Music, it would seem, has been in her blood from the start.
Her new album is the first, fully polished Jessica Molaskey album.
A mix of jazz standards, reinterpreted plus some new stuff.
She has rapidly become one of the most talked about voices on the jazz circuit, thanks to her smooth, sultry vocal style, and her ability to really inhabit the songs that she sings.
This CD is an instant smash among the jazz fraternity, and for sure will catapult Jessica into the limelight she seemed born to live and work with.
Along with her hubby, acclaimed guitarist and vocalist John Pizzarelli, there are some other great jazz stars like sax master Harry Allen to help Jessica to take off.

great mix of songs.......2007-05-11

i love this cd. it is a terrific mix of new and old. the songs are wonderfully reimagined. summer, highland falls is dynamite. sitting in limbo is wonderfully pensive and deep. i don't get the unchartered territory business. this cd takes familiar songs to new places and quite cleverly. kudo, to mis. molaskey.

The time to push the envelope has arrived.......2007-05-10

PROS: Producer and guitarist John Pizzarelli, also Ms. Molaskey's husband, is obviously familiar with the singer and her strengths and has worked with her in the past. CONS: Maybe it's time for someone to shake up the apple cart and escort Ms. Molaskey into uncharted territory. That said, here's a blow-by-blow rundown. 1). Sitting In Limbo: As a fan of reggae and Jimmy Cliff in particular, I lean toward letting the man's work stand on its own and away from cover versions. Jessica has a sweet, clear, soothing voice, and I've got to believe that a large segment of her core audience will be able to appreciate her version on its own merits. 2). Heavy Cloud, No Rain: This album's first step in the Peggy Lee "Fever" direction. Go ahead...try to listen to this and not think of Ms. Lee or her signature song. Good luck with that. 3). Summer, Highland Falls: I'm not a Billy Joel fan (sorry, folks) so I can listen to this without comparing it to the original. It kind of plods along without ever hitting a peak. 4). Ooh Child: The Five Stairsteps as a meditative, slow, fragile ballad? That's kind of like doing a smooth jazz version of a Jimmy Cliff song. Wait, she DID that...on track one. 5). I Want To Be Happy: The first "jump blues / scat" style song on the album. I'm not a fan of the genre so I can't offer an objective appreciation of the track. Pizzarelli stretches out here on guitar. 6). There Will Never Be Another You: A nice, simple piano ballad with the emphasis exactly where it should be: on the purity of Jessica's voice. 7). Knowing You: Another opportunity for Pizzarelli to showcase his talents on the guitar. A pleasant track. 8). I'm Gonna Sit Right Down: A somewhat jarring "ragtime" piano intro gives way to torch balladry. 9). The Circle Game: Once again I'm at a crossroads...as a lifelong fan of Joni Mitchell and her collected works, would I rather hear Joni sing this song or Jessica? Don't get me wrong...it's very nicely done, in the same way that Ann Hampton Callaway did a nice rendition of Van Morrison's "Moondance" with her sister Liz...so you're either a hard-core devotee of the originals or someone who can appreciate them AND cover versions. Not bad, not enough to make me turn my back on Joni. 10). Walkin' After Midnight: Sorry...Patsy Cline did this song to perfection...beyond perfection, if that's even possible. Rate my review as "not helpful" if you must, but Patsy named it and claimed it and this slower version...as competent as it may be...is living in the shadow of greatness, not casting its own. 11). Hearts And Bones: Once again, I'm not a Paul Simon fan (yes, as improbable as that may sound, it is possible). It's another "Quite Storm" workout, but just like the Billy Joel song, the complex lyrics don't lend themselves to a "smooth" approach. 12). Morning Has Broken: A low-key finale to a low-key album. I now declare myself ready to hear what Jessica is capable of when surrounded by a new creative team. a "5" on a "5 Scale" for the voice, a "3" for her choice of material and the arrangements, so an overall "4" for "Sitting In Limbo." Take a RISK, Jessica...a big, big risk like Tierney Sutton did with her all-Sinatra "Dancing In The Dark." You'll be glad you did, and so will we, your fans.

The Throwing Muses might've sounded at their inception like a fidgety, angle-heavy postpunk dream (cofounders Kristin Hersh and Tanya Donelly were mere teenagers!); as a trio in 1996 they sound particularly fierce. With Donelly long gone from the band, the former quartet has an oddly fatter sound, maybe thanks to their major-label experience in big-sounding studios with big-minded production. But with Limbo, Hersh, bassist Bernard Georges, and drummer David Narcizo not only founded their own label, Throwing Music, they settled into existence as a rock band that sounds as if they're on the verge of a spastic explosion. Musically, the three make grandly tense music, with Hersh alternating windy sing-song vocals and a forking, brusque delivery that reaches near-shouting levels in swift bursts. The Muses haven't sounded as frontally propelled in some time, here dashing into the loud bash of a song's chorus and there sticking to more regularly timed tempos and rhythms. There's little musical indication here that the band was on the verge of breakup, and Hersh's solo career seems a continuation of any of several Muses threads followed on Limbo (or on The Real Ramona or Hunkpapa, for that matter). --Andrew Bartlett

Limbo sounds more like falling in love feels than any album I have ever heard. By turns soothing, exhilarating, and thought-provoking, it is my favorite Muses album of all time. The complex rhythm structures and Hersh's angular vocal delivery are still there, but it's the band's balletic dynamic sense on this album that leaves me reeling every time.

A disappointment except for a single song (but what a song!).......2006-10-11

The 1996 album LIMBO was the Throwing Muses' last full-length release before entering on a long hiatus due to the unbearable expenses of keeping an indie rock act together. The line-up here is the 1990s "power-trio" of original Muses musicians Kristin Hersh on guitar and David Narcizo, along with Bernard Georges on bass. I found the album very disappointing from a band that has so often shown true greatness.

Somewhere before the recording of this album, Kristin Hersh's voice lost her charm. Her unpolished delivery had always lent authenticity to the savageness of her lyrics, but here she seems to have lost any of that ferocity. Instead, she sounds unmotivated and occasionally we get really weird, almost muppet-like intonations. That's a major blow against the album. Another flaw is the unimpressive songwriting, with the opening "Buzz" lacking direction and "Ruthie's Knocking" seeming like an attempt to write another "Bright Yellow Gun". And finally, the production is overly balanced towards the guitars. David Narcizo is one of the finest drummers in the history of rock, but here the power of his beats (which one can tell is buried there) is drowned out by unremarkable guitar fuzziness. About the only entirely satisfying movement here is "Shark", apparently an expression of rage at having to put up with an alcoholic. Possessing a fine structure and performed with awesome tightness, it ranks among the Muses finest songs. Is it worth it to buy an album just for a single song? "Shark" suggests that might be the case.

If you're new to Throwing Muses, I can't recommend enough their first four albums: the self-titled debut (1986), HOUSE TORNADO (1988), HUNKPAPA (1990), and THE REAL RAMONA (1991). Each is not entirely perfect, but solid enough, and put together they reveal a band of immense capability. The band lost its way with LIMBO, explore it after you're sure that you're a committed Muses fan.

Kristen Hersh should be a huge star . . ........2004-10-26

. . . but the popular music world is full of shallow, plasticky dreck and the Muses will forever remain a relatively underground band for those with discriminating tastes in rock. And let it be known that LIMBO does indeed rock. The album has a brash attitude that I love and it comes through in Hersh's fantastically raw riffage as well as her unique voice.

The songs largely concern characters who are living a certain rough & tumble lifestyle - the "limbo" of the title - which can easily be interpreted as a druggie's way of life. Some characters are desperate, but many are recklessly carefree. There are other tunes dealing with relationships and lovers that are stunning and gorgeous.

I can see how some fans may prefer the Muses of old that they know and love, but I think their albums have generally gotten better and better over time (which says a lot since they were very good when they first started in their early teens). I love that early stuff, but later albums like RED HEAVEN rock harder and naturally have more confidence and maturity. LIMBO has got to be one of their best and may even be their masterpiece.

Weak for their standards.......2004-10-02

It's quite difficult to convince someone today how important have the Throwing Muses been for rock - female and in general - throughout the 80's and the early 90's when never did important numbers of people buy their albums . Still , one could say it was meant to be that way and they were destined to become a cult secret between eclectic music listeners , all fascinated by dark things . Maybe then it's because of the fact that their music initially needs some extra energy and patience to get into . Occasional cd buyers who help Bon Jovi and Lenny Kravitz conquer the charts every now and then or people who listen music once in a while , during a ride in the car simply won't get what this band is about . Downloading isolated tracks for the internet simply won't do either . You have to buy their stuff , study them . Once you see the whole picture though you'll instantly get hooked .

Limbo now , is actually album number eight for the Boston band . Kristin Hersh had nothing to prove to nobody . Childhood friend David Narcizo was still on the drums sit . Ex guitarist Tanya Donelly was preparing for the release of her first solo album . Bassists Leslie Langston and Fred Abong had deceided to continue their lives outside the music business long time ago . Bernand Georges was now playing the four-chord instrument . In past efforts the Muses combined that sense of madness that had always been their trademark with power ( " University " ) , sorrow ( " Hunkpapa " ) and ethereal nature ( " The Real Ramona " ) . On Limbo they sound plain schizophrenic .

Many fans who adore them will simply be satisfied by watching Hersh , a strangely happy woman perfoming a grey, unhappy rock song in the video clip of " Ruthie's Knocking " . " Tango " ' s lyrical agenda ( " thank you for chaining me into bed / that was sweet " ) and cold , impersonal vocals are indicative of the record's mood . Not that the energy is not once again here and there are many good ideas to notice ( you would never have imagined how well a cello could fit in a rock tune like " Buzz " ) . You can tell that the songwritting is strong and that there's something special in there but often , it's simply unpleasant listening .

In conlusion , " Limbo " suffers from the same things which made Belly's " King " so problematic in the first place : it deserves respect for sounding messy by choice and carries the power of the mysterious personallity behind it but lacks the overall power to make it matter outside the artist's fanbase .

Chubby Checker's original dancing classics like "The Twist," "Pony Time," "Limbo Rock," and "Let's Twist Again" were issued originally on Parkway/Cameo Records. These classics hits never have been issued on CD stateside, but I thought I would try a European issue to see if it contained the real thing. Unfortunately, it doesn't. If you want the Chubby Checker hits you've danced and listened to your whole life, you won't find them here!

Little bit of Jazz, Country, Rock, Pop, and a whole lot of Soul.......2005-09-17

Soul Limbo was somewhat of a milestone for Booker T. & the MGs. Until 1968, the Stax label in Memphis where the MGs played on countless hits by Otis Redding, Sam & Dave, Albert King, Wilson Pickett, and so many others, had been distributed by the mighty Atlantic label in New York. When this deal ended, there was a flurry of activity in Soulsville U.S.A. as the label rushed to get as much product as possible on the market.

So Stax was in "limbo", and the MGs saw the company through. The carribean flavored title track (later famously used as the theme for Cricket on the BBC) was among the first hits (along with Johnnie Taylor's "Who's Makin' Love") that Stax scored.

The MGs' albums at this point had been getting better and better peaking with 1967's terrific Hip Hug-Her. This has their usual mix of inspired covers and cutting edge originals.

One of their most well known and highest charting records was their epic rendition of Dominic Frontiere's "Hang 'em High" from the Clint Eastwood film. There's also the infectious "Be Young, Be Foolish, Be Happy", a funkdified reworking of "Eleanor Rigby", and an absolutely superb Jazz piano showcase for Booker T. Jones with the standard "Willow Weep For Me".

Guitarist Steve Cropper's and especially drummer Al Jackson, Jr.'s work here once again affirms their superiority over ordinary humans. Jackson really stands out on Aretha Franklin's "(Sweet, Sweet Baby) Since You've Been Gone" and both are on fire on the smokin' original "Heads or Tails" and the Jones and William Bell written Albert King classic "Born Under a Bad Sign" which also features great B-3 organ bursts from Booker. Their versions of the Franklin and King songs makes the album worth searching out, as the other tracks already mentioned (and the great original "Over Easy", the B side to "Hang 'em High") all appear on the 1997 box set Time Is Tight.

They just don't make 'em like this anymore. This is one of the finest instrumental sets ever released and one of the most essential in the discography of Booker and his Memphis Group.

Their second best album!.......2000-04-02

"Soul Limbo" is the first and best album of the MG's later Stax period (the earlier records were released on Stax but owned by Atlantic--it's a long story). As on the earlier "Hip Hug-Her" album, the mix of up-tempo to slow/atmospheric tunes is perfect and only "Foxy Lady" now seems kind of weak. The playing and the sound is more refined and "jazzier" than on the earlier LP's. The MG's version of "Be Young Be Foolish" is so much better than the original vocal version! The cover photo is an incongruous classic along the lines of Sonny Rollins' "Way Out West" cover photo. Putting a bunch of Memphis studio cats on the beach with a lovely lady was an inspired idea!
