This got "Swept Away" once but not this time on CD.......2007-06-28

As the author of the Jefferson Airplane book "Take Me To A Circus Tent" and a former radio disc-jockey, I am often asked to write and or discuss various recordings from the 60's and 70's.

To most, Steve Hunter is in the shadows. If you saw him down the street, he could be the new neighbor, the local deliveryman, or an executive at a Fortune 500 company. In the rock and roll world, Hunter is never in a shadow. He is a well-known entity for his resume and compatibility with any level of musician.

He's played with Mitch Ryder, Alice Cooper, Lou Reed, Peter Gabriel, and Jack Bruce. That doesn't even scratch the surface of his time in the studio as a session player.

In 1977, Hunter released a solo record "Swept Away" with some of the most diverse rock and roll heard during that year and artistically impressive cover versions of some extraordinary tunes.

The opening track is his tremendous rendition of the Byrds tune "Eight Miles High." Flavored here as an instrumental the first words are always "This is fabulous. Who is this guy."

Hunter puts the blues hat on for the traditional "Goin Down" and here is an example of his superlative ability. It is one thing to have far reaching musical tastes and to record the proper renditions, but Hunter has every last detail down to a science. The sound of the guitar is in perfect harmony with the lineage of the song.

"Sail On Sailor" is the song the Beach Boys recorded and issued the definitive version. Hunter composed a four and one half minute gem of a cover tune resulting in pure beauty.

"Jasper St. Viaduct Citar Rag" sounds as if Jorma Kaukonen from the Jefferson Airplane/Hot Tuna is dictating the structure of the tune. The way Hunter makes every note resonate and have meaning further solidifies this release as a hidden treasure. This is one of his own compositions.

"Deep Blue" another Hunter penned song has the earmarks of a George Harrison solo tune. Hunter puts the listener in a relaxed mode as the tenth and final selection of the album comes our way.

If the drums appear to enhance the material, you can thank Steve for selecting Jim Gordon. A few of his credits include the Beach Boys, Monkees, John Lennon, Traffic, Eric Clapton, and George Harrison all before 1974!!

OBSCURE CLASSIC RE-ISSUED.......2007-01-12

If you like blues-based guitarists, you are probably already familiar with the guy who was known as one of the most influential players of the '70s. He worked with Jack Bruce and Mitch Ryder before becoming famous for his "Intro" on Lou Reed's live Rock-n-Roll Animal album. The twin lead guitars of Steve Hunter and Dick Wagner brought tasteful, fluid melody and scorchingly soaring solos to Reed's otherwise spartan tunes. Lou Reed Live was also taken from the same concert as Rock-n-Roll Animal and has the same energy and inspired performances by the same band that later went on to tour and record with Alice Cooper in the mid to late '70s. If you like the lead guitar from Aerosmith's Train Kept-a-Rollin from the Get Your Wings album, that is Steve Hunter playing in an un-credited performance. Steve Hunter plays brilliantly but he's not the kind of guy who jumps around the stage. He's all about the music and this album, Swept Away was his first solo effort. Its mostly electric with Steve's beautifully crafted solos soaring above the solid rhythm section of Jim Gordon on drums, Jim Maelen on percussion, Prakash John on bass and Josef Chirowski and Bob Ezrin contributing on keyboards The title tune has a jazzy feel with sort of a Brazilian bossa nova rhythm. Eight Miles High is an instrumental version of the Byrds' hit with a rocking beat and Steve wailing with his tasteful phrasing and beautiful tone. Check out a tune called Sea Sonata. Steve builds the composition with the prettiest leads that culminate in a brilliant solo at the end that'll put chills on your spine. His version of the Beach Boys" Sail on Sailor" is the best version you'll ever hear of that song...his blues playing embellishes that number so tastefully and the only vocals are at the chorus. Its perfectly executed. Deep Blue is an artfully atmospheric piece and Rubber Man has a funky feel.
Eldorado Street is also a favorite of mine. What more can I say? I bought this album on vinyl back in '77 and its pretty worn out. I was delighted to find it available on cd.

Whirligig.......2006-05-24

Yesirree, this one's a keeper. Mostly instrumental (two vocal tracks, actually), it's quite eclectic and (almost) everything works. "Goin' Down" and "Sea Sonata" are marred only slightly by Mr. Hunter's somewhat wobbly vocals. He tries so hard to sound authentically country/blues on the former that it sounds like satire - - which for all I can tell, it is. Hunter's pounding take on "Eight Miles High" owes less to the Byrds than it does to, say, contemporary Deep Purple and he makes it his own, all right - - heck, the guy had played with everyone from Alice Cooper to Lou Reed by this time and he was headed for, among others, Peter Gabriel. Ditto for "Sail On, Sailor"; it's as atmospheric a tribute as you could hope for, and has a swagger that the original only hinted at. (And omitting the word "sailor" from the refrain is sort of a musical nudge-wink.) The brief quote from "My Favorute Things" in "Rubber Man" is cute, too. Other standouts: the wide-screen, cinematic "Eldorado Street", the airy title track and the beautiful closer, "Deep Blue". Yes, the titles are evocative - - and the music lives right up to them. Bob Ezrin's beefy production doesn't hurt, either.

Long Overdue Diamond in the Rough.......2005-04-14

I have a badly worn vinyl copy of this album. I pulled it out a year or so ago and transferred it to digital, thinking I would never see it on CD. Miracles never cease.

This was an album I liked the first time I heard it in 1977. The playing is smooth and the music is geniunely interesting. Hunter is probably a better guitar player than he is a singer, but even the singing isn't bad on this album.

Check out the high energy of Eight Miles High, the lead tune. Spectacular! What was side 2 of the vinyl album begins with Jasper St. Viaduct Guitar Rag. It is followed by a great version of Sail on Sailor. The rest of side 2 rolls along effortlessly, stitched together with artistic transitions and great playing.

It's amazing to see what some of the smaller labels are reissuing these days. This is a diamond in the rough. Order it today.

Finally on CD.......2004-06-16

Steve Hunter is a master rock and blues guitarist. I bought this vinyl album back in 1975. It has always been one of my favorites. This CD includes many diverse musical styles and it's all high quality. The audio production throughout is wide open and the ambiance on the song, Swept Away, is rich. If you appreciate fine guitar playing - get this CD.

Still the Boss.......2005-09-20

Swept Away stands the test of time. Great songs, including the wonderful ballad 'All of You'. So glad this LP was put on a CD.

REISSUED, BUT NOT REMASTERED.......2005-04-02

I have the original RCA release of this CD (long out of print but I bought a used one on ebay a few years ago).

As soon as I saw that it was being re-issued, I thought finally a remasterd version would sound so much better. While EMI may have done a little bit of digital remastering I doubt they used the original master tapes because this reissue only sounds slightly better than the old RCA version. The sound level is still very low, the highs are harsh and the bass is very weak.

Even the CD itself still has a date on it of 1984, and the CD is still made the way they were in the early days - no silkscreen top coat, just plain laquer (CD's are more susceptable to scratching this way).

The song Swept Away is one of my favorites by Ross and of that style of dance music from the early 80's. I guess I'll just have to wait to see if EMI or RCA or someone else will ever remaster from the original tapes this CD or at least the album version of Swept Away.

diana sweeps you away.......2005-03-24

this is another DIANA ROSS rca product and one of her best along with the RED HOT AND BLUES CD.on this outing DIANA leaves most of the producing to other people which in this case makes a better album.Not only does this lp feature classic Ross hits such as MISSING YOU,SWEPT AWAY, and the r@b hitTELEPHONE but the album eases along with some great lp cuts and strong vocals by ross such as NOBODY DRIVES ME CRAZY LIKE YOU,ITS YOUR MOVE,FOREVER YOUNG and the uk hit TOUCH BY TOUCH.only one down fall is the inclusion of WE ARE THE CHILDREN OF THE WORLD,instead of the lost track FIGHT FOR IT.This track would have made the lp more urban.Ross also does a good job on a cover RESCUE ME,and after hearing it you forget who originally sang it.The CHILDREN OF THE WORLD is a bit weak and rather schmaltzy.Diana has never been either.9 out 10 tracks are ross classics.one of her best.check out RED HOT AND BLUE cd.

1984 studio album.......2005-02-10

Diana Ross' recording career had hit the rocks in 1983 with the dismal sales of what is still easily her worst ever studio project, Ross (1983). Prior to Ross (1983) Ross had recorded the dreary, mish-mash Silk Electric (1982) which though successful commercially (becoming a Gold seller) contained none of the fire and soulful edge that had made so many of her Motown records so magical.

That changed in 1984 when Ross returned with what was at the time her best album yet for RCA Records. The project, titled Swept Away (1984),was perharps more successful in that Ross didn't try so hard to escape and shake off the style that had made her famous as she blatantly did on the experimental albums Silk Electric (1982) and Ross (1983). There were indeed some diverse experiments on Ross' part on Swept Away but no musical style was over-done and over-all Ross carries the whole Swept Away album off with ease, style and finesse.

Swept Aways' first single would be one of her all-time great ballads Missing You. That year, tragedy struck when the genius soul superstar Marvin Gaye was shot dead by his estranged father following a heated argument between the two. Written by the great Lionel Richie, Missing You was a moving and powerful tribute to the late legend who Ross had recorded a succesful and now classic album of love duets with in 1973 (see separate review for the Diana And Marvin album). Ross' emotions are evidently stirred up as she sings those strongly emotive lyrics and she sounds stunning as the track builds up to its dazzling crescendo.

Missing You flew straight into the U.S Top 10 charts and perharps was so successful in that it reflected her glorious Motown past. Missing You is indeed a classic Diana Ross ballad though oddly enough the song completely bombed in the U.K despite several re-promotions and a moving video that featured footage of Ross on stage with Marvin Gaye as well as other footage of the late Florence Ballad (founder of The Supremes who was fired from the group in 1967 and tragically died a penniless alcoholic in 1976 at the age of 32), Paul Williams of The Temptations (who shot himself in the head after having been distraught over poor finances and ill health) and a still of Ross' mother Ernestine who had died that year of cancer. Ross' performance on Missing You really gets to you and this was quite possibly her greatest recording for RCA Records.

The exotic, Caribean feel on the fun, bouncy Touch By Touch, features a vibrant, refreshing and even a little angelic (she was 39 at the time of recording this project) performance from Ross. This atmospheric, happy go-lucky number was lifted as a single where it surprisingly struggled into the lower reaches of the U.K Top 50 (but enjoyed some success in some parts of Europe).

Ross delivers a riveting vocal performance on her impeccable updating of the old Fontella bass classic Rescue Me. More routine and familiar were the smooth, lush arrangements on the yearning ballad It's Your Move which Ross still carries off with a lot of spark therefore deeming it compelling.

One of the more diverting experiments came with the stormy, atmospheric title track, Swept Away. This powerful number is complimented by a firm, razor-sharp performance from Ross who seamlessly surfboards along the tidal wave of musical arrangements that contains echoey, crashing sound effects at the exalting bridge of the song. Swept Away quickly raced into the American Top 20 charts, stopping at No.19.

Bernard Edwards, one half of the famous 70's disco group Chic, and who had co-produced the riotously funky masterpiece diana (1980) album (a landmark in Ross' career) wrote Telephone for the Swept Away project which was belatedly released as an American single in 1985 (though got nowhere!). This soft-funk number, complete with swirling, atmospheric arrangements and a highly effective breathy, seamless performance from Ross, had the potential to have been a reasonably sized hit had it been promoted far better than it actually ever was.

Ross takes a hesitant step into the growing electro-pop market on the startling Nobody Makes Me Crazy Like You Do. This was an interesting, if not entirley succesful experiment that hit the times well (though inevitably sounds dated now years later).

Ross' duets with the likes of Marvin Gaye and Lionel Richie had proved phenomenal and her gorgeous duet with Latin singer Julio Igelias was no exception. The mesmerising All Of You featured two charismatic and divinely sensual performances from Ross and Igslias who sound perfectly compatable when captured together on record. Rumours circulated around at the time that Ross and Igelias were romantically involved but this was nothing but fabrication on the medias' part. Ross and Igelias enjoyed a close friendship at a point and following the loss of her mother a distraught Ross took herself and her three children to stay with Igelias at his home at Christmas in 1984. Their timeless duet All Of You was another U.S Top 20 smash hit whilst faltering within the lower reaches of the U.K Top 50.

The almost ghastly We Are The Children Of The World is the albums only real throw-away track but one of the ultimate highlights is Ross' soaring renedition of Bob Dylans Forever Young. Ross enhances her delicate voice to startling effect on Forever Young delivering a mesmerising, crystal-clear and strong performance.

Swept Away was largely produced by Ross herself with some other contributions from Daryl Hall on that startling title track and Arthur Baker. Swept Away (1984) quickly restored her selling power in the U.S after the low sales for Ross (1983). Swept Away was rapidly certified Gold by the RIAA. In the U.K the album climbed to a moderate No.40 which wasn't bad considering the project hadn't yielded any major hit.

Overall Swept Away is a pleasing effort from the great soul diva and an essential album for Ross fans.


(However what is slightly laughable was the albums black and white cover featuring Ross wearing heavy, gothic-like make-up and sporting a toilet-brush spiked hairdo which was described by one critic for People magazine as Ross looking like "one of those West German postpunkers who do their hair with crazy glue". It was certainly a far cry from that glamorous, elegant lady we all bow down to on stage. It was in the ealy 80's that Ross remarkably went through various manifestations of her own dress sense.)

Diana's last great album.......2004-03-03

I'm buying this CD to replace the LP I bought way back in 1984! I love this album, every track is worth a listen.

"Missing You", the tribute to Marvin Gaye, is the most recognizable track, and I think it hit #1 on the R&B chart. "Swept Away" is upbeat and danceable, you can hear the influence of Darryl Hall. I also really enjoyed "Telephone", it's rather funky. "Forever Young", a torch song ballad, is a nice end to the album.

Wow, this CD brings back memories. I agree with the other reviewer who said this was Diana's last great album. As a lifelong fan of Diana Ross, I readily admit it.

Swept Away About it!.......2003-09-30

The hit title track, makes all the album worth buy in it!, it's a more extended version than the one now included in the only available Greatest Hits RCA Years!. The First Track "Missing You", is a great melancolic ballad, "Touch By Touch" sounds a little to funny to me, not the diva that we are used to; "Rescue Me", is a cover of the Fontella Bass version, is ok, not great, "It's Your Move", is one of the best track of the album, is a kinda sexy track, it doesn't fall in the title of funny sounding song like the above "Touch by..", "Swept Away" well Daryl Hall had it with this song, why it didn't became a top 10 hit, that's a mystery, maybe cuz Radio airplay was mad with Diana parting ways with Motown?, the chorus line that states "No It doesn't matter cuz nothing last forever" it's a timeless state of independence, "Telephone" well to slow for being a song produce by Bernard Edwars(of Chic and one part of the success of "diana"), it's sounds like a filler, and the lyrics only talks about "if you need someone call it on the telephone"? whassup with that?, "Nobody Makes Me Crazy Like You Do" well this track supposed to be danceable, it's sounds kind of robotic, it's not boring but not a classic, "All Of You", song with Julio Iglesias father of course of Enrique!, this song is a total AC classic of the early eighties, although it was an [imitation] of "Endless Love" it didn't achieve the success that EL achieve, the song is produced by Richard Perry(Pointer Sisters)and the lyrics are ok, of course they talk about love, Julio Iglesias voice is better than his son, "We are the children of the world", it's an uplifting song wich for my point of view was a predescesor of "We Are The World" haha, nice for kids parties!?, "Forever Young" deep lyrics written by the one and only Bob Dylan, this should have been a great AC release but I guess Diana didn't want it, in conclution, "Swept Away", pick the pieces up where "Ross" 1983 left all, although it didn't make a great stament in music like "diana" in 1980 did, "Swept Away" had enough energy to be certified "Gold", and consider the last commercial success in the USA for Miss Ross. Both the album should be consider halp Upbeat, half Ballads, a great convination that some divas of today don't seem to capture.

Swept Away nothing last forever.......2003-03-25

Swept Away was Diana's last successful commercial release in the U.S. Swept Away was the beginning of the end of Diana's reign as the boss. All of You with Julio Iglesias was a beautiful ballard that fell short of the success of Endless Love. Swept Away was a powerful track that demonstrated that Ross could keep up with the other divas of the era like Chaka Khan, Evelyn King and Donna Summers. Diana's vocal performance was both passive and powerful and showed sex appeal and strength. Missing You was Ross' last hit and number 1 R&B ballad yet it struggled to maintain the number ten spot on the pop charts a sign that this was the beginning of the end. Other noticeble tracks include Telephone and Touch by Touch. Definitely the last album that was a complete masterpiece by Ross.

Great 80's music!.......2003-03-16

I enjoyed her "My Old Piano", "I'm Coming Out", "Mirror Mirror" stuff. If that is the style of Diana you want to hear, then you will really enjoy this CD."Swept Away" starts it off with a mood that makes you want to move, then "It's your move" makes you nod your head. "Telephone" makes you want to slow dance and "Missing You" is one of those you lip sink to when you are driving and then you look around to see if anyone saw you. I wish this CD was easier to find. The used price is out of line.

Only as good as the movie.......2006-02-25

As the movie is to the Wertmüller original, so this soundtrack's
music pales compared to the beauty of Piccioni's score.
Get the soundtrack of the original film, if you can find it.

Lush and Emotional...A Beauty of a Soundtrack!.......2003-01-03

Michel Colombier's soundtrack to the Guy Ritchie/Madonna collaboration "Swept Away" is absolutely astonishing. Ranging from perky, Greek instruments on tracks like "The Greeks" and "The Gym" to lush and emotional reveries like "Togetherness" and the heartbreaking "Parted." Della Reese's "Come-On-A-My-House" is the only non-instrumental track, and it is simply divine. I have yet to see this film and am highly anticipating it's DVD release. Until then, buy this soundtrack. You won't be disappointed!

Bassist and composer Mary Ann McSweeney's second album as a bandleader is an impressive program of elegant compositions that manage to impress. McSweeney makes interesting instrumental and compositional choices that sometimes skirt the edge of a cloying mysticism, For example, the sitar on her composition "Atheada" is nicely integrated both melodically and texturally into the unique and original sound of the piece itself; her arrangement of sitarist Nana Simopoulos' "Siva's Moon Dance" is also enjoyable. McSweeney's adaptation of an Edvard Grieg piano piece works quite well, though, and her touching song "Swept Away" is beautifully rendered by vocalist Kate McGarry. Disappointing!.......2006-05-12

This CD was released in 1995 and the record company who released it gave me the chance to evaluate it. Laurie Z plays New Age music that will remind you of Yanni. Unfortunately, that's where all the comparisons end. I felt the CD was lethargic and didn't have much punch. It was routine and didn't give me much vibes. There are some moments, though. I enjoyed the track, "My Perfect Love". It displayed her potential with her beautiful acoustic piano playing. But then the rest of her album got too "high tech". I guess you could call it music for the times. It was released more than 10 years ago, so time has not been good to its evolvement. Laurie Z probably has some better CD's out there. Just not this one.

I learned about Laurie Z a number of years ago when she was playing at The South Bay Galleria in Redondo Beach California. She is a gracious and classy lady that plays with great skill, passion and creativity.

"Life Between the Lines" is a must have album. With both classical and new age sounds you will love it.

Laurie Z's Life Between The Lines is one of my all time favorite CD's! I have owned that fabulous piece of work for probably 8 years and I can say it is a "timeless" CD. The variation of songs and the compositiion of each and every one is so beautiful. I never get tired of it.

I have played her music in my clothing stores , sitting down to dinner with friends, planting flowers in my garden, driving in my car. It is a must have CD!

I first discovered Laurie Z.'s music on her solo piano album, "Roots", which I love, and then worked my way backwards to her earlier work. All three albums are very different from each other, but all showcase Laurie's passion and love for what she is doing. An innovator at heart, Laurie is also a master at improvisation who always creates new music in concert from audience members's suggestions for subject and key signature. Always on the move, Laurie tours all over the country doing concerts in halls, clubs, music stores, book stores, and outdoor festivals. For many of these festivals, Laurie performs with her band, and the band is included along with Laurie's assorted synthesizers on "Life Between the Lines".

This CD includes some of my all-time favorite Laurie-tunes - the title song with its classical/rock dichotomy, the tragic "From the Diary of a Redhead", "The Mayan Wavelength", "Trouble in Paradise", "The Time Dance", the funky "A Change of Heart", as well as one of Laurie's signature pieces, "My Perfect Love". This is truly one of my favorite albums and one of my favorite artists!
