5 out of 5 stars A genuine awakening.......2002-02-25

I can see why Par Lindh Project has always rubbed pop-oriented reviewers the wrong way. Everything about this group is so honestly ýprogý, yet creative that I knew I would enjoy the cd before I heard it. Their songs are organ-dominated, and theyýre not afraid to approach complex classical pieces. We ýuseta get quality rock like this before we became mired in guitar trash like Dream Theater ('member, hah? 'Member??). Avoiding the contemporary clichés, PLP is not afraid to include a fabulous operatic-style female vocalist in the lineup, and the group shows the rare ability to create a fabulous 27-minute progstravaganza that is entirely engrossing. Listeners who never developed the ability to appreciate mature rock (groups like ELP) will surely loose their short attention span and fall asleep (or pick up a magazine) halfway through. But this music paints a picture ý watch it like a film, thereýs some exciting, moving and honest music here. Youýll find no pop-like catchy tunes, nothing to sing in the shower, just a well-engineered and memorable experience. These guys are batting 1000 in my book: 5 out of 5 stars!

1 out of 5 stars Wake Me When It's Over.......2001-08-28

Par Lindh Project has always rubbed me the wrong way. Everything but everything about this group is so blatantly derivative, so prefab-retro and so deliberately designed for a 'prog' audience that they half-lost me walking in the door. They're on Crimsonic (how cute!); their initials spell PLP (wow, that takes me back!); the songs are organ-dominated rock swipes of various classical-music staples (like they all useta be in the 70s - 'member, hah? 'Member??); and so on. As a sop to contemporary cliches, they include the now-obligatory Eastern-European operatic-style female vocalist in the lineup, and this album (their third, I believe) further conforms to prototype by dropping in the inevitable and wholly unnecessary 27-minute progstravaganza that lands with a horrific thud. (Actually, I'm not sure if it's only 27 minutes - it seems to go on for days.) I've owned this album for close to 3 years, and I still can't get through it without falling asleep or picking up a book or magazine halfway through while simultaneously muting the volume (hey, I'm trying to READ here, okay?). I think you get the idea: it's boring. How boring? PBS pledge-drive boring. Plus it's so custom-engineered to appeal to the Typical Prog Fan that I'm actually insulted by the damn thing (as if we all emerged from identical ELP-worshipping cookie cutters). Still, I could forgive em all this (and more) if there were some exciting or moving or honest music here, but MUNDUS INCOMPERTUS commits the unforgivable sin of being utterly forgettable, even as you're listening to it. No sooner does a track end than I can't recall ten seconds' worth of it. This isn't to knock the assembled players' playing ability - they're all little Yngwies on their respective instruments, have no fear. But twenty unscheduled naps in twenty spins is not the way you wanna bat .1000 in my league.

5 out of 5 stars Par Lindh's masterpiece.......2001-02-26

The first album by this group with permanent members. Gothic Impressions is a true 'project'. With permanent members, Par Lindh got the opportunity to explore and experience with his totally direction. This album only has 3 songs that are outstanding! The disc opens with Baroque Impression no. 1 where we can listen to the heavily Emerson influenced here and there. Track no. 2 is Crimson Shield, an almost ballad song with beautiful voice from the female vocalist. The last, title track, Mundus Incompertus last for almost half an hour to give us eternal satisfaction! You can listen to Par Lindh wizardous keyboard playing. Ok, you can say that he is almost sound like Keith Emerson and Rick Wakeman. But this album is something you won't forget. Only one thing that bothers me: the drummer. He sounds like a-just-graduate-drummer-who-wants-to-hit-everything-whenever-possible. It's really disturbing the way he played and it really ruin my mood. Overall, it's an album you must have.
