4 out of 5 stars Hope and Sorrow.......2007-07-17

Hope and Sorrow is the newest album from the French artist Wax Tailor. It's similar to his previous CD "Tales of the Forgotten Melodies". The sample splicing in this CD loses it's shock it had in the first album. Hope & Sorrow has more dark songs on it and in parts tries to be political.

It has a few really good songs on it but it doesn't seem to flow quite as well from song to song. So if you like Wax Tailor and have the first album pick this one up as well. It'll grow on you.

    5 out of 5 stars DJ Shadow and RJD2 have company . . ........2007-05-28

I recently purchased this album not exactly knowing what to expect. The guy at the music store recommended this to me. It is now my favorite album.

5 out of 5 stars No sophomore slump here.......2007-05-03

I hardly ever review albums but saw this one didn't have one yet, and it definitely deserves one. About six months ago or so I picked up Tailor's debut, Tales of the Forgotten Melodies. It quickly became one of my favorite instrumental hip hop albums, right up there with my Rjd2 collection. But his new effort, Hope & Sorrow, definitely one-ups it.

There's no weaknesses here at all, each track has its own vibe, and all the guest vocals are strong. In fact that's one thing that sets this apart from Tailor's debut; his choice of vocals, with more than a few tracks featuring female singers, perfectly compliment the music. Think Alias's partner in crime, Tarsier. And after only a couple listens, you'll find some of these songs still looping through your head well after you've put the headphones down. The whole album has that secret ingredient that makes it grow on you more and more with every listen. I've spun it several times in the week or so I've had it and still haven't gotten tired of a single track. The whole album also still has what seems to be Tailor's signature elements of plenty of strings and horns, but it has a great balance, and he really knows how to weave them into a great composition. And the samples on this album are also stellar, just like they were in Forgotten Melodies.

If you're a fan of instrumental hip hop in the vein of Rjd2, DJ Shadow, DJ Krush, etc., this is a must have. But Wax Tailor has a sound all his own that you can only get a feel for by listening, not comparing, so check it for yourself.

    4 out of 5 stars Wax Poetic.......2007-01-30

Wax Poetic is a interesting group. This cd shows an eclectic side of the group. Differant singers gives it depth. I really enjoyed listening to the cd. Lights low...just chilling!

4 out of 5 stars Eclectic downtempo - a little something for everyone.......2005-12-18

I just fairly recently bought this CD and have been pretty impressed. I bought it primarily due to Norah Jones' contributions. I love Norah, her voice is heaven, but have found her highly acclaimed (and deservedly so) solo work to be just ever so slighly too soulful-jazzy-bluesy for my taste - I love her solo work, to be sure, just not as much as I love her in this genre. While her recent work is beautiful indeed, I really like her voice when it is married with downtempo electronica such as with Wax Poetic or on the song "New York City" on the 2005 dance/electronica compilation CD "Top Shelf Dance - Volume 1" (check it out, it's fantastic).

Really, though, the primary reason to buy this album is for the song "Angels" - Norah's voice floating above the beautiful ethereal music is intense bliss. It takes a minute for her vocals to kick in, and the song is certainly not lyrically dense, but the overall effect is absolute heaven.

There are other winners here - "Tell Me" (Norah's other vocal performance on this album), "Girl", "Homme" (love the Brazilian Girls!), and "Sea Grass". There are some other good tracks as well, in addition to these, just not as good and somewhat hit or miss for me. Still, all in all, very solid album. I recommend it without reservation.

5 out of 5 stars Delicious, sexy, sophisticated........2005-06-22

Creative and imaginative, with a real art to the compositions, mixing and musicianship. So few recordings deserve the sort of respect that comes with straight five-star ratings, in this case practically across the boards. Delicious, sexy, sophisticated.

    5 out of 5 stars Upbeat downtempo.......2004-07-23

Anyone who's a fan of jazz-based music and electronica is sure to love this album. I happened upon them by chance when they opened for another band. Intrigued, I later bought their self-titled debut when I saw it in a store. Nublu Sessions has some tracks off that release, as well as all-new tracks. Nublu touches on a variety of styles, genres, vocals and tempos. It would be hard to be disappointed with this album. I also recommend getting their first album.

5 out of 5 stars One of the Best Downtempo cds of 2004.......2004-06-12

I've been listening to this cd over and over since I got it. I'm not a big Norah Jones fan, but her voice blends perfectly with this music. The music blends jazz, electronic, a tiny bit of hip-hop, and world beats. It's laid-back and perfect for summer. Most of the tracks have a female vocalist over the music.

Track 4, Angels, is definitely the highlight of this album. There really isn't a bad track on the album.

If you have all the British version Parlophone cd's...as MOST Beatle fans do....then you have all these songs in the format they are here.

Now....for the COMPLETISTS in the crowd.....If you are seeking the american versions that were mixed for Capitol.....You can find them all on the 3 Anthology sets....and if you purchased the first 2 CAPITOL ALBUM boxes...you have american versions there...They are planning to release a Vol 3 this year.

It really burns me to see these bootleggers passing off this stuff to thirsty collectors....

WHILE IT IS TRUE YOU COULD COLLECT 4 OTHER CDS AND HAVE THESE SONGS ,THIS IS A TIDY LITTLE PACKAGE OF WHAT WERE NON-ALBUM SONGS. THIS WAS RELEASED IN ALBUM FORM CIRCA 1970 ,WELL BEFORE 2 OF THE AFORE-MENTIONED CDS HAD SEEN PRINT. CONTRARY TO UNPOPULAR BELIEF THIS WAS ISSUED ON CD IN THE EUROPEAN UNION BY CAP/EMl,BREIFLY AND IS/WAS AVAILABLE INTERNATIONALLY. I AM SOMEWHAT AMAZED THAT CERTAIN "EXPERTS" DID NOT CHECK THEIR FACTS BEFORE MAKING SUCH SCATHING ASSESMENTS,BUT I SUPPOSE WE ALL RUSH TO JUDGEMENT SOMETIMES. THIS ISSUE IN PARTICULAR IS A RE-RELEASE, THAT HAS SADLY GONE OUT OF PRINT TOO. AS FAR AS S0ME WAX THAT ISSUED THIS,THE COMPANY THAT USED TO BE THE SUPPLIER STATES THAT THEY WERE A RUSSIAN AFFILIATE OF CAP/EMl.TO BE FRANK,I DO NOT KNOW IF THAT IS STILL TRUE AND THIS MAY BE THE REASON IT HAS GONE OUT OF PRINT YET AGAIN. MY UNCLE WAS ONE OF MANY BUSINESSMEN WHO FLEW OVER TO THE FORMER SOVIET UNION BACK IN THE EARLY '90S TO HELP THE RUSSIANS ESTABLISH BUSINESS SENSE,INTERNATIONAL TRADE AND GET THE ECONOMIC BALL ROLLING.THERE WERE MANY CONCESSIONS MADE TO THAT END.REMEMBER THE TIMES - WHILE MANY OF THE RUSSIAN NATIONALS WERE ALL FOR IT,THERE WERE STILL SEVERAL WHO WANTED THE COMMUNIST/SOVIET GOVERNMENT BACK. FOR THE WESTERN WORLD,THIS WAS CERTAINLY UNACCEPTABLE! THE U.S. AND IT'S ALLIES DID NOT WANT THE EMPIRE AS IT HAD BEEN CALLED,TO MAKE A COMEBACK. NOW YOU KNOW WHY THESE UNIQUE LITTLE CDS(AMONG OTHER ITEMS MARKETED),WERE ALLOWED.THIS PARTICUALR COMPANY WAS ONE OF THE FIRST(OVER THERE) TO ACTUALLY DO IT RIGHT AS FAR AS FACTORY PRESSING,EXCELLENT REMASTERING AND SPECIALISED BOOKLET PHOTOS,POSTER TYPE INSERTS. FOR NOW THIS IS A SUPERB PACKAGE,TIL THE WESTERN BRANCH WAKES UP AND ISSUES IT HERE. AT THE RATE THEY ARE GOING,I HOPE WE DON'T HAVE TO WORRY ABOUT CHOOSING BETWEEN PURCHASING DENTURE CREAM OR THE DOMESTIC VERSION OF THIS!

    1 out of 5 stars Some Wax?.......2007-03-30

As an avid Amazon shopper, I am surprised my previous comments regarding this release were deleted. Since when is "Some Wax" a legitimate arm of EMI? I wish, truly, that EMI would release "Hey Jude" on CD, but that has yet to happen. "Hey Jude" is currently out of print as a vinyl release, and unfortunately, this release is not official. Believe me, I've got the original vinyl of "The Beatles Again" on Apple and the reprint on Capitol (purple label), and I've got my share of pops and clicks on each of them. I'd love this release to be put out on CD from EMI!

3 out of 5 stars good album, but not worth the money.......2007-02-05

the beatles are a great band, and this is a great album. but these songs can be found by much cheaper means. tracks 1 and 2 are on the A Hard Days Night soundtrack, and the last eight tracks are on the Past Masters releases. so unless youre a huge beatles collecter, this album isnt for you.

5 out of 5 stars The Ballad of John, Paul, George & Ringo.......2007-01-04

As cobbled-together albums go, THE BEATLES AGAIN (also known as "Hey Jude") is about as good as it gets. The 10 songs presented on it are from singles and B-sides, and cover the majority of the band's stellar career. Not one of these could be considered throwaway or filler.

John Lennon's lead vocals on all four of his songs are some of his most powerful ever. The track of "Revolution" presented is the one Lennon tried (but failed) to place on the White Album. Commonly labelled "the fast-version," the spine-tingling guitar work on it is unforgettable. All of Paul McCartney's tunes on this record were some of the biggest hits the Beatles ever had. George Harrison's lone contribution, "Old Brown Shoe," is high-energy and has an infectious hook.

If you don't already own this one, here is a "fab" opportunity to enjoy... THE BEATLES AGAIN!

This is a good mix compilation.but you know they do it in the studio so It's all cleaned up. But RHV has some clean mixing skills. Also bad boy bill with that scratching.Overall it was released back in the day,but it's still the ish!!!!

4 out of 5 stars Great mixing, but so dated.......2004-04-04

I love Richard Humpty Vission and Bad Boy Bill for their heavy beats. This CD truly shows off how great they are at mixing House together. However, these songs are terribly dated. It's 2004... don't go buying CDs from 1997.

4 out of 5 stars Dated hard house CD.......2003-08-15

Excellent mixing, lots of different tracks, classic hard hosue CD. BUT, a lot of the tracks are dated sounding and some have cheesy vocal samples that take away from the quality of the driving hard house sound (cheesy as in cheesy bad, not cheesy good). The sound of this CD is less energetic and more funky than other CDs. Its OK. I might have loved it in 1996, but its kind of boring now.

5 out of 5 stars BBB and R"H"V dropping the bomb!!1.......2001-12-08

HOUSE CONNECTION is an awesome hard-bangin house Cd that all dance music fans should check out. I bought this Cd when it was first released and I still continue to listen to it all the time. BBB and RHV keep the music flowing and their mixing here is flawless. I like to mess around on the truntables, but I wish I had the talent that these 2 guys have. One just has to check out the quality of this Cd and you can see why these 2 guys are probably the best house Dj's in the country right now

5 out of 5 stars BOOM! BOOM! BOOM! --SWITCH!.......2001-07-15

I enjoy listening to this album a lot. From the start, the DJs kick off some very catchy beats and samples, and they just won't quit. Their live shows must also rock, and I definately want to see one before I die. This album contains more than just the usual beat mixing and turntable tricks. On most house music CDs, the DJ(s) would mix similar beats and styles the whole way through, but Richard "Humpty" Vission and Bad Boy Bill never mix the same beat twice, and their styles seem limitless. Anyone who does not like house music because of its repetative and monotonous nature, would probably change their mind when they hear this CD. Even though the music is repetative, the DJs keep the music changing very quickly with perfect timing, keeping the energy high all the time. I have not yet gotten bored over this CD, and I highly recommend it to anyone who likes to dance.

I absolutly love this cd. every song is great, I listen to it all the time. I highly recommend it.

4 out of 5 stars Dark poetry in motion.......2006-11-03

This artist reads like an Edgar Allen Poe story--though not gruesome, Wax Tailor is full of dark sounds and mysterious twists. Each track is a different collage of sounds, which is also what makes the album so unique. The spoken word (instead of those which are sung) is integrated in many songs. The track "I Don't Know" is a prime example of a spoken plot being added with music. Wihle this makes tracks sometimes incoherent if one tries to follow the words alone, the mood of the song lingers in the listener's head for a good time afterwards .

In many ways, the album art is a great reflection of the group's sound: a black, desolate room with beams of light seeping through is equivalent to the dark, haunting sounds that linger through traditionally upbeat songs. I was very impressed with the way Wax Tailor incorporated with such enigma old jazz tunes with optimistic messages. If you should only take two songs from the album to download I would suggest "How I Feel", and "Que Sera Sera", both serving as a darker rendition of the popular, high-spitited jazz songs.

Not all tracks are so clever, and while they may stand out amongst other artists they fall short of their potential seen in other previously noted songs. "Where My Heart's At" is in a different style entirely. To me, it was a risk not worth taking since they're brilliant in other displayed techniques.

Wax Tailor is a great find for those who are familiar with popular trip-hop artists like Morcheeba or the up-and-coming Gnarls Barkley. Even better, this is one artist that will age very, very well due to how well it stands apart from so many groups; therefore, this album makes a sound purchase.

    5 out of 5 stars A Rare Gem.......2006-08-06

I have never reviewed a CD. When I heard this CD, I had to write something, especially since it has only 1 review. To begin... words cannot do this CD justice. I agree with the other reviewer... this is 100% fresh. The most original CD I have heard in years.

I am listening to it right now and it is mind blowing. Although, it may seem like a blend of hip-hop, funk, jazz, and samples, I think the proper classification is Trip-Hop. If you like K&D Sessions, Carboot Soul and DJ Kicks-Nightmares on Wax, then you will like this. However, it is not a reboot of those CDs. Very original! Turn up the volume, sit back, and be prepared for some fresh, mind bending, beats.

5 out of 5 stars A brilliant blend of old skool, jazz, funk: a true work of art.......2006-06-09

This record just stands out. As a DJ for 20+ years, I'm a very tough grader. While this record is not 100% "new", it's 100% "fresh."

It's one of those few records that defy categorization. "Damn That Music Made My Day" falls clearly into Hip-Hop, and is one of the better break-mixes I've heard. The record jumps (seamlessly) from jazz to funk to soul to hip-hop. A violin as lead on one song, a turntable on another.

If feels as if the record is a journey from beginning to end. One moment you're in the South Bronx, one moment you are in Egypt. Then France. Then New Orleans.

Wax Tailor pours his heart into this record, and shares his love of music with you, and what a beautiful journey it is.

"Tales of Forgotten Melodies" plays as one cohesive piece of sonic art, and I am better for having listened to it.

    So you will be, too.

Taking the world music scene by storm with her self-titled debut, Ethiopian singer Ejigayehu "Gigi" Shibabaw picks up right where she left off five years ago with Gold & Wax. Producer Bill Laswell is again behind the boards, and he's assembled another cosmopolitan cast of backing musicians, who range from Guns N' Roses guitarist Buckethead and Indian production team Midival Punditz to P-Funk keyboardist Bernie Worrell and jazz trumpeter Nils Petter Molvaer. Ever the master aural architect, Laswell finds a way fuse styles as well as the players' strong personalities into a seamless whole. Gigi herself soars siren-like over the top of ambient leaning tunes, or she digs in with her plaintive high-pitched voice on more rhythmically anchored pieces. Standouts include the English-language "Utopia," the rhythmically churning and horn-driven "Salam," and the anthemic "Gomelayeye." Not much of a departure from her debut, but there's no point in complaining about more of a very good thing. -- Tad Hendrickson

    Album Description

Product Description The long-awaited follow-up to Gigi's stellar debut has finally landed. On her second effort, Gold & Wax, Ejigayehu "Gigi" Shibabaw has again proven her ability to seamlessly work the songs of her Ethiopian ancestry into a contemporary vocal sound befitting the worlds of jazz, electronica and even dub-inspired African rhythms. Produced by Bill Laswell, Gold & Wax maintains an illustrious gleam; every instrument falls perfectly into place, centered on the singer's near-angelic range.

The praise for Gigi was universal and unabashed. The Miami Herald rightfully called Gigi "Ethiopia's gift to the world," while The NY Times described her sound as "full of unexpected angles and modal curves." Her vocals, according to XLR8R, "sounds sweeter than a cup of Ethiopian honey wine"; while the Village Voice agreed saying she has "not just a luxuriously rich voice but an unassumingly cosmopolitan presence." Gigi is an ambassador of ancient sound with modern sensibilities.

    5 out of 5 stars Poetic Perfection.......2006-10-05

Gigi's music is an authentic experience where the ancient and modern mingle in an intriguing soul infusion of rich rhythms and alluring and at times ethereal vocals. Gold and Wax is at times hypnotic, at times deeply sensuous and always captivating in its sophistication.

Gigi's voice melts into "Gomelaleye" as it merges with an electronic world. By the end of the song, you are heady from the sweet perfection of the warm soothing textures and Gigi's ecstatic vocals. In "Ambasale" she sings with such a clarity of vision that seems to float above the surging depths of an ever changing complexity. You can hear a world of cultural influences in her music, all while her voice remains firmly rooted in her heritage.

You honestly don't need to understand one word of Amharic to be completely entranced by each melodic rendition, although the layers of meaning may be hidden within the beauty. I love "Salam" and the images my mind forms as I imagine her singing this song out in an African night blissfully lost in her own ecstatic wild and sweet ziraleet.

Gold and Wax is an intriguing title because it takes much more heat to melt gold to purity than to melt pure wax. Gigi knows when to use her vocal strengths and when to soften the heat. She can whisper over a candle without melting the wax or take an ancient idea into her heart and melt it like gold to form contemporary beauty in "Utopia." This comforting song is filled with hope and draws on the idea of unity.

What comes across is a purity of sound that is exquisite especially when Ustad Sultan Khan plays the sarangi in "Hulu-Dane" where you have to take a deep breath, it is that beautiful.

After listening to this album for seven or eight times, new sounds emerge as if from an everchanging African sunset and merge with your mind and soul in the most intriguing of ways. At first the obvious appears and then the mysterious hidden element evolves and awakens and you are left with a sense of wonder.

As the wax melts away with the heat of the gold, Gigi's voice becomes the goldsmith creating precious treasures. She reveals the poetry of the Ethiopian heart and effortlessly mingles her voice with the musical artistry of Abegasu Shiota, Bernie Worrell, Nils Petter Molvaer, Moges Habte, Assaye Zegeye, Bill Laswell (electronic percussion), Robert Musso (acoustic guitar), Karsh Kale (drums), Aiyb Dieng, MIDIval Punditz and Lili Haydn (violin). Gigi's Gold and Wax is rare in beauty and an album you will want in your collection if you love world music.

5 out of 5 stars Ethiopian Angel Music.......2006-08-26

The Gold on this wax is enriching! GIGI has the voice of an Ethiopian Angel singing over contemporary beats. Her voice is akin to a butterfly in flight. Although I cannot understand a single word of the Aramaic language, it is the beauty & conviction in which she sings that impresses me the most. This is what contemporary African music is sounding like today, so don't even think that Akon is representing!

    5 out of 5 stars Gigi.......2006-08-24

Having not heard any other Gigi albums I can't compare to previous efforts but I can certainly say that this one is good.

I have no idea what she is singing but she has a good voice and the songs have nice beats behind them and are very catchy however hard to sing along with for obvious reasons

    3 out of 5 stars Reality Check.......2006-08-09

Many reviewers having only a superficial acquaintance with Gigi's work think that the previous Palm Pictures release "Gigi" was the singer's debut record, or that "Gold and Wax" is the only record since. Both these assumptions are entirely incorrect. It would be better for this CD if that WERE true, because it compares poorly not only to "Gigi" but to the rest of her body of work.

The Amazon "official reviewer" and assorted "editorial reviewers" are laughably off-base and should literally be ashamed of themselves. This CD sounds like it was rushed shoddily to market to capitalize on the currently raised profile of producer Bill Laswell, and just get "new Gigi product" on the market.

The quality of compositions, arrangements, performances, editing, mixing - and yes, Gigi's singing - are all significantly below par here compared to "Zion Roots," "Gigi," and "Radioaxiom," the Jah Wobble/Bill Laswell opus on which Gigi is heavily featured. Sadly, this is becoming a pattern in recent Laswell follow-up efforts: a brilliant opener succeeded by a lame pretender. His "Version2Version" follow-up to the absolutely first class "Radioaxiom" is previous case-in-point. The listener is further insulted by the inclusion yet again of the limp song "Jerusalem," showing up in a Laswell/Gigi record for the third or fourth time, in certainly the worst version yet.

Want to hear Gigi at her acoustic best? Go for "Zion Roots." Want an electro-acoustic sound-painting tour-de-force in which her voice is treated like an instrumental sound source? Go for "Radioaxiom." Want to hear a masterfully-realized modern planetary pop record? Go for "Gigi." If you can't hear how Gold and Wax is dramatically inferior to all her other work, then you are neither an active nor a discriminating listener, and are a prisoner of your own ignorance.

2.5 Stars, generously rounded up to 3, since these are, after all, great musicians who deserve our support, but not blind adulation.

    5 out of 5 stars Soulful "Carboot".......2005-05-15

Nightmares on Wax is one of those legendary one-man bands who crop up every now and then (also known as George Evelyn, but that doesn't sound as cool). Even the "merely good" work by people such as he is astounding, inventive and really fun.

And "Carboot Soul," his third album, is no exception: it's an amazing mixture of chillout electronica and acid jazz. It's a bit less hazy than his 1995 "Smoker's Delight," but that isn't surprising -- here Evelyn pulls on various influences to flavour his music. The title fits this album: it's soulful, yet it has as many influences as a "carboot" rummage sale.

It begins on a symphonic note in the epic "Les nuits," which seems to herald a new music direction. Don't be deceived. The symphonic build-up leads to funky grooves and jazzy flavours in "Morse," which continues to the brassy "Easejimi," the mellow murmurs of "Finer," and the wonderfully peculiar "Argha Noah." Say that last title out loud, and you'll understand the joke.

But there is a slightly more delicate style near the end, when Evelyn switches to the gently rippling guitar of "Fire in the Middle," the melancholy acid jazz of "Survival," and the eerier, more symphonic sound of "Capumcap." Evelyn ends the album on a high note, with those sensitive, lower-key songs.

It's hard to find groups as good as Nightmares on Wax -- scour the top hundreds, and you won't find anything like this. I personally found "Carboot Soul" in a tiny hole-in-the-wall music store, in the "used" bin, although it's hard to imagine why anyone would discard an album like this.

Despite the chillout label, Evelyn's music has a sort of relaxed warmth that counterpoints the icy sound of many other bands. He also has a good ear for samples and beats, lacing them with razor-sharp drums and some wonderful brass instrumentation. Sara Winton's rich voice is used well, crooning, "A bottle like a model shipwreck/where did it come from?/Where will it go?/A face without a name/survival..."

"Carboot Soul" is another triumph by Nightmares on Wax, and another wonderful display of George Evelyn's considerable talents. An absolute joy.

    Album Description

It is evident in listening to In A Space Outta Sound that Nightmares on Wax has travelled far. A contemporary and varied album of many textures, tempos and tones, it is embedded with harmonic inflections from cultures far beyond these shores. Whilst this is an album deconstructing George's musical make up, and in doing so reflecting his rich musical heritage, by inviting you down a personal retrospective journey, In A Space… also unwittingly reflects the urban multi-cultural landscape we live in today.

    3 out of 5 stars Outta Ideas.......2007-04-02

To many musical artists, the idea of "impressive ambience" or "notable chill" is a contradiction in terms. If the music is meant to be little more than the decor for dreams, if it is designed as a batten for the back wall, then what's the point in giving it indelibility? Thankfully, many artists (Kruder and Dorfmeister, Ulrich Schnauss, et. al.) are capable of creating atmospheres that are both evocative and unobtrusive. It's a delicate kind of chemistry, but it can be done.

Nightmares on Wax aims for ambient funk and hits the target, but almost too well. The music on "In A Space Outta Sound" is so laid-back, it limbos right under the rader. It would provide the steady and subliminal pulse for any number of quiet nights or get-togethers, but it's unlikely anyone would take notice and ask the host, "What's this you've got playing?"

Okay, maybe some of their numbers would pique interest. I'm thinking of the quirky conga coolness of "Deepdown," or the ghostly lounge sensibilities of "Passion," or the classic rock shadows interlaced throughout "You Wish." There are, really, no bad songs on this album; they all play soft shoe with equally soft music, and they know the moves by heart. But it's a dance you'll forget as soon as the stereo has been turned off, and it's even likely you'll forget that you forgot.

Ambience is good, and chill is great, but truly relaxing music stays in the air, lingers in the heart, and saturates the soul long after the notes have ceased to sound. Give me barbs, give me hooks, give me risks; the rest may be good, but it's also nothing else at all.

    4 out of 5 stars Nice... .......2006-06-12

One of my favourite albums in my library is "Smoker's Delight". Just having my first listen to In a Space... and I'm definitely having fun listening to this. As button mentioned, it is a good compliment to the other NOW albums. I've the idea that this one's gonna get a good deal of playtime on my iPod...

    3 out of 5 stars Chillin..........2006-05-12

This latest effort from Nightmares On Wax continues in the spirit of his previous work, smoked out mellow downtempo with elements of funk, soul/r&b, jazz, underground hip-hop and more. Like other reviewers have mentioned In A Space Outta Sound is a little weaker and less inventive than some of the earlier albums, but it is still a decent chill-out disc. It must be said though that the production on some of the tracks is a little sub-par IMO (at least for an established artist like NOW) and some of the sample choices are a bit obvious and overused. However, there are some quality tracks on here and the album as a whole works rather well so if you're just looking for some mellow tunes to chill out to then this cd might just be for you, but if you don't own any of the earlier albums you should probably pick up one of those instead.

    3 out of 5 stars VICTORIA MOREHEAD's igloomag.com REVIEW :: .......2006-03-29

    VICTORIA MOREHEAD's igloomag.com REVIEW ::
(03.28.06) Nightmares on Wax put out their first album with Warp Records, Dextrous, in the late 80s, a combined effort of George Evelyn and Kevin Harper. Soon after, Harper left to pursue other routes, and Evelyn took a break, coming back with Smoker's Delight in 1995. Since then, Evelyn has continued to mix up and put out a consistent brand of downtempo music, releasing many additional albums including the most recent, In a Space Outta Sound.

In a Space... isn't new territory for Evelyn. It's full of soul, groove, funk, jazz, reggae and sweet vocals. But that could be the issue holding NOW back from ever growing beyond the category of "music that's good to chill to."

Taking the flavors of other music and amalgamating them into a funktronic sound has become de rigueur of downtempo electronic music. It's the background music in trendy clothing stores and the soundtrack in commercials for German cars. Evelyn's talent is obvious, but if he would just break out of that sterile, perfectly synchronized world of downtempo layers, he might surprise himself. Perhaps it's just a matter of keeping it a little rough around the edges. Maybe if Evelyn let in a little more of the blues raunch and the soul of-well, soul-he could take it to the next level.

This is not to say that In a Space... doesn't have it's respected place. It's just a place that seems to be getting overcrowded with other musicians doing exactly the same thing. Why have five albums from the same artist if they all sound exactly alike? We're looking for evolution, experimentation-something surprising. Maybe NOW's next album will let that funk stay funky, rip the edges and keep 'em raw, and show us some soul that's not so shiny and new.

5 out of 5 stars Still the man.......2006-03-21

a perfect compliment to NOW's fantastic albums of the past, "smokers delight" and "carboot soul" in particular. not really messing with the formula of previous work, but still sounds fresh, positive and grows with each listen.
