5 out of 5 stars Awesome Set!.......2007-07-01

I am a huge fan of Jerry Goldsmith. They did a great job preserving his vision. I can listen to this collection for hours. Great music!

5 out of 5 stars Elmer Bernstein Film Music Collection.......2006-11-03

This is compilation of hit film music from one of the greatest composers in motion pictures. What is surprising though is the music not included like the Ghost And The Darkness, the 13th Warrior, Rudy and others. To be sure, 4 discs are not enough for a composure of this stature. THe recording, however, is an "engineering masterpiece" which makes the music even more enjoyable than when you first heard it at the movies. When are we ging to get the music that was omittd from this compilaton?

4 out of 5 stars Overall a strong Goldsmith sampler.......2006-04-11

Okay, this is a CD review, so the focus is on music, but I've got to say this first: this has got to be a contender for the ugliest cover art ever. I mean, come on...instead of a tribute to the composer, the cover looks like someone spilled a glass of merlot over a NASA photo.

Fortunately, even an ugly cover will not ruin good music. And the good news is that I'd say about 75 percent of the music is good....and on a 4 cd set, that's a lot. Like other Silva compilations, the strength of this compilation is the variety. There are selections from the big releases (Star Trek, Omen, Rambo), but there is also a healthy dose of tracks from the smaller releases(Under Fire, Lionheart, The Swarm).

Two examples come to mind. Capricorn One and The Great Train Robbery are two movies that are not exactly household names today, but are dominated by two of Goldmith's finest main themes. The City of Prague Philharmonic come through with terrific renditions. And there are plenty of other strong performances...a few being concert versions conducted by Goldsmith himself. Suprisingly, "The Wind and the Lion" works, which is no small accomplishment given the ferentic original performance of "Raisuli Attacks".

It's not a complete success. A few of the performances fall flat, particularly some of the more inventive scores. Total Recall is just bad, mangling the performance with poor percussion and synthesizer choices to boot. Also a letdown is the Klingon Attack from the first Star Trek movie. The Prague Philhamonic attempt doesn't sound bad--it's just that once you've heard the original soundtrack's "blaster beam" with enough bass to rattle your teeth...well let's just say Silva's version is a little tinny in comparison.

But I shouldn't dwell on the negative. Overall, this is a strong sampler of Goldsmith's variety. There are plenty of quality performances here, and despite a few omissions (noticeably Planet of the Apes)this is a very good release from Silva.

4 out of 5 stars Jerry Goldsmith - 40 years of pleasure.......2006-02-22

It was wonderful to hear Mr. Goldsmith's music that went all the way back to The Man from UNCLE, The Waltons, Dr Kildare, etc. And then to hear his music up to the present. The man was a genius!

4 out of 5 stars Almost the perfect compilation.......2005-12-31

Age has its value.... This sweeping collection of compositions brings back so many great memories. This collection shows how significant Goldsmith was for both the movie screen and the small screen. With such a grand collection, every reader can be assured that at least one movie or TV program they like or remember had Goldsmith's contribution. It was an amazing life and the collection well worth having.

However, as sweepig as it is, there are a few holes in the selection. "First Contact", one of the sweetest and richest compositions from the Star Trek is absent. "The Ghost and the Darkness" is missing and the "Medicine Man" music should include the theme song. By dwelling on several selections from the Blue Max, these were squeezed out. Three full and important movie themes got the axe.

However, all but "The Ghost and the Darkness" are readily available and not overly expensive as is the "Ghost" CD. This is a must have for the TV and movie music fan.

Before there was Hans Solo there was Napolean Solo, before ER there was Dr. Kildare. Jerry Goldsmith IS Sci-Fi. "Resistance is futile.. you MUST assimilate this CD collection."

5 out of 5 stars "performances light up the heavens ~ Crouch End Festival Chorus".......2005-06-25

This reissue originally released in 1997 was on the top American Billboard Charts, ranked number #13...dramantic in every respect "CINEMA CHORAL CLASSICS", featuring the CROUCH END FESTIVAL CHORUS and their leader David Temple (Choir Master), world renown with a strong reputation for hitting the mark everytime...for additional listening pleasure THE CITY OF PRAGUE PHILHARMONIC, conducted by Paul Bateman, Kenneth Alwyn and as always Nic Raine these gentleman are the icing on the cake...for additional listening pleasure we have the classical favorite "CARMINA BURANA"(1981-Carl Orff), the dark tale of Camelot...now that's just for openers.

Silva Screen Records takes us on a journey of adventure "CONAN:THE BARBARIAN"(1981-Basil Poledouris), with Arnold Schwarzenegger and resounding singers with brilliant orchestration...then we have two selections from "THE MISSION"(1986-Enno Morricone), beautiful choir blends emotion, enhanced by haunting themes and counter melodies..."THE LION IN WINTER"(1988-John Barry), a favorite among Barry fans, this arrangement and rendition has it all...next we travel with helmet in hand(with horns included) with "THE VIKINGS"(1959-Mario Nascimbene), if it's action you crave, then this Kirk Douglas epic is a real winner, but Nascimbene's score adds color and breaths life into this tale of the Viking God "Odin"...another remake leaps to the screen with "HENRY V"(1989-Patrick Doyle), one can only marvel at Kenneth Branagh's Shakespeare film, but the music from a solo to full choir gives you goose bumps...the CD is excellent, recorded in Dolby Surround sound is completely mesmerizing and outstanding...orchestration, every intstument, every voice, crystal clear...for all the "film-score-buffs", do not pass this one up...needs to be in your every growing collection (nuff said)...gotta love it!

Hats off to Kenneth Alwyn, Paul Bateman and Nic Raine conducting the world renown CITY OF PRAGUE PHILHARMONIC ORCHESTRA...plus James Fitzpatrick(album producer)...Reynold da silva(executive producer)...and a special thanks to David Temple(Choir Master) and our favorite-dynamic choir that made all of this possible...THE CROUCH END FESTIVAL CHORUS!

5 out of 5 stars 4-4-5.......2006-06-11

I can think of no better way of dispelling any bad vibes incurred by Fox's execrable remake of 'The Omen' than returning to Jerry Goldsmith's superlative original scores.

THE OMEN: Oscar winning, Ave Santani is the biggy (if shorty.) The rest gets old quickly and the chanting fits better in context of the film, a drawback with a lot of soundtrack releases.

DAMIEN: OMEN 2: I've always wanted to get my hands on the main theme of this, with it's frog chorus backing (at least that's what I always called it. Don't go near the pond!) The rest as above works better watching the film.

THE FINAL CONFLICT: Considering the brief, the composer may be forgiven for writing a sweeping, biblical score more fitting to an old sword and sandals epic rather than the dour and cheap knock-off in which it appeared so incongruous. Although it unbalanced the movie, it stands out the best as a stand-alone piece and is arguably the masterpiece of the three. A portentous classic.

5 out of 5 stars A really nice Cd to scare the American Idol fools........2005-10-21

This box set is really great. Every song from the first track on disc one, to the last track on disc 3 is really good to listen to.

I have a story to tell you.
I invited American Idol singers Kelly Clarkson and Fantasia Barino over to my house for dinner. Needless to say, I didn't like them at all. I asked them what music they'd like to listen to, and Kelly Clarkson said, "Breakaway," and Fantasia said, "Free Yourself." I said,"Alright, here we go." We were all in agreement, and so I went to play the Cd of their choice. However, I came up with a really, really nasty plan. I wasn't going to fall for them one single bit! So, I planned to do my own desires. As a result, I got this box set, and I decided which of the Cd's I should play. It was then that I made a choice. I decided to play the first Omen Cd.

Boy oh boy, it was absolutely wonderful. When I played the first Cd for the two idols, I couldn't resist going along with the music. When the first track began, both Kelly and Fantasia started to cry. As the Cd progressed, the music was just too much for them to endure. They screamed, cried out, begging for the music to end, but I ignored them. Letting the music do it's work. I also couldn't resist laughing at their tearful begging for mercy. The song "Killer Storm" was when it became too much for these idol fools. By the end of the track called, "The Alter," both of them were screaming and crying so much, that they both had to be carried off to mental institutions to die.

To make a long story short, I also did the same thing to Simon Cowell, and Paula Abdul. This time I played the second disc, and the same thing happened to them, and I said, "That's what you get for judging non-talented fools, and destroying music." When I said those things, I proceeded to take a whip and flog them until they couldn't stand it any onger. If this Cd set is what you want to use to punish those American Idol fools like I did, then this Cd is for you. Ave Satani, versus christus, Ave Satani. Buy this(...) if you dare.

Jerry Goldsmith's chilling soundtrack music for Richard Donner's 1976 Antichrist-themed thriller The Omen was very nearly the score that never was; an unusual, last-minute budget extension was granted solely to secure the composer's services. That decision turned out to be one of the wisest the studio could make. Goldsmith's music would go on to score him his first Oscar ® and a Grammy award and become the crucial thematic glue that held the entire Omen trilogy together. Standing the traditional requiem form on its head, Goldsmith in essence created Satanic liturgical music. As chorally ominous as Orff's Carmina Burana, yet infused with the composer's own compelling sense of drama and color, The Omen instantly became both a genre classic and one of the musician's greatest achievements. Varese's 25th anniversary edition has largely resequenced the track order to match the film and expanded it by nearly a third with seven previously unreleased cues. These new tracks add dimensions of both pastoral calm and mounting suspense, making the familiar "Ave Satani" theme even darker and more spine tingling by contrast. Edition producer Robert Townson's detailed new notes also carefully place each cue in its cinematic and musical context. --Jerry McCulley

5 out of 5 stars THE SOUNDTRACK OF NIGHTMARES.......2007-05-29

This CD should come with a DISCLAIMER!

Without exception, this is the most chilling, soul shattering, truly, deeply, profoundly disturbing musical composition ever written. What an ordeal to subject one's nerves to!

"Ave Satani" must have shocked the hell out of the audience when they performed it at the Academy Awards! And, as a previous reviewer very astutely noted, every single note of this score deserved the Academy Award.

And for the benefit of those of you unfamiliar with Latin:

Sanquis bibimus, Corpus edimus
Prode corpus Satani
Ave, Ave Versus Christus
Ave, Ave Satanti

We drink blood, We eat flesh
Bring forth the body of Satan
Hail Antichrist
Hail Satan

The other version runs:

Sanquis Vivimus, Corpus venimus
Prode Cantus Satani

Blood, we are alive, Body we are coming
Sing forth the incantation of Satan

[There are differing schools of thought as to what the actual Latin text is -one concert version actually exchanged "versus Christus" with "Jesu Christus"!]

Musically powerful and very effective, the score is one of the most original and polished ever written for a film -or the concert hall. It's essentially a chamber piece for small orchestra and mixed chorus, though recent recordings have used larger orchestras and even more varied vocal arrangements.

This newly remastered and restored version is a prized addition to any film music collection.

. . . this is the most frightening, superlative music ever written for a film.

Far, far better then the remakes soundtrack. This one still gives me chills up and down my spine! The new one, PU!

5 out of 5 stars The Omen; orchestral score.......2005-10-24

If you are looking for really dark satanic orchestra music, you found it. Lots of choral chanting by deep voices and women vocals too. I loved the score for "Bless the Child" and then I found this. Can not say enough good things about this. The song at the end has vocals and was not used in the movie. It sucks, but it is thankfully the last track so in no way should that stop you from buying this score

5 out of 5 stars Hauntingly Chilling, and Perfectly Composed.......2004-08-10

I am a huge fan of Jerry Goldsmith, but the undeniably most impactive score that I've ever heard under his name is this CD.
The 1976 success of Richard Donner's masterpeice is without a doubt 86% due to Jerry Goldsmith's requiem-stylized suites.

The tracks that stand out in this lister's brain are "Ave Satani," (once you hear in on the movie track, it will be instantly engraved in your mind.) "The Dog's Attack," enormously beacuse, when I hear it, my mood changes--as does with any music I listen to) and, course, who can forget the pressing motif in "the Altar" (I love it, and so will you.)

So, if your looking to listen to a killer score that will blow you out of your seat, slip this sweet little CD in and prepare yutrself for this beautifully remastered 25th Anniversary Edition of Jerry Goldsmith score to one of the most memmorable films of our time--THE OMEN

How to scare the bejesus out of yourself: spend an evening alone, lock the doors, turn off the lights, and play this CD. At the very least, the sudden twists and turns of dynamics and mood will cause some startled jumps, but there's more to Jerry Goldsmith's score than chilling effects. With help from orchestrator Arthur Morton, Goldsmith uses splashes of sound to great effect, bending pitches and inserting bursts of atonality until even the cheerful sections (very few) sound spooky. This soundtrack, which won Goldsmith an Oscar for Best Original Score in 1976, plays an enormous role in setting the tone for the classic horror film about an ordinary couple who unwittingly adopt the Antichrist. --Genevieve Williams

The end of the movie. Who won? Good? or Evil? You decide.

One thing is for sure. This CD is definitely a winner

5 out of 5 stars Hail Goldsmith!.......2001-10-27

This reissue of the original soundtrack release is missing a great deal of the score, so it only gives the listener an idea of what Goldsmith did for the film. Nonetheless the score is justified in its Academy Award win (although Goldsmith himself dismissed the thought of even getting a nomination for work on a "horror show"), and is the respected composer's only one to date (now that is a crime). Dark, haunting, frightening, and only lightened with soft tones on a few of the spare tracks, this version may become the odd disc out now that a Deluxe Edition has been released, but collectors and Goldsmith addicts may want it anyway. An essential score to have in any score library.

Words of Jerry Goldsmith while writing the score, and the perfect thought it was. This is my second Goldsmith score after The Secret of N.I.M.H. It took me a while to get this soundtrack, but after seeing the movie four times then I couldn't resist. My favorite tracks are 3, 5, 8, and 10. There the ones with the most tension in the music. I was dissapointed about one thing though. The soundtrack didn't have the music of when Damien flips out just from the sight of the church. That music was one of the best parts in the film. A soundtrack I'm also trying to get by Jerry is Psycho II, but it's impossible to find. Jerry makes some of the best horror music ever. It's sad that he hasn't gotten more academy awards instead of just one for this score. Lionel Newman brings out all the tempoes just right in the music that it almost sounds like Jerry is conducting. I hope someday they give a full version of the score.

4 out of 5 stars Lots to listen to........2005-12-04

I am 10 years old and I really like this Cd becsuse there are lots of different of types of orchestral music. There are cheerful tunes, fast exciting stuff as well as the loud spooky tunes I'm not keen on.

2 out of 5 stars Terrible Performances.......2004-09-27

The orchestra is strident, the surround sound flawed and distorted, and the performances force and lacking in cultural understanding of the music.

Changes have been made in the orchestration (where did they get some of these?). Further, the quality of the musicians, particularly the brass, is so compromised as to do Goldsmith's superior music an injustice.

4 out of 5 stars Review by Steven McDonald.......2002-07-21

It's truly impossible to cover all the facets of Jerry Goldsmith's career as a composer for film, even on a packed double-CD set such as this. The COPP, under the baton of Nic Raine, give it their best shot, however, including music from Masada, The Blue Max, and Star Trek: The Motion Picture along the way. The performances are dynamic, with good orchestrations that play to the writing, rather than to the effect of having a large orchestra on hand. The discs are High Density Compatible Digital encoded and the mix is Dolby Surround, so you can expect a musical spectacle.

5 out of 5 stars Excellent Goldsmith sampler/overview.......2002-03-04

There was a time when I'd avoid these sorts of compliations like the plague. Generally speaking, they were inferior recordings done by orchestras that sounded like they belonged in a school's band-room rather than a recording studio. Silva America has changed that opinion; I've yet to buy one their discs that has dissapointed with the quality of the music and orchestrations.

This two-disc sampler of Goldsmith features recordings of some of his best-known works and a range of lesser-known but equally worthwhile themes. For me, a definate seller was the presence of the main themes from "Masada" "Under Fire" and "Twilight Zone: the Movie." If they'd included the "Gremlins" theme, I would have been as happy as can be, because I would have had my favorite hard-to-find Goldsmith music all in one spot!

If there's one thing lacking here, it's that none of the selections clearly show the magic that Goldsmith is able to work with an orchestra's percussion session, nor the unique sounds he creates when pairing ethnic instruments with traditional western orchestra instruments.

Still, those are minor gripes in the light of the excellent quality of the performances found here.

2 out of 5 stars Not the soundtracks.......2001-12-06

Goldsmith is great, of course, but be warned: this is not a collection of his soundtracks, as advertised. It's an "interpretation" (according to the liner notes) by a Czeckoslovakian orchestra. Not a bad orchestra, all in all-- but just know this CD is not what it appears.

4 out of 5 stars Frijid Pink - 'Earth Omen' (Repertoire).......2006-12-30

Originally released in 1973, this was the band's third lp and nearly as good as their previous two, their self-titled debut and 'Defrosted' (see my reviews of both). I've heard a few others say this record number three is boring, but I disagree with that. Still good psychedelia. Most notable tracks are the full-speed-ahead rocker "Sailor",title cut "Earth Omen","Lazy Day"(good guitar work)and "Rainbow Rider". Comes with two added bonus tracks. Alright!

3 out of 5 stars Typical 70's cd........2005-05-16

Not horrible, but nothing like there first album. Almost completely different lineup. If you like a band such as sugarloaf you may like this one. Very similiar.

2 out of 5 stars The Facts.......2002-08-08

This work was recorded at Eastern Sound in Toronto under the worst of creative conditions, produced by Vinnie Testa who's only claim to fame was supposedly being aquainted with Shadow Morton who produced the Fudge. The album was released on MGM Lion and followed the release of the single Lost Son which was a London Parrot single. Now the facts:Earth Omen,New Horizon and Lost Son were in truth composed as a trilogy by Jon Wearing who had been working with another Michigan artist and associate Dick Wagner after the demise of the Frost.Wagner went on to form Ursa Major and Wearing who had been working in the Detroit music scene since 1966 with the Tidalwaves and had a hit Farmer John signed with Pink with the agreement for the first work 20% of his writing would be distributed equally among the other members of the band who were totally lost and down and out. Testa and Wearing could never see eye to eye, the management had no idea what they were doing, IRS and legal issues and the entire project was a wash and Wearing left to form a very good R&B influenced rock band called Deluxe. Deluxe toured with Joe Walsh, James Cotton, Atlanta Rhythm Section, opened for Seger and many others.Dallas Hodge,Ray Craig,KimballLee,Greg Caulder and Wearing comprised the band that had been targeted by Epic to sign. Leo Fenn part of the Alice Cooper business organization and Wearing pal was the manager until heads got out of control in part do to Johnny Winter's medling and then John Sinclair became the manager and demise of this fine act. Hodge continues to work with Canned Heat overseas and Wearing still provides moments with the Detroit based Ghostband.Wearing attempted to provide some quality to Pink however was stiffled by the mis-management of Clyde Stevers and Marv Wilson. Enough for now, The Truth.

5 out of 5 stars My favorite Frijid Pink recording.......2001-07-21

I am a big fan of this group and this is my favorite recording of theirs. Actually 2 original members were on this recording, Rick Stevers and Tom Harris, who was never credited on the first two albums. The title song "Earth Omen" was a timely song about pollution concerns and respect for the planet. "Lazy Day" is a wonderful song about being home with the folks you love. "Sailor" is also a great tune. It is a shame this album wasn't more commercially successful at the time it was released. The musicans on this CD were obviously very talented. It may be a bit of a departure for those we are big fans of the "Frijid Pink" and "Defrosted" albums, but it is surely a worthwhile effort.

4 out of 5 stars These are the seventies ... pure!.......1999-02-24

Although not recorded by the original line up (only drummer Stevers remained on this one) it's a typical 70's record, with all there has to be. I especially like "Lazy Day" and "Mr. Blood" although the latter has a rather sudden end. I assume the lyrics are quite pretentious, but who cares as long as the music rocks! Cool stuff worth checking out!

How does one begin to describe a voice as beautiful as Anisa Romero's? Haunting, lush, stirring...the adjectives keep pouring out. Easily the most expressive and talented vocalist I have ever heard. Couple that with the gorgeous audio landscape that Jeff Greinke has built for each song and you have an album that is more than music...it is a sensory journey. Put it on, dim the lights, close your eyes, and bask in the glory.

5 out of 5 stars The Omen.....Maybe he got the job because of Jerry.......2006-08-26

The Omen was a masterpiece in it self with its haunting chorus and strings. But with the new year comes The Omen remake. I dont know if its just me but I loved the movie. Maybe its because Liev Shruber looked cool. And the movie just felt cool when you saw it. Ironic how jerry Goldsmith scores the original and Marco Beltrami scores the remake. But none the less it was a good move.
The Omen Main Titles starts the score of great with a dark forboding yet paced and loud. I also like the touch with the Takio drums. The Adoption Is a good track with an old theme poping up in this track. Ambassador Gets Fired Is a track with the fun of Hellboy. New House / Damien's Deliverance is a good track but you might not be replaying it on your stereo loud.
The Nanny's Noose soft but dark piano dominates this track with Orchestra backing it. A Cross To Bear another track that makes me thing of hellboy. Ms. Baylock another track that has piano dominating it with Strings backing.Damien's Tantrum love this track same with the track More Tantrums. Kate Doubts sad piano with orchestra backing in this track. Scooter is one of may favoriote tracks now this starts of slow and picks up pace. This has to be one of the track you pump your stereo up and bop your head to it. This will get the repeat treatment. Don't Let Him Kill Me and On The Heels Of Spiletto now things start to get tense ans the orchestra strings can be heard just becoming more tense as you move through the tracks. Dogs In The Cemetery this track is nuts. more action and takio dominates this piece. This will get the repeat treatment. Drive To Bugenhagen I like this track because of the use of middle eastern instrumentaion. Dirty Deeds this track is great I love the action, the tenseness,(If thats a word) The scareiness. You bought the soundtrack but you will be coming back to the last 4 tracks which are the best out of the album. Altar Of Sacrifice this is just a crazy action piece. I love it fast strings, brass, precussion all the good stuff. The Funeral every one knows this track. so you know what to expect for an ambassator. Boy Genius same as the main titles except better, louder, and with a chours. Omen 76/06* do i really need to tell you what to expect in this track. Its the Jerry Goldsmith theme with a beefed up Orchestra.

Its is a must buy and most of the tracks will get the reapeat treament so pick it up when you get the chance.

5 out of 5 stars OUTSTANDING SCORE!.......2006-08-13

It's understandable why some cannot adapt to this soundtrack. After all, it seems that almost NOTHING can replace the original Jerry Goldsmith score. But with all due respect, the composer is long gone, so all we can do is cope with whatever we've got left. Fortunately, Marco Beltrami (who was taught by famous composer, Goldsmith) decided to helm the score for this 2006 remake of the 1976 film, "The Omen". While some of the music isn't as gothic as the original, it still delivers just as much (if not more) as Goldsmith's score! Therefore, 'Omen' and horror fans alike should not dismiss it entirely!

Some of the best tracks include: Damien's Tantrum, Scooter, Dogs in the Cemetery, Altar of Sacrifice, and Omen 76/06 (a nicely done re-recording of the original 1976 theme)! After watching the movie and hearing its dark and aggressive score at certain scenes, it instantly kept me at the edge of my seat and sent shivers down my spine! Not too long after, I just HAD to buy the soundtrack! I wasn't in any way disappointed! Without question, this is one of the greatest scores of all time, and it's nice that the majority of the work is original and NOT some song(s) ripped from some random band (like what most movie soundtracks do). I highly recommend this score, as long as you're one of those who can keep an open mind. After all, it IS dedicated to Mr. Goldsmith HIMSELF! With that kept in mind, this is a MUST HAVE!!

4 out of 5 stars "The Omen" is taken in a very different direction..............2006-06-22

Beltrami has been given some BIG shoes to fill. I've always been an admirer of Jerry's original score, and the revolution in horror scoring that it spawned, so my expectations for this new "reincarnation" were pretty high. I must admit that Beltrami has risen to the occasion, but this is not to say that it is an exceptional score.
It's clear from the outset that Beltrami has given this score his own compositional style, mainly in the way he uses percussion and his choices in orchestration and instrumentation. One reviewer mentioned that Beltrami's "Omen" is the serious side of his previous score for "Hellboy" and to be honest, I'm inclined to agree. Much of the action material from that score is given similar treatment here, only without the obvious comic book flair. The softer moments of "Omen" have some very nice writing at times, often with gentle piano or Beltrami's good use of woodwinds.
One major aspect of the score that I think detracts from its merit greatly is the lack of a significant tie to the religious themes of the film. This pseudo-religious scoring is what gave Jerry's original its appeal and I was suprised to hear so little of it here. Beltrami was given a wonderful choir, heard in full in the last track but only a little elsewhere in the score.
As a stand-alone horror score, it's very effective: his rhythmic and percussive writing suits the genre very well, and we hear a lot of that here (i.e.-in the opening track). However, there are times when the score doesn't lend well to its own seriousness and I really felt that this tended to take the music from "Omen" to another typical "slasher" flick. In my opinion, this arises from the same lack of a religious musical tone (just my opinion!) On a more positive note, he uses Jerry's original material to a good effect, just enough to give flavor while putting his own unique touch to the score.
Overall, Beltrami's score for the new "Omen" is a good one: an entertaining listen, although one that I probably won't have in my player as often. In reality this score will probably live out its days in the shadow of its predecessor, however there are very good bits to be found here and any fan of Beltrami's work on previous scores for this genre should try it.

5 out of 5 stars Beltrami delivers a worthy send-up to Goldsmith's classic........2006-06-21

While not as gothic as Jerry Goldsmith's classic score to the original, Beltrami still delivers a sinister and rhytmic score that greatly enhances the atmosphere of the movie. Goldsmith's "Piper Theme" is quoted a few times, and although he uses fewer vocals than Goldsmith, they are used to chilling effect. The voices are disembodied and quiet, as if the very Devil himself is speaking.

Most of the criticism towards this score seems to be that it isn't Goldsmith. Well, of course it isn't because he's dead! And quite frankly, his score would seem a bit cheesey in a modern film. Give Beltrami a chance and I think you'll enjoy it.

5 out of 5 stars Beltrami's Omen Pleases..........2006-06-19

With all due respect to the Goldsmith purists worldwide (and to the composer himself), the maestro is DEAD. His extraordinary and music for the Omen trilogy is LEGENDARY. It is the ultimate template for a horror film score. Having said that, Beltrami's music for the remake is simply exquisite. It succeeds for the most part, because it is not simply an extension of Goldsmith's material, but a genuine hommage to the spirit of the maestro's work. Beltrami's Omen is a rich and vibrant score, with a wealth of thematic material that is expertly crafted. I also appreciate that Beltrami's score is not obvious or contrived -- the music flows with a sense of assuredness unlike anything I've heard from Beltrami previously, and is the staple of an outstanding horror score. A strong (and moving) central theme, combined with a frantic sense of desperation makes Beltrami's Omen a WORTHY entry into the realm of great horror film scores.
