Still Level 42, Still Excellent Music.......2005-09-22
I, too, do not understand why some have panned this album. It is excellent by any standards, including Level 42's very high one. I agree that it is an "acquired taste" and takes time to grow on you. In my case, it took about 10 years for that to happen. I dug it up a few weeks ago and found myself thinking it was just a superb album. Up until that time, I saw it as a good, albeit unspectacular Level 42 album. Now I can say it is just plain good. The songs "Man," "Take a Look" and "Staring at the Sun" are among a few of the songs that need time to sink in. Highly recommended if you can find it.
Excellent pop album! .......2004-10-21
This 1988 album was just as catchy and addictive as their efforts from 1986 and 1987. One song I played over and over had loads of straight up guitar strumming and keyboard playing. This was one of their best albums in their decade long career. There's a little bit of a jazzy thing in some cuts, but it showcases their influences in their rock sound.
Everyone please respect the music.......2003-10-21
I'm from Florida and have been a big Level 42 fan since their music could be heard in the US. Staring at the Sun is different because people left or because they were in a bad mood or let's just be honest, all of their albums have a distinct flavor to them. Staring at the Sun is not the best but anyone who remotely has an appreciation for this group should get it anyway. It's fine.
Not bad at all...Just different!.......2000-01-19
This CD is not as bad as some claim. They had just lost two of the four members, and they went in a new direction. This CD does grow on you! I have been a fan for long time and agree that it is not their best work, but it is true Level 42 all the way. Buy it and give this CD the chance it deserves!

Nothing too special here.......2004-11-22
This is an ok CD. The only song of interest here is North and South of the River, which has since been rereleased on The Best of 1990-2000/B-sides. It is a pretty song with lyrics written by Christy Moore, Bono and The Edge. My one complaint is that it fades out. I don't generally like fadeouts anyway. There is another version out there with very different instrumentation and a lead vocal by Christy Moore, with a special guest appearance by Bono and The Edge. I can't remember the name of the CD it's on, but I don't think Amazon has it in its archives. The last track, Your Blue Room, was originally released on Passengers: Original Soundtracks 1 and has since been rereleased on The Best of 1990-2000/B-sides. I really like this one, Bono's low vocal is perfectly in my range, plus hearing Adam's voice at the end is a bonus. In my opinion, the Staring at the Sun [#1] CD is better. It's backed with three remixes of Staring at the Sun plus North and South or the River. But that one instead.
A brilliant track buried in a popular CD single . . ........2000-04-01
Staring at the Sun is the best song off of U2's Pop album. But this CD also includes a track entitled, "North and South of the River." This is a fabulous song! If I had to offer a sample track to illustrate Bobo's captivating voice, I would choose this song. His voice has a terrifying sweetness to it--a romantic coldness that messes with your senses . . . buy this cd for this song. trust me, you won't stop listening to it. i wish this was on the Pop album!

As up-front and unmistakable as Peter Epstein's saxophones are on this globetrotting album, it's his group conception that stands out. Drummer Jim Black, who's made bands like Human Feel and albums like Dave Douglas and the Tiny Bell Trio's Live in Europe and Ellery Eskelin's Jazz Trash sound wildly percussive, plays circles around ordinary time signatures and rhythmic pulses. Epstein's easily a match, spreading sheets of tone over Black's tiny gestures on various clangorous objects, and together, the two make a great pair of polarities for Jamie Saft on accordion and Chris Dahlgren on acoustic bass to bounce off of. There are international touches galore, with Epstein shining when his horn is trained on longer, swiveling phrases. The music's overall feel leans Balkan without ever showing its full flush of influences. At times Epstein commands this compact band as if he's thinking of Ornette Coleman's late-1950s quartet, nearing a full romp of emotion while tethering the pace. Saft's accordion is strong, way off center in a way that speaks to his own work on piano and organ (especially with Bobby Previte's mid-1990s groups). Once you get into this recording, it's unbelievable how crystal clear every detail is and how creatively sculpted the tunes and solos are. A fantastic experience from start to end. --Andrew Bartlett
Customer Reviews:
Pure poetry. Incredible musicianship!.......2000-02-20
The music on this disc is simply breathtaking. It is lush, lyrical, pensive, and yet energized with the most inspired and exciting musical conversations between Peter Epstein and his band. You will not be disappointed; you will be mezmerized! There is a lyricism here that is rarely found anywhere. A minute or two into the first track, "In Your Voice," and you will hear what I mean.
An excellent new album by an excellent young saxophonist........1999-02-01
Peter Epstein may not be a familiar name in the avant-garde jazz scene, but I am sure it is only a matter of time before it is. This first album is remarkable, not for a first album, but as a piece of music. His sound is clear and pure, and there is never a sense of hesitancy that I find follows so many musicians trying to make a sound for themselves. It is simple, yet complex at the same time. He accomplishes what every artists thrives for: a sense of seamlessness, effortlessness. "Peter Epstein" dissapears, and one is left only with the music!!! His compositions are very inovative, but beyond anything else, they are beautiful. The quartet, as well, is untouchable. A must for anyone searching for a new voice in Jazz.

On a Train.......2006-08-03
I think 'On a Train' is beautiful. They have the guts to play the same tune and lyrics looping for 16+ minutes. It's something you don't expect and I found it a joy to linger on the feeling they were trying to share. The melody in the background is bliss.
Get a real TV on the Radio CD.......2005-05-03
Staring at the Sun is a really good song. I'm not going to debate that. It is, however, available on at least two other CD's of theirs that I've seen.
GET ONE OF THEM INSTEAD!
The other two songs on this CD are so strange that you can't listen to them earnestly. You can go ahead and preview them, but I can tell you that what you hear in the preview might as well be the entire song. Don't trick yourself. They don't go anywhere, they don't pick up, what you hear is all there is.

I'm now a huge fan so I have to own everything........2007-05-05
1. Staring at the Sun - I can hear no difference between this and the album version. It's a nice song though.
2. Crash - Different arrangement. Most of UVS songs are realized using guitars. Ralske is probably good at keyboards and like most musicians uses keyboards to figure out his songs so this is a different aural viewpoint.
3. Three Stars - Very Different arrangement. Again there are more keyboards, Piano, on this which allows an interesting new listening.
My copy was so absurdly cheap it's worth it just for this song.
4. Something Better - not on any of the albums if I'm not mistaken. Uncharacteristic ballad sounding like it was written in between the mercy scene in Great Britain and the following psychedelic scene.

Excellent Remixes!.......2004-01-16
I kinda hesitated in the purchase of this single and my decision probably was mainly based on the fact that it was an import. This single made me appreciate "Staring At The Sun" a bit more. I mean I wasn't a big fan of it before, but this CD opened my mind. Anyway, great mixes (perhaps as dance mixes to some) and a good b-side "North And South Of The River."

Album Description
Andrew Calhoun's tenth recording is a return to the songs of his youth, with all but two tracks written before the age of 20. All tracks are studio "take ones", solo voice and guitar, from a session in Portland in August, 2004 and another at Bruce Roper's studio in Chicago in March, 2005. Andrew first saw the cover art - JMW Turner's painting "Goethe's Theory: Light and Colour - Moses Writing the 10 Commandments - Morning After the Deluge" - at the Tate Gallery in London, summer 1977.
Customer Reviews:
Great for Calhoun fans.......2005-10-25
I'm glad John got around to releasing some of his old stuff on CD. I had a tape or two, but they're stuffed in a box somewhere and probably wouldn't play if I could find them. If your new to Calhoun this isn't a bad place to start, though Tiger Tattoo or Where Blue Meets Blue are what I loan people to get started.
John's a good old fashioned folk singer cut from an urban cloth. He writes pretty simple songs mostly about little snippets of life and delivers them in a haunting, melodic voice. Calhoun was close friends with the late, great, Dave Carter and their some similarities in style but I'd place him closer to John Prine in a musical line up.
Anyway Calhoun's a legend among musicians, and his label, Waterbug Records, has a pretty good stable of musicians. I say try `em out.
