From the first strains of the opening track, "Sisters," it's clear that Betcha Bottom Dollar is not a typical debut album. But then the Puppini Sisters are not a typical pop act, at least not in the 21st century. Their close, three-part harmonies are reminiscent of the vocal groups of the 1930s and 1940s, and particularly the Andrews Sisters. But rather than sounding like an anachronism, the Puppini Sisters merely demonstrate the timelessness of some of these songs. Betcha Bottom Dollar is fresh, fun and vibrant, blowing the dust off of cobwebby classics like "Boogie Woogie Bugle Boy" and "Mr. Sandman". Elsewhere, they also put their own unique stamp on more recent hits, with varying results. While Kate Bush's "Wuthering Heights" and Gloria Gaynor's "I Will Survive" fail to get things swinging, Blondie's "Heart of Glass" and the Smiths' "Panic" are both injected with a fresh new (old?) sound. Much credit must also be given to producer Benoit Charest, who manages to employ a whole host of instrumentation and orchestration, whilst never forgetting to put the voices of the Puppini Sisters front and centre. It might be easy to dismiss the Puppini Sisters' debut as another novelty album, but their intentions and love for the style--like their voices themselves--are crystal clear. --Robert Burrow

A bit expensive for a group of women I never heard of before. But, if you like harmonizing vocals with very 1940's feel, you'll defintely think it's worth it.

I really enjoy listening to the Puppini Sisters. At times they sound almost like the Andrew Sisters, as in Boogie Woogie Bugle Boy, but in Heart of Glass they have their own unique sound. I discovered them by accident on Amazon, and I'm glad I did. I'm planning on buying some of their other albums.

All real vocals in the studio with no technology altering! Like they did back in the day. In Betcha Bottom Dollar's case, the 40's and up! Their harmony's are impeccable as is their choice of song. They obviously resemble The Andrew Sisters and The Boswell Sisters with their renditions of Boogie Woogie Bugle Boy, In The Mood, Bei Mir Bist Du Sc hon, Heebie Jeebies, Jeepers Creepers and Java Jive. In the early 70's Bette Midler, Barry Manilow, Melissa Manchester, Manhattan Transfer and the Pointer Sisters also paid tribute and got their start performing this type of music. Of course they all went on to do many other major achievements in the music industry.

What makes this CD so appealing in this day and age is that they also take songs from other time periods and give them a new twist...or an old one as it is! Listen to how cleverly they recorded Blondie's Heart Of Glass and Gloria Gaynor's anthem I Will Survive. You never heard them like this...and how refreshing! I am also impressed with other selections like the reworking of The Smiths Panic and Kate Bush Wuthering Heights which were big UK hits.

Also included is Sway which has made a comeback via Michael Buble and Tu Voi Fa L'Americano made famous in The Talented Mr Ripley movie. There is also a fabulous version of Mr. Sandman which was recorded by The Chordettes, McGuire Sisters and Emylou Harris. Last but not least is the perfect song to open this set, Sisters, which was recently covered by Bette Midler & Linda Ronstadt on Bette's Rosemary Clooney tribute.


These girls are awesome and it will be a pleasure to watch them blossom into and awesome vocal trio. They are currently working on a second CD with all of the above and some originals. Can't wait...til then enjoy

P.S.(Puppini Sisters) I love you!.......2007-07-03

My brother found this recording for $10 in Bangkok - not a counterfeit. The sisters are precious, the more I listen to their songs the more I appreciate the nostalgic music brought up-to-date. I hope they turn up the heat and let their harmonious voices really loose on their next recording. The background music does not do justice to their singing. In any case, I would buy any recording they care to make.

Not as good as new material, but still good.......2007-07-14

Although it is not as good an album as Anchor Drops or Safety in Numbers, it is a collection of B-sides and songs they have played live for years. None of the songs were new, many were recorded during the Safety sessions, as the album says. Therefore, it is not a lack of talent that this album is not great, it is the fact that it is no new material, just material released for the first time as studio versions. Umphrey's live is still amazing and they are an extremely talented group. See them live before judging a studio album. The same goes for most jam bands.

Promising......But lacks depth.......2007-07-02

I was excited to get this album because I was hoping for some rocking tunes that had been left out of Safety in Numbers. I quickly found out differently. The title track definately rules. Its mostly downhill from there. Bright Lights is a song that has potential, but with the overproduced sound found throughout this album, it disappoints. Song 3 is filler, song 4 is even worse filler. Higgins is one of my favorite Umphrey's songs and it is great, except for the ending. I wish they would've extended the jam and solo without all of the weird noises and such. From there, Memories of Home is an OK slow tune, but not what I was hoping for from Umphrey's. Atmosfarag = more filler. Red Room is the highlight for me for the latter half. The new rendition of Intentions Clear is pretty cool but nothing new there. Home is yet another soft and decent song. Divisions is classic Umphrey's and seems a bit out of place on this one. I have listened to this album probably 15 times and it just lacks for me. Umphrey's, please bring on the rock and groove on the next one.

A Taste of New and Old Umphrey's: Well Worth the Money!.......2007-05-15

Umph's newest album not only displays their newer, more mainstream style, but also catches the group performing some truly classic tunes. Including cameos from some of the best: Joshua Redman, Jeff Coffin, Bela Fleck, and more, disc 1 was the best pull of The Bottom Half. Having said that, disc 2 truly makes this album a must for Umph fans, as it catches them in a raw, completely candid nature. I strongly recommend this work for music listeners of all kinds; You will find something for you in this album.

A real disappoiontment..........2007-05-13

This album is a real disappointment. I have Umphrey's first album, which made me think they were talented. This double album proves they are not. No creative depth. Their tank is empty.

Extraordinary diversity.......2007-04-25

This album is yet another exhibit of extraordinary musical diversity from Umphrey's McGee. The previous album (Safety In Numbers) was a rendering of lyricism and poetry showing that the singer-songwriter thing is a very important aspect of what they do. The Bottom Half shows the strength of UM's diversity through a mixture of acoustic, classical, and electric guitars, incredible percussion, powerful song writing, elegant piano composition, saxophone, banjo (including a notable cameo appearance), strings, and creative production. There is a tendency to compare a new band to a previous or familiar sound. Umphrey's McGee has no comparison--they stand alone as the most diverse sound of the 21st century.

It really takes you to Kyoto! .......2007-05-22

I have bought many CDs with Asian melodies, and this is one of my favorites. Listening to it from beginning to end really takes me to Kyoto, Japan, the mecca of zen gardens and ancient Japan. I had never heard of Kokin Gumi before my purchase, and they do such a great job of bringing out the beauty of the various traditional Japanese instruments. My favorites tracks are "Flower" and "Birds." Finally, it is a great CD to have playing in your car during long, stressful drives. Buy it, you won't regret it!

Music for Tai Chi accompaniment.......2006-09-01

I bought this at Christmas time in '05 for my new sound equipment in my shop (hair stylist) and haven't changed it since. I am able to listen to it all day because it has no break in the music, and is extremely "non-repetative". There is no "oh, it's playing over" realization...Some of my clients will not let me talk during their appointment anymore because they enjoy it so much...soooo relaxing!

This is the second CD I bought of John Gorka's music, and I really am enjoying it a lot. He has a nice, pleasant voice, and his songs are worth listening to. Being a fan of acoustic music, this one really is "right up my alley". I highly recommend it to those who love acoustic music, and appreciate lovely melodies and sensitive lyrics.

Title track, "Raven in Storm" and "Full of Life" are the top tracks in my opinion. The whole thing is good! There is not one BAD John Gorka album! The only one I don't have in my collection is the first one, "I Know." I agree with Amazon's assessment, "Gorka's songs are studded with dry wordplay, precise imagery, and sudden glimpses of deep feeling." This hits it on the head. He is a witty musician who very creatively and artistically talks and sings about everyday life. Like a good writer like John Updike does, Gorka, through his song, makes everyday experience come to life.

This are songs of late adolescence, full of power and anger. Like an old Rimbaud, Gorka here delivers the main course. He never did it again in his later cd's. This is his best one. Better than anything he's done since, and probably better than anything he'll do.

Gorka's greatest work -- Stacked with his greatest songs.......2001-02-11

After seeing John Gorka on "Austin City Limits" in 1993, I began following each release. I now believe that "Land of the Bottom Line" is his finest work. The release contains his greatest love songs, often times in somber themes. While his recent productions still weave musical genius throughout, they are distracted at times by an overuse of percussion and background instruments. Gorka is at his best as a pure acoustic performer, which is the dominant presentation in "Land of the Bottom Line". In songs such as "Armed with a broken heart", "I saw a stranger with your hair", and "Love is our cross to bear", John combines his haunting baritone voice with amazing guitar playing.

In their early careers, some artists stack many of their great songs into one release. In "Land of the Bottom Line", Gorka provides a consistent template of his incredible skills with at least half of his greatest songs ever. In fact, many of the requests he accepts at concerts come from this CD. This is a must buy for all acoustic afficionados and for anyone who is not aquainted with John Gorka.

I just bought this CD and already love all the songs. My favourites are Planxty Lady Wrixon, Planxty George Brabazon, and Faire Mehli. There are fastpaced songs, slower songs, haunting ones, romantic ones, warmth and cold and all telling stories. If you like instrumental music that brings you into another world, you should definitely look into this CD.

This is the first celtic music CD that I have ever owned. And what a wonderful way to start! The music is mystical and magical. And once you start listening, it almost feels -- familiar. My favorite track is Planxty George Brabazon -- I don't know how to folk dance, but that track makes you want to get up and try! If you enjoy wild, soulful, earthy music --this CD will not disappoint you.

Over the past year I've gone back and tried to find some good music that I missed the first time around. I've been buying vinyl and cds since the early 1970s. Over the years I probably had 5000 discs in my collection, but had never picked up any Robert Wyat. I was peripherally aware of him, primarily because of "Shipbuilding" I suppose. I used to scoure classified ads in Hot Wax and Trouser Press. I always saw his albums listed, but I wasnt interested in them. Then in 2006 I picked up "Rock Bottom" and the scales fell from my eyes. How did I miss this album for so many years? This is hands down the best album I picked up last year (out of about 80), and is certainly one of the ten most beautiful that I own. I am embarrassed that I called myself a knowledgable listener while not having heard this album. I confess my guilt and look forward to expanding my Robert Wyatt collection in 2007.

I've been a fan of the Soft Machine for a few years now and decided to check out what was described to me as Robert Wyatt's "singer/songwriter" work. That title carries some connotations (not bad) that led me to believe that what I was going to hear was a voice with an acoustic guitar, but with Wyatt's unique voice and creative stamp. After getting to know this amazing album, I can definitely say that "singer/songwriter," as it's usually used (from folk artists to less-worthy lite rock) doesn't really accurately describe this music. I guess I can't complain too much though, since Wyatt wrote the songs and he's singing. As usual, so much for labels, which this album proves in spades--there's no use trying to classify it, and to cage this bird with a label would only restrain its wild beauty.

Rock Bottom is a great record. As a fan of Soft Machine, I was pleased to hear his familiar unique voice and also his quirky, sometimes impressionistic lyrics in a less psychedelic jazzy jam style than the Machine records. There is jazz influence and playing on this album, but I can't say it would be helpful to call the whole thing jazz. Like I said before, labels won't do this music justice.

This album is great, but it's pretty weird too. If you're a big classic rock radio fan, you'll probably be turned off on first listen, but then again most people will probably take a few listens to really get familiar with this music. Besides, if you're exclusively a radio rock fan, you probably won't find this record. Either way, don't give up after one listen.

The opening track is layered with synths and wanders slowly as Wyatt curiously describes a lover using ocean metaphors and ends with the conclusion that they are both mad. It's a pretty trippy track with lots of texture and a gripping lyric. What really makes this track priceless for me is Wyatt's wordless vocal solo that closes the song. What a voice! The second track contains some more great scatting, as Wyatt makes his voice sound quite a bit like a brass instrument. Innovative use of his voice and other instruments paired with some desolate lyrics bring this one closer to expression of his feelings after the accident that paralyzed him from the waist down.

"Little Red Riding Hood" is great, starting with a bizarre, unique brass arrangement, with stream-of-consciousness lyrics that really provide the listener with a window into his feelings about his physical and mental state. The backwards vocal at the end really sounds great along with the galloping groove set first by the trumpets. The companions "Alifib" and "Alifie" present some more innovation with a whispered word as percussion and another atmospheric soundscape that leads into another bizarre lyric about eating Alifie (I guess you'll probably have to listen to it yourself to get the idea) both sung by Wyatt and with a spoken word section. The closing track, "Little Red Robin Hood" has some really wicked guitar and yet another quirky vocal a cappella closing section.

I'm pretty well aware that this description fails to capture the essence of Wyatt's masterpiece and also makes it sound pretty strange as well. Unfortunately, like many classic works of art, Rock Bottom has to be experienced to be appreciated and better understood. Words really can't do it justice, of course, but my hope is that the words in this review at least encourage you to check it out and have the unique and awesome experience of listening to this music for yourself. It might not be mainstream enough to please everybody, but if everything sounded the same, records like Rock Bottom wouldn't be so special. Keep your mind and ears open wide and I think you'll be rewarded. Hope you check it out!

A deeply reflective work.......2006-08-19

Released in 1974, this wonderful album is quite possibly Robert Wyatt's best solo effort and showcases his excellent writing abilities. Sadly, this brilliant work was released following a terrible accident in which Robert fell out of a window, broke his spine, and became wheelchair bound - in fact, the basic shape of the album came together during his 8 month hospital stay. Overall, this album has a warm, spacey, and intimate feel and is very stripped down with superb production by none other than Nick Mason of Pink Floyd fame. It is a personal favorite come to think of it.

Along with Robert (synthesizers, piano, vocals, guitar), several musicians associated with the Canterbury rock scene played on the album including Richard Sinclair (bass); Hugh Hopper (bass); Mike Oldfield (guitar); Fred Frith (guitar); Ivor Cutler (voice, baritone concertina); along with Gary Windo (bass clarinet, tenor); Mongezi Feza (trumpet); Laurie Allen (drums); and even Robert's wife Alfreda Benge (voice). The performances on the album are all excellent but very restrained and soft - almost contemplative in fact. Discreet synthesizer washes color a lot of the album, along with delicate percussion and acoustic piano parts. Robert's vocals are...well...very Robert - I like them quite a lot actually.

The six tracks merge seamlessly into one another and are almost hypnotic at times, with subtle electronic effects and spacey synthesizer parts accenting each piece. The overall tone of the album hovers somewhere near a soft drone, although it is occasionally punctuated by an excellent bass guitar/electric guitar line, odd spoken word passage, and drum part here and there, but nothing overbearing in the least. This is a very reflective album with a touch of sadness (perhaps), and the quiet music reflects this mood well.

All in all this is a superb album from the Canterbury scene that sounds nothing like music typically associated with the genre. Very highly recommended.

This is one of those albums that you let play all the way through over and over again. What a great sophmore album. The music is really cookin on this album. It's alot more uptempo and alot more soulful-rock than the first album. Wendy and Lisa were always making music that was so ahead of it's time. Well alot of Prince related artists were always ahead of their times too. If you like ladies who can rock, groove, sing and write their own music then you must get this cd.

Released in 1989, this is what many call Wendy and Lisa's "funk" album. After working with Prince it was pretty much inevitable that Wendy and Lisa would make an album like "Fruit At the Bottom". It's funky, it's clever, and it's fun. Not to say that this is a complete ripoff of Prince or the Minneapolis Sound, while embracing both they still managed to keep their own sound, which is quite impressive. They also added Cole (sister of Lisa) and Susannah (sister of Wendy) for backing vocals and drummer Carla Azar, giving this album a "fuller" sound.The albums kicks off with "Lolly Lolly" (later remixed by Prince). With somewhat nursery rhymish, silly, fun, and girly lyrics and funky/folkish/countryish music, it's a heck of a song. The girls even attempt rap on this one. One of the most genre-blending songs done by the two. Also a great example of how much of a good idea it was to add Susannah in the vocal department, adds more "soul".Then we're onto "Are You My Baby", which contains two bass lines (kid you not) and some impressive vocals by Wendy.Next there's "Saticfation", a colaboration with The Time's guitarist Jesse Johnson. Another funky gem.Next there's "Always In My Dreams", the only song to feature a complete lead vocal by Lisa (unfortunate, I know). Dreamy and sweet, this'll have you swaying. Though Lisa does go off in pitch a few times, it's stil a beautiful song. Next there's "Everyday", which is sort of hard to explain. Just think of something that could've been recorded for their solo album but more upbeat. Would be very interesting to hear this sung by Prince......Anyways, we're at "From Now On (We're One)", very pop-rock. The first verse is sung by Lisa, the rest sung by Wendy. It features some impressive drums by Carla and impressive guitar "wails" by Wendy. The girls can rock.Now we're onto "Tears of Joy", an edit wouldn't have hurt. It's gorgeous, though, gorgeous.Next is "Someday I", which features VERY impressive harmonies. Somewhat offbeat, but perfect at the same time.Next is "I Think It Was December". Another song with great harmonies (they sure were having some good days in the vocal department back then). It features Lisa's piano playing(ALWAYS a treat) and somewhat spiritual lyrics. Gosphel meets pop.Now we're onto the closer and the titletrack, "Fruit At The Bottom". Yeah, I know you're looking at the title and going "what does that mean?" I'm not gonna say, let's just say Prince, er, " writing style" sorta rubbed off on them. The chorus is a little annoying but part of it's charm at the same time. All in all this album is more solid and enjoyable than their debut, leave it to them take the influence of the type of music they played for a large part of the 80s and still make it their own.This album shows that they were no ammatures, Prince really does hire the best.

Get A Little Satisfaction!!.......2002-04-12

This sophomore effort from Wendy Melvoin and Lisa Coleman is one of their most assured efforts to date. I was cruising some record shops in Los Angeles during the summer of '89 and found this gem on vinyl. Remembering how much I loved their gorgeous 1987 debut, I ripped open the plastic, dropped the needle and was surprised at the agressive, funky new music these women created. While one misses the icy, glacial, ethereal musings of the first album, the pleasures found on fruit are a joy to themselves. "Lolly Lolly" is a slamming funk/rock number that incorporates rap, R&B and pop into a seamless whole. "Are You My Baby" is one of the few songs in popular music to boast 2 basslines! (listen closely to the instrumental passage that opens the song) and "Satisfaction" features Jesse Johnson (of The Time) on guitar and backing vocals. The soulful, floating ballad "Always In My Dreams" is remniscent of the work on their debut and "Everyday" is a slithery funk jam that recalls mid-80's Prince. My favorite track here is the straight rock/pop of "From Now On We're One" featuring a gorgeous lead vocal by Lisa Coleman on the first verse and an insistent, itchy guitar lick by Wendy that will stick in your brain forever. "Tears Of Joy" is another great, acoustic guitar driven ballad that has a hypnotic riff and drum loop supporting Melvoin's gentle vocal. The remainder of "Fruit...." is astounding and features great singing (the gospel soul of "I Think It Was December")lyrics of hope and triumph (the wistful "Someday I") and Carla Azar's slamming drums (the closing title track, also features some squealing, siren-like guitar wails by Wendy) that make this a remarkable and thoroughly enjoyable LP to listen to from start to finish. A great collection of top notch tunes!

Time Between Trains is an album of small virtues. The production by Darell Scott is spare and beautiful. Scott adorns each song with subtly idiosyncratic touches (Scottish bagpipes, Indian tablas) that add surprising textures. This is an album for travelers between allegiances, romantic and otherwise. Throughout, one hears mandolins, bouzoukis, trumpets, and violins, yet the overall effect is intimate. Unfortunately, Werner is a better vocalist than songwriter. Some tunes are melodically flat and lyrically pedantic. Strangely, she finally lets her hair down with the hidden track, "When They Make a Movie of My Life." Seemingly intended as a joke, it has much more going on melodically than many of her originals. --Anthony Bonet

Better vocalist than songwriter indeed... I beg to differ! Okay, so every Susan Werner album has a few "phoned-in" songs... But did the reviewer even listen to "Petaluma Afternoons" or "Courting the Muse?" Melodically flat - maybe a couple of tracks aren't as inspired as the others. But who could listen to the poignantly organic rise and fall of "Sorry About Jesus" and feel anything approaching flat? And I suppose by "lyrically pedantic" he means that her songs contain words your average 13-year-old wouldn't know. How many songs do you know that contain the word "serotonin," after all? But to me this is exactly the sort of thing that makes Susan Werner such an original. She hops elegantly between folk, country, blues, and any number of other genres. But above all, what makes Susan's music shine is the sincerity of it. She doesn't mass-produce slick danceable tunes or schmaltzy tearjerkers - she simply writes from the heart, and this album I think contains some of her most inspired songs. Honestly though, any recording is going to sell Susan short. She's a live performer by nature, meant to be seen in person. Still, this album, of all of hers, is about as close as you can come to that experience thanks to the close-miked intimacy that really captures her expressive voice. If you like folk or "traditional" country/bluegrass, and enjoy compassionate, sincere songwriting, this is well worth buying.

This gal is unpleasant to listen to. I wouldn't pay to see this entertainer. Very boring folk like tune to her songs. Get into something more interesting like native beats or world music, but I see no talent in a gal on the stage with a guitar or someone with a voice like Susan Werner.

all aboard this 'Train'.......2001-11-08

Having been a Susan Werner fan since Spring 1995, (one of those times where you don't know the artist but the disc called out to me: "The Last of the Good Straight Girls," and I bought it sound-unheard) I feel this release best represents Werner's strengths. This is a disc full of songs depicting various emotionally-based passages through life: adolescent discomfort (Sorry about Jesus); leaving home for college (Like Bonsai); relationship dissolution (Bring 'Round the Boat, Can't Let You In); post-relationship dissolution (Time between Trains; Old Mistake). Werner acutely communicates in a universal way, the observations and foibles that speak to anyone who cares to listen or hear.

The only mis-step (if you can call it that) is the inclusion of "Vincent," Don McLean's paean to the artist. It's a great song, but it doesn't really grab you the way Werner's originals do. It does, however, display her great taste in cover material.

Largely unavailable is her latest disc, "New Non-Fiction (Oct.2001)," but if your awareness about Werner is in the early stages, I highly recommend this disc. The Amazon reviewer emphasizes her vocal skills (with good reason, she trained in operatic vocals before taking this detour), which is true; what he didn't mention was that Werner can sing folk, pop, torch and jazz with equal aplomb. And to her credit, live versions of songs from this and other albums typically do not resemble the studio versions. This can rub folks the wrong way, if they buy Werner's discs based on what they heard live. But I encourage you to relax that response, and in the long run, you will not be dissapointed. Werner is a rare treat to see live, and for that experience, "Live at the Tin Angel" might be a better place to start than "Time Between Trains" if one has a total lack of Susan Werner music in their collection. For the past six years, she has stood the test of time (things still sound fresh on the 100th listen as they did on the 2nd). This is a rare gift indeed.

I caught one of Susan's songs on WMVY (one of my all-time favorite radio stations, happily now available via web radio), and completely fell in love with her music.

Each time I listen to this album I hear something completely different. In that respect her music reminds me of Seal - haunting, real, comforting, full of great images and stories.... she may not have Seal's incredible voice, but she is a great artist in her own style!

Susan Werner's music takes you there. Whether it be Petaluma, a freshman college dorm, or a memory of an old flame - you can see it and feel it. Susan is an amazing musician. I wish that I had found her years ago!
