This U.K. quintet blurs the lines between beauty and madness by setting an angelic chorus against an ominous and darkly gothic soundscape. --Jeff Bateman

5 out of 5 stars Goth meets Prog.......2007-04-26

I didn't see any mention below of the influence of the tradition of progressive/art rock on this band. But it is here, otherwise I know I wouldn't find it near as enjoyable as I do. I hope the baebes can bring the boys together now and again for another outing like this... If you like SUSPIRIA, other required listenings are IRIS, CARNIVAL OF SOULS, and FAIRYTALES OF SLAVERY (which I'm actually starting to think is better than SUSPIRIA). You can tell the personnel are into many kinds of music. I'm sure Katherine Blake was just bursting with ideas about this time. Her little affected snarl is the only thing sort of extraneous, beyond maybe once in a catalogue of albums. One more note: One review recommended we play this LOUD. Yep, that you almost *have* to do, the MSG records being in bad need of a remastering.

5 out of 5 stars "Unique band, unique sound".......2005-09-02

Miranda Sex Garden's second full length album, named "Suspiria", is one of the most exciting and challenging records I've ever heard; an extreme aural experience that mesmerises the listener while at the same time leaving you completely extenuated. An album that has the same effects as an hallucinogen. Not many records I've found being able to describe dreamlike and unreal landscapes in such a proficient way as this one. Love, grief, madness, loneliness, confusion, longing, strangeness, just name them, all these concepts are portrayed and surface through the music and the lyrics. Without a doubt a must have for fans of alternative and avant-garde music.

The band's line-up has changed since this album was released in 1993, but in those days this fascinating British group was home of three female vocalists of amazing power: Donna McKevitt, Katharine Blake and Kelly McCusker. Very few bands have had at their core so much vocal talent. These three women are responsible for the nightmarish and angelic voices that permeate the album supported by the energetic pounding of drummer Trevor Sharpe and the stinging guitar of Ben Golomstock. The use of organs, violins, keyboards and violas is astounding as well. All these elements put together constitute a weird and unique blend that has to be heard in order to be believed. Dreamy and brooding at once.

It is very difficult, not to say impossible, to describe in detail the contents of this album or just pin it down on a certain musical genre. Miranda Sex Garden's music was widely tagged as "goth rock", but only because there were no other groups remotely similar to compare them to. I think that the true roots of this band don't have much to do with pop/rock music, being their real sources of inspiration in genres such as those of free-jazz, lounge/cabaret music, experimental and modern medieval music; perhaps also in the tradition of film scores as made by artists like David Lynch and Angelo Badalamenti (the cover version of "In heaven" is a good example of this). The group was also sometimes misunderstood, being booed (among other disrespectful things) at several concerts while supporting bands like Blur and Depeche Mode (it's got no sense to cast pearls before swine, that's for sure). It is also obvious that Miranda Sex Garden's music is an acquired taste and neither does please everyone nor leaves anyone indifferent. Thank God I'm one of the happy few who can enjoy it anytime.

In conclusion, "Suspiria" is a stimulating album that teases and compels and which I strongly recommend to the adventurous listener. If you own the album and haven't got into it yet, just persist. This is not background music, it demands your full attention; but it will grow on you and will eventually become one of your favourites (I, for instance, didn't get it at all the first time I heard it). It is a complex and difficult album but also really beautiful, rich and remarkable. Miranda Sex Garden managed to create something very special here. The entire record is so full of details and different layers of sound that the listening experience is never the same twice. You always discover something new each time you listen it.

I don't know if this album will go down in music history but for me there's no doubt that "Suspiria" is a historic record. A real jewel.

PLAY IT LOUD and freak out

5 out of 5 stars In heaven.......2003-03-15

I recently got into Miranda Sex Garden. I first heard a song by MSG on the "12 Tales" compilation last year and was duly impressed by their song "Ardera Sempre". Very operatic. Awhile back I picked up the remixes for "Rush Forth My Tears" which I found to be equally compelling. I finally got around to checking out Miranda Sex Garden the other day and I bought "Suspiria" on a whim because of I love "Ardera Sempre" so much. I have to admit that it took me a few listens for the music to penetrate my subconscious. If anything, this isn't easy listening music. I'm used to the more accessible sounds of Katherine Blake's latest group Mediaeval Baebes. Sometimes the best music isn't the kind that quickly seduces the ears, and "Suspiria" is one of those cds that required a few listens before I could make some sort of assessment. Of course I simply love the opening track "Ardera Sempre". The song is absolutely breathtaking. What really unnerved my ears when I first listened to "Suspiria" was the wailing vocals and guitars on "Play" that just took me by surprise. And the same could be said about "Inferno" and "Willie Biddle and his Waltzing Maggot" minus the wailing vocals. My initial reaction to those songs were "WTH?!". Eventually the songs grew on me as I listened more to the cd. Although a far cry from Mediaeval Baebes, I found Miranda Sex Garden's music very compelling to listen to and makes me want to listen to their other cds.

5 out of 5 stars Truly Extraordinary.......2002-07-26

One problem I see--or, rather, hear--with much music today is that so much of it sounds the same. I don't think anyone could say that about Miranda Sex Garden, and _Suspiria_ is their finest hour. I bought this album in 1993, having also bought _Madra_ and _Iris_. This CD, out of the five that MSG have recorded to date (_Fairytales of Slavery_ and _Carnival of Souls_ being the other ones not yet mentioned), has the most varied, interesting and sophisticated sound. There are gorgeous female vocals--both lead and harmonies--a violin, viola and a cello in addition to the usual bass, guitars, keys and drums. The sounds of strings were never so prevalent in MSG before as here, and haven't been since. I don't want to make you think this album is all pretty and smooth, however--it is *dynamic*, often varying from a soft, harmonic smoothness to an almost disturbing dissonance *within* the same song. I find it highly ironic that the MSG offshoot-band Mediaeval Baebes--started by MSG's Katharine Blake and specializing in acoustic and a-capella medieval and medievalesque music--are much more popular, it seems, than MSG. I still remember waiting in line seven hours to see MSG's single United States gig on the tour for "Suspiria"--and every time I hear the opening crescendo of keys and strings on this CD, I'm right back there again. Take the journey yourself--you'll be exposed to something rare--something actually *unique* in the modern music wasteland.

4 out of 5 stars Exciting, Energetic and Diffrent.......2002-05-05

Miranda Sex Garden are simply one of the most exciting bands in the whole goth genre or simply modern music for that matter. Miranda Sex Garden came up with an interesting idea of using violins in the way a rock guitar is usually used, at least in terms of importance. Sometimes violins substitute guitars and cellos fill in for the bass. Other times they rock out on regular old guitars. Adding in lots of interesting percussion and keyboards and you has one hell of a sound. But possibly the best part about this album is the vocals. Katherine has both massive amounts of talent and character (seems most singers only have one or the other...) Then once you add in the great harmonies you have an unbeatable combination.

Suspiria is the first full-length realse by MSG as an actual "band" (they previously released the almost all acapella "Marda" and the EP "Iris") and at times it shows. Sometimes songs just never get going and others stumble at points, but still the album is rather consistent. There's about a ratio of 3-1 in favor of great music while the rest is just ok.

The album starts out with the operatic Andera Sempre. On this song Donna McKevitt does the lead vocals. Her voice is distinctly deeper than Katherine's and sounds great flying over the violins. The song also contains a great keyboard solo. The next two songs are typical Sex Garden, but are both impressive, especially "Open Eyes" as Katherine snarls "She sees him, with open eyes" in her sassy way. "Play" is easily my favorite song. Starting out quite and simple, the violins build up and soon your surrounded in a hell of wailing voices, screeching guitars, and strange whip (or breaking glass) sound effects. Defiantly one of the scariest songs ever, by anyone. I remember when me and my friend were just talking with this album playing in the background. At the end of this song I saw horror on his face and all he could say is "That slightly disturbed me."

After "Play" you need to calm down and the semi-acapella is a great follow up. With the vocals changing from angelic to downright bratty, the song is an interesting contrast. "Bring Down the Sky" contains a great melody and also has a cool instrumental part in the middle. "Inferno" is a great instrumental, as the violins and cello carry the song along as good, if not better then any electric guitar would. The song goes along til it hits it peak about seven minutes in then ends with the strange horn led "Willie Biddle and His Waltzing Maggot". The album finishes off with a cover of the jazz standard "My Funny Valentine" and is performed rather heartfelt by McKevitt once again.

Another thing worth mentioning is the drumming on this album. Its very acoustic and rather simple, but gets the job done to impressive degree. I don't like simple or standard drumming, but here it impresses the hell out of me, and works so well.

For Miranda Sex Garden it is really a tie between this and "Fairytales of Slavery" for the claims on best album. FTOS is quite different as the guitars start to take over, which isn't bad, but the album isn't quite as distinct. So I say this is the place to start. If you're new to MSG this is where to start as this defines they're sound the best, and if you're already a fan I garuntee you'll love this album.

This collection of mostly extended and alternate takes is a rewarding, amusing, and sometimes insufferable collection of themes by the band most famous for underscoring the films of Italian horror director Dario Argento (Goblin's discoverer). At their worst, Goblin sound like a bunch of pre-goth druggies jamming in a dreary fusion, but their best moments spawn almost Biblical images of dismembered bodies, Satanic masses, and defiant souls forever damned. Included are longer versions of themes from Profondo Rosso (with more than a nod to Mike Oldfield's "Tubular Bells") and Suspiria. As the liner notes suggest, this collection attempts to demonstrate that Goblin had a musical identity independent of their famous mantle of soundtrack provider, although the tracks work best as augmented movie cues than as a concept album. --Joseph Lanza

5 out of 5 stars Classic Italian soundtrack masters!.......2002-03-13

Goblin were an italian progressive rock band who became best known for their scoring of numerous horror films, most famously for Dario Argento's(some say)best work.A casual listen might lead one to believe they were listening to an old Genesis album, but these songs worked behind scary scenes in movies. And very well, too! This volume has 6 great cuts from Profondo Rosso(DEEP RED),3 from Suspiria,1 from Squandra Antigangsters,2 from Contamination, and 4 from their rock albums(that were plundered for use in films as well). This is a great CD!

4 out of 5 stars Good Compilation But Some Repeated Tracks.......2001-03-26

Here's another good compilation of Goblin's music but be forewarned: the first cut Profondo Rosso is not an alternate take but the original version we all know and love which is on The Goblin Collection. Death Dies is also on The Goblin Collection so there is some repetition here (four other Profondo Rosso cuts are also included). For me, the main reason to have this CD are the three excellent tracks from the Cherry Five debut album which to the best of my knowledge isn't available on CD. Rounding off the CD are good tracks from Suspiria, Roller, Squadra Antigangsters, and Contamination. Overall, this is a good CD to have in any collection.

3 out of 5 stars Interesting, but not indispensible.......2000-06-29

This album offers a plethora of various (previously unreleased) outtakes, different versions and theme tracks from different films. This in itself is an interesting collection, albeit with a few negative aspects:

Many of the outtakes and variations have later been included on the re-releases of the various goblin soundtracks (e.g. "Profondo Rosso" and "Suspiria"). One track ("Il Resvegno del Serpente") is NOT a part of an original soundtrack but a "plain" Goblin track from their debut LP "Roller" (though it has been used as part of a soundtrack in the italian release of the film "Vampyr" later) - still, it has a very different feel to it than the other tracks and thus sticks out in an unpleasant way.

Furthermore, since some variations (e.g. tracks 3 and 4, "Deep Shadows", part 1 and 2,respectively) are slightly repetitive, it can become a bit boring to listen to the complete album in one go.

That is not to say the featured material were not interesting - far from it! However, the order the featured songs have been arranged could be optimized - well, what's a programmable CD player for?

3 out of 5 stars Not the best, but worth having.......2000-04-07

If you're a budding Goblin fan, this is not the album for you. I would recommend Vol. 1 higher because it has a sampling of just about every soundtrack they worked on. This centers on the "Profondo Rosso", "Suspiria", and "Contamination" soundtracks. While a lot of the "Profondo Rosso" tracks are great, especially "Death Dies", "Profondo Rosso", and the remix of the title song, "Suspiria" is not represented very well. The main title theme for "Suspiria" is on Vol. 1 and the tracks here are not very good. "Contamination" takes an acquired taste to appreciate, but "Connexion" is complex in its simplicity. Overall, this is for die-hard Goblin fans only, not for beginners delving into the world of Goblin.

5 out of 5 stars One of the Best cds I've heard all year.......2005-03-26

While I am a fan of Nightwish, Tristania, Theatre of Tradegy which are all GREAT Bands wish Original music to offer. only thing that ties all these bands together is they are all metal and they all have very powerfully vocaled female leadsingers. Yet they all have a different way of expressing their voice. So to really compare all of them isn't really fair. These bands I'm sure have all been around long before Nightwish actually blew the top off this style of metal, but for me personally great cd haven't been able to stop listening to it since I bought it. I Reccomend if you like female vocalists and a little more harmonic edge of metal this is definitely a great band to check out

4 out of 5 stars Gothic Metal with female vocals.......2001-03-18

Darkwell is an Austrian Gothic Metal combo, featuring female vocals, but without grunts. The music of Darkwell is not quite original, but well performed and produced. It exists of nice, clear riffs and simple yet powerful melodies of a pleasant female vocalist. My favorite tracks are 'Realms of Darkness' (9) and especially 'Blackheart' (2), which is a very tastful song of clear background-bass male vocals and heavenly female vocals.

4 out of 5 stars Gothic metal has it's best.......2000-11-28

This band really have great potential they play really good music on the album Suspiria. Sure, that's not too much fresh music, it seems to be a mixture of Tristania, Theatre of Tragedy(early), Within Temptation, Nightwish, The Gathering. They have their unique sound, the keyboard never stops and the riffs of the guitars are heavy and to not forget the wonderful voice of Alexandra(an angel). It's a very contrasting music, you can call it Gothic metal but on my opinion there is a lack of grunts vocals(clear vocals of a male in Gothic metal are less interesting.)

5 out of 5 stars You need this album, it's a total must-have.......2007-05-27

Suspiria was a 1977 Dario Argento horror flick which Goblin did the soundtrack for. This was their third album, but only second soundtrack album (Roller, a non-soundtrack album, was their second album overall) and is regarded as one of their finest albums, and I can't disagree. This music is so great you can forgive the last cut, "Death Valzer", a rather cheesy piano waltz meant for the movie but should've been left off on the album. Goblin really succeeded more than ever in creating a dark and sinister atmosphere that's perfect for horror movies. Cuts like "Witch" and "Sighs" are perfect examples what I'm talking about while "Black Forest" has more of a fusion feel to it, while still having sinister undercurrents. Mellotron pops its head up on a couple of pieces. It's as if Goblin really did their homework when they did Suspiria, it's a truly amazing and original piece of progressive rock that deserves to be in your collection.

5 out of 5 stars Great Soundtrack but Get the DVD Instead.......2005-08-05

This is a great soundtrack, but you can save your money and get a lot more by purchasing the Anchor Bay 25th Anniversary DVD Set of the movie. It includes this soundtrack in addition to the movie, a making-of documentary and booklet. And it costs less than this import CD.

5 out of 5 stars Goblin soundtracks Dario Argento's opus........2005-06-25

Suspiria was Dario Argento's opus. This was a ground breaking movie. It was a visual and audio attack on the senses. He used sight and sound like no other film maker has before ( or since). What made the film remarkable was
the synth pounding music from Goblin. A drum and synth driven soundtrack that was mixed VERY LOUD. The title track as eerie spoken word verses spoken by Claudio Simonetti (the band's leader and keyboard/synth player) because of his command of the english language. As a stand alone disc it's just as creepy. Dario Argento arranged and conducted some of the music (to keep it flowing to the movie) as well. Argento and Goblin made one hell of a team. From time to time, Goblin would reunite with Simonetti and compose music for Dario Argento as a favor to the man who made them world famous.

    Highly recommended.

5 out of 5 stars Wonderfully creepy and experimental pastaprog.......2005-05-13

Goblin's Suspiria is tense, spooky, darkly melodic Italian progressive rock circa 1977. This mostly instrumental album has a palpable sense of dread that takes the listener for a dark and twisted ride. I mean it's just creepy, and unlike most soundtracks Susperia succeeds as music that can be enjoyed separately from the film. In other words it's not background music. The compositions are top notch, the musicians are virtuoso level and there is a lot of timbral variation. Bells, assorted percussion, marimba, guitar, drums and some spooky keys are used effectively to set a properly disturbing mood in compositions that range from the atmospheric to the odd and almost jazz-like. Unusual and interesting.

    5 out of 5 stars awesome!!!.......2004-12-04

Can i say that this is an awesome soundtrack! One of the best!

The voices sometimes reminds me of Diamanda Galas and that's a good thing.

Unfortunately, the movie wasn't as good as the soundtrack but that's another story.

5 out of 5 stars A Brave and Daring work for a unique voice........2001-09-08

I will admit that I did not buy this album because of Brian Asawa. I do have most of his recordings, and am very familiar with his voice, but I was more interested in hearing the ever charming and inventive Ned Rorem in his latest foibles. He does not dissapoint in a crashing melodious melange of 20th century and post romantic textures and timbres. The writing on the several of the pieces is much more coloratura and technical than the Rorem that many people are accustomed to. As a composer, I appreciated the change in scenery without leaving the sonic country that is definately Rorem. The juxtapositioning of the orchestral suite in the middle of a vocal album was a little odd, but the music IS very nice, and does flow with the album order. All in all, and intriguing album. Probably not destined to become a classic for either performer or composer, but worth the price to experience Asawa's technical navigation of weighty and ponderous writing as well as the sheer candor of Rorems writing.

5 out of 5 stars Wonderful rep and well performed.......2000-06-08

This is a collection of wonderful repetoire by Ned Rorem. It consists of 2 song cycles done with chamber orchestra and an orchestral work. Very fresh sounding music with perhaps my favorite countertenor in the world singing. His technique is clean and consistent, his tone is bright and vibrant, and his musicianship is wonderful. Brian certainly has done a wonderful job with this difficult and beautiful music.

5 out of 5 stars "Silva Screen releases film culture European style".......2001-11-28

Believe Silva Screen saved the best for last...the ongoing series comes to an end with "Arthouse Cafe 3"...this time highlighting not just the scores from France, but the entire European community...thus with have "Classic European Film Music" ...some of the best known composers around ~ Enrique Bacalov, Gato Barbieri, Van Den Budenmayer, Klaus Doldinger, Goblin, Maurice Jarre, Gustav Mahler, Ennio Morricone, Zbigniew Preisner, Nino Rota, Ilona Sekacz and Mikis Theodorakis...each composer so different in their approach to the story-line, but always setting the mood for each character to act out his or her part.

There are several stand outs on this compilation that need mentioning ~ "IL POSTINO"(Bacalov)..."LA DOLCE VITA"(Rota)..."Z"(Theodorakis)..."CINEMA PARADISO"(Morricone)..."PHAEDRA"(Theodorakis)..."ARMARCORD"(Rota)..."THE DOUBLE LIFE OF VERONIQUE"(Van den Budenmayer/Preisner)...and my all-time favorite "ZORBA THE GREEK"(Theodorakis), loved the film with Anthony Quinn, and the music was so inspiring, so earthy and festive, with a hint sadness reflections of daily life, with its ups and downs, will never forget the impact this had on me when I first heard his music.

Under the watchful eye of James Fitzpatrick(producer), featuring The City Of Prague Philharmonic...conducted by Paul Bateman and Nic Raine...Mark Ayres producing Electronic Music...so my "film-score-buff" friends, this is a keeper, make room for one of the most outstanding collections to come out of the SILVA SCREEN vaults!

4 out of 5 stars arthouse cafe 3.......2000-09-25

I found this selection of European Film Music harmonically well put together...although I expected to have the themes played a little longer - some are only two to three minutes long - This takes away from the beauty of the melody. Otherwise the combination between the themes in "Il Postino" and "Cinema Paradiso" or "Zorba" combined with "Amarcord" and "Das Boot" makes it a very atractive C.D., offering "the unexpectated".

5 out of 5 stars This is what modern Horror absolutely LACKS!!!.......2001-12-31

This is my all time favorite horror movie soundtrack. Never before have I heard a soundtrack that basically carries a movie so far as this one did in Suspiria. The movie was a haunting and visually stunning piece of work, but I have to admit that the soundtrack gave it the boost over the top to make it a true and LEGITIMATE classic.

I often wonder how modern horror, if that's what you want to call predictable stories with a bunch of Abercrombie and Fitch models getting hacked up (as they very well deserve) by a fellow loser classmate, can even be considered horror at all. All they really are is bunch of high priced cd commercials for modern "rock" bands.

What ever happened to the good old fashioned scary horror soundtrack? Exorcist's music was good as well as Dust Devil, Halloween, Santa Sangre, Creepshow, Nightmare on Elm Street, etc...

Anyway back to Suspiria. This, as I said, is a stunning achievement where horror soundtracks are concerned. Never before have I heard such a dark and sinister sound for a movie and I have collected quite a few obscure horror soundtracks. I was very happy that this became quite available. I recommend it HIGHLY for all occasions and especially Halloween!

      Enjoy!

5 out of 5 stars There is no other music like this ANYWHERE!.......2001-08-31

I first heard Goblin while watching the movie Suspiria -- my friends and I could not believe the crazy soundtrack we were hearing. It was full of screams and bangs. We remembered it for years after we had forgot the plot of the movie. I spent many years looking for these albums and when they were finally released (as imports) I bought all of them and all of Goblin's music ROCKS! It is an eclectic mix of groovy rock, techno, industrial, and well, Goblin. You will never find anything else like this anywhere. The closest I can think of is Revolution 9, by the Beatles.

      5 out of 5 stars A beauty.......1998-10-13

After the success of the funky soundtrack from Dario Argento's DEEP RED, The Goblin's thought up this simple, scarey and fabulas soundtrack for SUSPIRIA. Just hearing that title song makes me quiver in fact, I think that without it soundtrack, SUSPIRIA won't be scarey at all (besides the scene with the witch at the end). I reccomend this soundtrack to any fan of gothic music.

      5 out of 5 stars A terrifying classic!!.......1998-06-23

The third album by Italian soundtrack band Goblin is a sinister treat for all lovers of horror film music. The main title theme is a child-like lullaby set adrift in a sea of hissing voices and crashing rhythms. It perfectly captures the versatility of the Goblin sound. "The Sighs" is an eerie evocation of brooding dread that builds in intensity unil it becomes almost unbearable. Other tracks such as "Witch" and "Markos" continue the descent into sonic doom before breaking into the mellow piano and synthesizer-heavy sounds of "Black Forest." The funky "Blind Concert" and the playful "Death Valzer" round out the disc. Note: on some releases, the tracks "Aquaman" and "Dr. Frankenstein" are included. These are not a part of the "Suspiria" soundtrack. They are, in fact, from the earlier Goblin album "Roller." This album is a classic!! For tuneful terror at its best, look no further than this creepy work from the boys from Italy!!
