5 out of 5 stars Brings back my childhood memories!.......2007-01-12

These tunes on the CD are AWESOME! Reminds me of sitting in front of our black & white TV, watching the westerns as a kid! Sigh! The "good old days"! This is a great CD to own!

5 out of 5 stars great ride, great memories, great shows,.......2005-11-09

an excellant collection of the western themes from the shows that were a real thrill to watch, and this music is a thrill and treat to listen to also.

4 out of 5 stars Best of the West.......2005-08-19

Great CD - has all the old favorites on it. My husband plays it all the time. A sure winner as a gift for those from the Cowboys on TV Generation.

5 out of 5 stars Gallops down memory lane!.......2000-09-26

My husband and I (forty-somethings)enjoyed every memory, and tried to see who remembered each song first. Our kids just got a kick out of it all. Gotta get this one for my dad!!

5 out of 5 stars Old West favorites ride again.......2000-06-28

Baby boomers who loved watching those old TV westerns in the fifties and sixties will love this disc. These are the original versions of great songs, with full orchestration.

5 out of 5 stars A must buy.......2000-06-27

This CD is worth it's weight in gold. The mix is outstanding. One of the few CD's that you'll enjoy playing straight through time and time again. The songs take us back to a more simple time. Some of the best songs ever written are here. Simple, infectious melodies that will never go out of style. This CD is worth twice it's price. Buy it, you won't be sorry.

1 out of 5 stars Oldies but Goodies 4.......2004-06-15

Poor quality. Does not seem to have any background music. I'm not sure why.

5 out of 5 stars One of the best CD's in this series........2000-05-09

This CD contains a nice variety of oldies. Everybody knows CCR, Buddy Holly, Carl Perkins, Jerry Lee Lewis and the other big names. The true find on this disc is "Silhouettes" by the Rays. It runs circles around the version by Herman's Hermits. Mickey and Sylvia's "Love Is Strange" is also good. Along with the Turtles and the addictive "Teen Beat" by Sandy Nelson makes this a top notch collection.

4 out of 5 stars Only way to get "Silhouettes" by the Rays anywhere!.......2000-03-04

The Rays original version of "Silhouettes" (A bona-fide must-own doo-wop classic) can't be found anywhere else. (I tried!) Even the boys at Rhino can't seem to license the master. Too bad, because the sound on this CD is definitely original, meaning most of these tracks just beg to be remastered. As for the rest of the tracks, seven of them are songs you probably already own a better-sounding copy of. Harder-to-find stuff includes "Harper Valley PTA", "Teenage Prayer", "The Big Hurt", and "Teen Beat". I give it a green light for collectors, but if "Silhouettes" is ever released from legal captivity in a better form, this disc is obselete.

Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars Volume 4 is smashing and has a feel-good feeling!.......2002-10-26

Elvis still shown in the mid-'60s that he still had it despite the British Invasion. Before I go on to say more about this fantastic album, I notice there are 500+ reviews for the Beatles' albums, but only 5+ for Elvis. WHY?! THAT'S NOT FAIR! Elvis will always be to me the greatest rock'n'roll singer ever! You're entitled to your opinion. Getting back to "Elvis' Gold Records Volume 4", this is as equally as fantastic as all of the other Golden Records volumes. They are the essential recordings and musts for every fan. "Return To Sender" is a good way to start this one off. I really like "Ask Me", and "Ain't That Loving You Baby". You'll enjoy this one if you really love Elvis like me.

5 out of 5 stars IT'S NOW ESSENTIAL.......2001-07-08

It's a common fact,ELVIS PRESLEY fans are spoiled, especially since RCA have made their golden records last longer. With this, the company can be sure that ELVIS will continue to sell for a long time. The added tracks here are not fillers, they really deserve to be there. This collection of songs range from gospel to the wonderful movie themes from VIVA LAS VEGAS and KISSIN'COUSINS to soft rock material that is quite fun to listen to and very typical of ELVIS at that time.At the time of the original release of that album 1968,ELVIS was considered finished and washed up;his films were often very ordinary, but the television comeback changed all that and gradually ELVIS managed to redeemed himself to the joy of all his fans. The added tracks makes this golden records collection just as essential as the previous three.

4 out of 5 stars Mid-Sixties Lightheartedness.......2001-03-14

The fourth in a series of "Golden Records" by Elvis. Originally released in 1968 and remade in 1997 with bonus tracks, this album is an easylisting compilation. To close off an era, this album contains 8 of the bigger hits from the movies. Of course, most people know these songs and as a fan I can say: they're nice but not Elvis' best work. But, songs like Return to Sender, Viva Las Vegas and Rock-A-Hula Baby are pleasing to the ear and describe Elvis' sixties career like no other. So: essential songs for any fan.

The remake of this album contains 6 bonus songs, and these non-movie tracks are the best in my opinion. Tracks like Indescribably Blue, Ask Me and Crying in the Chapel are so fresh-sounding, and Elvis' voice was the best then. These songs are a gift to your ears.

So, this album should be in your collection, whether you're a big fan or just an "enjoyer".

5 out of 5 stars The best of the Essential Elvis CDs.......2007-07-08

In my mind this is the best of the essential Elvis releases. The first track I Didn't Make It On Playing Guitar is a classic Elvis jam.Just Pretend,Patch It Up and Bridge Over Troubled water also stand out.Cindy,Cindy and Where Did They Go Lord are Awesome. Its Only Love is one of my favorites. These out-takes and alternate takes are historical not just enjoyable. It gets you inside his historic recording marathon in Nashville. Its the next best thing from going back in time and actually being there. If you don't own this already....you're really missing out.

5 out of 5 stars A Hundred Years From Now.......2007-04-12

More great music from the King. You may think you have heard all of his music, but you'll be surprised with this collection.

5 out of 5 stars That's all in the past........2005-04-28

This CD features unreleased takes of songs that were mostly recorded in June of 1970, with a few tracks recorded up to a year later. This was a definite high point in Elvis' recording career. Elvis was in great voice at the time, and is clearly having fun most of the time. A lot of these alternate takes sound "sloppier" than the master takes, but that just adds to their charm. If you are a fan of Elvis' work in the 1970s, you should get this CD.

5 out of 5 stars ELVIS IN HIS PRIME.......2000-11-11

IF YOU LISTEN CARFULLY TO THIS CD YOU WILL NOTICE A NUMBER OF WORD CHANGES THAT SHOW UP ON HERE AND NOT ON THE ALBUMS LISTEN CAREFULLY TO THE OUTTAKES AND ENJOY THE GOLDEN VOICE AND SONGS NOT ON ANY CD AVAILABLE. AND AS A 35 YEAR COLLECTOR, I HAVE A FEW OF HIS RECORDINGS AND HIS FIRST SONG ON HERE IS NOT ANYWHERE TO BE FOUND

3 out of 5 stars One very amazing track..........2000-09-26

Most of the tracks on Volume 4 are better in their originally released versions, including the stuff that ended up on "Elvis Country" with overdubbed horns. Unlike Volume 5, which shows EP in a very loose and funky mood, the tracks here just sound...professional. The one exception is the undubbed "Bridge Over Troubled Water" with just Elvis, piano, bass, and drums. In this fan's opinion, this is the single greatest recorded moment of EP's entire career, and when he sings "I'm on your side", you'll know everthing the boy from tupelo was all about.

5 out of 5 stars It is not done better than this.......2005-01-15

I am a enthousiastic collector, and have almost all the Time Life rock n roll stuff, as well as Eric Records cds of this era. Although they are essential to any 50s 60s collection, nothing can top ACE series.
I could comment like this on all the 50s remasters of this fabulous record label, not only their other editions, but especially the Golden Age of American Rock n roll. I can not add anything to the positive reviews than simply summing up my personal view:
30 tracks per cd! (Time life is also excellent, but you get 15 per cd!)
excellent booklets with background info (not surpassed by any label).
not the same old songs over again, but many rare and still excellent tracks!
last but not least amazing sound quality.
So although you might have some songs there on other collections, it is for above mentioned points alone worth it to always have an ACE copy as well.

5 out of 5 stars Ace is on a (rock and) roll.......2001-08-20

Has Ace gone off the deep end with this volume in their series that resurrects the lost and found hits of early American rock and roll? Not at all. While only 7 of the 30 tracks here were top-10, there's enough familiar music to hum along with while getting acquainted or reacquainted with lots of forgotten gems and how-did-that-ever-get-into-the-top-100 songs. To keep the repertoire fresh and comprehensive, Ace has now started to mine the vaults of the majors with sides from the likes of Columbia-Epic-Okeh, Atlantic and RCA in this volume. Now we get memory-stirring tunes like "High School USA", the jumping energy of "Don't Let Go" and the long-forgotten "Life's Too Short". And while Ace continues to pursue the vaults for the best available tape sources, they do offer a challange in this volume. There is one cut that was dubbed from disc by the renowned Little Walter DeVenne and they dare you to determine which one it is. And as with previous volumes, the 16-page liner notes booklet is loaded with musical backround notes, pics and promo reproductions. Absolutely fabulous.

4 out of 5 stars More Golden Oldies From the UK's Reissue King.......2000-07-22

A bit of a drop off in song selection in ACE's volume 4 of this terrific pre-British Invasion (1954-1963) series of American pop/rock music. Each of the first three volumes included several songs that failed to reach the Top 40, but this time it's almost a third of the total--nine to be exact. And in a couple instances (Nappy Brown and the Royalteens), the artist's only Top 40 hit was overlooked in favor of the song included on this anthology. [Although in the case of Brown, his No. 25 hit "Don't Be Angry" does show up on volume 8.] So you're going to get a number of unfamiliar songs like Don French's "Lonely Saturday Night," the Lafayettes "Life's Too Short," and the Roommates' "The Glory of Love."

But as with the other volumes in this series, it's the joy of getting to hear infrequently anthologized gems like Little Caesar's "Those Oldies But Goodies," the Dubs' "This Could Be Magic" and Billie & Lillie's "Lucky Ladybug"; as well as the more familiar hits like Dion's "Drip Drop," Buddy Knox's "Party Doll," and Little Anthony & the Imperials' "Tears on My Pillow." When you add it all up into one generous 30-track CD, you get a more accurate picture of the American popular music landscape of the era than if all you got were the same big hits available on numerous collections.

Almost as much fun as listening to these golden oldies, is reading the 20-plus pages of information about each of the artists and songs. Did you know the Edsels released "Rama Lama Ding Dong" three years before it became a hit in 1961 as "Lama Rama Ding Dong"? [What a difference a title makes!] Atlantic Records released 28 separate versions of Tommy Facenda's 1959 hit "High School USA," each one mentioning actual high schools by name in a specific geographic location throughout the United States. Duane Eddy plays acoustic guitar on Donnie Owens' 1958 hit "Need You." The Rocky Fellers consist of a father and his four sons from the Philippines--their surname is Feller. The Regents first recorded "Barbara Ann" as a demo in 1958. When the song became a hit in 1961, the group had disbanded.

This is fascinating music, and there are intriguing stories behind each song and artist. If this set is a little weaker than its three predecessors, it still is an amazing collection and this series as a whole is unmatched. RECOMMENDED

4 out of 5 stars A trip into the past.......2000-06-22

The CD is an excellent example of the songs from this period. While many of the titles were unfamiliar to me, (and they should have been as this was the time of my youth) the ones I knew were well presented. All tracks were clean, clear music - no unwanted noise. I purchased this CD to get a new copy of a specific title and the cost was equivalent to finding this title on a used record. I got everything else as a bonus and am very pleased.

      4 out of 5 stars Rock-A-Billy Review.......2007-05-02

Another good album by the Bear Family in this series. As with all of the cd's the liner notes are a good history of the people and the music and help make the price more bearable. Like the song selection, but like discs 10, 16, 17 and 2 better.

      3 out of 5 stars Rockabilly?.......2005-07-11

Well, I can tell you that this compilation has nothing to do with rockabilly. But it's intresting anyway. It is more garage rock and roll from the sixties, featuring artists like Billy Barry ("They Call Me Willie The Wild One" and "My Love Is True" are absolutely my favourites from this cd), Billy Balls (who played around with Cheetah Chrome, ex. The Dead Boys and got shot to death), Charlie Starr, ex. Black Sabbath singer Ronnie Dio (here with two songs "Do the Oop-Poo-Pah -Doo" and "Love Pains") and Otis Blackwell's song that was covered by Elvis Presley "One Broken Heart For Sale".

3 out of 5 stars Great Collection, but weak link in series.......2000-08-28

I have over half of this great rockabilly series. Each volume feaures a different record company, and some of the rockabilly that they released back in the genre's day. There are some darn fine songs that haven't seen a mass audience since the 50's, some not at all. Volume four cover a record label called Festival, which operated in New York in the 60's. The high point of the Rockabilly scene was in the late 50's to early 60's, the earliest track on this collection is 1961, as the scene was winding down. The tracks on this disc do rock, but they show obvious influence from Rock that came after Rockabilly, some an almost California 60's rock. A nice point of interest on this disc: The original demo for One Broken Heart for Sale by Otis Blackwell is present. This song would eventually be performed by Elvis in it happened at the Worlds Fair. (Blackwell also wrote Don't Be Cruel). Also there are two numbers by a man named Ronnie Dio. The same Dio who would eventually go on to front Black Sabbath after Ozzie Osbourne left. My biggest let down with this disc though was how light it is. The majority of this series all feature around 30 tracks each. The Festival volume only has 16. If you are someone who is just getting into Rockabilly or just beginning to research the history of the music try another volume (like vol. 1-3 which are all very strong.). This is not really the place to start, but if you are a completist or looking for some Rockabilly outside the norm, try this disc.
