About the Artist
Lead by its charismatic singer, Liz McGrath, Los Angeles' Tongue - which includes Ivan X on guitar, Rick Collins on bass and Kevin Proof on drums - has been banging out its eclectic brand of punk rock for nearly eight years now.

On the heels of its first effort, 1998's Faulty Parts -a collection of recordings from the past couple of years put out on their own Cannibal City label -- and on the reputation of its intense live performances, Tongue is quickly gaining notoriety beyond just the Los Angeles club scene where the band is a staple. Its influences vast, Tongue is an impossible band to pigeonhole - jumping seamlessly from one genre to the next - from punk to psychedelic, from funk to reggae. Courted by such major labels as Sony Dreamworks and Interscope, the band opted to sign with Hello Records in the fall of 1999. Tongue's second full-length record, Sweet Meat, will be released in February of 2001.

Album Description

Puttin' the ass back in bluegrass, these Austinites arm themselves with fiddles, mandolins, and guitars and run headlong into the battle of Left Hand Hate and Right Hand Love. On the right hand, there are exquisite renditions of anthems from Merle, Elvis, and Bill (Monroe, that is). On the left hand, there are the profane gutter brawls with songs about shallow graves, winning the Sweepstakes, pot-smoking, and other topics deemed unsavory by contemporary bluegrass standards.

5 out of 5 stars FIVE STARS PLUS! *********.......2005-02-20

As another reviewer wrote, ignore the official review above. That stuffy reviewer must have been undergoing painful surgery on his funnybone when he listened to this album. This female-fronted band is terrific! Whip fast music, clever smart and funny songs, the album is sharp as a needle in the eye. The lyrics alone are marvelous, and every time I listen to this album I catch another great line or clever turn of phrase which makes me laugh. But the music--a combo of bluegrass, country, and folk--makes your foot start tapping while your brain leaps to appreciate all of the great lyrics. "Go Out Smokin'" starts with the line: You are the lamest judge I have appeared before." And I defy anyone to listen to Lady Muleskinner without wanting to move at least six parts of their body. Check these folks out for sure! I have four of their albums and though they are all great, this one is the best.

5 out of 5 stars Bluegrass on Steroids.......2001-11-15

Innovative, hysterical, politically incorrect, wildly entertaining, totally sweet and totally raunchy. I absolutely loved every minute of this cd. If you like letting your hair down and singing along, you'll also love this. I'm just sorry that I've never heard them perform in concert.

4 out of 5 stars meat purveyors put on a great show.......2000-07-01

this band was the *unknown* opening for the old 97s. we were SCREAMING for more. she was shaking her tush and winking at the crowd while crooning *i'm more man than you'll ever be and more woman than you'll ever get* - what a great time. and FILTHY jokes between songs. my husband and i rushed to buy this cd the minute they left the stage.

5 out of 5 stars Great Album.......1999-06-18

Pay no attention to the official review above. Who ever wrote it should stick to their Ronnie Milsap CDs and leave real country alone. This album anything but boring. I saw them live in Kansas City and man, let me tell you, what a show. Sweet in the Pants does a good job of capturing that same energy.

4 out of 5 stars Very good first album!.......1998-08-29

I've just come from seeing these folks live in Wichita, and bought the CD immediately. It's a fine piece of bluegrass, with a cutting edge to it (and, occasionally, a little nasty). Nothing pretentious in either the album or the band members, just good music and a lot of fun to listen to.
