Elton John has been a force in pop music since the mid-'60s. This extravagant and colorful box set presents, in chronological order, his hit songs through 1990. Designed to accommodate a large booklet and the four CDs, which when placed side by side present a likeness of Elton, the package indicates the care and expense this huge-selling artist commands.

With the exception of some very early work with Long John Baldry, the music is exclusively focused on the songs Elton wrote in conjunction with lyricist Bernie Taupin. Their songwriting method--whereby Taupin submits lyrics to John, who gives them musical shape--is discussed at length in an insightful interview with the two men. This method has produced a truly astonishing number of hit records, particularly throughout the '70s. Discs 2 and 3 contain all the monster hits--"Goodbye Yellow Brick Road," "Daniel," "Bennie and the Jets," "Crocodile Rock"--as well as many others. The combination of John's pliable and emotive voice, Taupin's well-wrought words, and strong production values led to megastardom.

The '80s were a period of transition and growth for Elton John. Disc 4 has a number of hits from that period--"Sad Songs," "Sacrifice," and "You Gotta Love Someone"--as well as featuring several live performances before a full orchestra, including "Don't Let the Sun Go Down on Me." His voice and stage persona both reflected a maturing Elton John.

This box set, compiled by Taupin and John themselves, was completed in 1990 and summed up Elton John's career to that point. The title of To Be Continued has proven to be more than just wishful thinking, as he continues to maintain his vitality in popular music to this day. --Wally Shoup

ON DISC 1, (2) SONGS HAVE DROP OUTS IN THE RECORDING, DANIEL IS A RUFF CUT NOT SMOOTH AS I HEARD ON A 2-TRACK MASTER DONE BY STEVE HOFFMAN. DISC 2. NOTHING TO COMPLAIN ABOUT. DISC 3. PHILADELPHIA FREEDOM AND ISLAND GIRL COULD HAVE BEEN DONE BETTER. DISC 4. One Of The Finest Boxed Sets Ever Issued.......2005-05-15

Even though his career was far from over, by 1990 Elton John seemed more than ready for a boxed set of his career, and fans had their hopes fulfilled with the four cd "To Be Continued.." set, a career spanning, 68 track collection of his work up to that point.

Disc One contains his material from 1965 to 1972. This disc is a treasure trove of rarities for hardcore fans, including "Come Back Baby" from Elton's band Bluesology, his early singles "Lady Samantha" and "It's Me That You Need", the demo of "Your Song", the 1970 version of "Grey Seal" and "Friends", as well as classics like "Border Song", "Your Song", "Tiny Dancer", "Levon", "Honky Cat" and "Mona Lisas And Mad Hatters", as well as key album tracks like "Sixty Years On" and "Country Comfort". The only serious omissions are "Burn Down The Mission" and the fact that nothing from Elton's first album "Empty Sky" is included ("Skyline Pigeon" is one of the most important songs Elton and Bernie Taupin ever wrote, and its omission is almost unforgivable.

Disc Two starts off with "Rocket Man" before jumping to two choice cuts from "Don't Shoot Me, I'm Only The Piano Player", the big hits and certified classics "Daniel" and "Crocdile Rock". Next comes a six tracks from the 1973 work of art "Goodbye Yellow Brick Road". In addition to the familliar hits "Saturday Night's Alright For Fighting", "Goodbye Yellow Brick Road" and "Bennie And The Jets", you get the epic "Funeral For A Friend/Love Lies Bleeding", the rocking "All The Young Girls Love Alice" and the luscious "Harmony". A few rarities come next. "Whenever You're Ready (We'll Go Steady Again)" is a 1950s' style rocker, "Jack Rabbit" is a novelty number, and "Step Into Christmas" is a jolly yuletide number. "Young Man's Blues" is jaunty rocker. "The Bitch Is Back" is surprisingly the sole representative from 1974's "Caribou", strange since the studio version of "Don't Let The Sun Go Down On Me" as well as the popular album track "Ticking" came from it. ("Don't Let The Sun Go Down On Me" is included in a live version on disc 4). "Pinball Wizard" is indeed a cover of The Who song from "Tommy", and in my opinion is better than The Who's version. Closing out this disc is "Someone Saved My Life Tonight", surprisingly the only track from "Captain Fantastic And The Brown Dirt Cowboy". The title track, "Better Off Dead", "Writing" and "We All Fall In Love Sometimes/Curtains" should have been here. Also, the studio version of "Candle In The Wind" is omitted, but is included in a live version.

Disc three starts off with the smash soul hit "Philadelphia Freedom", followed by the John Lennon collaborations "One Day At A Time", the terrific hit cover of "Lucy In The Sky With Diamonds" and a live duet of "I Saw Her Standing There". Next is the lightweight number one hit "Island Girl", which is the only track from "Rock Of The Westies", but that is a good thing since it's a pretty weak album. After the smash hits "Don't Go Breaking My Heart" (with Kiki Dee) and "Sorry Seems To Be The Hardest Word", the 1978-1982 period is covered, a time when Elton lost Bernie Taupin's lyrics and his music careened all over the map without any real direction. This isn't necessarily a bad thing, since a lot of Elton's best work came from this period, including the hits "Little Jeannie" and "Mama Can't Buy You Love", you get lesser known album tracks like "Song For Guy", "Chloe" and "The Retreat". Fortunately, by the end of the disc, Elton has seemed to have found his way again, thanks to the haunting hit "Blue Eyes".

Disc four kicks off with the stirring John Lennon tribute "Empty Garden", one of his best songs. This is followed by a string of 1980s' hits, including "I'm Still Standing", "I Guess That's Why They Call It The Blues", "Sad Songs (Say So Much)", "Nikita" and "I Don't Wanna Go On With You Like That" (the latter represented in a good but inferior to the original seven minute dance remix). There are also live versions of "Candle In The Wind" (a version that made the top ten on both sides of the Atlantic) and "Don't Let The Sun Go Down On Me". The version of "Give Peace A Chance" is very funny. The four new tracks are brilliant, but I will just mention the standout track "Easier To Walk Away". Elton takes a stab at hip hop here and contributes a great vocal. The only songs I wish were on this disc are "Who Wears These Shoes" and "Healing Hands".

My only complaint other than the omission of certain tracks is that since this collection was released 15 years ago, it should have been remastered (which it is) and had two more discs of 1990-onward material. In case they do this, here is a potential track list.

A very well done chronology of Sir Elton.......2005-04-06

I have this collection on cassette from 1990 so I cannot speak to the quality of the CD. I can, however highly recommend this compilation to any and all Elton John fans. From the lesser known "early" tracks like "Lady Samantha", "Come Back, Baby" and "Bad Side of the Moon" to the hits that made EJ a superstar in the 70's and 80's, this collection gives the listener a grand tour of Elton's growth as a musician and of his and Bernie Taupin's evolution as songwriters.
Some nice bonuses include a rare "demo" version of "Grey Seal", and some b sides like "Jack Rabbit" and "Young Man's Blues".
There is a nice balance of tracks from the albums (not just radio hits), singles and rarities. Especially noteworthy is the inclusion of "Lucy in the Sky", "Ego" and "Empty Garden".
In my opinion, this is definitely a collection worth having.
Another good EJ compilation is "Rare Masters" which includes the entire "Friends" soundtrack.

Personally, many boxed sets really can make or break the feeling an artist has made as a singer. Yet, so many people choose not to buy boxed sets because they are just too much in the way of money at times. Yet, there are some artists that are just so definitive with their music, a boxed set really shows itself quite well. For Elton John, his music has been displayed for so many delightful years. His songs have always maintained a staple in the music industry for over 35 years, and they still keep on coming back. Yet, he did have a boxed set at one time that was eradicated out of print for such a long time, it was recently brought back to life.

To Be Continued... The Elton John 1990 boxed set was recently re-released a couple of years ago. This boxed set is a very detailed reflection of Elton's career and the success that he has maintained. The four disc box set consists of so much in Elton's career including some of his earliest works when he was just known as Reg Dwight with tracks like Come Back Baby, and tracks from his first band Bluesology. The collection also includes so many great Elton John classics like Your Song, Sacrifice, Empty Garden (Hey, Hey Johnny), Mama Can't Buy You Love, the holiday classic Step Into Christmas, Tiny Dancer, and so many other classics.

Yet, with a lot of hits collections, there are a couple of disadvantages with the re-release of Elton's To Be Continued. One of those is that there are a few tracks that were overlooked like the overlooked Heartache All Over The World, That's What Friends Are For (his collaboration with Stevie Wonder, and Gladys Knight), A Word In Spanish, Club At The End Of Street and some other good ones. Another disadvantage is that you won't find any 90's recordings on this boxed set like Can You Feel The Love Tonight, The One, and such other great tracks. A third disadvantage is the price, because so many people aren't able to afford a boxed set, and opt for a cheaper, more convient hits collection.

Still, Elton John has maintained a great career that keeps on going, and his songs have maintained being a staple on radio and television today. For die hard Elton John fans, I honestly suggest To Be Continued.

The Temps are Timeless.......2007-06-13

Though any Temp Era (group lineup) has it's pluses and minuses, the Temps in the 80s are my favorite (by far with Ollie's vocals in their prime) and this Album only helps solidfy the case. I agree with the other comments but you guys are SLEEPING on the best cut of this Album, "Love Me Right".

I defy you all thinking otherwise. Ollie's vocals and the backing vocals are close to perfect. They may be asking to be "Loved" Right but their pleas are justified with how right this song is sung.

This is a great CD. The title song "To be Continued" is a masterpiece. A song that never grows old. That song alone is worth the price of a CD. When you add all of the other songs, this CD becomes a wonderful collectors item. How can we go about getting it re-released? The Temptations " To Be Continued " CD is a masterpiece.

Mounting a revival of 42nd Street seemed a bit premature--after all, the show had closed in 1989 after nearly nine years on Broadway. But as a giddy love letter to the musical theater, it can't be beat, so we're not going to complain. Inspired by Busby Berkeley's movie, the show includes one great Warren-Dubin number after another, making it a feast of titanium-plated hits that include "You're Getting to Be a Habit with Me," "Dames," "We're in the Money," "Lullaby of Broadway," and, of course, the title song. The leads are on the bland side, but the rest of the cast--most notably Mary Testa, Jonathan Freeman, and 2001 Tony-winner Christine Ebersole--has more than enough spunk to fuel this revival. This is one of the most joyous albums you're likely to hear in a while. What's The Big Deal?.......2006-08-02

Call me an old curmudgeon, but I never understood why everyone thought 42nd St was so wonderful. I saw the original cast and except for the two big songs, Lullaby of Broadway and 42nd St.( which, okay, were pretty spectacular ensemble dance numbers), the rest was kind of ho-hum, cornball nonsense set to a bunch of standards. Nothing original or ground breaking. Mindless fluff and very often done better. Had director/choreographer, the great Gower Champion not died on opening night (and which David Merrick shamelessly, grossly and tastelessly exploited), the show would have had a mild run and been gone and forgotten. But it became something of a theatrical legend and an incredibly, long running hit. Oh well, that's show biz! This recording is no better or worse than the original, pleasant if forgettable.

there are some very good songs in this show, but overall the content and many songs did not impress me at all. let me quote one for you-

does anyone feel a little bit uncomfortable with these lyrics? i know it was written awhile ago, but not so long ago that these kind of messages were readily accepted... i hope. i personally can't say i loved the show when i went to see it two years ago. the plot was unconnvincing and the themes personally bothered me. i'll admit that there are some winning songs in the album. some of my favorites being 'you're getting to be a habit with me' 'i only have eyes for you' and the title song, but my disliking for the actual show makes me regard the soundtrack in a negative light. if you will buy a cd for a handful of good songs amid many other, well, not so good, then buy it. first read up on the plot though. compared with the good, moving broadway plays, this one just doesn't measure up. it's all fluff. if you enjoy fluff, by all means get the cd.

Not the greatest, but good........2004-04-03

Out of the many soundtracks I own, I can't say 42nd street is my favourite. However, it gets a listen every now and then. The length of it isn't so much a problem [I can listen to the 2001 The Producers and restrain from growing tired], there are a few songs I don't care for. Not to mention, some I blatantly skip over. However, "You're Getting To Be a Habit with Me", "Only Have Eyes For You", "Lullaby of Broadway", "A Quarter to Nine", and "42nd Street" are all excellent, and worh the 20 bucks. The beginning of the sdtk isn't the most enthralling show tunes I've heard, but the latter half makes up for it. If you're aim is to work towards completing your broadway collection, by all means, get this album! But if you're not much of a fan of musicals, there are better. 3.5 stars.

The Big Parade.......2003-08-23

Even though the original performace only closed in 1989, after a nine year run(one of the longest-running shows in Broadway history), its really no suprise to see 42nd Street back in action. With catchy, classic songs such as the perky, slighty corny "We're in the Money", the comedic "Keep Young and Beautiful", the classic "You're Getting to Be a Habit with Me", the wonderful title song, and of course the big one, the turning point, the always great "Lullaby of Broadway", the show is larger than life. Christine Ebersole is truly a star, with an amazing vocal range. If you listen to all of her songs, you will hardly believe you are hearing the same person. David Elder has a perfect tenor voice, Michael Cumpsty, although everyone says he is no Jerry Orbach, has excellent acting skills, Mary Testa and Jonathan Freeman are the perfect pair, and Kate Levering is a talented Peggy Sawyer. The addition of some new songs, such as "Keep Young and Beautiful", "I Only Have Eyes for You", "With Plenty of Money and You" and the new verse to "42nd Street", make the show even greater. The "grandaddy of all backstage musicals" will never die: 42nd Street, that big parade, really will go on for years.

Truly the musical for those who love Broadway musicals.......2003-08-23

I discovered 42nd Street only this year, as it was my middle school musical. The music is catchy and fun, the lines are cute and funny, and the amount of dancing in the show is just amazing. Although I have yet to see the Broadway Revival,(unfortunately I was born too late for the original, I will never get over that)the CD carries the spirit of the show. Although the tapping is stronger on the original cast recording, the songs are just as beautifully done for the most part.(The original Lullaby of Broadway was better, but I liked the fact that you got to hear what I think is one of the mpost powerful lines in the show before the song). Along with the old favorites are some new ones, such as Keep Young and Beautiful and I Only Have Eyes for You. If you have heard both CDs, you will notice that some songs have different lyrics, like Maggie's verse of Shuffle of to Buffalo, and the added lyrics to 42nd Street. Christine Eberdsole's voice is amazing in range, in fact, if you listen to Shadow Waltz and then skip to the Act I Finale, you will hardly believe you are hearing the same person. Mary Testa and Jonathan Freeman are the perfect Maggie and Bert. Michael Cumpsty, although he is no Jerry Orbach, is a very good Julian Marsh. David Elder has a good tenor voice for Billy. Kate Levering, however, is a little disappointing. While a good singer, she isn't quite a Peggy Sawyer. From what I have heard, Meredith Patterson, the understudy, is more talented than Levering. All in all, if you consider yourself a lover of Broadway musicals, you HAVE to see and hear 42nd Street--Truly the Broadway musical for people who love Broadway musicals.

Short Compilation, But Still Perfect.......2007-07-13

There are many Merle Haggard compilations floating around these days, but "His Epic Hits," which showcases a some of his work from the early 80's, is one of the best despite only having eleven tracks on it. It gives the listener a good taste of Haggard without holding back too much or going overboard. Opening with "Reasons To Quit" and then winding its way through hits like "That's The Way Love Goes," "Big City," and "Going Where The Lonely Go," this album shows the listener that Haggard is just as comfortable singing ballads as he is with honky-tonk. George Jones and Willie Nelson are also here with Jones helping out on "C.C. Waterback" and Nelson pitching in on the great "Pancho and Lefty."

My personal favorite Haggard song (and the original reason I bought this album) is also found here: "Are The Good Times Really Over?"

For those who've never heard of Merle Haggard, this is an excellent introductory album. There are better and more complete collections of his work around, but for a good sampler, I'd suggest you pick up "His Epic Hits."

great songs from start to finish.......2004-03-19

When this album came out, Haggard was amidst the wildly successful duet phase of his career: from 1982-1983 he was with George Jones on the radio and in select concerts and from 1983-1984 Willie Nelson was paired with him. The album closes with his Top-10 duet with George, "C.C. Waterback". Willie is heard on two tracks: the Top-10 opener "Reasons To Quit" and then on the smash #1 "Pancho and Lefty", which in truth, is a Willie Nelson song with Haggard adding in a closing verse. other great songs are "Big City"; "Are The Good Times Really Over"; "My Favorite Memory"; and "That's The Way Love Goes". Most people tend to over-look or downplay Haggard's songs AFTER he left Capitol in the late '70s for MCA and then EPIC. CURB issued two volumes of hits on Haggard spotlighting his Capitol era, trying to include the most important songs in his career and they succeeded. MCA issued a Greatest Hits album in 1983 of his 1977-1982 hits. EPIC issued this album and the 1990 "Greatest Hits of the '80s" CD. This first volume of EPIC hits is essential if you have the 1990 sequel. however, several box sets contain ALL of these songs and many others but for the budget minded, seek out the individual hits CDs like this one.

Early eighties classics from Merle.......2004-02-16

Some say that the early eighties were Merle's best years. I wouldn't go quite that far, but he certainly made some excellent music back then and this set, dominated by ballads, proves it. In particular, there were two classic albums - Big city (represented here by three tracks) and Pancho and Lefty (a collection of duets with Willie Nelson, represented here by two tracks) - that are among the best he ever recorded.

Big city is represented by the title track, Are the good times really over and My favorite memory, although this classic album deserves to be heard in its entirety, whether you buy this collection of hits or not. Pancho and Lefty is represented by the title track (on which Merle only joins in near the end - it's almost a Willie solo track) and Reasons to quit.

Elsewhere, Merle shows his way with ballads such as You take me for granted, That's the way love goes (a cover of a Conway Twitty song that Merle later re-recorded as a duet with folk-pop singer Jewel, who is a fan of Merle's), Someday when things are good, What am I gonna do and Going where the lonely go.

Another country legend, George Jones, joins Merle on C C Waterback, rounding off an excellent set in fine style. Another of their duets, Yesterday's mine, can be found on an other of Merle's compilations, Greatest hits of the eighties, which (apart from that track) covers the second half of his Epic recordings.

This is a great collection of hits from Merle, of which only about half the tracks are included in his boxed set, Down the road. There are many compilations of his music out there, but this one is among the best despite only having eleven tracks.

The Best.......2002-12-09

This is the first and only Merle Haggard album I have ever owned and I never get tired of listening to it! Every single song on it is great. Listen to it a couple of times and you are hooked! Truly worth buying. I too am of the younger generation that truly appreciates the old country singers such as George Jones, Willie Nelson, Johnny Cash, etc. This stuff is good!

I remember this album when I was a very young man and it still sounds soooo good! He was in top form when ...To Be Continued was produced. It takes you back to the day when groove was in and being Cool was a way of life. Ike showed you how to say what you felt about your girl. We used to call it rapping!!!!

If Stax Would..........2006-01-15

If Stax Records would remaster this album, they should make The Isaac Hayes Movement and ...To Be Continued one complete collection because both albums sound excellent when played together. The other actually takes off and advances where the previous left off. I just listened to them for the first time in full today, I mean I've heard them before, but I had a chance to kick back and enjoy them. True epics and right there along with the other classic albums Ike has done. If You have not heard of Isaac Hayes, or if You only think of him as the voice of Chef on South Park, You got it twisted! Nuff respect due...

But it's not. Any way you slice it though it's still good. The weak spot here was the cover of "Our Day Will Come". However, it made up for it rather nicely with the cover of "The Look Of Love" which has reminiscence of the Philly Soul sound from the 70's. His was an even better version than Vanilla Fudge's. He also did a top notch cover of "You Lost That Loving Feeling". I write this not because we happen to share the same last name, but because it's some good sounding soul music.

true rap .......2005-06-08

Isaac Hayes selections on this cd are similiar to a mini movie
or love story. Ike's Rap leading into Our day will come get the
cd off to a great start. The pace and the story continue through
each selection. This cd gives you true rap and you can wind your
self into the rap because most of us have been there. Isaac was
never given enough credit for introducing modern rap in the
late 60's and 70's. This is a very satisfying cd.

A shock to the system of soul.......2004-09-19

This is the peak accomplishment of Isaac Hayes' career. In 1971 he took 60s soul music and made it sleek, symphonic and refined, paving the way for so much of what became 70s soul, including, most obviously, Barry White's boudoir romps and some of the long instrumental forays of disco. Was this a good thing? Well, as one who generally prefers 60s soul to 70s, I say yes. Soul needed to evolve, and Isaac Hayes' albums of 1969-1972, of which this is the best, came as a needed shock to the system. But Isaac did it without compromising the raw emotion found in the 60s greats. Here is a blow-by-blow:

"Ike's Rap" and "Our Day Will Come" (joined tracks). "Ike's Rap" is a young man's tender words over the phone to a forbidden lover, telling her "I got my greetings today" and will soon be off fighting a distant war. Gentle strings and the rat-a-tat of a military-style snare drum provide ominous backdrop. He then dedicates "the words of this song" to his lover, and suddenly we are into "Our Day Will Come", a radical updating of the early 60s hit by Ruby and the Romantics. Unlike Ruby's breezy optimism, Isaac presents it slowed way down, as a courageous affirmation of faith against terrible opposition. When the orchestral arrangement swells in the climax, if your eyes are still dry, you haven't really been listening. "Our Day Will Come" is my favorite track on the album.

"The Look of Love". What is took Sergio Mendes two and half minutes to do, Isaac gets done in 11 - just long enough to.... well, to generate the wish that this be "just the start of so many groovy nights like this". It ends with an "ahhhhhhhhhh" from Isaac that is sheer theater! This is much closer in spirit to Dusty Springfield's version than Sergio's.

"Ike's Mood". This an orchestral mood piece, but don't let that description fool you. It starts with a light-funk bass line, staccato brass, and girls singing "brr-ring it back" (suggesting the "lovin' feeling" of the next song). Then it morphs into a sweet melody played by oboe and flute, then gaining momentum until the whole orchestra throbs with it. All class.

"You've Lost that Lovin' Feeling". A good rendition, but at 12 minutes, maybe a tad too long. To me, the least interesting track.

"Running Out of Fools". Second best track on the album, and most faithful to the old 60s definition of soul. A very effective slow-burn of revenge against a woman who had played Isaac for a fool, and years later actually calls him up. The words are priceless. "Go ahead with all your sweet talkin', go ahead for all the good it can do - Have yourself a dime's worth of talkin', cause in 3 minutes I'm gonna hang right up on you." Isaac's singing is magnificent throughout the album, but this song was made for him. He delivers all the shock, the tears, the anger, the sting and the manly pride that it calls for.

"Suicide Notes and Butterfly Kisses" is a wrenching window into the mind and heart of bandleader and lead vocalist Alex Varkatzas. Classic Freestyle........great stuff........2001-06-27

This is one of the best freestyle albums I've ever purchased. There's so many great songs, such as "I Remember You", or "I'll Never Get Over You", and my personal favorite, "I'll Never Be The Same." The beats on most of the songs were good, too. It's too bad this was the only album Denine did; she's got a decent voice.

After This Album There Was No "To Be Continued".......2003-09-16

Denzil Foster and Thomas McElroy's Bay Area, To Be Continued (two females and a guy), came in 1993 and left in 1993. The album featured vocals, and raps from new jack swing band Samuelle, and raps from Ray Luv, Triple M, Michael Anthony, and Qwaylay. The two lead singles; "One On One," Jah's raps are strictly new jack, and "Free To Be," which is a complete Foster & McElroy production, but both these singles struggled to break into the mainstream, never breaking the top 70 on the billboard hot 100. To Be Continued settled as another forgotten group of the early 90s, and was dropped from East West (Atlantic) records a few months after this release, never getting the chance for a second effort. "Yo Mr. President," which Cool-Aid produces, and "Hard Times," are some other fine moments on Free To Be.
