Product Description
Following up their debut, "Midnattens Widunder", the Finnish Finntroll unleash yet another fun folk/polka/black metal release. As with their debut, this isn't just another black/folk act that take themselves way too seriously. Just the opposite...these guys are just having a good time and playing a few different styles of music they enjoy. in doing so, they have actually separated themselves from the endless sea of black metal and black/folk acts, creating something that is actually worth listening to. A rare feat for modern black metal hybrid bands.
Jaktens Tid has one of my favorite instrumental intro's with 'Krig.' Every time that I hear this, I have colorful thoughts that I am in a viking war ship ready to meet my northern brethren in battle. 'Fodosagan' is possibly the best song present on the album. The keyboard notes blend nicely with guitar riffs and death growls. The accordians sound funny at first, but they really do make the music enjoyable. The title track (Jaktens Tid) starts with a great vocal melodies and is very addicting all around. 'Aldhissla' is one of my favorite songs because of the vocals in the beginning and folk drums, only for the guitars to come on and growls crushing you with wonderful metal.
Finntroll may be one of metal's most bizarre bands, but they are another talented group to come out of Finland. Skrymer and Routa have done a terrific job on the guitars, and Trollhorn is masterful on the keyboards. Finntroll's latest release 'Nattfödd,' is just as good as Jaktens Tid. Both albums are fun, full of folk melody, and plain metal fun. This album is highly recommended to fans of viking, folk, and troll metal. Finntroll's music is very excellent and fun to listen to. Enjoy!
I've had this album for about two years and for some reason in the last couple months it has grown on me a lot and became quite addicting. The songs are quite catchy and well... danceable, containing very upbeat rhythms and accordions quite often and sometimes calmer Viking-style brass instruments and keyboards. This is all in addition to crushingly heavy guitars and aggressive growling vocals (in... Swedish). If the melodies aren't polka, then they're more of a Viking-metal or folk-metal sort of feeling.
It is not quite as silly as most people think, although there are a few parts that are silly such as the second part of the last track, "Tomhet Och Tystnad Härska" which is some kind of Finnish drinking song played in a folk style with banjos, hefty trumpets and drunken slurring. Also the "backing vocals" in the title track are some form of totally wacky/drunken chanting, and there's a few bits and pieces of crazy vocals like that scattered around.
"Krig" is a short intro to gradually unleash the chaos, containing pounding drums and deep brass instruments over ambient keyboards. It continues right into the next song "Fodosagan" which begins with a deep piano melody and seems like a relatively normal black metal song until it breaks down and emphasizes the wild accordion melody, then goes into a slightly calmer section with acoustic guitars.
"Slaget Vid Blodsalv" is quite possibly the best song, it immediately starts with a hyper-paced accordion melody right along with heavy guitars; the clash of these two genres is just so ridiculously wild. The drumming in this song is excellent. "Bakom Varje Fura" is a short symphonic arrangement and a break between the chaos, it almost sounds like music from a kid's animated movie or something, but it is honestly really good.
So far I have this album and Nattfodd, and it is really hard to determine which one I like better. So if you like one you'll definitely like the other. And If you haven't heard Finntroll at all yet, you'll love it if you're craving some metal that adds fun and craziness to the chaos.
Another thing that impresses me with Fintroll is their ability to write good songs. To me there are a lot of bands out there, especially Black Metal bands, with good musicianship but the inability to write a good song if it killed them. You find nothing of the sort with Fintroll. Not only is this some of the catchiest metal, but it's also chock full of wonderful musicianship. You'll find layers and layers of memorable melodies. If you're into metal and are interested in seeing how far it can be taken, give this one a try!
By a Finnish folk metal band called 'Finntroll,' they combine metal with harsh vocals, with a lot of folk, Finnish 'humppa' influence. No, this is not Death metal, its folk metal with harsh vocals. And, its done really well too. The vocals are crisp and nice, there is a lot of melody in this, and not something you'll only listen to once, a lot of 'replay' value.
The songs are very cool, full of energy and power, and really fun to listen to. I found that in some other Finntroll albums like Nattfodd the songs can be a bit repetative and not that interesting but that definitely isn't the case with Jaktens Tid, really cool songs, a cool performance, good instrumentation, what else is there to ask for?
5/5
