A great movie which gives an overview of what occured during the apartheid regime in South Africa. It tells the story of a young black girl living in Soweto, who has dreams to make it as a star before she realises the true reality of the situation around her. Not a morbid movie at all but has its serious moments. The funny side of people living in their situation is portrayed very well.

The Struggle for Justice.......2006-05-08

"Sarafina" is a powerful and moving film about the struggle of South African school kids for survival and freedom against apartheid. It is a story of determination, perseverance and courage against tremendous odds. It teaches us that good will always triumph against evil: that the oppressed will always fight back and die to regain their freedom and dignity. The viewer will have a picture of what life was like under apartheid, ranging from school life, living conditions for blacks, the prisons and the brutal police.

I particularly love the beautiful South African music with its rich and outstanding vocals, percussion, horns and the like. You will love the sounds of veterans musicians like Hugh Masekela, Miriam Makeba.

This is highly recommended for those who want to learn the history of the struggle against social injustice in South Africa.

I am not going to go into explaining the plot. This is a great movie. Leleti Khumalo is an a talented actress. When the world finally recognizes her for the talented beauty she is....Look Out.

Sounds of freedom!.......2005-09-29

`Sarafina!' is the soundtrack to the brilliant musical movie starring Whoopi Goldberg as a radical school teacher in apartheid South Africa, and a bright sunny student named Sarafina. Whoopi allegedly agreed to appear in Sister Act II on the condition that this movie got promoted by Hollywood.

The soundtrack comprises mostly South African music, rich in percussion, organs, horns, guitars, throbbing bass, and the outstanding vocals and harmonizing South African music is famous for.

Opening track `Sarafina!' by Hugh Masakela is a bouncy, rhythmic number performed by the cast. Melodic guitars and darting horns make this a winner. In a similar vein is `Freedom is coming tomorrow'.

`The Lord's prayer' is a dramatic rendition of the famous prayer. It starts off slow and accapella with organ accompaniment, before the rich African rhythm heralds a joyous chorale performance. This was performed by the entire school cast at the start of another school day.

`Thank you mama' is a tender lilting ballad that kicks off with chants and rolling guitars. A love song between mother (Miriam Makeba) and daughter (Leleti Khumalo).

Most of the other songs are typical beautiful South African sounds, ranging from down tempo lament-like songs to joyous celebrations; `Nkonyane Kandaba' (lament-like), `Sabela', `Sechaba', `Safa Saphel' Isizwe' (lament-like), the guitar laden `Vuma Dlozi Lami' and `Lizobuya'.

`One more time' features the fiery vocals of James Ingram, with South African backing vocals which transform what would have otherwise been a bland R&B song.

A brilliant movie and soundtrack!

Buy two copies, you'll wear out the first........2004-11-30

Every once in a while you get in a performer the ability to write and sing good counrty music. And that's what you get with Tony Villanueva and the Derailers. It just doesn't get any better than this. The Derailers make music here that far exceeds most anything that has come out of country music since those who invented it. Straight forward and to the point. Two-steppin', tear-jerkin', beer drinkin', live country music the way it was supposed to be. I could almost taste the cold beer and feel the hips of the sweet hillbilly girls I danced with at their shows every time I listen to this cd. And now that Tony has left the band, I guess thats it. To bad.

Nicely Lo-Fi.......2002-04-05

I bought this after reading an article in the newspaper on them and I like it. It's simple straight ahead country. It is a live-in-the-studio (radio station) album so it's not polished or professional, but that adds to the feeling.
Highlights are the lead off track "Big City Blues", the joyful "Jackpot", "I'll Catch You When You Fall" and the rockabilly-ish "Just One More Time."

Music with heart, a bass line hits deep in the heart, and a rythem you can't keep your feet from moving to. This is the type of music I remember growing up with... Not a bunch of glitz with no heart but something you can listen to over and over to. A friend of mine bought "full western dress" as a birthday present for me when he saw them at Houston's Continental Club. I couldn't stop listening to it and had to pick up my bass to play a few licks. Listening to Lover's Lie, Lost and Found,etc.. and you'll know what I mean. Hey Steel Guitar still lives in Texas thanks to these guys!!!!!!!!! I'm putting this review on every cd because after hearing them on "Full Western Dress" I bought everything else they had on here and was not dissappointed.

The BEST Texas Honkytonk Music.......2001-09-28

This is REAL country. The harmonies are wonderful, the lyrics are amazing, and the music is easy to dance to. What's really amazing about this CD is it's live. These guys are so smooth, you'd think it was recorded in a studio. I have listened to this CD hundreds of times and love it just as much as I did the first time I heard it.

Move the tape recorder closer to the stage!.......2000-05-20

An interesting artifact for gung-ho fans of this honky-tonk outfit (like me), but if you're a new Derailers listener/fan, stick with the studio LPs. Suffers from fidelity problems - muddy mix, inaudible (at times) vocals.

Serves best as a change of pace when rotating frequently between Jackpot, Reverb Deluxe, and Full Western Dress.

On the up side, there are a few songs here not found anywhere else and as the Derailers ascent continues this may become a valuable rarity.

this album is a perfect example of the difference between techno and drum/bass. the syncopated break beat, with all its dance energy, is captured here with some of the least talked about, but greatest effort. it just ain't techno, and that's what we like about it. "Keep Hope Alive" is pure genius, pure unpredictable bass beats. This is an innovative, consistent collection.

The recording genesis of The Jazz Crusaders. .......2005-11-11

[From the liner notes by John William Hardy who was present at the Jazz Crusaders 1961 audition for Pacific Jazz.] "In my listening experience, it has been some time since an unknown and unrecorded group has made a more auspicious debut." I couldn't agree more! Within 3 hours of the start of their audition, the contents of (this) their first LP were being chosen. The resulting tracks were "The Geek" (5:38), "M.J.S. Funk" (5:56), "Coon" (4:19), "Freedom Sound" (8:23), "Theme From Exodus" (3:50)and "That's It" (4:44). The CD version also includes alternate takes of "M.J.S. Funk" (8:14) and "Coon" (5:45).

FREEDOM SOUND introduces us to The Jazz Crusaders: Wilton Felder (tenor sax), Wayne Henderson (trombone), Joe Sample (piano) and Stix Hooper (drums) with guests Roy Gaines (guitar on 4 tracks) and Jimmy Bond (bass) striking an incredibly likable and unique sound landing somewhere between hard bop and soul jazz. The quality and fine execution of their sound is already in place as they play all original compositions (by Felder, Henderson and Sample) with the exception of their excellent take on "Theme From Exodus".

This is decidedly jazzier than the early to mid-70's Crusaders sound which I first came to love. The excellence of FREEDOM SOUND has only ignited the burning desire to undertake the difficult quest of obtaining all the early Jazz Crusaders recordings I can get may hands on. Search high, search low, you'll enjoy this wonderful recording!
