It's a shame that only one side of Elvis' multi-faceted talent is remembered 25 years on from his death but there is so much more to the millennium's greatest performer than garish jump suits and shaky legs. The 50 Greatest Love Songs reminds us what a great singer Presley was; coming from the heart with more feeling and passion than most could ever imagine, all 50 of these songs are classics of the last four decades. The double disc set includes all the up-tempo standards like the incredible "Suspicious Minds", "I just can't help believin'" and "Always On My Mind" plus the Dusty Springfield signature tune "You Don't Have to Say You Love Me". I am a huge Elvis fan, especially his love songs and gospel music. This CD is excellent and is a very comprehensive collection of his love songs. Even songs that were made famous by other artists, are sung well by him. His renditions are a pleasure to listen to. There is only one Elvis!

in as little time as possible, with the least amount

About half the songs are great old songs I'm familiar with, the other half are songs made famous by other artists and most are clangers for Elvis that are painful to listen to.

Great title hit!.......2007-06-20

Burning Love was one of Elvis' best recordings period. Unfortunately Elvis' management never figured out how to package and market his albums. Instead of releasing a new album featuring his big hit single, they opted for the quick and easy buck by packaging the hit with a bunch of older, so-so songs from his movies.

In order to be able to release several albums a year, Elvis' management had started packaging his new singles with some of his old songs that had not been released on an album. While it may have been a way to make a fast buck, Elvis' new material deserved better and should have been packaged with other new songs and treated as a major release, rather than a budget release. While the song Burning Love went all the way to number 2 on the Billboard singles chart and number 1 on the rival Cashbox chart, the album only managed to climb to 22 on the album chart. Elvis had enough new material at the time to put out a high-quality new album that probably would have done much better on the chart. As it was, they pretty much wasted his biggest hit of the 1970s by putting it on an album with a bunch of dated material.

Out of print in the U.S.! Digitally remastered special installment in the Elvis Double Features series includes the complete soundtracks to four of Elvis' '60s fun-filled feature films. The artwork is superior to the deleted domestic titles as it features photos of the original vinyl releases on the cover. This CD contains all the songs from the movies Live A Little Love A Little (1968) and The Trouble With Girls, Charro and Change Of Habit (all released in 1969) plus bonus tracks. Originally, each of the films only had singles and/or EPs released containing the soundtrack's performances. This cd has so many good songs on it.Alot of underappreciated and overlooked material.The song Edge of Reality from the dream sequence in Live A Little Love A Little was ahead of its time.The versions of Almost,Swing Down Sweet Chariot,and Clean Up Your Own Backyard from The Trouble With Girls are awesome.Let Us Pray from Change Of Habit is worth the price of the cd alone.Rubberneckin from the same movie is great also.No number one radio hits here,just plain good music,happy,feel good,toe tapping music.Buy it and enjoy.Get it while you can,this one will be a high dollar item when it is no longer available.The music from Charro has often been overlooked and unavailable as well and it is great music as well.

At a time when popular music has been micro-marketed to the far side of ad nauseam, Declan MacManus, a.k.a. Elvis Costello, has traded on his reputation as the brightest songwriter to emerge from the new wave era to foster any number of delightful, cross-genre/generation musical surprises, including soundtracks and collaborations with the Brodsky Quartet, Paul McCartney, jazz artist Roy Nathanson, and songwriting legend Burt Bacharach. The latest fruit of that generous, insatiably curious artistic spirit is this elegant partnership with Swedish mezzo-soprano Anne-Sofie von Otter. Though an admitted pop novice, Otter couldn't have picked a better confederate than Costello, an artist whose taste in songs has seldom been tainted by trend.

Together, they weave material from disparate sources--including a slate of compelling Costello material, a pair of Brian Wilson's evocative "Pet Sounds" confessionals, a Tom Waits song from Francis Ford Coppola's One from the Heart (oddly, though effectively, coupled in medley with McCartney's "Junk"), an Abba song, and the Beatles' "For No One"--into a musical tapestry of stately power and grace. Costello sparingly uses his voice as seasoning throughout, though his masterful touch is everywhere. Otter's novice pop singing reveals an easy knack for jazz phrasing that should tempt further explorations and a warmth that belies the rigidity that's so often a byproduct of classical training. Who would pair Costello and an opera singer?? Elvis, and somehow it works. I really love the tone and moodiness of it and lyrics that talk about love and life, failure and success. It's soulful, in a contemplative way, music for those tucked away, rainy days .

Finally, an opera singer who knows how to channel her Classical training into a sound that is, as one critic aptly described it, "what pop singers would sound like if they could actually sing"! Although Elvis Costello does not join Ms. von Otter very often in the vocals, when he does they harmonize beautifully. With great melodies (some beautiful, some catchy) and sensitive (but not sappy) lyrics, this album makes a fine addition to any CD collection.

Having just heard Elvis Costello's masterful collaboration with Burt Bacharach, "Painted from Memory", for the first time this past month, I had high hopes for this equally unusual partnership with mezzo-soprano Anne Sofie von Otter released in 2001. This time, however, Costello acts as arranger and producer, and it is von Otter who is front and center on vocals. She is among the most revered of singers on the opera and recital stages, and she has impressed me in the past, in particular, with her Dejanira in the 2002 Marc Minkowski-led performance of Handel's "Hercules", among many other roles she has embodied. Here she is called upon to be a pop chanteuse, and while the beauty of her voice is inarguable in any setting, her ability to interpret the diverse lyrics in these songs is far more debatable. This is where a Marianne Faithfull, a Blossom Dearie or even a Joni Mitchell could capture more of the underlying feeling with a fraction of the vocal power von Otter can provide but with twice the nuance. There is a rather sterile sameness to the performances here, somewhat jazz-inflected in a cocktail lounge manner at times and at other times, rather morose and dirge-like.

Take, for example, her rendition of Brian Wilson's "Don't Ask (Put Your Head on My Shoulder)" from the legendary "Pet Sounds" album. It moves so glacially that it actually extricates the romantic subtext almost surgically. The same can be said for Jessie Mae Robinson's "The Other Woman", which has at least Magnus Persson's vibraphone to provide relief from the tedium. She's better on the other "Pet Sounds" classic, "You Still Believe in Me", where she cannily soars with the chorus, though Costello damages it by adding some odd, muffled rapping in the background. Ironically, it is on the Costello compositions where the recording most noticeably flails. The opener "No Wonder" starts as a "Greensleeves"-like madrigal and then turns into Beatlesque pop; "Baby Plays Around" seems to suffer from exhaustion by all parties; the two Fleshquartet collaborations, "Rope" and "Just a Curio", sound somewhat like extraterrestrial hymns done in a series of minor keys; and the closing title track, "For the Stars" includes peppy, Beach Boys-sounding harmonies which escape her grasp. In fact, "Just a Curio" would have been a more appropriate title for this entire recording.

On the other hand, the Gallic flavor of Benny Andersson's accordion effectively informs her rendition of Tom Waits' "Broken Bicycles", which melds perfectly with Costello's vocal on Paul McCartney's "Junk". Speaking of Andersson, a fellow Scandinavian, von Otter admirably covers a piano-led ABBA ballad, "Like an Angel Passing Through My Room". She also displays a meticulously casual bounce on Lennon-McCartney's "For No One", though it stops rather abruptly. Von Otter acquits herself surprisingly well on the jazzy "Shamed into Love", written by another unlikely duo, Costello and Rubén Blades, and performed as almost a smokier variation of Bacharach's "Alfie". And speaking of Bacharach, she does a nice turn on the lovely "This House Is Empty Now" from the 1998 Bacharach-Costello disc. Costello and von Otter are masters of their craft, but I think some of the collaborations reflect simply irreconcilable differences. While Costello seems to have an insatiable desire to expand musically, his hubris here appears to constrain the often preternatural vocal skill von Otter displays on the opera and recital stage. Consequently, what we have here is a nice album, a generous one with eighteen tracks, that doesn't seem to capitalize on either contributor's talent fully.

what's so funny about peace, love, and understanding?.......2004-04-22

Nothing's funny about this boring duo. I picked this up FREE at my library and it didn't take me too many tracks to see why it was donated. The musical arrangements are hapless and dull, and her voice is Dion without the Vegas power finale. Come to think of it, the lyrics remind me of Dion; they are as saccharine as anything Dion has ever sung. I wasted a blank CD on this limp, sleepy pairing of two otherwise good artists.

No life in her (pop) art.......2004-03-15

I am a big fan of both artists and wanted very much for this combination to work. It avoids the traditional trap of "oversinging" the pop material. But a few years after its release, in these American Idol era, is that really such a terror for pop music any more? So-called oversinging seems pretty popular these days!

The big problem is that von Otter has not found a way to communicate any emotion in this scaled-down form of singing. All her classical techniques are stripped away, and there's nothing to replace them. Sure, her voice is gorgeous, but it sounds exactly the same no matter what the lyrical content. The songs could have been made up of nonsense syllables for all the emotional life she communicates.

Deeply disappointing - but someone, somewhere, will figure out how to bring classically trained singers to the wonderful pop song repertoire that has been composed over the past 50 years. Elvis may very well be the person to do it, but not on this album.

Another good soundtrack combo.......2007-06-20

"Viva Las Vegas" and "Roustabout" were probably about the cutoff point in Elvis' soundtrack career (and movie career) where things just started heading downhill. In "Viva Las Vegas", you have the classic title track that everyone who is everyone knows from every movie that ever has anything to do with Vegas these days -- they all find a way to get "Viva Las Vegas" in there somewhere and it is a great song. Other solid songs include "What I'd Say" and "C'mon Everybody", two rockers, and the ballad "Today, Tomorrow And Forever". The rest are so-so, but have some decent vocals from Elvis, along with a couple of duets from Ann Margaret, which really spices it up, especially "The Lady Loves Me", a playful little tune.

On Roustabout, the good songs include "Roustabout", "Little Egypt", "Big Love Big Heartache", "One Track Heart". You can even really get into "There's A Brand New Day On The Horizon", "Hard Knocks" and "Poison Ivy League" -- all nice little up-tempo songs that are fun.

Overall, I'd say this is where Elvis really put in his last true inspired Hollywood soundtracks (and acting, for that point) and you can tell he just basically went through the motions from here on out for the next five years. It didn't help that around the time "Roustabout" was released in 1964, the British Invasion was taking the U.S. by storm and basically bumped Elvis from his superstardom monopoly, which probably didn't set well either, and he didn't get back into the groove and become relevant in the music industry again until his 1968 Comeback Special.

Not a bad collection.......2007-03-23

This CD puts together two of Elvis's mid-60's movie soundtracks, Roustabout and Viva Las Vegas (aka Love in Las Vegas). The Roustabout soundtrack was originally released in 1964 and went to number 1 on the US album chart (it would be Elvis' last number 1 album in the US until 1973's Aloha from Hawaii). For some reason the Viva Las Vegas soundtrack was not released in album format. Instead a single and an EP were released with songs from the movie in 1964. What'd I Say went to number 21 on the US singles chart while it's flip-side, Viva Las Vegas peaked at 29. While these soundtracks were not his best, and certainly not up to the level of his earlier works, they are not bad and are a must for Elvis fans.

Overall Quality Poor.......2007-07-19

So far I've only gotten to really like the two familiar hits: A little less conversation and Rubberneckin'. Honestly the 2001 (?) remasters sound a whole lot better. In fact the overall sound quality of this CD is very poor. In this case, you get what you pay for.

1970 oddball still a great listen.......2007-05-27

I surmise that the powers-that-be did not expect this album to sell in huge quantities, but it did, and for good reason: it was very well-programmed, and engineered - dig the "dry echo" on Rubberneckin' and Clean Up Your Own Backyard. (Interestingly enough, songs which "came back" in modern times as hit singles - "Clean Up..." with a remade vocal.)
Strange thing is, the title tune is really the least appealing, a curious downbeat lounger, which of course Elvis saves from oblivion.
Long Legged Girl... is real rock and roll, apparently taken originally from the superior 45rpm mix, and re-mastered - wow, check out what sounds like a cookin' band in back of Elvis. (Still, most likely not what the Big El recommended, but compared to that miserable l.p. pressing from the '60s, it's a gas).
Here I got a chance to re-consider [baby] Charro. I always felt that Presley could have injected more life force into the deal, more chest tone, but it remains a strong B-side to this day.
Now I gotta look for the re-mastered Let's Be Friends!

Great for the price!.......2006-12-13

This album was originally released in 1970. It was one in a series of low budget releases which included songs that had been recorded earlier for use in his movies or released as singles, but had not been included on an album. This is one of the best in the series and was certified Platinum by the RIAA!

While the title song sounds dated, the rest of the CD is very good! It has two top 40 hits ("U.S. Male" peaked at 28 in 1968 and the underappreciated "Clean up Your Own Backyard" hit 35 in 1969) and several other songs that were minor hits ("Long Legged Girl" 63, "Stay Away" 67, "A Little Less Conversation" 69, and "Almost in Love" 95). It has the original versions of "A Little Less Conversation" and "Rubberneckin'" which were remixed and became international hits just a few years ago. And this CD contains "Stay Away" not "Stay Away Joe".

This is an excellent collection for a budget price!

A great Elvis Camden LP finally on CD...but why is the intro still edited?..........2006-11-07

"Almost In Love" was a great Elvis LP to have when it was first released in 1970. At the time, most of these songs had only been released as singles, except for the track "Long Legged Girl", which was originally from the "Double Trouble" soundtrack. The sticker on the front of this CD claims that it was remastered...however, the guitar intro on "Almost In Love" is still shortened, just like it was on the original LP. Why wasn't the unedited master used here instead? However, we do get one change here that was an improvement. The song "Stay Away", which was only in mono on the original LP, is the stereo version from the "Double Features" series. Also, the reviewer named Lon above got it backwards. The original version of the LP included "Stay Away, Joe", and was later replaced with "Stay Away" in later pressings...not the other way around. When I first purchased this CD, it did list the song as "Stay Away, Joe" on the cover and the disc, but this was soon corrected in later pressings as well. The CD now has the song listed correctly as "Stay Away". A great Elvis compilation, and well worth purchasing because of the low price.

'70s Camden Budget Album.......2006-10-05

I remember buying this album on vinyl back in 1970. It's always been one of my favorite Camden albums. The songs may not all be exciting (depending on personal taste), but they're all more than listenable and well sung.

Yes, there is a printing error listing Stay Away, Joe instead of Stay Away. I should think that would make this cd even more collectable.

This cd brings back a lot of fond memories.

The best single CD collection of Elvis love songs.......2006-12-27

This is yet another collection of Elvis love songs. This CD was released in 2005 and was a minor hit on the album charts, peaking at 120. It was a bigger hit in Europe making the top 30. This collection includes many big hits and classic songs. It is a testament to Elvis that they could put together a love song compilation that includes more hits than most other artists' greatest hits collections! This CD has 6 number one singles (Are You Lonesome Tonight?, It's Now Or Never, Love Me Tender, I Want You I Need You I Love You, Don't, and Surrender), 3 Adult Contemporary number one hits (Can't Help Falling In Love, The Wonder Of You, and You Don't Have To Say You Love Me), and five other hit songs (A Fool Such As I, Any Way You Want Me, It Hurts Me, There Goes My Everything, and If I Can Dream). My favorite is not one of the hits, but the song "Doin' The Best I Can" from the GI Blues soundtrack. This CD also includes a previously unreleased version of "For the Good Times" which is very good. While this a solid set and the sound quality is excellent, I prefer the 2 CD collection "50 Greatest Love Songs." But if you don't want to spend a few extra dollars on a two CD set, this one is probably the best single CD collection of Elvis love songs.

Get used to the compilations.......2006-11-02

By now its clear that bmg will only issue Elvis in the market in the form of compilations. There are pros and cons to this new 'Love' compilation. The biggest pro is the sound: this compilation has been mastered by Vic Anesini using DSD technology and the results are incredible: any older compilation (pre 2002) you have will not sound as good as this, period. This is also not just a compilation of Elvis ballads that made the top ten or his best known ballads, there are some obscure selections and even a previously unreleased alternate take. The value of the money is great. Almost 30 tracks in one CD. The cons? Although the compilation is called 'Love' there are some tracks that are not about romantic Love and will probably get you out of the mood (ie "If I can dream".) The biggest cons is that some of Elvis most beautiful love songs are not inlcuded on this collection: 'Love Me' and 'Young and Beautiful'. Not a definitive compilation by any means, but it kind of appeals to both newbies and fans.

Good selection of love songs by the King.......2005-04-13

Elvis recorded many great love songs during his career so trying to select just twenty-four for this compilation must have been a daunting task.

Several of those selected are the obvious classics that will be forever associated with Elvis (even if one or two of them were previously recorded by other singers) - these include Are you lonesome tonight, Can't help falling in love, Always on my mind, It's now or never, Love me tender, A fool such as I, The wonder of you and There goes my everything.

There also some Elvis songs that aren't always selected for compilations of this type (Don't, If I can dream) as well as covers of songs generally associated with other singers, but which Elvis sing superbly. These include Hawaiian wedding song, Fever, Let it be me, And I love you so, You don't have to say you love me and Unchained melody.

While this collection has much to commend it, you may wish to consider the similarly themed double CD (50 greatest love songs), which contains most of the tracks here and appears to offer better value for money.

A nice package all around.......2005-02-20

This is really a very nice collection of love songs from Elvis. I wish the tracking order had been in chronoligcal order by year, but otherwise I'm very happy with the collection. I purchased it for the unreleased studio version of "For The Good Times" which is nice, but in my opinion does not come close to the live version on the Madison Square Garden album. For those that are new to Elvis thanks to the #1 hits and 2nd To None collections this will be a great way to hear a little of the different styles of music Elvis was capable of. I do have to say that "Unchained Melody" is a stand out on here as every Elvis fan knows that this was close to the end for him, but the voice was stronger than ever. Sure Elvis fans will have these songs in their collections already, but the remastering job by Vic Anesini is stellar and it brings new life to these classics and will not disappoint.

another mixed bag?.......2005-02-20

How long does a sex symbol last? Isn't it time to seaze repackaging and stick to re-releasing? Those are the questions one'd likely pose to RCA Victor. With everything he has been to America and the world to date - Elvis is the last artist on the roster to benefit from this 20-something ad-hoc tracks culled from dozen original sources. OK, it's a brilliant remaster to bring out yet new dynamics in "Are You Lonesome..." and the booklet texture feels silky stylish, but what's definitely missing is His singularity. Mundane "Surrender" takes place where fancier "Suspicion (torments my heart)" should've been. Few live recordings (again and umpteenth time!) virtually ruin the studio homogenity of this - predominantly studio - collection. No, it's not THAT bad. No one can take Elvis material and come up with an offhand product. But it stand no chance in the store against a "two Elvis albums on 1 CD" thing. Remaster or no remaster.

Solid,Passionate work from THE Singer.......2007-07-08

Love Letters demonstrates Elvis'undeniable love for music.He didn't just sing a song...he gave it energy,he let it breathe.This is clearly on display in the way he sings on Heart of Rome.When I'm Over You is another opportunity for him to grab hold of the music and make it his own.I'll Never Know and This is Our Dance are two seldom heard songs which makes this a must have for any fan.Got My Mojo Working and Cindy,Cindy allows Elvis to show-off...and he does.His ability to sing R&B still goes unnoticed except by us fans.The title track was the second time he did this song.the first was in the mid-60s.I like this version best for his voice had matured by the early 70s.This was one of many albums from his historic Nashville marathon recording sessions.A great and fun CD to have.

Ok but not great.......2007-06-24

This is an ok album; not particularly strong, but not bad. It was released in 1971 and peaked at 33 on the US album chart and 12 on the country album chart. It did better in the UK reaching 7 on the album chart. The title track, "Love Letters" was originally released as a single in 1966 and was a top 20 hit in the US and top ten in the UK. The song "Life" was a minor hit in 1971 reaching 53 on the US singles chart and 34 on the Adult Contemporary chart. It's flip side "Only Believe" was a top ten country hit. It has a couple of up-tempo tunes on it that are pretty good, "Got My Mojo Working" and "Cindy, Cindy".

Reading through some other comments, I'd like to throw in my own three cents. Beegie Adair should indeed be considered among the short list of great jazz pianists. Her recordings are one thing. Here LIVE PERFORMANCES are quite another.

On Love Elvis, Beegie Adair and her trio present the great romantic songs of Elvis Presley in a, yes, "romantic" and "easy on the ears" format. Intentionally created for dinners, candlelight moments, and those oh-so-grand times of canoodling with your heartmate. Few people can make Elvis covers listenable, and Adair's success at doing so is proven by the fact that this project has sold nearly 10 times what a "typical" jazz record sells....and it continues to sell.

This in no way dismisses her from inclusion among Bill Evans, George Shearing, Erroll Garner, Oscar Peterson, Tommy Flanagan, Gene Harris, et al. Still a sceptic? Go see her live concerts. I've attended dozens of them, and I have every single recording she has made (23 to date).

Again, her recordings are great, no doubt. Her live performances are beyond great. Hear for yourself.

Lovely tribute despite of the thought of Elvis songs.......2004-10-17

I was skeptical about this one. Playing Elvis songs on piano? But it turned out great. Beegie makes it her own. Soft and classy. Must have!

Beegie does it again!.......2004-01-04

I recently read a review of the tribute to Elvis album written by a jazz fan who said Beegie is not a true jazz piano player, since the Elvis songbook is not worthy of jazz interpretation. On the contrary, the LOVE, ELVIS album is a testament to Beegie's great talent. She plays the selections with outstanding taste in nice and easy swing interpretations, and the arrangements for the trio are excellent. I have all of Beegie's albums, and every disc is a gem. Her latest issue is a tribute to the music of Johhny Mercer. Do not hesitate to pick it up, as well as the Elvis tribute. You won't regret it.

I was never one of Elvis' biggest fans but I am a fan of Beegee Adair and after listening to her very sensitive interpretations of Elvis's better known songs, I have become a belated Elvis Fan.Beegee Adair has a way of playing ballads with a fresh approach and intersting improvisations.

Beegie continues to impress me with her Artistic ability. This has to be the best jazz trio cd that i have ever heard. Beegie seems to know how to bring out the best in the melody. It seems like that all the songs on this cd were written for Beegie. A big hand of applause for her brillant talent. I hope there will more of the same to come, on future projects.
