Count Five - 'The Very Best Of.....' (Collectables) .......2006-06-19

What is with this MISLEADING title?The 'best of'?Count Five had JUST one album out,PEOPLE!Get it right.Nonetheless,this most complete(there's an import pressing of this title out with fourteen tracks)as this U.S. release has a total of eighteen is a pretty nice reissue,I thought.I've spoken with a few fans of '60's psych and those who had bought a copy of the original vinyl(years ago)before CD's came along mentioned that "Psychotic Reaction" was the only good song on the entire lp.NOT TRUE!I really enjoyed getting my own copy of this short lived(1965 - 67)garage/psych San Jose's five piece sole effort.Most of the tunes here are well written and produced,like the title track,the previously mentioned "Psychotic Reaction","Double-Decker Bus",The Who cover "My Generation", "They're Gonna Get You", "Can't Get Your Lovin'", "Out In The Street" Curtis Mayfield's "You Must Believe Me" and "Merry Go Round".Includes an informative six-page fold-out front insert,packed with liner notes.Very nice.Recommended.

Seminal garage band hit and the career behind it.......2005-07-12

This San Jose, CA band could be the poster act for "one hit wonders," given that anything beyond their seminal single, "Psychotic Reaction," is probably unknown beyond garage/psych aficionados and those who knew the band from live appearances. But like so many acts whose art only intersects popular acclaim for an instant, there was a great deal more to their catalog than one chart hit.

The Count Five were spawned by the same South Bay scene that produced The Syndicate of Sound, and, eventually, The Chocolate Watchband. They were a bona fide band of high school and college students who'd been gigging steadily by the time they landed a record contract with Double Shot. Even more importantly, the original song that would become their defining three minutes had been their calling card for countless label auditions; by the time they laid down the version that sparked national acclaim, the song had been allowed to marinate in numerous improvements. Even after they laid it down it was tweaked for AM radio with a razor blade laid to recording tape.

This 17-track collection from the Collectables label is bettered by Big Beat's 24-track compilation of 2003 (titled "Psychotic Revelation"). The latter pulls together the entire history of the band, from the original, unedited version of "Psychotic Reaction" and its reworked hit-single, through hastily recorded album tracks, and post-LP singles. Big Beat's Alec Palao provides extensive liner notes that include generous interviews with original band members and their management/production team. Of particular interest are the details of how regional radio play was parlayed (station-by-station!) into the critical mass of national chart success; a fascinating peek into the pre-consultant world of locally-controlled AM radio.

What comes through on both versions of this disc is that the Count Five was an excellent garage band whose emphasis on Yardbirds' styled rock could spark up covers of British Invasion material (or, in the case of "You Must Believe Me," British interpretations of American soul songs) and fine originals. It's no wonder they were a favorite at area teen clubs, high school dances and mall openings!

Pre-Pubescent madness!.......2005-03-17

What a terrible shame that these guys were only college kids messing around. They ROCK! This is so Pre-Punk psychedelic Rock,, I love it so much. It says they were offered a record deal and turned it down so they could stay in college. Bad move you guys! I rank them right there with the Herman Hermits if not better.

GARAGEY PUNK AT ITS BEST!.......2004-12-20

Supposedly, the Counts blew the nascent Golliwogs (later to become Creedence Clearwater Revival) off the stage at a battle of the bands in California. Whether this is true or not ultimately don't matter a fig, cuz these guys definitely had the goods. Screamin' guitars, snotty vocals, wailin' harmonica and a drummer to die for all contributed to a great, great garage sound. Formed as the Squires (a way too common name for a band in those days), they changed their name to the Count Five in a combination of the Counts (to sound more English) and one of their fave Brit bands, the Dave Clark Five. Not that their sound was anything like the Dave Clark Five...more like the Yardbirds! They dearly loved the "rave-up" that the Yardbirds were famous for, and used the sudden switching of tempo to classic effect in their signature tune "Psychotic Reaction". That 45, on the microscopic Double Shot label, roared into the charts in 1966, bulleting all the way to number five and into the annals of music history. Unfortunately, none of their followup singles made much of a chart dent, despite their quality and energy. Listen to "Double-Decker Bus", "Teeny Bopper, Tenny-Bopper", "Pretty Big Mouth", "She's Fine" (a nice punky Gerry and the Pacemakers kinda thing), and the chunky guitars of "Peace Of Mind", and you'll see why these five guys have such a reputation. At least we have this collection of all 18 of their recordings, including non-LP 45 sides. It's a document of a time when five guys with musical instruments and tons of passion could rule the world, if only for a moment.

A must for garage fans.......2007-02-06

"Psychotic Reaction" is one of those songs that never seems to die, and turns up on mid 1960s rock compilations far more often than you'd think given that the Count Five were one-hit wonders. Thankfully, most of the rest of this CD is cut from similar cloth. Lots of garage punks tried to emulate British rockers like the Yardbirds, but the Count Five came closer than most. If the production values on this CD were slightly better, it could almost pass for something recorded way back in Swinging London and to be very honest it is no worse (or better) than early LPs by the Kinks or the Dave Clark Five.

In other words, this music is pretty darned fun to listen to. Most garage punks made truly awful albums, but this one is a pleasant surprise because the good outweighs the bad. You'll probably eventually go back to listening only to the title song after a few listens, but I think any self-respecting garage punk will want this in their permanent collection. I'm glad I have mine!

From what LOOKS to be an earlier reissue of the San Jose's psych/garage band's sole album.This one,however is on the Edsel label,which has got four(4)less bonus cuts than their pressing on the Collectables label(see my review).Different cover and all,as this is for the completists,as I believe I actually know one patron that has this CD,as well as the one I just mentioned.Still hard to believe these were actually high school seniors that made this 1967 classic.

Just to correct the previous reviewer's assertion that the Count Five made several other albums after "Psychotic Reaction" (which, by the way, is not what this CD represents-- this is rather a collection of songs from the original LP plus b-sides and singles)--> they did NOT record a thing! Lester Bangs invented it all. Too many have taken his word for it, but any who do would be in vain were they to search for the records Mr Bangs talks about in such detail and with such enthusiasm.

Furious Chutzpah...The All-Time Psychepunk Garage Band..........2001-05-31

They were hardly the first of what we have long since known as garage bands, but you would be hard enough pressed to find a garage band this side of the original Stooges with as much furious chutzpah as the Count Five. At essence a quintet of R and B aspirants, the Count Five melded that with their having been, apparently, blown away completely by the Yardbirds' version of it, to forge an attack of cheerful inspired amateurism with more than traces of fury. The Count Five weren't exactly the only ones looking to make their own version of the Yardbirds' music in the mid-1960s - but they came up with unquestionably the most inspired cops thereof, "Psychotic Reaction" mashing the verse structure of "Over Under Sideways Down" and, for the instrumental breaks, the lunatic chaos which closed out the British quintet's take on Bo Diddley's "I'm A Man".

So who cares if the rest of the album is filler when held up against "Psychotic Reaction"? This pack put together more furiously engaging filler than an awful lot of allegedly superior acts were doing in the mid-1960s (and if you can listen to "Pretty Big Mouth" or "Peace of Mind," or "Double Decker Bus" and not get caught in the chutzpah and the thrust of it all, you're obviously having a bad day), and they seemed to hit each song as though they'd never get to cut another one for as long as they lived. In more ways than one, the Count Five should have received what the Kingsmen got - the Kingsmen got "Louie, Louie" and a world of legend out of all proportion to their overall selves (let's face it: the Kingsmen's filler makes the Count Five's resemble "Sgt. Pepper's Lonely Hearts Club Band"), while the Count Five had to settle merely for being a semi-legend of psychedelic punk grunge.

But if they really were playing as though they'd never get to cut anything else with each song, they couldn't have been more wrong; the Count Five actually had a couple more albums in them - the ones to hunt out are "Carburetor Dung" and "Cartesian Jetstream," both of which damn near make "Psychotic Reaction" the album sound like Herman's Hermits, even if their songs aren't exactly up to "Psychotic Reaction's" lineup. (Not for nothing did the late, legendary gonzo rock critic Lester Bangs spin his most memorable essay among a pack of memorables off the Five - "Psychotic Reactions and Carburetor Dung: A Tale of These Times," which ended up becoming the title essay of a posthumous collection of his most representative criticism.) Those who wonder which was the missing root of both punk and grunge, this is said root. In ways they probably would not have given a thought to knowing, Nirvana, the Ramones, the Sex Pistols, the New York Dolls, the MC5, and the Stooges owed at least as much a debt to the Count Five as to anyone else, and probably more so.

Count Five : Psychotic Reaction - another viewpoint.......2000-08-07

I just read the review by a California music fan, dated July 1998, about the above album. I thought it would interest other fans of the pyschedelic sixties sound to hear another opinion. I was lucky enough to pick up this album two years ago in England and was overwhelmed by it. I would certainly recommend this album to other enthusiasts. I have recently acquired the Nuggets collection which includes the single 'Psychotic Reaction' and was surprised as I was under the impression that the group had to be English because their sound is more similiar to late sixties English pyschedelia rather than the more 'thumpy' pop/rock based American sound. I encourage all to get this album.

Weak except for the title song.......1998-07-20

These one-hit wonders put out this album which basically consists of the terrific title song and lots of more pedestrian filler. Unless you are curious or a completist, all you really need is a single of "Psychotic Reaction." If you can't find a single (and most likely you will not, these days), get it on one of the many '60s compilations out there -- the original "Nuggets" compilation being the best choice, if you can still find that. I had the good fortune of finding this Count Five album on vinyl in a bargain bin for about $3, and I snatched it. It's certainly worth that price, but I would hesitate at spending a CD price for it.

Count Five : Psychotic Reaction - another viewpoint.......2000-08-07

I just read the review by a California music fan, dated July 1998, about the above album. I thought it would interest other fans of the pyschedelic sixties sound to hear another opinion. I was lucky enough to pick up this album two years ago in England and was overwhelmed by it. I would certainly recommend this album to other enthusiasts. I have recently acquired the Nuggets collection which includes the single 'Psychotic Reaction' and was surprised as I was under the impression that the group had to be English because their sound is more similiar to late sixties English pyschedelia rather than the more 'thumpy' pop/rock based American sound. I encourage all to get this album.

Weak except for the title song.......1998-07-20

These one-hit wonders put out this album which basically consists of the terrific title song and lots of more pedestrian filler. Unless you are curious or a completist, all you really need is a single of "Psychotic Reaction." If you can't find a single (and most likely you will not, these days), get it on one of the many '60s compilations out there -- the original "Nuggets" compilation being the best choice, if you can still find that. I had the good fortune of finding this Count Five album on vinyl in a bargain bin for about $3, and I snatched it. It's certainly worth that price, but I would hesitate at spending a CD price for it.
