Fool" "You Sexy Thing"!!
The great, the good, the bad and the plain awful, in one delightful package.......2007-04-15
It is a bit expensive, and some have criticized the inclusion of the Top 40 single versions over the definitive album versions, but hey guys/gals, this is what they played on the radio at the time. Also missing are some of the superstars, but as the booklet says, you probably have lots of those already (e.g., Paul McCartney, Elton John, mid-period Stones, Billy Joel, etc.)
I was hesitant about the cost, but after one full listen through, I'm extremely pleased. Thank you Rhino (and thanks to Amazon, too who listed the delivery time as several weeks but it came within one week).

What a blast! Applying garage-band urgency to a selection of material that extends well beyond countrypolitan favorites, the freewheeling SCOTS demonstrate surprising range and ferocious chops. At the heart of this labor of love, as the album's title suggests, are crossover country favorites from an era when the music was a staple on Top 40 AM radio (where many fans first heard "Oh, Lonesome Me," "Wolverton Mountain," and "Rose Garden"). Yet the release shows an equal affinity for the rock of that era, as the band gives the Kinks' "Muswell Hillbillies" an arrangement that recalls the Sir Douglas Quintet, injects a guitar surge from "Gloria" into the (pre-Creedence) Golliwogs' "Fight Fire," savors the fuzztone dreaminess of T. Rex's "Life's a Gas," and transforms the Who's "Happy Jack" into a banjo-driven hoedown. In other highlights, the band puts pedal-to-the-metal overdrive into the psychedelic shimmer of the Byrds' "Have You Seen Her Face" and adds some pop bounce to the swamp blues of Slim Harpo's "Te Ni Ne Ni Nu." The result is an irresistible party platter. --Don McLeeseCustomer Reviews:
Fun.......2007-07-16
Favorite party album band brews up another gem.......2007-07-06
Not so my CD collection. I still have many of the CDs I bought in those years, and it is stunning how many CDs I bought that had one good song surrounded by dreck. I guess that's the problem of going to a high school where Ratt, Cinderalla, Poison and other big-hair bands were worshipped - there's only so much redemption that "Pyromania" and "1984" can provide.
Suffice it to say that as I've grown older, I've grown more temperate in my musical purchases - if the album isn't consistently good from start-to-finish, I won't buy it. Based on that criteria, I can offer little praise higher than to say that I've bought all of SCOTS' albums and have never regretted it - not a single "Invasion of Your Privacy" in the bunch.
That SCOTS would crank out a cover album doesn't surprise me - this is a band that is proud of its influences and has paid tribute to other songwriters and bands in previous albums - "Pass the Hatchet," anyone? This album features the unique SCOTS' take on a bunch of old timey stuff that comes out smelling like . . . well, not roses, but at the very least a big old mess of barbeque.
SCOTs defines the party album for me. There are few better guarantees for a fun get-together than to put a few of these albums in the player and let fly. And these are good for both lazy outdoor get togethers and late-night boot-stompers. These are quick, fun tunes played with style and belted out with sass - especially when Mary Huff gets her big old voice in gear.
If you haven't checked out SCOTS before, I can't tell you that "CF" is the perfect album to start with . . . I'd start with my favorite, "Liquored Up and Lacquered Down," but that's just me. Suffice it to say that this album won't steer you wrong, and may open up vast new possibilities as you reconsider a slighted musical genre.

"Something To Hollar About!".......2007-05-07
Then there's the other stuff, among them: The Kinks "Muswell Hillbilly" gets the countrified kick it needs! T.Rex's "Life's A Gas" - my fave track on this album - is presented as an Acid-Rockabilly duet! Guitarist/Ring Leader Rick Miller can't do a covers album without some John Fogerty/CCR material, and SCOTS cover "Tombstone Shadow" and "Fight Fire" (Super cool version!).And just when you think it's all souped-up modern rockabilly, they take it down a notch and present The Who's "Happy Jack" as a sort of Country Bears Jamboree.
This is easily one of SCOTS smoothest and most listenable albums! ( Not that I don't love the ORIGINAL material. But a break every now and then is absolutely acceptable!)

Album Description
Rise Against are a political punk band from Chicago who recorded Siren Song of the Counter-Culture with Rage Against the Machine producer GGGarth and Rage and Nirvana mixer Andy Wallace. The four band members came together from punk bands 88 Fingers Louie, Pinhead Circus, and the Enemy, and the emo band Baxter, and play old school punk (e.g., Descendants) with a strong political point of view. Siren Song of the Counter-Culture has drawn rave reviews from key publications. Rolling Stone praised the band's "rousing, intelligent fury," while Alternative Press said "the band's engrossing hardcore is an urgent siren song that's appropriate for these angst-ridden, uncertain times."Customer Reviews:

"Camel Walk" ALONE is worth 5 stars.......2006-08-22
I first heard from this album when a local radio show would play "Camel Walk" almost to death, but still every time I'd crank up the volume and rock along. The song is astoundingly swinging and funny and a little bit scary--S & M involving oatmeal snack pies? To this day, if something catches me by surprise, I'll call out, "Little Debbie, Little Debbie! I'ma comin' on home, baby!" This song is a little more methodical than tracks like "Nitty Gritty" and "Greenback Fly," which just makes you want to be Johnny Depp in _Cry Baby_ all over again. And songs like "Galley Slave" and "Skullbucket" will bring you back to those great instrumentals like "Pipeline" and "Jack the Ripper."
It is hard to avoid making comparisons with the Reverend Horton Heat when talking about Southern Culture, mainly because they both run the same fine line between making fun of rockabilly while also deeply praising it. If psychobilly is the new moniker for modern rockabilly, then let this band sit on the throne with the Rev and hold sway over all that is good and true and makes you rock your bones just one more time.

real deal Psychobillies. No poseurs, when they sing about fried
chicken, they're reallly singing about fried chicken. When was the last time you heard a CD that was just plain fun to
listen to?
This particular CD has been out for quite a while, but it's
worth tracking down. An excellent place to begin for those
unfamiliar with them. Best listened to with a bucket of
Col. Sanders, NASCAR on the TV, a bottle of supermarket scotch
on the TV tray and all your neighbors at the trailer park makin' that old doublewide rock...
Raucous fun; this band does better.......2004-05-04
Some of the songs stand up even against SCOTS' more polished work (check out "Liquored Up and Lacquered Down") - such as "Voodoo Cadillac," "Skullbucket," and "Nitty Gritty." Others, like "8 Piece Box" and "Dirt Track Date" sound like a good jam session gone awry -- the song has promise, but it doesn't seem to go anywhere.
The tiki-lounge beauty of "Make Mayan a Hawaiian" is charming, and the quick little ditty, "Whole Lotta Things" is sure to get stuck in your head (in a good way) long after it's over.
Most of SCOTS' songs have lyrics that remind you that the band is just havin' fun riffing away, and that's perfect for lazy Saturday afternoons. Unfortunately, this apparently relaxed attitude keeps "DTD" out of my regular CD rotation despite its charms (unlike "Liquored Up and Lacqured Down," which is a staple).
When you're compiling your list of fruit to soak in grain alcohol for three days prior to your next party, make sure you jot down stopping by the record store to snag some SCOTS -- any SCOTS album is just what you need for the crazy good times.

Yes, notice how I have skipped some of the US only singles like "I'll Tumble 4 Ya" "Miss Me Blind" and "Mistake #3". Well, those songs are not bad. However, they make the group look very bubblicious, when the UK singles, like I'm Afraid of Me, Medal Song, and God Thank You Woman are professional, and are a step above those US only singles. Notice how the only US only single here in my list is "Gusto Blusto". It is the ultimate dance rocker, with George's voice being dazzling, as well as being produced by the power team of Arif Mardin and Lew Hahn. "Heaven's Children" is also included, which was going to be the group's last single released in 1986, until it was cancelled from the poor sales of "Gusto Blusto" in the US. Not only is "I Just Wanna Be Loved" included, is is the best version of it from the UK Greatest Moments album. "Strange Voodoo" is included, which was also introduced as the last song George sang at the 1998 Culture Club reunion concert on VH-1, which premiered on his birthday. And yes, it was my birthday and all ultimate Culture Club fans birthday on that day too, Sunday, June 14. "That's The Way", is also included, which proved that George and Helen Terry were the ultimate soul singers ever to live. "Unfortunate Thing" is Boy George's biography to help children remember to stay in school. Whether you believe it our not, George was one of the most important figures to the world at that time, and he still is, if at least his record company in America didn't hate him as well as other jerks. Smart people know George Alan O'Dowd was and still is the best singer in the world, as well as Culture Club being the best group in the world. To talk about Christianity, Boy George is more Christian than any singer I loved since I was five years old in 1984. I love you and all smart people do as well, George. Thanks.

Awesome! A Southern Rock Must-Have!.......2004-05-04
SCOTS, true to its roots, makes party albums. Virtually every song in their repertoire is suited for Saturday night in Chapel Hill, North Carolina -- a night of beer and dancing following a day of BBQ pork. Without losing their raw edge or their insane sense of humor, SCOTS has put a bit of elbow grease into this album, and the results shine.
The title track is probably the best known tune on the album, if only due to its clever use in the "Miss Congeniality" soundtrack. And it's a well-done piece of work, complete with the SCOTS' trademark tongue in cheek. But it gets some worthy challenges as top song from "King of the Mountain," "Cheap Hotels," and "Just How Lonely." "I Learned to Dance in Mississippi" is sure to pack any dance floor, as is their version of "Pass the Hatchet." "Hitting on Nothing" is a chick anthem if there every was one, and "Drunk and Lonesome (Again)" is a sure-fire singalong at many a late-night fraternity house.
One of the premier good-time rock bands, SCOTS set a new standard for themselves with this effort. Check it out!
A Bag of Stale Fritos and alot of Mosquitos..........2003-01-30
rubber tire swing. You do it once-you can do it a million times
over. Same for the SCOTS-still making that tried and true
psych/voodoobilly/surf music since day one, now honed down
and as sharp as a farmer's chicken decapitatin' hatchet. Where
else can you get a peach colored leisure suit and a pair of
Florsheim boots in the same ditty? Oh yeah...and nobody can play
the Danelectro like Rick Miller. Great production, even better
songs. While listenin, you can "let yer dog run he'll be back when he's done...chasin' those critters away." And bassist Mary
Huff's standout "Just How Lonely" will send shivers down any
Patsy Cline fan's spine. Great music, excellent lyrics...not a
dud in the lot. Get yer 8-piece box of fried chicken, a case of
Dixie blackened voodoo beer, prop up yer feet, let out a few
"YEEHA'S", sit back and enjoy...for this is The Real McCoy.
Makes you want to move to Mississippi?.......2002-11-08
My favorite cut is the first. "Liquored Up and Lacquered Down"...a bizzare, no make that a "boozare" song about a guy's wife who gets her hair all Lacquered Down before she goes out with him to get Liquored Up. I guess she's a "big hair" girl.

At best, Boy George and his band Culture Club were a dizzy mix of camp, drag, dub, disco, reggae, and new wave. The androgynous George rhumba-ed his way through hits like "I'll Tumble 4 Ya" and crooned with white boy soul through their reggae classic "Do You Really Want to Hurt Me" as well as the Delta-inspired "Karma Chameleon." At worst, the band had trouble finding direction and the proper vehicles for his smooth voice, producing clunkers like "Church of the Poison Mind." "Move Away" and "Miss Me Blind"--which actually took its chorus from a Japanese whiskey commercial--were Culture Club at their most brilliant. The band knew it wasn't making fine art and rose to the task of crafting flawless pop gems. George's later work didn't have the sense of fun and abandon as his stint with Culture Club, but his remake of "The Crying Game" again demonstrated those soulful pipes. Also worthy of note from his later career is the Krishna-inspired club hit "Bow Dow Mister." --Steve GdulaCustomer Reviews:

In Praise of Boy George and Culture Club.......2005-11-11
Most of the singles are present, from CC's 3 weeks at #2 hit "Do You Really Want To Hurt Me" from their debut Kissing To Be Clever. This ballad highlights George's soul-tinged vocals, as well as the backing section of soul singers and airy, lounging synths. My favourite CC ballad is the tearjerking non-charter "Victims," with its melancholy piano and backing crooners, as well as a midsection that briefly goes into a classic disco crescendo before settling back down.
The upbeat Caribbean-like "I'll Tumble 4 Ya" peaked at #9, demonstrating CC's dance pop skills. However, the non-LP "Time (Clock of the Heart)" which also peaked at #2, incorporated some classic disco synths with a funky bassbeat, telling that illusory theme how time won't give us time, making lovers feel like they got something real.
Guest artists that helped Culture Club include Jermaine Stewart, who was on their #5 dance hit "Miss Me Blind" before he sang about not having to take one's clothes off. Ironically, it was this song that has the lyric "kissing to be clever," and not their debut album. Helen Terry's wailing soulful vocals found their way not only here but on the #10 "Church of the Poison Mind," an infectious dance tune Wham! would've given their blow-dried hair for. Terry later helped George on his solo single "Generations of Love" also included here.
And it's no contest that Colour By Numbers was their best albums, as that yielded four Top Ten singles, including the three-week chart-topper "Karma Chameleon," of how love games make that love touch and go, like the chameleon that camouflages itself to become invisible. George performed this and I believe "Move Away" when he guest-starred on the A-Team episode "Cowboy George."
However, nothing from Waking Up With The House On Fire is present, meaning no "The War Song," one of my favourite CC singles. The sole representative from From Luxury To Heartache was the #12 "Move Away," CC's last Top 40 hit and one of my favourites, a slick number highlighted by a snappy drum machines and bass, but with some downbeat lyrics, made more so as Boy George's drug problems probably contributed to low sales of what was an underrated album.
Two quibbles. One are the spoken bits preceding "Do You Really Want To Hurt Me" and "Sweet Toxic Love." The others are the exclusion of "The War Song," "Black Money," "Mistake No. 3," and the pro-gay rights anthem "No Clause 28," in response to an anti-gay legislation pushed by then British PM Maggie Torture.
Boy George hit #1 in the UK with his reggaefied cover of Bread's "Everything I Own." He branched out, going a bit mystical with the acoustic singalong of "Bow Down Mister," where he called for doing whatever your religion called for you do, with the same soulful CC choruses, with some hare Krishna refrains. Some sitar is present in the bittersweet two-sides-of-the-coin "Sweet Toxic Love," proving he never lost his touch-just his American audience. In it, he embraces yet feels agony over love, "give me some of that sweet toxic love...to lift me up, to drive me insane." Elsewhere, he assertively tells his lover-"I'm not your punch bag, I'm not your floor, you cant walk on me until you get bored." Pretty intelligent stuff.
His last big hit in the US was the #15 title song to The Crying Game, which ranks as one of the best emotionally-racking songs I've ever heard-"first there are kisses, then there are sighs, and then before you know where you are, you're saying goodbye." Per the song, I've asked myself-not the moon-why are there heartaches and tears.
Culture Club was way too progressive for many parts of the U.S., where a clear homophobic element was rife. The name though was just right. Consider their original incarnations-In Praise of Lemmings (bizarre) or Sex Gang Children, (small trouble marketing that).

This is a raspberry swirl in a bran-muffin world: bad for you but too good to pass up. On their sixth album, Southern Culture on the Skids offer a tour of white-trash, Americana, hillbilly funk, B-movie instrumentals, road-kill rock--all without leaving their customized Laz-E-Boy. Southern Culture guitarist Rick Miller, bassist Mary Huff, and drummer Dave Hartman genuinely love this music, even as they mock its black-velvet trappings. The highest low points: "Banana Puddin,'" an ode to day-old desserts, and "Carve That Possum," an Uncle Dave Macon cover that sounds like an in-bred cousin of the blues. When Southern Culture move into the neighborhood, you can bet property values will plummet in reverse ratio to the elevation of your mood. --Keith MoererCustomer Reviews:
