This 1965 album is where vocalist and harmonica player Junior Wells comes into his own. An early collaboration with Buddy Guy, the two of them sum up the 1960s funk-rock-blues that lay ahead. Hoodoo Man Blues inspired Paul Butterfield, Eric Clapton, and a host of other musician-fans. Wells and Guy don't shy from creating James Brown-funkified blues, or from putting a rock edge to their blues; but neither do they shy from traditional blues. Their version of "Good Morning Little School Girl" is a proper update--still menacing, with less of a country blues feel. Also not to be missed is the instrumental workout "Chitlin Con Carne." --Robert GordonCustomer Reviews:

This is Hank Jr. in his late-'70s/early-'80s version, that brief moment after he'd discovered a sound and persona that wasn't just inherited but before he devolved into a good-old-boy caricature. Not that Bocephus isn't engaging in some posturing here already--the preposterous "Texas Women," for example, could stand unaltered as a Saturday Night Live parody of redneck lechery. More often, though, the 10 hit singles on this disc combine a low-key brand of Southern rock boogie with plenty of twang to fashion a wholly distinctive take on country tradition. Williams's work here is always indelible, and though he likes to drop his daddy's name a bit too often, it's hard to argue with introspective numbers like "All My Rowdy Friends (Have Settled Down)" and "Family Tradition," which each offer a unique and timeless take on the honky-tonk blues. --David CantwellCustomer Reviews:

Country of today is pure Pop!.......2006-01-28
But Hank serves up the real deal. Buy this and play it loud. Maybe you can drown out phonys of country. Better yet! Blast it in your F150's, while you run over the Nashville's corporate pretty boys.
Now This Is Real Rebel Country.......2005-02-19
Hank, Jr. remedied the problem of being the outcast in Nashville by doing what so many artists can't do: be himself. Sure, he's loud, a little too honest, and just a flat-out hellraiser, but that's what folks like to hear. That's what has staying power.
This disc, which features Bocephus' biggest hits from the late 70's/early 80's, is loaded with enough attitude to shake up even the biggest poser in Nashville. Things open up with "Family Tradition," the song that is a legend unto itself in bars and honky-tonks across the USA. Next we have "Whiskey Bent and Hell Bound," "Women I've Never Had," and seven more instantly recognizable hits. My personal favorites include "Texas Women"(maybe 'cause I married one), and "Dixie On My Mind."
The biggest song on this disc has to be "A Country Boy Can Survive." It's the song that has spawned countless arguments over what would happen if the world fell apart tomorrow. It has empowered the good, bad, and ugly of the rural world. It makes city boys quiver in their metrosexual underpants. In short, it is one of the most popular songs ever put out there. It's influence is still felt today in acts like Montgomery Gentry and even Kid Rock.
In closing, buy this disc if you want real rebel country. Folks who like music by artists like Waylon Jennings will probably like this. Also, youngsters who enjoy Kid Rock need to check this out since without Hank, Kid Rock might have turned out to be another Vanilla Ice.
Give Bocephus his due, he's an integral part of the Country/Southern rock genre.
"Hank, Whyyyy Do You Drink...Whyyyy Do You Roll Smoke?".......2004-04-18
What I love about Hank is that he shamelessly let's you know that he's a country boy and that he's proud of it. He's a real maverick and blazes his own trail instead of following country music trends. Hank does his thing and makes no apologies for it. If for no other reason, I personally would listen to his music for that reason alone.
Some of my favorites on this CD are the incomparable good-time bad-boy songs, "Family Tradition," "Whiskey Bent and Hell Bound," and "Women I've Never Had." If you've never had a good time drinkin' with Hank in the speakers, you're missin' out and need to toss back a few with the music blaring! Then there's one of the proud anthems for country folks all around America, "A Country Boy Can Survive," which is a favorite around my hillbilly-in-laws' house. Then there's the sober, "All My Rowdy Friends (Have Settled Down)," which is still a fun song to listen to even though all his rowdy friends have settled and "rowdy'd on down."
How can anyone not like Bocephus? He's plain spoken and sings his songs like he's just there to have a good time. Hey, anyone who sings a song that proclaims, "He likes happy and don't like sad," is worth listening to in my book; and any guy who sings songs about a ramblin' man, while askin' for a cold one in his hand is my kind of guy.
Don't stop to think it over, just put yourself in his position. Buy this CD, and make it a family tradition! It's a classic and worth every penny. Yee-Haw!!!!

Having long been unfairly dismissed as an ingenious Sinatra impersonator in some critical quarters, it's easy to see why Harry Connick, Jr., has been reluctant to record the sort of pop standards cover album that's become the career refuge of rock artists as diverse as Bryan Ferry and Rod Stewart. But that's exactly what the New Orleans pop revivalist has done here on a slate of familiar chestnuts from the 1950s and '60s. But there's a notable conflict at work between Connick the arranger/conductor and Harry the pop crooner. The former seems eager to infuse his charts with the sort of restless, reinventive musicality he's displayed on recent works as diverse as the stage foray Thou Shalt Not and the neo-bop jazz instrumental collection it inspired, Other Hours, bringing to bear arranging influences as diverse as Ray Charles and Nelson Riddle. But the oft Sinatra-smitten vocalist cruising over those masterfully stripped-down arrangements and bluesy, laconic tempos still seems sometimes reluctant to step out of The Chairman's long shadows--and occasionally basks in them, as on the repeated "Jilly" references in "My Blue Heaven." Still, it's artistically head and shoulders above most marketing-driven retro collections, an album that should delight the Connick faithful with its jazzy arrangements and bittersweet takes on the title track and "I Only Have Eyes For You"--and maybe win a few new converts willing to forgive the periodic genuflection to Sinatra. --Jerry McCulleyCustomer Reviews:

Maybe I'm just used to the remakes of a lot of these songs, but the tempo that HC uses here is just way too slow and boring. The arrangements are nondescript and overall it's just kind of blah.
Personally, I'll stick with his other big band albums like Songs I Heard, We Are in Love, Come by Me, When Harry met Sally (soundtrack) and the Christmas albums.

Amazon.com essential recording
Plucked from the piano bars of New Orleans, Harry Connick Jr. was an unlikely choice to pen the soundtrack for a major Hollywood release. But everyone concerned hit the jackpot. As with the best of Connick's music, When Harry Met Sally resonates with a whimsical yet sophisticated and urbane energy. That smooth, breathy tenor, combined with some inventive arrangements, brought color and setting to the film, playing a plum supporting role for Billy Crystal and Meg Ryan. Beyond the film, this collection of reworked standards stands on its own quite well. A lustrous vocal line bookends the hopping instrumental swing in the middle of "Don't Get Around Much Anymore," playing that song's central melancholy up with a Nelson Riddle-esque big-band sweep. Connick's take on "Love Is Here to Stay" puts a gentle cha-cha behind the familiar verses, slowly working in a lazily wandering tenor sax. By the time the record fades out in a hushed, tender rendition of "Where or When," Connick has managed to thoroughly charm us, whether we'd seen the movie or not. --Matthew CookeCustomer Reviews:
Excellent music even if it's not exactly the actual soundtrack.......2007-03-06
Harry Connick, Jr. was just hitting the big time when he was tapped for this film; and this CD proves he had great talent from the start. Even though he was a mere 21 at the time these songs were recorded, Harry displays a mature and polished sensitivity to the nuances in the lyrics of these songs. Harry croons wonderfully on this CD.
The CD opens with "It Had To be You" with Harry Connick, Jr. playing piano and singing the vocals. The big band arrangement by Marc Shaiman shines brightly as this grand music flows so silky smooth through your speakers. "Our Love Is Stay" gets the Latin slow dance treatment with Frank Wess on tenor saxophone and Jeff "Tain" Watts on drums. Harry and the musicians are in total synchronicity for this number--I love it!
Other special tracks on this CD include the high octane arrangement for the instrumental rendition of "Stompin' At The Savoy;" the bluesy "But Not For Me" with its excellent orchestral arrangement and the angst expressed by words and music in the number entitled "Don't Get Around Much Anymore." Moreover, "Autumn In New York" boasts a great arrangement for piano--and as always on this CD, Harry plays it to perfection!
"Let's call The Whole Thing Off" begins with Benjamin Jonah Wolfe on a brief bass solo; and Harry joins in singing marvelously. Once again we get a beautiful arrangement by Marc Shaiman--awesome!
The CD ends with an instrumental rendition of "It Had To be You" which gets a faster cabaret-type beat than it received on the first track of this CD as well as the romantic, pensive number entitled "Where Or When" performed by Harry Connick, Jr. The piano solo for "Where Or When" moves me and I'm sure that you'll love it, too.
Congratulations to Harry Connick, Jr. on his coup with this album; and the arrangements by Marc Shaiman impress me greatly.
The liner notes feature the song credits and there is a brief essay by Rob Reiner, director and producer of When Harry Met Sally. You get some great color still photos from the film, too.
Harry Connick, Jr. and these exceptional musicians weave a magic spell to create a remarkably professional album. This CD gives you a festival of music you won't forget anytime soon. I highly recommend this CD for fans of classic pop vocals; and fans of Harry Connick, Jr. will love every moment of this CD.

Great film!.......2006-10-30
How good this is depends on what you're looking for.......2005-11-04
So if you are looking for an actual soundtrack to WHMS, sorry to tell you it doesn't exist. You'll need to buy several CDs and burn your own. If however you're open to hearing more of that voice from the movie, read on.
Connick could be one of the last of the crooners, utilizing creamy smooth vocals, however he keeps the delivery diverse thanks to his jazz chops. He's not afraid to do new things with arrangements of hoary old standards (like his take on "Winter Wonderland" that turns the familiar carol into Naw'lins boogie-woogie or making big band showcase "Stompin' at the Savoy" into a trio number).
Those who are looking for "big band" might find this recording disappointing: only "It Had to Be You", "But Not for Me", and "I Could Write a Book" actually fit THAT mold. Most of this reminds me more of a smoky nightclub: tasty small combo playing with an emphasis on subtlety more than brassy braggadocio. The focus is quite squarely on Connick's vocals and piano. For this reason, this is probably a love it or hate it proposition: If you don't like Connick's voice you'll loathe it, if you like it you'll adore the disc.
HIGHLIGHTS:
A bossa nova backbeat from the sticks of "Tain" Watts makes for a distinctive version of "Love is Here to Stay". Frank Wess contributes a breathy tenor sax to the proceedings, commenting on the phrases Connick sings before adding a relaxed solo. A trio of Connick, bassist Benjamin Jonah Wolfe, and drummer Watts conjures up plenty of sound on a swinging version of Benny Goodman stand-by "Stompin' at the Savoy". Harry's work on the ivories is shown to best advantage here. For "Don't Get Around Much Anymore" he plays it two ways: Is the character simply too LAZY to "get around"? The lackadaisical tone up until the bridge would suggest that, but then the band charges in up until the close to reveal the passion and fire lying underneath...he really CAN'T bear it without her after all. Connick adlibs "I need you baby" as he faces the prospect of yet another lonely night. The finger-snapping hipster opening of "Let's Call the Whole Thing Off" is delightful. By the end of the tune, Connick is a jovial store-front preacher testifying to his band as they shout out "Call it off!" in reply.
LOWS:
There's way too much melodrama in "But not for Me"..it sounds a bit too much like a Walt Disney song. The arrangement of "Autumn in New York" is simply too busy...too much is happening with the rhythm that distracts from the melody.
BOTTOM LINE:
It's not the soundtrack. It IS nice modern jazz interpretations of time-tested classics and it hangs together well. If you have a love for vocal jazz, you should give this a listen.
3 1/2 stars
Must say, this best jazz vocal cd ever heard.......2005-06-21

Saxophonist Jr. Walker was the most gutbucket of Motown's consistent '60s hit makers. Even when trying his hardest to conform to label formulas ("What Does It Take [To Win Your Love]," "Gotta Hold On to This Feeling"), he sounded like he'd be just as much at home in the backroom of a barbecue joint. When pursuing his muse in even more minimalist form ("Shotgun," "[I'm a] Road Runner," the smoky "Cleo's Mood"), he sounded like the owner of the place. --Rickey WrightCustomer Reviews:

Consensual Sax.......2006-11-05
Even as a kid plugged into Motown I noticed that Jr. Walker & The All Stars stood apart. For one thing, the sax was up front, ahead of the vocals. More than that though, JW&TAS had an earthy, funky groove that was raw, authentic, and infectious. While the other Motown acts were going for smooth, Walker went for the down-home, house party foot stomp.
What I didn't know then was that the folks at Motown had made a conscious decision to step back and let Junior do his thing. The times they did decide to run him through the Motown mill produced his most forgettable efforts, (How Sweet It Is, Come See About Me, What Does It Take, and These Eyes.)
Songs like Shotgun, Shake And Fingerpop, I'm A Road Runner, and Pucker Up Buttercup caused uptight, suburban teenagers to leap out of their seats and be transformed by the sheer joy of line dancing. Walker's music felt good all the way down to the shoes.
No discussion of Junior Walker is complete without mentioning Cleo's Mood, arguably the sexiest, sultriest song ever recorded by anyone. He stretches the groove out in Cleo's Back, and shows it off again in the outrageously slinky Satan's Blues. Sweet!
Many obscure gems on this anthology. Tune Up is the perfect throwdown track while Twist Lackawanna is so hot it could only have been played before an intermission. Hip City, though not obscure, is wonderful to hear again. Folks, if it gets any better than this - nobody told me.

When Junior Kimbrough died in January 1998, part of the spirit of Mississippi hill-country blues went with him. He was a proud musician, aware of his African roots and his artistic singularity--perhaps the last unique voice in the genre. The sound of his bawling singing and unpredictable, serpentine guitar were as eerie as a warm wind humming through a field of tombstones, as hypnotic as the ancient village drum music it was based on, thanks to his complete command of his rhythm sections. This collection serves full notice of Kimbrough's authenticity, from his first recording, an impromptu-sounding "Release Me" played with rockabilly cult figure Charlie Feathers, through his last '90s albums for Fat Possum. It's in the latter cases that Kimbrough paints a colorful portrait of his hardscrabble life just above the Delta. Rape is wrongly equated with love (in the brutal-but-fascinating title track), and sexual prowess ("All Night Long") is the only true coin of manhood. Finally, "Done Got Old" serves as the best epitaph for this blues hell-raiser, whose decades of bootlegging, boozing, and womanizing seemed to catch up with him in his final years. Nonetheless, that song and the 11 others prove that no matter how tired and worn he became, Kimbrough's crackling music never lost its edge or its feeling of danger and menace. --Ted DrozdowskiAlbum Description
A career spanning collection of tracks from one of the most influential & original blues musicians in the past fifty years, Junior Kimbrough, hailed by such folks as Bono & Iggy Pop as a primal force in American music, Junior never reached the mass audience that he deserved while alive, but his music endures & continues to be discovered by music fans from all walks of life. 12 awesome tracks.Customer Reviews:
Essential Down-Home Blues.......2007-06-19
Junior Kimbrough was a Mississippi Delta bluesman to the core, and these tunes, all recorded live, reveal a classic musician who perfomed at his own juke joint in the Mississippi woods, and seemed to be playing for himself as much, if not more, than for others.
"All Night Long," "Meet Me In The City," "Done Got Old," "You Better Run," and the outstanding "Most Things Haven't Worked Out" display Kimbrough rough-hewd vocals and mezmerizing guitar playing.
This collection shows that there will always be musicians who live and play on their own terms. Junior Kimbrough was definitely one of the best.

Covering everything from roots reggae to dancehall, culture to (mild) slackness, and hip-hop to R&B, Damian "Jr. Gong" Marley's sophomore offering, Halfway Tree, bridges the gap between several disparate Jamaican sounds. "Where Is The Love?"--set to a slinky American R&B rhythm--juxtaposes the youngest Marley's roughneck toasting against Ruff Ryder Eve's assertive feminist rap. His posh uptown pedigree can be observed in the smooth grooves and salsa-infected vibes of the Sly & Robbie-produced "She Needs My Love," which also showcases graceful vocalization by Yami Bolo. "Catch a Fire," featuring brother Stephen's raw silk harmonies, drops some straightforward African diaspora history in a classic roots reggae style, deconstructing and updating their father Bob's classic "Slave Driver." Overall, Halfway Tree is above average, and "Give Dem Some Way" is the album's most outstanding selection. After opening with a truly funny spoken-word intro, a funky bass-drum-and-flute "wild apache" beat kicks in, and then Jr. Gong and talented newcomer Izzy set it off for the educated rude-bwoy youth. --Rebecca LevineCustomer Reviews:

Hank Jr.'s career stands as the most frustrating of all modern honky-tonkers', as much for the way the industry has managed his immense catalogue as for the way he has managed his undeniable gifts as a songwriter and singer. At three CDs, Curb's overview is a far cry from "complete": his best work, especially the tough, bluesy songs of Whiskey Bent and Hell Bound, is slighted in favor of a play-the-hits approach, even though Williams's singles haven't always been his best work. Likewise, the collection includes nary a cut from the sadly out-of-print Hank Williams Jr. & Friends, though the liner notes recognize that 1975 album as a landmark. Instead Curb has cobbled material readily available elsewhere on existing hits packages and complete albums. That said, Jr.'s country-fried rock--newcomers may be shocked at how hard he rocks--and his unreconstructed hillbilly ideology can be bracing on "Come On Over to the Country," on the foreboding "A Country Boy Can Survive," and on his best '80s performance, a scorching duet with Johnny Cash on "That Old Wheel" (from Cash's classic Water from the Wells of Home). But instead of focusing on similarly strong tunes, this box includes the tasteless beyond-the-crypt duets with Hank Sr., the silly, unblushing prejudice of "Young Country," and the war-mongering diatribe "Don't Give Us a Reason"--as if the listener needed reminders of just how bad Bocephus can be. What Hank Jr.'s legacy needs is a thorough, critical, and eclectic compilation of his finest performances. This set isn't it. --Roy KastenCustomer Reviews:

What I would like to add to the other reviews of this very fine collection is the fact that some of Hank's mid-1970's music is always over-looked. Great hard-edged country songs such as The New South, Montgomery In The Rain, and a great drunken version of Uncle Pen. Then there's other fine tunes like The Conversation, Are You Sure Hank Done It This Way, and If You Don't Like Hank Williams. And that's why this collection received a "4" instead of a "5" - it is in no way complete, and should not be called that.
Hank Williams Jr., in my opinion, did not get the true acclaim that he should have. The radio play, at the time most of these releases came out, seemed to be hung on Barbara Mandrell and Lee Greenwood, and others of their ilk, so many of these tunes did not get the hot airplay that they should have. And, as for Country Music Awards, well, it took clear until the mid-80's before he truly began to be recognized for his contributions to Country Music.
So, all n' all this is a very good collection of Hank Williams Jr.'s biggest hits, and you definitely will not be disappointed. He's back to being played quite often in my house, and he sounds just as good as he did twenty plus years ago. Go Hank!
By the way, many of Hank Jr.'s earlier albums/cd's are available at extremely low prices here at Amazon (The New South, Old Habits, Pressure Is On, & Friends). Check them out. You'll be glad you did.
