Don't Waste Your Money.......2007-07-06
I'm a fan of Quicksilver and saw them many times, but this recording is just horrible. Big dropouts where everyone's playing and then, blam, just a vocal and a tinny guitar, then it will switch back to the full band. Almost like someone was going "what's this switch do?".
This recording is just horrible and should never have been commerically released.
An Important Relic.......2007-06-18
I was fortunate to see Quicksilver Messenger Service in concert on two occasions, and this welcome release is a terrific souvenir of a great band. The sound quality is hardly state of the art, but that's a minor quibble. Of primary importance is the fact that this is the only live document (except for bootleg recordings) of QMS with both John Cippolina and Dino Valenti in the line-up. And as David Crosby once declared, Valenti "does his level best to stir up your guts with a spoon!" I prefer Dino's ballads (check out his 1968 solo album), but here he's obviously "up" for a largely high voltage gig. Even if one finds his voice an acquired taste, the double leads by Cippolina and Gary Duncan are not to be missed. In the final analysis, well over half of what's presented here is essential Quicksilver.
Performance pretty inspired, recording primitive.............2007-06-18
Back around the time this was recorded, Stereo Review magazine was publishing some fabulous monthly reviews of contemporary music, written by Mr. Steve Simels. Back in that analog age, it was necessary to divide the review into two pieces, the quality of the music and the quality of the actual recording. The recording here, most of the time, sounds like it was done on a battery powered mini reel to reel, and occasionally spliced together from different source tapes! Jarring changes in volume and tone, muffles, etc. As to the music, the first CD is pretty doggone inspired, rocks on very well, maybe the liveliest version of "You're Gonna Need Somebody On Your Bond" (mis-typed as "Band") I ever heard. Dino Valente's distinct high lonesome vocals, solid drumming, driving guitars, etc. The second disc is generally painful with a few bright moments, but mostly dispensable.
A very enjoyable recording.......2007-06-08
This is a most enjoyable recording which benefits from being played repeatedly, loud, in a car with a good stereo with at leat four speakers. Initially, indoors, I was disappointed because I thought John Cipollina was too far back in the mix and I wasn't sure about the sound quality. But, like many live recordings, it improves the more you listen to it. There is improvisation and atmosphere in the performance, which is not present in the studio material of this period. When you know what to listen for, you will hear John playing on the left and Gary on the right, "duelling" wonderfully, with probably the best live vocal permormances I have heard by the band. As someone who is too young to have seen the band live, this is a delight. I wish some more recordings would be released.
For Die-Hard Fans Only.......2007-06-02
I'm a sucker when it comes to Quicksilver Messenger Service. I fell in love with Happy Trails, and really enjoyed their first album. Everything else after that was always a hit and miss proposition. Each subsequent album had it's glorious moments, but were interspersed with sub-par, almost amateur songs. And... I hate Dino's voice. But... this album had the dual guitar attack of John and Gary, and the set-list didn't sound half bad, so I plunked down the money to buy it. As mentioned before, this is from a radio broadcast so the quality of the song is good, but not great (and sometimes bad). The performances, again, are hit and miss. And... no one in the band seems to know how to end a song! So many flubs. But... there are some great guitar solos, and for the most part John and Gary are sounding great.
If you don't know who QMS is, then get Happy Trails. You won't be disappointed. If you are a "completist", then add this to your collection. Just be forewarned the quality of the recording is just so-so. There are a few gems in here, but also a lot of mediocre stuff as well.

Good solid performance.......2007-04-11
If you've heard the Derek Trucks Band then you'll want this. It is a good solid performance, maybe not as controlled as the DVD Songlines Live, and a lot looser. This sounds like they're testing out some of the material that ended up on Songlines and it is interesting to see where it is here.
Stop reading the reviews and just buy it - you'll like it.
Keep track of this young man.......2005-12-17
Derek Trucks is a remarkable, emerging improviser. He, with the support of a solid, capable band, is interpreting songs in a soulful, heart-felt way, delivering music with a distinctive sound and feel.
Watch him play, and you'll see a young man peacefully focused on reaching into the music. He doesn't waste an ounce of energy on posturing, wincing, or going through the choreographed paces too often seen in many of his contemporaries.
Reminiscent of the great East West era Paul Butterfield Band, featuring Mike Bloomfield and Elvin Bishop, this group, driven by Truck's passionate guitar, has updated the 60's to full-blown turn of the century fusion.
Get it, but don't get ripped off by people pretending it's a hard to find import. Go to the source - hittinthenote dot com - and pay the players.
Great CD.......2005-12-06
I Went to this show, and I recorded it with a little hand held tape recorder. Of course, it sounded terrible, but at least I could hear it again. Now I got it on cd, and it sounds great! I've seen Derek Trucks 6 times over the past 10 years, and this is the best I've ever heard them play. This cd is a must have!
Watchout for the import, it only has one disk, and half of the show!
Also if you are having trouble finding it, try the Derek Trucks web site, you can get it there!
ESSENTIAL for fans.......2005-12-05
For fans of Trucks and The Allman Brothers this live recording needs no more recommendation, it is a great show and recording; familiar songs but done with enough variation to keep it interesting.
For the casual listener there is alot to recommend here as well. A killer tight (but loose) band playing their eclectic mix of southern rock-funk-jazz-blues with passion and playful virtuosity. There is no mistaking this band's sound, the funky groove and sinuous slide. This may not be a recording for all moods (Truck's tends to sound like he's working a large power tool when he gets warmed up), but it is great for what it is. (Look online at the Hittinthenote website to order more cheaply and easily)
Why this isn't more available is beyond me..........2005-11-04
This double-set CD is, in a word, fantastic. I am amazed and incredulous that it is only available either as an import or through the occasional vendor for over 25 bucks. This one should be on everyone's holiday want list! If you are familiar with Derek Trucks, this live set extends the jam and expands the fusion. Blistering guitar by young Derek hisself, plus the funk/jazz flute by Hofi Burbridge, new vocals by Mike Mattison, and the groove laid down by Yonrico Scott & Count M'Butu (and Todd Smallie on bass). A bit of Allmans old and new, jammin' like Gov't Mule, and throw some hot jazz in there (at times I heard shades of 70's Herbie Mann...ooo!), plus de funk (kind of a touch of Santana, too). It's just perfect. Not sure if you're in the mood for jazz or funk or blues or rock? No problem! Stick this in your player and get down-- or get up. You can do both, or either. Someone, somehow should make this more accessible and affordable. This ain't no commercial pop-crap; this is quality music. Derek Trucks is a genius. This is my choice for the best of the year. Find it, buy it, have fun, enjoy!

pretty good, but not great.......2007-01-12
This is the third album by Motley. They had already become arena warriors with their previous album "Shout at the Devil". While "Shout" and "To fast for love were great", this album finds Motley Crue slipping a bit. Their are some good songs:"Save our souls, Louder then hell, Home sweet home, but their are also plenty of filler like "fight for your rights" and "Raise your hand to rock". The punk feel and attitude of their first two albums is all but abandoned. While the songs are as catchy as ever, Motley Crue sounds slightly subdued. It's a good album, but after the first two discs Motley Crue seems like their excesses are starting to catch up to them.
Theatre of Pain, a hard to rate album........2006-11-23
The Theatre of Pain album came out in 1985 right when hair metal was starting to take over the scene. Now Motley Crue were always more glam then hair, but in this album they are full blown hair metal, and thats not nessecarily a bad thing. However, this album pictures Motley Crue at there worst shape, all 4 members were dependent on drugs and it was starting to slur there music and song writing. Along with the fact a few songs were over played. Let's look at the cd packaging.
Cd is remastered perfectly with bonus tracks and is in hard cover case. 5/5
Inserts - alot of cool photo's, linear notes from the band members, and song lyrics are all included. 5/5
Song time
City Boy Blues - This is my favorite track on the album, its got good lyrics and good music to go along with it, a great opener. 5/5
Smokin' in the Boys Room - This song is one of the most over rated, and over played Motley Crue songs, it dosen't even sound that good, if it weren't so played it might not be so bad but in this case it is, I do listen to it but not very often. 2/5
Louder Then Hell - This is a short song, with some good lyrics and good music to back it up, my 2nd favorite song on the cd. 5/5
Keep Your Eye on the Money - This song was a message from the band telling them not to sell out and make sure you know your audience, its an ok song with good music. 4/5
Home Sweet Home - This is the better of the singles for this cd, but this one isn't that good either, its highly over rated but its better then smokin'. 3/5
Tonight (we need a lover) - This song isn't that bad, its got ok lyrics and ok music, but just not that super, 4/5
Use it OR Lose it - Another short song on the cd but this one sounds decent. 4/5
Save Our Souls - this song seems a bit repetitive, but it still sounds ok, just not superb. 4/5
Raise Your Hands to Rock - This song is not that good, Vince's voice sounds annoying on it, and the music isn't that good and its short in time length. 2/5
Fight for Your Rights - This song is good, it had good lyrics and the music is good enough to back it up. 5/5
Bonus Tracks -
Home Sweet Home Demo - This demo actually sounds better then the song, if they had put this one on instead of the one they did, it would have been a better song. 4/5
Smokin' in the boys room - It dosen't have the harmonica on it, which does make the song sound a little better. 3/5
City Boy Blues - This demo is actually better then the song they put on it, and I love the one they put on it. 5/5
Home Sweet Home instrumental - this is ok, just its not that good. 2/5
Keep Your Eye on the Money - Once again, this demo is better then the song. 5/5
Tommy's Drum piece - This is a rare track that has alot of value for true crue fans, 5/5
Along with a video for Home Sweet Home - that video is ok, but not good enough. 3/5
So over all if they had put the demo's on it instead if would have sounded alot better, it would have sounded more like Shout at the Devil. However they were in the studio for months doing this cd, and it was way too over glossed.
overall rating - 4/5
Forget about the singles!.......2006-09-04
Besides Smokin' and Home Sweet Home, I think this Crue album rocks....Use it or Lose it, Louder than Hell, Fight for your Rights, Tonight, etc. Who really cares what trend was goin on....forget the fashion for a minute and listen to the tunes.
Im into much heavier stuff these days, but I always dug the Crue's brand of rock and roll, and this one jams......they just need to re-release it without the above mentioned Home..and Smokin.
rocks hardcore.......2006-07-15
one of my favorite Motley Crue Albums, i bought this when it first came out and played it so much that i wore it out. i really recommend this to anyone new to crue :)
hegelian self-alienation.......2006-06-24
this is the 2nd worst example of a band merely following a trend that they themselves had initiated; instead of the stuff coming out of themselves, they wind up imitating themselves, imitating the people that had imitated them in the first place. on their 1st and best album, "Too Fast for Love" mot cru didn't know what they were doing: punk, pop, metal, all of the above. This made it raw, edgy, unformulaic. As their direction became more focused with the 2nd album, "Shout at the Devil", they basically invented glam metal, or at least were in on the ground floor. It came from within, unpremeditated. But then with "Theater of Pain", it's like they were consciously saying "hey, let's be glam metal", and ended up looking like a parody of themselves, imitating their imitators, like Ratt or Cinderella or whatever. And the songwriting was strictly mediocre. They did return to form somewhat with grls x3 and dr. flgd.
Just in case you're wondering, the all-time worst instance of this syndrome is the once-mighty Metallica's unlistenable "St Anger", where they sound like they're copying the nu-metal/rap-metal folks that had learned everything they knew from Metallica in the first place.

Their Odessey and Oracle is considered a pop classic, but unfortunately the Zombies had disbanded by the record's 1968 release. Four decades later, eternal versions of that album's "This Will Be Our Year," "A Rose for Emily," "Beechwood Park," "Care of Cell 44," and "Time of the Season" make this 25-song live reunion of founding members Colin Blunstone and Rod Argent worth the effort. Though no other Zombie was aboard for the 2004 project (including underrated guitarist/vocalist Chris White), Argent's burning keyboards, Blunstone's inimitable voice, and skilled backing musicians assure that the entire band receives its due, particularly on the Odessey selections and nuggets from the singles collection, including Argent's "Tell Her No" and "Indication," Blunstone's "Just Out of Reach," and White's "I Love You." The harmonic backing vocals that littered the Zombies catalog are astoundingly intact, with only the occasional ramble into Argent's eponymous post-Zombies band (remember "Hold Your Head Up"?) left to clutter the sequencing. (A 16-song DVD of performances from the Bloomsbury Theatre show is also available, including multiple camera angles, immaculate sound, and four of the CD's five Odessey and Oracle numbers.) --Scott Holter
Album Description
Captured live in the West End of London at the famed Bloomsbury Theatre, this 2005 concert brings the house down with an empeccably recorded program of timeless Zombie hits, Argent classics, solo Blunstone gems, and more!
Customer Reviews:
The Return of the Zombies.......2007-06-28
I have always been a fan of Argent. And to see them live on DVD after all these years, was a rare treat. I've watched the concert DVD a couple of times, yet, I can honestly say the price was worth it just to see Rod Argent play his craft. I'm just a sucker for Hammond B3 players. While the Leslie speakers aren't twirling on the sides, watching Rod play is pure "Pleasure". Colin is singing with passion, the drums and base play to the talent around them, the strings were a nice addition. The bands song selection included all thier major hits, especially God Gave Rock and Roll to You, and Hold Your Head Up.
Thanks for the reuniting of this great group! It's really a trip to be able to finally see one of my early hero's live, since I never had the chance to see Argent live in concert.
By the way, if you really like Rod Argent, look for "Red House". It's quite a departure of his "fury on the organ", more laid back and introspective, yet shows his talent as a composure.

Excellent glimpse of one of the greatest bands of the 60s........2007-06-09
While Colin Blunstone hay have aged, his voice sounds almost as good as it did 40 years ago. Versions of "Care of Cell 44", "Time Of the Season", "Tell Her No" , and an uptempo cover of "What Becomes Of the Brokenhearted" incorporate the breathy vocals of Blunstone with the one of a kind keyboard playing of Rod Argent. This is a must own for true Zombies fans as it provides a very rare live performance from a band that broke up before their huge success with the album "Odessey and Oracle"
Nice to Hear Them Again, but Where Is Chris White?.......2007-05-25
In the broadest sense, I think it's fair to say that the Zombies got a raw deal. They were one of the most talented and intelligent bands during the latter part of the British invasion, and yet they were thrown on the scrap heap of history. Two ridiculously catchy hit singles swept through America during our '64-'65 obsession with the London scene; "Tell Her No" and "She's Not There" combine raw rock and roll with a jazz sensibility that still sounds fresh today. Subsequently, their record company rewarded the band by refusing to issue their brilliant psychedelic album masterpiece entitled "Odessey and Oracle." Thankfully, Al Kooper (of Blood, Sweat & Tears, the Dylan sessions, et. al.) saw the folly of this decision and begged Columbia to right the situation. Eventually, the album saw daylight, but sold poorly, despite the extracted single that became a best seller. "Time of the Season" sounded ahead of its time in 1968, despite the fact that it was recorded nearly two years before its release. Eventually, the band collapsed under the weight of so much indifference, and the most we've heard since then is the occasional project by keyboardist Rod Argent.
"Live at Bloomsbury Theatre" celebrates the reunion of Rod Argent with vocalist Colin Blunstone. Technically, they alone cannot represent a reforming of the Zombies, since songwriter/vocalist Chris White has always been an integral part of the band. His absence is felt, but after so much time, it's nice to hear these tunes, even without White's crucial input. The CD is a generous 2-disk set containing 25 songs, while the DVD pairs the song selection down to a less unwieldy 15 tracks. The editing is a good thing, allowing the video to hold the viewer's interest significantly better than the CD collection. All of the major hits are here, including Argent's best-known solo work, such as "Hold Your Head Up" and "God Gave Rock and Roll to You." The performances are admirably executed, often utilizing a string section to augment that standard rock and roll configuration of the actual band. Argent sounds great and Blunstone is in fine voice throughout. In summation, "Live at the Bloomsbury" is a fine but faulted collection, never quite transcending its aura of nostalgia, while glossing over the absence of Chris White. B Tom Ryan

Armchair Theater: Jeff Lynne's Overlooked Masterwork.......2007-05-24
I must admit up front to being an enthusiast of Jeff Lynne's work ever since the first strains of Electric Light Orchestra's "New World Record" began to be heard on American FM radios. I owned all of the original ELO albums, and began to recollect them as CDs when as an aging adult, I particularly missed hearing the music. Somewhere along the way I came across "Armchair Theatre" and had to give it a try.
What a treat! "Armchair Theatre" is a banquet. It includes a smoking cover of Jesse Stone's "Don't Let Go" (made famous by Jerry Lee Lewis in 1965), and two "standards" -- Koehler and Arlen's "Stormy Weather" and Weil and Anderson's 1938 "September Song" --poignantly rendered here by Lynn singing lead vocal.
There are also seven original compositions by Lynne (not released on prior ELO albums in case you are wondering) and one by Lynne and Tom Petty. Lynne's performance in "Don't Say Goodbye" recalls the otherworldly haunting clarity of the late Roy Orbison, with guitar riffs that recall George Harrison (except that Harrison adds slide guitar and vocal backup to other tracks but NOT to this one). The usual last of the ELO support crew (Tandy, Mathiesen) are in on the performance with crisp drums and background melodies.
There is no worry that the ELO sound is missing. "What Would it Take?" "Every Little Thing" and "Lift Me Up" are delivered in classic Electric Light Orchestra style and will particularly please ELO enthusiasts who rate "Time" as one of the better "theme albums" delivered by any studio band since the Beatles threw in the towel. "Blown Away" recalls the more ambient ELO sound of earlier songs like "Strange Magic."
The one weak spot is the closing entry "Save Me Now" -- a somewhat campy, plaintive entry lamenting the environmental degradation of our planet. The narrative feels awkward and forced. But then, maybe that was the intention, since global warming, and the concomitant effects, will likely also seem awkward and forced.
Gets better with every listen.......2006-12-19
Like most, I got this album because I liked ELO. This is definitely not an ELO album although some of the production has a bit of that feel (no big surprise as Jeff Lynne is probably now equally famous as a producer). This album is mostly standards (Stormy Weather, that sort of thing) but they are very well done and really show off Lynne's voice, musicianship, and production style.
Over the 16 years since its release I keep hitting this album in my play mix and enjoy it more and more and now it is probably one of my favorites of all time. I hope it is re-released so others can enjoy it as well-- when it is-- when it is I urge you to snap it up quickly. If you haven't listened to the Traveling Wilburys work he's done you might also want to check that out since it is also very very good.
Hidden treasures.......2005-12-26
Jeff Lynne has a tendency to overproduce things, multi-tracking and overdubbing his music to death. He keeps his bombastic tendencies on a relatively short leash this time out, and while the songs here are still a bit overdone, his catchy pop melodies shine through.
The lead track "Every Little Thing" is a bouncy homage to classic Motown R&B, with a nice fat bass line and rich horn section. His covers of the classic torch songs "September Song" and "Stormy Weather" are especially noteworthy, because Lynne proves himself to be a very competent crooner. His sentimental renditions of these rank up there with the best. "Now You're Gone" is intriguing because it showcases Lynne using his voice like never before or since, along microtonal scales in an Indian or Middle Eastern style, as he wails for his lost love. "Don't Say Goodbye" is the kind of mournful appeal that Lynne's late Traveling Wilburys bandmate, Roy Orbison, built a career on. Lynne's voice doesn't have the range or timbre of Orbison's (hell, whose does? Orbison was one-of-a-kind.) but it can still evoke a deep melancholy.
In short, one helluva collection of fine pop songs, just barely hidden beneath a layer of production gloss. Check it out.
A very personal project.......2005-01-26
A little gem of an album that is becoming increasingly rare as it spends further years inexplicably out of print. Other reviewers got it spot on when commenting that this is definitely not ELO. But it was never meant to be. There is a very down to earth and back to basics feel to this very personal and intentionally self-indulgent project, clearly influenced and possibly inspired by recent collaborations with Tom Petty, Roy Orbison, George Harrison et al. The sound that Lynne played such an integral part in creating on albums such as 'Full Moon Fever' and 'Cloud Nine', also runs through this work. Beautifully crafted songs appear all over this rather too short masterpiece, interestingly most of which were recorded in various rooms in Lynne's very own mansion. Although often accused of "over-producing" songs, this is not very apparent on this album, as most of the songs have an almost 'live' and intimate feel to them, perhaps because we're listening to Jeff as he is rocking away in his living room or kitchen! Other than his enormous producing expertise, Lynne's biggest asset is his astounding and unfailing voice that lends itself so effortlessly to multi-layer harmonies, to best effect on my personal favourite 'What Would It Take'. The covers of a couple of standards detract a little from the overall direction of this album, leaving the listener a touch confused about what Lynne was trying to achieve. My personal feeling is that Jeff made this album and recorded all of the stylistically varied songs on it because he wanted to do it, which is not at all selfish or too much to ask from someone who has greatly inspired others over the years and more recently, resurrected the careers of some of his own musical heroes.
Jeff Lynne SHINES.......2005-01-17
If you love the music of Jeff Lynne in ELO, you will LOVE this CD. I am a very picky fan of The Beatles and Jeff, and this CD has been a constant in my player since its release. "Blown Away" is a fantastic song, and sums up the "Armchair Theatre" experience for me...gawd, I love Jeffy....

Out on the road without Pigpen, their original spiritual leader who was well on his way to death by drink, the Dead moved into a new phase in the fall of 1972. Piano player Keith Godcheaux gave them a more melodic, grounded sound, which was especially beneficial on the newer Amerciana-type material they'd unveil, but also gave them a jazzier feel on their freer explorations as well. This tight New Jersey concert treads similar ground to the Europe '72 collection (minus the Pigpen tunes), an "official" album that had been recorded earlier that year but hadn't yet been released. A few oddities distinguish this show. The dramatic ballad "Morning Dew," usually a second-set climax, starts the proceedings here, followed soon after by an electric reading of "Friend of the Devil" that's taken at the faster "acoustic" pace. What's more, they open the second set with "He's Gone," another particularly mellow set opener. There are also a number of tunes from the solo albums released earlier that year (a ripping "Deal" and a probing "Bird Song" from Garcia, plus more than half of the songs on Bob Weir's Ace, which was really a Dead album anyway). The second set in particular offers a number of highlights, peaking in the last hour with a snaking, sparkling, ebbing-and-flowing 30-minute "Dark Star," which magically morphs into an explosive "Cumberland Blues." They then move through a pretty, poignant "Attics of My Life," and end with a pair of roaring Chuck Berry tunes sandwiching a pair of beloved Dead classics, including a steamrolling "Casey Jones." A worthy alternative to Europe '72 and even stronger at times. --Marc Greilsamer
Customer Reviews:
one of my favorite Dick's Picks.......2006-10-07
I'd give this 4.5 star, but I had to round up....
This was a great period for Dead shows, and this is no exception. The Bird Song is one of my 2-3 favorites ever, and the Dark Star is superlative. Interesting set list too...
The next night (same venue) was a superb show also. It's a popular show among traders.
Nothing Left To Do But Smile, Smile, Smile........2005-12-30
My musical tastes continue to expand and broaden. I constantly search for new music, new genres, new approaches. But, then, there is my Comfort Music. Like a bowl of matzo ball soup when I've got a cold, there are some things that will always need to be there for me. The Grateful Dead is my Comfort Music, mother's milk for my ears (if that isn't too disturbing of an analogy).
When I'm on call, lying in the call room trying to get to sleep, I have the sounds of the cardiac ICU, with all the bells and beeps, in the not so distant background. I have my pagers lying next to me, and the constant fear that comes with them, the knowledge that they can go off at any second and ruin my night. And ruin my next day. A rough call can throw me off for several days actually, and it is difficult to describe the angst that goes along with that, even on a quiet night.
But there's always Jerry and the rest of the boys. Putting on a bootleg and letting myself get lost in a good spacey jam is the perfect antidote. I can clear my mind and try to follow nothing but the music.
I'm not a snob about sound quality. Better quality beats bad quality, but short of that I don't worry about it too much. I have plenty of distant generation bootleg tapes complete with hisses, clicks, static, and feedback (not too mention Donna's wailing). But, like listening to the snaps and pops of an old Bessie Smith blues recording, sometimes the poor sound quality can become part of the musical ambience. Don't try to listen around it, just listen through and within it.
The Dick's Picks series has been great for me. I don't have time anymore to trade tapes or to figure out all this online MP3 stuff. Dick had a good ear for shows, and I'm always happy to put on a Dick's Pick, listen to that first wall of crowd noise as the band tunes up, and get that contact tingle. I may change from day to day but volume 11 always stays at the top of my list. 1972 was a great period for the Dead, musically at least if not personally, with the sound moving into a jazzier direction. The show opens with Morning Dew, which already tells you that something special is going to happen. There's a Mexicali Blues, Tennessee Jed, Bird Song, and strong Friend of the Devil as well, all good solid Set One tunes. CD 2 has a great China > Rider, Playing in the Band, and He's Gone, back when Jerry could still sing "nothing left to do but smile, smile, smile" in one breath. The Dark Star on CD 3 is magical, into a Cumberland Blues. We also get a Casey Jones, and Uncle John's Band. There's a nice Attics as well (a special song for me, I was at the Shoreline show when they revived Attics in the Vince era).
Reading other reviews just goes to show how subjective this stuff is. It could have to do with where I was and what I was doing, what the music initially did for me when I first heard, but for me, Dick's Picks 11, 10, 3, 8, 12 are my favorites, and I haven't even heard any since the mid-twenties. But I enjoy them all, good, bad, or mediocre, full shows or composites, just let me close my eyes and lose myself in the hum of the crowd.
Nothing left to do...
This was the weakest night of the run.......2005-07-27
I can't for the life of me understand why Dick chose this night over the practically impeccable Thursday 9-28 show, or the Tuesday 9-26. Both were FAR better.
This show has several highlights. Uncle John's Band is fine. The Attics was a REAL treat. Beyond that..? The Dark Star goes NOWHERE. Compared to the fantastic Other One jam from Thursday... what was Dick thinking?
The Tuesday night had several stellar highlights: A *wonderful* Baby Blue (it is a crime that the Stanley's were picked and this Baby Blue -- possibly the best they ever played -- doesn't appear); a beautiful and precise reading of Tomorrow is Forever, and a wonderful bass solo that bridged Truckin' jam into Other One, which apparently may have been lost due to a reel-changing.
This was a great run of shows, but after all these years, I was very disappointed, and quite frankly confused, by Dick's choice for this middle night over the clearly superior other nights.
off nites.......2003-07-23
I'm somewhat baffled by the high ratings this set has received because it's just not that good. Weir's playing on China Cat is plain wrong, the vocals overall tend to be ragged, and Garcia is too low in the mix. Yes, there are moments ("Dark Star" among them), but I've never understood how this one got released. For all its slickness, "Europe '72," especially the recent reissue, blows this away, as do other Dick's Picks (like #1 & #16, just to name two). There are some real clunkers in this series and this is one of them.
FIVE STARS FOR DARK STAR VERSION ON THIS ALONE!f.......2002-02-16
WOW! The DARK STAR version (30 minutes!) is THE reason to buy this CD although there are some other great moments on here too. I particularly like the sweet BROKEDOWN PALACE on the first CD and then REALLY like the awesome version of PLAYING IN THE BAND; yeah there are some better versions out there, but this is a good one. Finally, to the heart of this CD: CD # 3- SWEET! DARK STAR is the first song and for a few months it seemed like the first CD I would play when in any doubt about what I wanted to hear. IT IS THE BEST VERSION! (Again there may be some bettter ones- but where?) The music is relaxing and takes me into another world when I listen to it, making me forget this was done live because it seems so calculated and rehearsed to create the wonderful sounds! CUMBERLAND BLUES is interesting, but there has been more than one occasion when I have shed a tear over ATTICS OF MY LIFE with the heartfelt efforts of the band. UNCLE JOHN'S BAND is the last highlight and (again) maybe not the finest version out there but a fine tune nonetheless. This rocks!

Toad on the Road.......2007-02-04
Toad The Wet Sprocket were riding at their peak when this concert took place. "Fear" became their biggest seller and the top forty welcomed "All I Want" and "Walk On The Ocean." This being a homecoming concert, both the band and their Santa Barbara fans were stoked, and the show comes off as a hero's welcome.
The band has always been underrated, and the compositions here (from the first three albums) show a lot of strength. Glen Phillips' gifts as a song-writer have never been truly recognized. While he (and the band, who co-wrote the majority of the material) did cultivate a folkish and, even at a certain level, mellow sound, there is a dark streak to many of their best songs. "One Little Girl" and "Hold Her Down" are unflinching takes on abuse, while "I Will Not Take These Things For Granted" may be the most beautiful song to never hit the top-40. They were also not shy from experimenting, as "Butterflies" shows. (Love the Beatles quote at the end!)
All in all, "Welcome Home: Live" shows Toad The Wet Sprocket in full gale as a band. A band that toughed it out through years on the road and a couple of poorly selling albums to develop the chemistry and the tenacity that they were still there when the lucky break occurred. Along with the "P.S." best of collection, this CD is a terrific representation of the band at their toadiest. Incidentally, Phillip's post-toad solo work is quite good. Check it out.
It's live Toad, what else do you need to know?.......2005-12-06
Oh man, what a gem for fans. This live disc from 1992 is nearly flawless. It does only draw from the first three albums, but that's exactly why I love it. It has numerous songs from both their debut and my favorite album "Pale", and roughly half the disc is from "Fear", which is their hit-heavy and most popular album. Plus this is 19 tracks and 74 minutes long. The songs stick to the originals for the most part, but being live gives them a nice fresh sound. Glen speaks at a few points, but keeps to jamming for the most part. I really have no complaints with the tracklist, but in a perfect world this would also include "Covered In Roses" and "High On A Riverbed". Still, it's an excellent live record, and a must for Toad-heads.
The definitive Toad album for their long-time fans........2005-04-08
I don't know how else to put it. This album is amazing. It captures Toad at their best, when it comes to live performances. It's a shame these guys didn't get more recognition.. they much more than deserved it.
Anyway, as I said, this is the boys at their best. Everything is spot on. Every song sounds just as good as their studio counterparts, and some are even better. The emotion and musicianship put into each song are unparalleled by almost any of today's top bands.
If you are a bigger fan of Toad's later works (Dulcinea and Coil sessions), you may not enjoy this as much, since this was a performance from 92. Naturally, it encompasses their first 3 albums. You might want give the samples a good listen or 2 before you decide on making this purchase.
But if you are a long time fan, and/or if you enjoy their early albums, you MUST BUY THIS NOW!! It is that good. I bought it about a month ago, and it is has never left my cd changer since...
This is the Toad album I have been waiting for.
Great live show from one of rocks's most overlooked bands.......2005-03-31
Finally, a live CD from Toad the Wet Sprocket. It's about time! And it surely doesn't disappoint. This band never got half the credit or recognition they deserved. But this CD is one treat for those of us who were fortunate enough to follow them throughout the years. My only complaint is that "Good Intentions" is not here. But that's all right. The outstanding quality of the album as a whole speaks for itself, and is reason enough to get this. If you're new to Toad the Wet Sprocket, I would recommend getting their studio albums first and then picking up this one. And for the long-time fan, get this NOW. Toad may be no more, but they sure left behind some great music.
Rare Gem-A MUST buy!!!.......2005-01-29
This album offers something for everyone, whether it be the seasoned fan or a newcomer to Toad's music. The versions of All I Want, Fall Down, and I Won't Take These Things for Granted are stellar, and some of the songs, like Know Me, are augmented with some new lyrics and intros. It's a perfect representation of what this band was capable of, and makes me wish they were still together. There are some neat little anecdotes from Glen (Is It for Me?, Brother), and the crowd is supportive, but not overbearing. This has to be one of the finest live recordings I've encountered recently. Even if you just remember Toad the Wet Sprocket from the early 90s, pick up this CD. You won't regret it. I can only hope there will be others.

Album Description
Collaboration between singer/poet Rozz Williams & Rikk Agnew. 16 tracks. 1982.
Customer Reviews:
Classic!.......2007-06-27
All of these songs are classics, why even argue about it? This band has been imitated and venerated by so many others, Christian Death definitely started something here. The only thing is, I'm not so sure if the other copycats understand the complexity of Williams' music and ideas. His own wife said that in 1994 Rozz told her he "had accepted Jesus." And before he died "he called his mother and let her know that he accepted the Lord. In his last conversation with his roommate he said he was going to be with God." Rozz Williams certainly was much more multi-faceted than other musicians and fans even knew, which made for a lot of genuine torment in the music, and a type of anguished singing voice that, as I mentioned, is heavily imitated even today.
Dark Slab of Ghoulish Mysticism with Driving Riffs - A MUST HAVE FOR ANY COLLECTION.......2007-01-26
Back in the early 80s, when this slow, grinding, disturbing set of tunes was first issued, it was considered shocking. (Shocking in a real way, in a way that Alice Cooper and Kiss only played at--making Black Sabbath look like the Brady Bunch!). Replete with themes of necrophilia, satanism, and graverobbing--no nightmare is left unturned--this dark masterpiece has a sinister feel to it that defies all pop sensibility and leaves only the seedy underbelly of LA left in its ruin...Lyrically, it borders somewhere between evil and unintentionally funny....but nevermind, this is a good buy as it includes the original gothic/darkwave (then called death-rock) magna opus "Only Theatre of Pain" in its entirety, along with the later remix EP (now out of print) entitled "Death Wish." Take my word for it....if you are new to gothic rock or just completing your collection, THIS is the place to start. (Don't waste your time with later efforts--Valor all but ruined this band with his narcisistic insipid lyricism)--this is the real deal! (BTW, if you're feeling experimental, be sure and snag CD's hard to find "Catastrophe Ballet"--the monumental follow up LP to this dark little treasure--it's very different but equally satisfying)
Fool me once..........2006-07-10
Amazon keeps recommending this to me because I like 45 Grave.
But, after wasting money on another album by this band, "Scriptures", I know better. Cool name, cool logo, lame music. I won't be fooled twice.
Not Just For the Shy/Skinny DR kids!.......2006-06-28
When I bought this on vinyl in 1984, you didn't have all the sub-genres you have now. You also didn't have easy access to new music (e.g. the internet). If you saw a used record that looked even remotely punk, you bought it. Especially if you saw it was on Frontier, and had Rikk Agnew from the Adolescents! Hence my introduction to Christian Death. What started off as a "fluke" purchase became one of my favorite records. While I could never get into the whole "goth" thing, I've always been a fan of this album. Nice to see that it is now "new & improved" with (6) bonus trax. The original vinyl only had the 1st (10) songs. Of the (6) bonus trax, I will comment on (4) of 'em:
1) Deathwish - Great Song! I swear I've heard it before, but don't remember it being on the original LP. Anyone know where it came from (the liner notes contain no details on the bonus trax, which is why I only gave this release 4 stars).
2) Romeo's Distress/Spiritual Cramp - Alternate versions of 2 of the best songs from the original LP.
3) Dogs - One of their best! Originally on the Hell Comes To Your House compilation (which I believe has also been reissued on CD).
While I still have an occassional urge to hear Catastrophe Ballet, this is the only LP they did with Rikk Agnew, so all subsequent releases lose their "punk" edge.
The Best DeathRock CD EVER!!!.......2005-07-14
The Cd of Only Theater of pain was the first Cd ever that got me to go to the darker side of music. When i heard thsi Cd it was awsome. Very meaninful and dark lyrics that Rozz Williams had made for this album. The other very beautiful CD is Ashes. He is the best most original rocker that i have seen. A from this point i have not heard a CD that can pass Rozz's masterpiece of Only Theater of Pain.

This album is still good, in spite of missing quality of sound a bit!.......2007-04-12
I would like to purchase the Japanese Edition, because I have the Brazilian (South-American Edition) and the Brazilian booklet is not beautiful as the Japanese. Detached tracks: "Angelique", "Loreleine", "Siren".
Despite the fact that T.O.T is the first band, whose genre is "The Beauty And Beast", the sound is not extremely amazing yet. It still misses something is related to this kind of music.
pure, brilliant, ethereal music!.......2006-10-30
what can i say?...brilliant, beautiful music!. one of the pioneers of the goth metal music scene in northern europe, theatre of tragedy (tot) reached the pinnacle of their career with the release of this album. those who expected a hardcore metal sound will be slightly dissapointed but for the majority of the listeners, i predict "aegis " will become one of the standout albums in their record collection. highlights includes the tracks "cassandra", "lorelei" & the stunning "siren" with only one track that could be called slightly dissapointing (bacchante)...
unlike in the earlier albums, raymond rohonyithe's growls can be heard no more. instead he gives a deliberately low key performance, more talking & whispering instead of growling & grunting, with the spotlight being given to the angelic voice of liv kristine. this album is also unusual in the sense that the lyrics are written in a kind of old english prose. some may find it a bit puzzling to begin with but with repeated listening, the lyrics will soon begin to make sense. ( well, most of them at least:) )
to listen to "aegis" is to listen to tot at their peak. unfortunately the band began to lose their musical bearings with their next albums as they tried to incorporate electronic club music into their releases. with the departure of liv kristine (who is now the lead singer of "leaves eyes" by the way) even tot will now be hard pressed to duplicate a successful musical creation, the kind which can be found in "aegis"...
Stunning!.......2006-09-13
This ablum is absolutely amazing. Liv Kristine has an amazing talent, her voice is flawless. There's not a weak song on this album, and my personal favourites are Siren and Angelique, but it was hard narrowing it down. I adore this ablum, it's a shame their new direction is not quite what I had hoped it would be. ToT is nothing without Liv; Nell does not compare at all. If you like self-titled and Velvet Darkness..., definitely get this album, it's perfect!
Aegis.......2006-09-04
Perhaps it is not necessary to write a review of this album since it has obviously received its fair share of praise, but for some reason I feel as though I should contribute. The music within this cd is perhaps the most beautiful, tragic and ultimately intoxicating thing I have ever heard... It's like listening to the sounds of a lost world, a world where everything was perfect and beautiful. But, you are listening to this through the eyes of a person who lives in a terrible world of chaos and hate, thus the entwined beauty and sadness. I do not find it necessary to outline each members' role in the band, since if you took even one of them away, the effect would be lost (truely a rare thing even in the metal scene). If there is a single complaint about the entire album, the only thing I can think of is that the snare drum is a hair too loud, but that may just be a matter of personal taste anyway. Buy this album. Let yourself be hypnotized by the beauty and sadness of the Theatre of Tragedy.
Beautiful!!.......2006-08-29
If you like your Goth metal with tons of texture and beautiful melodies this is a must have release.
The sound is just awesome and it truly is a wonderful listen!

Customer Reviews:
One of the funniest men no one knows about.......2007-01-12
When I was little my parents would play this Record, not CD or Tape an actual record and I would laugh by head off. When I saw it was available on CD I didn't hesitate to buy it. Emo's timing and story telling quality truly make him a comdedic genius. Even if you have never heard of him get this album and laugh like crazy.
Brilliant!.......2006-11-29
This is the single funniest stand up I have ever heard in my life.
I mean, tears were rolling down my face the first time I heard "Downtown Downer's Grove," it's just brilliant.
Its original, unique, super funny and the material hasn't aged a bit. I missed him in his prime (I'm currently 19 and bought this disc about a year ago), but I know he still performs, so hopefully I'll be able to catch him live sometime.
I should also mention that its pretty clean material too, nothing over PG on the whole thing, which is great, as I prefer my comedy clean.
Emo Philip's stuff is golden, its the kind of jokes that are made better by his performance, but would still be laugh out loud hilarious if you were to just read a transcript of his jokes. Being able to pull that off takes talent, way too many comedians rely on outrageous performances to enhance weak material (I'm looking at you, Dane Cook), but not Emo.
I can't understand why this guy isn't more famous, this stuff is classic.
Soiled pants........2006-08-09
I saw Emo at the top of his popularity in the late eighties doing the material on this album. It is probably one of the best routines ever created by man or Emo. The jokes and the goofy nerdy persona were in perfect alignment. If only I had been the type to wet my pants when laughing too hard.
Emo Emo Emo!.......2004-12-18
Even if you haven't heard of Emo Philips, please do yourself and Emo a favor and purchase this album. It contains two amazing performances and some of his greatest material to date. His style of comedy is not dated like some of the "comic greats" such as George Carlin (why he's up there and he isn't is one of nature's great mysteries), nor is it inappropriate or immature. One of the greatest comedy albums of all time.
Emo is one of the best.......2003-06-21
I saw Emo on TV when I was a teenager - 15 years ago - and I haven't been able to get his bit out of my mind since. Emo is a odd-ball comic with some of the funniest/strangest material you'll ever run into. If your ready for something different, E=Mo2 will satisfy your jonesing for a good-time, laugh-out comic.
