classic rock album.......2007-07-13
Great studio album that show cases the dual vocal styles of the raucous Leslie to the softer side of Felix. These tracks are relatively subdued (but not dull) compared to the full on live sound that Mountain produce, particularly the fantastic Nantucket Sleighride that is featured on the live album The Road Goes Ever on. Mountain were'nt around all that long but all their albums are full of good honest rock music with a touch of class.
Great Classic Recording.......2007-06-03
Having been born in the fifties the seventies was when I actually developed my taste in many things including music. This album is and has been a favorite of mine. The quality of this recording is nothing short of fantastic. If you want a well written and developed classic rock album this is it.
Pawtucket in A Bucket to Nantucket and They Sleigh- Rided It..........2007-03-10
How was I to know people? How was I to know? O.K. - so I saw this pot of gold at the end of a rainbow and decided to "borrow" a gold shilling from it in order to treat Guido and his group to a round of drinks at the Fishnet (Guido's favorite hang-out). Everything was going well, and everyone was laughing and joking UNTIL this incessant leprechaun came bursting through the door demanding his gold back! He tangled with the bouncers but, unfortunately, he had super-human strength! So again- I was forced to leave (quickly) through the kitchen exit and make my way into a waiting taxicab for a quick getaway. I am now holed up in Guido's Aunt Matilda's flat who, as you didn't know, is a spirit guide for Hollywood movie stars in their declining years. This is far worse than the King Tut debacle (see Kinks review), mainly because I couldn't cash in on his artifact and simply gave it back. But, in this case, I spent the shilling and, as you all know, Metamorpho is broke-but rich in spiritual advice. Leprechauns don't care about that. No. They are only concerned about their own greed and selfishness. This does not bode well for your own Metamorpho. And, of course, fear is a new emotion for me. The drinks, I think, diminished my strong protective aura. I should be up to snuff in a few days. Meanwhile- this irrational thing is after me. Stay tuned.
But no nevermind. Your Metamorpho will risk life and limb to bring you this review. Why? Because I am dedicated to my public and they deserve my very best (yes-even in times of great stress). Is everyone appreciative now? ...... Probably not. But, no matter...........
"Nantucket Sleighride" is an amazingly great rock album. Why is that so? I think the secret lies in Felix Pappalardi's technical production abilities as well as his prowess in songwriting and playing bass. Leslie West provides the counterpoint in the process, contributing wicked guitar riffs and that growling, rough vocal. Like sandpaper on a glossy surface, these two glide the sleigh over calm and stormy seas. To me, this is the most pleasing, most cohesive album Mountain ever did. It is thematic, it holds togther with music that revs like a thunderstorm and then disapates into peace and calm. And I love the natural band sound that emanates from it. It was made in an age when instruments did the talking instead of techical soundboards. Antiquated? Maybe. But real? Very much so.
We begin with the pounding and thunderous "Don't Look Around" which gives Leslie full range to throw his weight around, so to speak. Then it's the lovely, slow intro (Taunta) into the magnificient "Nantucket Sleighride". This is one of Metamorpho's favorites from them. This song conveys excellent "atmospherics" in conveying the setting of the song. It moves slow in the beginning, and you can almost hear those waves lapping against the bow of the ship. Felix's smooth vocal is juxtaposed against the breaks in the tune when Leslie's guitar takes over. Listen close and you'll even hear a seaman's shanty played within. The various passages here are a thing of beauty. So well thought out and every time I hear it I am in awe.
From there it is back to the hard riff and rave of "You Can't Get Away". Listen to Corky Laing's drums. Now there is a drummer my people! "Next comes Felix again with "Tired Angels". Rock solid construction with his vocals detracting from any harshness. Back again with the rock roundhouse of "The Animal Trainer and the Toad". Hmmmm......perhaps a reference to Felix and Leslie my people? Time and time again we are treated to that old, homegrown remedy of sweet and sour, Felix and Leslie; to guide us through Nantucket Sound.
The rest of the album proceeds the same - Pappalardi's reverent ode of "My Lady" and West's hard rock in "The Great Train Robbery". Letting both their strengths shine. But we have one here that involves them equally called "Travelin' In the Dark". When you combine these two - you wind up with a potent rock song and rock album which is timeless in it's genius.
In closing, I think by the time this album was made that Pappalardi had a handle on what they all could accomplish. I think his thoughts and organization are what made Mountain really flourish at this point. But let us not forget Leslie. One heck of an axe grinder if there ever was one. I hope all you rock fans investigate this one. Truly a nice classic from that era.
I hate to be rude, but I must leave quickly! That leprechaun is blow-torching a hole through the door and I must find that fire-escape...and SOON! Maybe I can go to Nantucket. I hear leprechauns hate water.
Sleighriding through life.....your own Metamorpho
Not bad but not great.......2007-02-19
I don't think Mountain's studio work ever approached their live performances. This just sounds thin, with the high point being Pappalardi's vocals in the title track. Leslie West plays much better on Leslie West Live. His guitar is the real star of this show, and his vocals get better all the time. This album doesn't capture the overwhelming sound the big guy generated. It seems like he was trying to be just another member of the band, and that's a waste. For a great kick, check out his acoustic versions of The Animals and Bob Dylan on You Tube. Mountain was just his warm-up act. He's better not than he was then.
First time - but not the last!.......2007-01-15
I ordered the Nantucket Sleighride CD by Mountain couple of weeks before Christmas and received it just in time, unlike the one ordered at the same time from a seller on the Amazon Marketplace - that one came two weeks later. The price was reasonable, and getting the CD delivered home with regular mail just great, as there was no need to commute to a vintage record store.

The Heaviest.......2003-03-13
One of my favourites by Mountain or any other band, the guitar riffs and distortion are some of best that ever hit vinyl or CD. Play this loud and it will repay you like no other hard/heavy/progressive band has or will!
A historical gem in the chronology of rock music !.......2003-02-15
Of all the stuff I've bought in the last 35 years by The Beatles, Rolling Stones, Cream, Jimi Hendrix, Procol Harum, Ten Years After, Black Sabbath, The Who, Jethro Tull, Traffic, Led Zeppelin, Deep Purple, Yes, King Crimson, Van Halen, Simple Minds, U2, The Call, Nirvana, Red Hot Chilli Peppers, Rage Against The Machine, Soundgarden, Fear Factory, Def Tones, Smashing Pumpkins, Tool, System Of a Down etc etc etc (I've got some 1200 vinyl & 800 CDs). This album ranks with ANY artist I've mentioned!
Out of my 10 desert island disks? This is definitely one of them!
It's hard and it's heavy and when called for there's melody, harmony and intelligent arrangement to soothe and intrigue. It's hardly surprising! The main songwriter Felix Pappalardi (RIP) was also the producer of many Cream albums. It may have been released way back in 1970, but it still lives on!!!BUY IT!!!
Leslie and Felix.......2002-09-26
I bought CLIMBING when it was first released. The LP revealed some of the greatest electric guitar I had ever heard. With the release of NANTUCKET SLEIGHRIDE, I became a bigger fan of MOUNTAIN. DON'T LOOK AROUND is a rock masterpiece followed by another masterpiece, TAUNTA/NANTUCKET SLEIGHRIDE. Leslie and Felix are in excellent form and the songs are well written and well crafted. This is my favorite MOUNTAIN release. I had the pleasure of seeing THE LESLIE WEST BAND in 1976 at The Blue Onion Club in Norman, Oklahoma. There will never be another band like MOUNTAIN. I also recommend FLOWERS OF EVIL with the live side that will rock you to the bone.
Another Place and Time.......2002-06-04
"Nantucket Sleighride" has got to be one of the best albums of all time. Leslie West, Felix Pappalardi, Laing, and Jack Bruce blend all their natural talents to originally make this an album that should be in everyone's collection. Check out CDs by these incredible rockers!
Unbelievably Underrated..........2002-05-12
...It's hard work to combine artistic rock with heavy, evil guitar riffs and deep, bluesy vocals. I don't know if you would classify heavy metal as only songs with demonic lyrics and loud monotonous riffs, and I don't know what the accepted starting point of the heavy metal genre is. But if this is heavy metal, it's the best and most eclectic example of it I've ever heard. I would classify this record as a combination of early '70s progressive rock, Who-like rock which is part psychedelic and part bluesy played loud and grinding. I might be wrong, I'm not a real music historian. Having heard 'Nantucket Sleighride' on vinyl, I was amazed at the lurid, echoey sound of the whole piece and the dreamy keyboard accompaniment by Pappalardi on what I think are the best tracks. The title track, 'My Lady' and 'Tired Angels' remind me of 'Wreck of The Hesperes' by Procol Harum on 'A Salty Dog.' I really thought this would have come from the '80s or maybe one of those neo-prog rock bands of the '90s that no one talks about. That's how sophisticated the production stands up to me. I wasn't as impressed by the white blues numbers 'The Animal Trainer And The Toad' and 'The Great Train Robbery,' but they hold up as enjoyable anyway. Eveything else is classic to me. Now that I think about it, there is a major Procol Harum influence apparent on this disc, except a bit harder-edged and maybe not as British-sounding. Procol Harum's another band that doesn't usually make it to the radio nowadays but nonetheless have something really terrific to offer. I can't believe 'Nantucket Sleighride' isn't more popular and the only song by Mountain I've ever heard on the radio is 'Mississippi Queen.'
