5 out of 5 stars remarkable evocation of a bygone style.......2003-07-25

In some ways, Artis Wodehouse's Disklavier realization of Zez Confrey's lighter-than-air pianistic joyrides is an even more impressive accomplishment than her previous restorations of Gershwin and Jelly Roll Morton piano rolls. Confrey's novelty style seems the truest musical embodiment of F. Scott Fitzgerald. It is fascinating to hear the spirit of the 20s come to life in such a nerve titillating way. Especially remarkable are the selections hand played by Ms. Wodehouse into the Disklavier. Though they are designated on the jacket liner notes, by ear it is impossible to tell the difference-- a tribute to the complete success and seamless integrity of her stylistic resurrection.

5 out of 5 stars Wodehouse the magnificent.......2003-04-25

I've heard Artis Wodehouse play in other venues and she is an artist of the most amazing versatility and profound knowledge, not to mention astounding energy. This CD is exciting to listen to, friends play in their workplaces to add zip to life there. It will bring you tremendous enjoyment.

5 out of 5 stars The Rolls Royce of Zez Confrey recordings........2003-04-10

If you already know and enjoy Zez Confrey's music, this disc belongs in your collection. If Confrey is unknown to you, this disc still belongs in your collection, unless of course you find joyful, exuberant piano music to be repugnant.

For those new to Confrey, here's a brief description:

Edward Elzear Confrey (known to all as Zez) was a self-described composer of novelty piano music, his way of trying to describe music that was at once influenced by ragtime, early jazz, popular songs, and classical composers, particularly Debussy and MacDowell. His music rarely if ever aspires to emotional profundity, but its sheer joy, bounce, and tunefulness make it hard to put down once you've started, whether as listener or pianist. As an amateur pianist, I've been playing Zez Confrey's music for 20 years. The reactions I have gotten from people over the years have been consistently the same; "Wow! Who wrote that?", and "Are there recordings of this music I can buy?". Now, this disc gives me an easy answer to the second question.

This disc is Artis Wodehouse's fourth disc devoted to her amazing humanized piano rolls. The first two covered a good cross-section of George Gershwin's piano rolls, while a third was a collection of piano rolls by Jelly Roll Morton. This is easily her finest work since the first "Gershwin plays Gershwin" disc in 1993.

Zez Confrey, like his contemporaries George Gershwin and Jelly Roll Morton, left behind a well-rounded collection of acoustic gramophone recordings as well as paper piano rolls. The least sophisticated of these paper rolls merely captured the notes that the pianist played and nothing more. Once the roll was published and sold, it was the job of the consumer, operating his or her own reproducing piano, to mechanically add pedaling, rubato, and dynamics as he or she saw fit. However, the most sophisticated reproducing rolls captured not only the notes but the pedaling, rubato, and dynamics used by the pianist, often with uncanny accuracy. All paper rolls allowed the pianist the option of post-production editing, e.g., removing wrong notes, and in popular music such as this, adding dazzling "third hand" counterpoint effects that made the end result unplayable by a human pianist. Confrey was one the best at this, and he uses this technique liberally throughout the rolls on this disc. (For those of you familiar with Confrey's "Kitten on the Keys" or "Dizzy Fingers" in their standard published versions, you're in for a treat once you hear Confrey's souped up three-handed versions presented here.) Still, even the best of these paper rolls played back on the best reproducing pianos could never be mistaken by an astute listener for a human being (two-handed or otherwise). There was always a discernible gap between playing produced in the human realm and that of the mechanical realm, that is until relatively recently. The explosion of digital technology has allowed such things as computerized reproducing pianos like the Yamaha Disklavier to become a readily available reality. Recordings made and played back on such pianos are virtually indistinguishable from live human performances. It wasn't long before people like Artis Wodehouse starting exploring ways to apply this technology to the old paper rolls, finally enabling listeners to experience what it might have been like to hear pianists like Gershwin, Morton, and Confrey recorded in the flesh, and in modern sound. By taking the information encoded on these old paper rolls and feeding it into a Yamaha Disklavier system, she has been able narrow the gap between human playing and mechanical playing to the point of near nonexistence. Through careful study of Confrey's actual playing from acoustic recordings, Wodehouse has softened the mechanical edges, painstakingly adding those qualities that distinguished Confrey's playing in the flesh, effectively making each roll indistinguishable from an actual human performance.

On the first Gershwin disc from 1993, several of the rolls she chose had been previously recorded in their original paper roll form. Having heard these original paper roll recordings, listening to Artis Wodehouse's humanized versions of these same rolls was like seeing an old film before and then after restoration. In short, it was a revelation.

This new Zez Confrey disc easily lives up to these high standards Wodehouse set for herself, indeed this disc may even set the bar higher. This time around, not only is Wodehouse working from two different types of paper rolls, she is actually playing some of the pieces herself, works that Confrey did not record, but that deserve a place on any disc of Confrey's music. The joyful bounce and rhythmic snap of her playing so perfectly matches Confrey's own playing that it becomes impossible to tell which tracks are hers and which are Confrey's. The result is an amazingly seamless and unified blend of musicianship, scholarship, technological know-how, with an astute understanding of the individual elements that made Confrey's playing unique. Whether as pianist or digital editor, with this CD, Wodehouse has done more for Confrey's music than has anyone before her. The results are well worth hearing.

1 out of 5 stars Here we go again!.......2004-05-05

Guess what?? If you sit around all day long thinking to yourself, "Self, I sure do wish Roy Clark will remake his old hits again," then your dream has came true. Every song here is a remake, professionally done, but a remake none the less.

To me, I never was a big fan of these songs in the first place, they were more novelty type songs, even when he tried to be serious, he always sounded like a gimmick type act.

But what is here, remakes, are done professionaly, and I guess Roy Clarks true fans will love it. But if you are a completist like me, you would rather have the original recordings, which these are not.

And something else, don't take the picture of Clark on the back of the cd playing the guitar make you think there are "guitar sounding" songs. All the songs here are done in the vegas type sound Clark is famous for.

4 out of 5 stars Clark at his best.......2000-07-11

This album is one of Clarks best IMO all of Clarks greatest hits are here, would recommend it highly

Forced to single out what, exactly, makes Barry Louis Polisar a brilliant and hilarious kids' artist, one would be hard-pressed to pick between his absurdist songwriting and his deadpan delivery. On Old Dog, New Tricks, a 1993 album so named, presumably, because of its minor canine angle ("Our Dog Bernard," "I Wanna Be a Dog," and "I've Got a Dog and My Dog's Name Is Cat" are among the 13 tracks), the choice is as challenging as ever. Consider "My Brother Thinks He's a Banana," for instance. Here, a hapless fellow "sleeps curled up in the fruit bowl" despite his grandma's protests, and turns yellow "but seems to be O.K." In fact, his fruity predicament notwithstanding, the banana brother "really is a scholar / [He's] read all the books by Bellow / Although he likes to clown around / And cut up in the Jell-O." There's also the sweet, just shy of sincere "I Need You Like a Donut Needs a Hole," in which a sheepish Polisar admits that "I need you like a peanut in a shell / Gonna hold you in my arms like water in a well." This album bubbles over with silliness--from the nonsensical "Giggle Tickle Fiddle Little Wiggle Around" to the goofy "One Day My Best Friend Barbara Turned into a Frog." Old Dog even incorporates a thought-provoking number or two, most notably "What If a Zebra Had Spots"--"What if a tiger had spots? / What if a leopard did not?" But, as usual, Polisar's believability--he may clown around, but he never seems to be putting on a condescending kiddie act--also makes this album leagues more likable than similar-minded releases. Others may try to portray "3-Toed, Triple-Eyed, Double-Jointed Dinosaurs" in song, but none will pull it off with the polished comic punch of Polisar. -- Tammy La Gorce

4 out of 5 stars Classic OBD from the original line-up.......2005-08-07

While not as popular (or arguably quite as good) as Close to the Bone or Legacy, this is still the classic sound of the Benzie era OBD. The music has a drive and an energy that even the best of the competition (such as the Tanahill Weavers or, dare I say, the classic super group Silly Wizard) can never quite match. I call it "hard core" Scottish Folk. Good Celtic music always makes you want to dance, but this is the only stuff I've found I can also head bang to! The lyrics also have a starkness, even a black humor, far removed from the sentimental ballads of most other bands (see Bonnie Banks of Fordie and Bedlam Boys) Yet there are tender moments, too. Song for Autumn is simplistic ballad perfection, with Benzie's incomparable voice delicatly accompanied by just a single guitar. Of course, the rest of the tracks are great too, just listen to the samples!

In short, the Dogs haven't quite reached the fever pitch they would in Legacy, Close to the Bone, or Live, but then, they haven't started the slide towards light jazzy-celtic easy listening that they reach on their latest (Gab o May) either. Don't get me wrong, there's nothing wrong with that, if you're into that kind of thing, but you have to admit, bands with that sound are a dime a dozen in Celtic music nowadays. So if you've already fallen in love with the hard hitting sound of the original lineup in their later works, and want to know where to go from there, THIS is the album you want. As a matter of fact, its not a bad one to start out with, either.

-(note, for those who don't know, singer guitarist Ian Benzie and drummer Dave Cattanacht left the band after Five, and Jim Malcom took over as vocalist/guitarist on the Fit? album. This work still has some hard hitting numbers, but Malcolm brought jazzier chords and crooning vocals to most tracks. This trend grew with the next albums, and there is a BIG difference in the sound of the band from Benzie's years.)

5 out of 5 stars One of the best........2005-01-22

Not just one of the best of OBD's albums, or even that strange genre known as 'Celtic', or even 'Folk' - this is one of THE BEST CD's no matter how you slice it.

Simply superb.

4 out of 5 stars The Love Dogs Have Some New Tricks Up Their Sleeves.......2000-10-10

The Love Dogs' newest release on Tone-Cool Records could easily be described with just one word ... eclectic. I believe the band touches on damn near every style of music on this CD ... thus the title "New Tricks". They hit an extremely wide range of musical styles here ... latin-flavored funk ("The Day Before I Met You"), Texas swamp music ("Long, Long Day"), second line strut ("Northbound Train"), soul ("You'll Never Know"), and even zydeco ("Watch That Dog"). And they do all of this without sacrificing their trademark jump blues sound they've become so well known for. Besides their own eclectic originals, the Love Dogs have also marked their territory on a couple of classic R&B covers, such as Tiny Bradshaw's "Well Oh Well", Dinah Washington's "Richest Guy In The Graveyard", and Ray Charles' "You Be My Baby" ... as well as a cover of contemporary blues hero Keb' Mo's "Hand It Over". Definitely enough variety here to please just about everyone.

The Dawg's have not only succeeded at incorporating the variety of music that a live Love Dog's show normally consists of, but they have also succeeded at getting more of the energy of one of their live shows into this CD as well. If you have ever attended one of their shows, then you know that not only are you going to be extremely entertained, but that the band is going to do something unpredictable to put a smile on your face. For example, the last time I saw a Love Dogs show, lead singer Ed Scheer proclaimed "This is how we do it in Boston!", then grabbed his cordless microphone and proceeded to wander out into the crowd as he began the next tune ... followed closely by the rest of the band in what resembled a conga line ... all still playing their instruments. A large portion of the patrons filed in behind them as they made their way through the club ... singing and playing all the way, upstairs, outside, down the street, and back to the stage ... much to the delight of the crowd.

Love Dogs shows are, in fact, legendary. They have actually been dubbed "the Grateful Dead of Jump Blues". And although no two shows are ever the same, you can always count on the band's interaction with their rabid fans. They're not just on the stage to play their songs and leave, like so many other bands. They have to give their fans an event to remember. Says Scheer, "It's important to us to have fun. We have a lot of humor in our music, and we love to surprise each other and make each other laugh. That's a big part of what we do, and when a crowd can see that it becomes contagious. We call that the `Tribal Love Vibe'" But just because they're having a lot of fun and being silly, don't think that this pack of dogs are not also serious musicians. They are all very well versed in blues and jazz and take their music very seriously at the same time they are having so much fun. The current band lineup consists of Scheer, Alizon Lissance on piano and vocals, Myanna on alto and tenor sax, Glenn Shambroom on baritone/bass/soprano sax and guitar, Jesse Williams on stand-up bass and vocals, Steve Brown on drums and vocals, Mario Perrett on tenor sax, and Bruce `The Goose' McGrath on baritone/tenor/alto sax and clarinet. This is a band unlike any you've ever heard before, believe me. They're sure to get your tail waggin', whether listening to one of their 3 great CD's or catching one of their fantastic live shows. And like Ed Scheer says, if "it doesn't put a smile on your face, check your pulse because you might be dead!"

      Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars superb remastering - long overdue for the Bonzos.......2006-07-06

On the liner notes for the Bonzo Dog Band's 40th Anniversary DVD (2006) we are proudly advised that the DVD project had nothing whatsoever to do with EMI - and neither does this CD, thank god. The EMI CD's all had lack lustre mastering, whereas all of the digitally remastered tracks on "New Tricks" sound vastly superior - these detailed songs deserve such reverent treatment.

It's worth owning even if only for the perfect and rather rare stereo versions of "I'm The Urban Spaceman" (without the intro fade out of Monster Mash) and "Canyons Of Your Mind" (with the spoken dubs between the intro pauses).

My only beef was with the cut down version of "Rusty" - which fades out 2 minutes short of the original, and makes the song sound silly rather than just unusual.

Ending with "Rhinocratic Oaths" is appropriate - it's not only just about their best radically different song, but it also has a sudden death ending (which leaves you longing for more).

Whether as an introduction to the Bonzo Dog Band or in order to complete a collection, "New Tricks" is to be highly recommended.
