kip winger is a very talented singer and song writer. this is his 2nd studio solo album. if you have heard his first solo cd you already know that it's not the same kind of music as he is playing in his band. music is like a mix of sting and peter gabriel, in other words very different. but don't be afraid, this cd is good if you are into that kind of stuff, but if you are looking for party anthems, you should look elsewhere!

5 out of 5 stars One of the best albums in years........2006-05-19

One of the top releases this year. I had no idea what to expect, but I saw it at a store and thought back to my younger days and bought it. I was not disappointed, I was quite simply amazed at the depth of the lyrical content and the melodies. I can not say enough great things about this album, every song is stand alone. You can feel his pain through the lyrics. My favorite songs are "Sure was a wildfire" and the sad "two lovers". Buy this album

3 out of 5 stars Worthy effort, but falls short........2003-08-28

I really like Winger, the man and the band, accomplished musicians crafting enjoyable songs. I think Kip's first solo effort, the Bob Shirley produced "thisconversation..." was and awesome. "Songs from the ocean floor" is, in a word, boring.

It is very telling that the people that buy this cd also purchased Nora Jones. There is nothing wrong with Nora Jones, great background music if you are trying to set a romantic mood or need sound to fill an empty space or having your parents for dinner. Not exactly what you'd expect from Kip Winger. I enjoy deep and moody songs but 60 minutes back to back is a bit much.

This album is well crafted and not a bad listen but nothing stands out, there is one tempo that never changes, and in the end it leaves you feeling empty. I fully understand this record was therapy for Kip and if you are feeling depressed, maybe you will find comfort in a few of the tracks.

I have had this cd since 2000, I bought it directly from Winger website. It is the least listened to of all my winger related cd's. It is worth a listen, you may enjoy it, but I recommend "thisconversationseemslikeadream" as a much better effort and a more enjoyable disc.

5 out of 5 stars Songs from the Ocean Floor was cathartic for me.......2002-02-11

I discovered Kip Winger's solo work only recently after seeing him featured on a VH-1 "Where Are They Now?" episode. When I got this cd, I wasn't exactly sure what to expect but I was pleasantly surprised by the depth of his work. Not only is he a very talented musician and vocalist but he is able to communicate his feelings through his lyrics very well. I think it's sad that many people will only associate him with songs like "Seventeen" from his Winger years because he has so much more depth than that.

Having gone through a tragic loss myself, I found his songs cathartic to listen to because he expressed feelings in such a way that I could not even begin to verbalize. While my heart goes out to him in his pain, I found comfort in knowing someone else understands those feelings and is able to put them in words where I could not. To me, when an artist can connect to their audience on that level it shows their maturity and range of expression.

Kip Winger is no longer the hair metal pin-up from the 80s but has demonstrated on this cd, as well as others, that he has a lot to say and says it well.

5 out of 5 stars Very Well Done.......2001-11-16

There is no really good way to introduce this album to someone who isn't intensely interested in finding great music. That is the only good way to describe it - great music. Kip Winger is simply an outstanding song-writer, singer, and musician. The lyrical content clearly deals with the loss of his wife and his struggle to overcome that grief. That in itself makes this a hard CD to get into unless you really WANT to get into it. Songs... doesn't simply lay out ordinary pop tunes or mindless alternative drivel. Rather it clearly states the pain and process of recovery that Kip went through. This could scare some listeners away, but for intense fans of musical art it should be a welcom alternative to mainstream rock music. Musically there should be no worry by anyone about hearing Kip's 80's sound. There is some similarity to Winger's excellent and underrated album Pull, but largely the music is very fresh and challenging. Listeners will find lots of strings, multiple acoustic guitars and pianos, new age percussion, and eary backing vocals. The sounds are deep and intreaging for anyone willing to sit and listen. There are a lot of sounds that most people won't pick up on the first listen. This makes the album something great to come back to over and over again. Every song on this disc is excellent and well placed. You can listen to it front to back, or split the songs up. It sounds great both ways. Although much of the album is dark and moody, several tracks like "Cross" offer inspiring lines like, "You're not alone when your heart is strong", and the last two tracks offer a thrilling conclusion to the pain and darkness of this album. Songs... doesn't contain the ultimate in progressive instrumantalism or production (sometimes the guitar is annoyingly low in the track), but it is a great CD. Even the two really popish songs "Everything You Need" and "Ressurection" are incredible songs which make you wonder why pop music is so shallow when there are able artists like Kip to be filling the airwaves. Don't be afraid to try this CD. I can guarantee that anyone who really tries can understand and enjoy this album.

4 out of 5 stars Dark and moody.......2001-05-30

This is Kip's third solo release, if you count his acoustic stuff, and the first one with new material written after the tragic death of his wife in a car wreck. And it shows. The whole feel of this CD is somber and dark, not exactly heavy (the distortion on the guitar is fairly light), but minor keys and reflective lyrics reflect Kip's mindset at the time.

He can still pen a good tune, and the songs are mainly strong. I especially like Cross, Crash the Wall, and there's a fantastic instrumental track as well I just love. The mid-tempo tracks are sometimes similar to Winger's third and final CD Pull, but there are also a lot of slow songs, very reflective.

I knocked off a star due to the lack of any upbeat material, but to be honest that's just my opinion, and this CD remains a very strong release.

4 out of 5 stars emotion is the order for the day.......2001-11-26

If your in the mood for maximum intensity of emotion, this is for you. This album was written about the loss of a wife in a young marriage. The songs, while a bit dark (for obvious reasons )are very moving and easy to connect with. The production quality is amazing, Kip does his own music great justice. All of the musicians do a wonderful job of keeping the athmosphere of each song at a fever pitch. Lush orchestrations and percussion flavor each piece, but not overdoing it. The sounds range from "Pink Floydish" to heavy grooves in acoustic mode. One word of warning.....this album is depressing, do not listen to it when in a good mood, ha ha. But if your feeling a loss, or just a case of the blues, light some candles, burn some incense, and embrace a sound that will take your heart and mind on an original journey of heartbreak. Brightest spots are "Wildflower" and "Cross".

Made in JAP in 2001, Serial# MICP-10226, Playing Time 60:39

This is WINGER's 6th album (counting the band's), and is very different from anything KW has done in the past: it took over 1 year for this disc to surface (get it?) as it was recorded back in 1998 and 1999.

The arrangements are much more elaborate than usual, and each track has sort of a rich but muffled texture to it. The occasional presence of strings, the semi-electric arrangements, all this contributes to make for an album that sounds lighter and more polished.

The maturity demonstrated in the song-writing, the emotional singing, all makes for an enjoyable listening experience.

This isn't mainstream rock: it's a great balance between acoustic and electric, and between "naked" and "polished". You'll probably have to listen to it a few times...
