Packs into 5 CD's a sampling of Broadway tunes from the 20's thru (almost) today, mostly from original cast recordings. Includes not just well-known hits, but also some lesser-known gems. Sound quality is first rate, booklet is informative too. Have given this as a gift to several friends with rave reviews.

Top Shelf.......2007-01-04

This is THE definitive collection of Broadway hits. I have other collections, and none of them measure up. A great deal of care was obviously taken in compiling and presenting this box set. It covers a lot of ground, starting with some long-forgotten but still very enjoyable hits from the days of yore, and finishing with present-day favorites. To the best of my knowledge, the recordings are by those who made them famous. You won't be disappointed.

Roger Chapman cares little for what's trendy, popular, or in vogue. The man is a living legend, but his style of singing has always divided folks into pro-Chappo or anti-Chappo camps. Pity the fools in the anti-Chappo camps. Kiss My Soul is one of the stronger releases in Chapman's astonishingly prolific catalog of recordings made under his name.

The title track Kiss My Soul and Two Pieces of Silver showcase his smoldering power. On several selections, Chappo takes his time, building up a head of steam like a coal-fired locomotive tackling a steep grade. By the time tracks such as One More Whiskey or Mistreated are nearly three-fourths finished, Chappo and his crack band will have you out of your seats. Steve Simpson, his long-time guitarist in the Shortlist, showcases his skills are many spots.

Since the long-lamented passing of two of the greatest bands to come from England, Family and Streetwalker, Chappo has kept the torch burning bright. One flaw on this and some of the other solo works is that the production work is not as crisp and tight as we have become accustomed to these days. Keep in mind that Chapman has never been accorded the recording budget or perks granted to more popular but far inferior vocalists such as Rod Stewart.

Postscript: I cannot help but miss the contributions of his long-time writing and performing partner, the great guitarist Charlie Whitney, whose own career has faded away.

Anne Sofie Von Otter is a born singer of songs, and this collection of Swedish miniatures dating from about 1910 to the 1950s are easy to relate to both in their Romanticism and the direct, unaffected manner in which the fine mezzo puts each across. In Ture Rangström's "En gammal dansrytm" (Old Dance), she uncharacteristically slides into the song in a sultry fashion; it makes you sit up and listen. She rarely brings any darkness into her tone. In keeping with the CD's title, we get soft, Northern light in both her tone and pianist Bengt Forsberg's--and by so avoiding any false sense of drama, each song's subject, particularly the ones about nature are, well, natural. But when something else is called for, as in Bo Linde's "Är jag intill döden trött" ("I Am Tired to Death"), von Otter knows how to emphasize the text amost conversationally. This lovely collection of pastels occasionally threatens to evaporate, but close attention reveal true delights. The mezzo is in fine voice, with no "opera diva" behavior to get in the way of the songs' charms. A specialized collection, perhaps, but one which reaps fine rewards. --Robert Levine

HUGE Chili Pepper Fan.......2006-12-14

I enjoy this album very much. I am a RHCP fanatic although sometimes I am in the mood for light relaxing music and this fits perfectly. So, I get to enjoy the best of both worlds with this excellent tribute to their work. Might I add that Under the Bridge is beautifully composed here, and is my favorite track of all time and on this album as well.

Not-so-loud Chili Peppers' songs.......2006-10-30

First and foremost, The Red Hot Chili Peppers are a hard rock band. Nobody is going to buy this album in order to hear the Chili Peppers- that would be stupidity. There are only two reasons anybody would purchase this album:

1. You love the Chili Peppers' music and You want a change of pace.
2. You love listening to string instruments (such as the violin).

Buy this album if you love the Chili Peppers' music and you love strings. That sounds like a no-brainer...

I realy happend to enjoy this CD. I just bought it recently and every time i listen to it i feel like its the real thing because its so similar. I Love just relaxing to this cd. I think it is worth hearing.

..but I just feel indifferent about this CD. I bought it thinking it would be an orchestrated-type stuff, which it is but I was hoping for something I could relax to. Whenever I hear the music in this CD, I think of weddings. Don't get me wrong, it's a good CD, but just not what I was expecting (which was a more relaxing kind of orchestration).

oh man.......2004-06-29

i bought this cd when i went looking for the last elusive cd that was missing from my rhcp collection(freaky styley, you should buy that one too)...i ended up walking out with this one as well and i rocked it all the way home with my windows open. this isn't an orchestral arrangement, it is a true to the original quartet: every solo, (almost) every fill, and every vocal que is present. The basslines jump from Persiani's prodigious upright (bass) and u can almost picture flea bouncing around. this work brought a whole new breadth and life to th emusic that makes the hair on the back of my neck stand on end; and for that, i applaud the string quartet.

Superb Operetta Collection.......2006-09-12

Surely this must be the finest collection of songs in Enlgish from operettas and early 20th century musicals available anywhere. Marilyn Hill Smith is in fine voice and is admirably partnered by baritone Peter Morrison. This two CD collection is truly a 'treasure.' It belongs in the collection of any English speaking lover of operetta.

Classic Orthodox Chants.......2001-08-24

A subtle recording, documenting some of the chanting styles used at the Kyrillo-Belozersk monastery. Technically speaking, the chants are performed flawlessly. However, at times I found myself yearning for more warmth - a warmth you might better find with a small ensemble of monks in their monastery, rather than an institute. Overall, this CD is very good, with the focus being track 10 "The Cherubic Hymn." This is a very well-known, ancient hymn (written circa. 300 AD, possibly earlier), and is chanted using a classic melody.
