Their fifth album, Get Behind Me Satan is the strangest and least focused effort by these unlikely garage rock superstars to date. It's also their finest, an Exile on Main Street-ish mish-mash where the sum is greater than the parts. In a market increasingly driven by singles and downloads, it's nice to be reminded how exciting an album can be, especially one where you really don't know what to expect next. There are a lot fewer pounding guitars on this album. They've largely been replaced by pounding pianos. Most songs sound like rough mixes at first; almost every song has something exceptionally loud in the mix--the guitar solo in "The Nurse," the drums in "Doorbell," everything in "Blue Orchid." After a few listens, however, it becomes clear that the group is not using the studio as an instrument so much as exposing the nuts and bolts in the process along the way. There are some duds; the wanky blooze-rawk number "Instinct Blues" goes on way too long and it would be nice if "The Nurse" had a real chorus. Whether "Passive Manipulation" is about the wife-or-sister schtick, if the cover artwork indeed has Jack and Meg calling each other devils, and which scripture is referred to by the album's title (Matthew, Mark or Luke?): none of that matters so much as the fact that this album is strangely sprawling and obliquely ass-kicking at the same time. "Orchid" is a rockdisko sonic smash that shows how to really get rock kids on the dancefloor. Meanwhile, "Doorbell" sounds enough like the Jackson Five to totally rule, and "Forever for Her" is the best ballad Jack's written in years. The fact that some marimbas provide the driving force to "Forever" makes it all the better. --Mike McGonigal

An Unparalleled Modern Masterpiece.......2007-06-27
Not as good as their other albums.......2007-06-27
Progressive yet the least focused.......2007-06-21
The album starts out promisingly enough with "Blue Orchid" with Jack's octave-affected guitar doing a catchy riff and singing something about orchids and how old someone is. I don't know but it's a great opening track. Next is the totally weird the Nurse which is led by a dulcimer and it's just an odd track, not necessarily bad just...odd. We do have other songs like My Doorbell or the Denial Twist which are big piano-based numbers and while catchy, you kind of miss the guitars for some reason.
The rest are separated into 2 types of songs. First half is the acoustic/piano stuff like Forever For Her (Is Over For Me) and White Moon with the former being one of his better ballads while the latter has a nice piano part yet it suffers from not really having a sense of melody to latch onto outside of the piano. Take, Take, Take which is a more upbeat acoustic song is alright but the chorus is just irritating. Afterwards we get what's probably this album's We're Going to be Friends with a weirdly upbeat As Ugly as I Am which is actually quite fun to play as well as listen to.
The other type is the big blues rock numbers akin to Ball and Biscuit from Elephant. Problem is outside of the main riff, Instinct Blues just feels way too long and is kind of uninteresting to listen. Red Rain is way better which shifts from soft slide guitar to big loud slide chords a la Seven Nation Army. The album ends with the soft piano I Get Lonely (But I Ain't That Lonely Yet). It seems like an appropriate closer given the material on here and it's a nice song to listen to but you probably won't have it on repeat much.
You got to give them credit for at least trying to shake things up a bit. But like one reviewer mentioned once, it feels like they're trying to artificially change their sound rather than letting feel like a natural progression. If on first listen it doesn't appeal, try again. It's an album you can get, not get or get but still thinks it's an underwhelming album anyways.
Jack may have lost the plot..........2007-04-21
Myself and many of my friends are fans of the previous White Stripes records. We have been for a very long time. Not one of the people I know mentions this album without an apocryphal tone of voice, and most just out-and-out hate it. The regular conversation is something to the effect of "Yeah, I gave it a chance, I listened to it over and over, thinking 'maybe it'll grow on me', but I just started to really dislike it." If you haven't bought it, just hold out for the next one, 'cause there's no way it'll be worse than this.
(and for all the folks who are "personally offended" by my judgement of this record - Jack doesn't need your defense. He'll be just fine whether I liked it or not.)
Interesting.......2007-03-27

Amazon.com's Best of 2000
The foursome come roaring out of the blocks with their latest collection. The album's first single, "Beautiful Day," raced to the No. 1 slot on the U.K. singles charts and received a similar rapturous reception stateside. From its shimmering preamble to its sweeping, infectious chorus, it perfectly stakes out the middle ground between the anthemic U2 of the '80s and the more grounded group of the '90s. With Daniel Lanois and Brian Eno sharing production chores again after having taken a break with Pop, the U2 team enters the new millennium with their lineup--and mission--intact. --Steven StolderAmazon.com essential recording
If U2 hadn't used the title already, "A Sort of Homecoming" might have suited this, their 10th studio album. All That You Can't Leave Behind sounds, at various points, like any or all of U2's previous albums, as if the band is sending postcards back from a protracted ramble through previously conquered territories. The euphoric opening track, "Beautiful Day," reintroduces Edge's signature delay-laden guitar, which has been pretty much absent since The Unforgettable Fire. Elsewhere, the gospel stylings of Rattle and Hum resurface on "Stuck in a Moment," and the deranged, Prodigy-influenced dance textures that characterized 1997's Pop crop up on "Elevation." None of which suggest that this commendably restless bunch is running out of ideas. Having spent the '90s making three of the most bizarre and adventurous albums ever delivered by a stadium-rock band (the consecutive masterpieces Achtung Baby, Zooropa, and Pop), it's as if they're now trying to figure out what is the one particular thing they've always done best. Based on the evidence presented here, their forte remains a facility for making the epic statement alongside Bono's increasing lyrical intimacy: "Walk On" and "Peace on Earth" are two of the best things he's ever written or sung. All That You Can't Leave Behind confirms that U2's laurels are still making them itch. --Andrew MuellerCustomer Reviews:

Released before 9/11....Really?.......2006-12-06
-As some reviewers have noted "Walk On" has become an anthem to rising above the ashes and carrying on in the face adversity.
-"Beautiful Day" is a tribute to wonderful day that is laid out before us.
-"New York" is an ode to a city that is collectively stronger than anyone thought possible.
-Lastly, "Peace on Earth" has got to be one of the most fore-telling songs in the past twenty years. "They're reading names out over the radio/All the folks the rest of us won't get to know/Sean and Julia, Gaerth, Ann and Breda/Their lives are bigger than any big idea." It's scary, but I think U2 kind of knew where we, as a society were headed.
It's been a point of discussion between my wife and I, becuase she insists that there is no way these songs could have been written before 9/11. But they were and it makes it all the more remarkable.

Between the recording and the release of this album, the devastation of Katrina transformed the Subdudes' native New Orleans. So perhaps this could have been titled Before the Flood, with the band's musical equivalent of Crescent City comfort food reminding us of better times (and providing hope for better times to come). The band's sonic signature combines the soulful vocals of Tommy Malone, the call-and-response harmonies of his bandmates, and the spare accordion accompaniment of John Magnie. As produced by bluesman Keb' Mo', the band's second album since its reunion renders the rhythm section almost subliminal, thus spotlighting the buoyant melodies and the vocal dynamics more than the groove. Among the highlights here, "Papa Dukie and the Mud People" celebrates the commotion that results when a hippie tribe pitches riverside camp in small-town Louisiana, "Looking at You" features a funky duet with Rosie Ledet, and "One Word" lifts the spirit like a secular hymn, with Malone's buttery tenor sounding like a bayou Michael McDonald. The gorgeous balladry of "Time for the Sun to Rise" and the closing redemption of "Prayer of Love" provide the sort of transcendental healing that music can offer the most musical of American cities. --Don McLeeseCustomer Reviews:

Riding high on the phenomenal success of A Rush of Blood to the Head, Coldplay is in peak form on Coldplay Live 2003. This CD/DVD two-pack was filmed (on Super-16mm film) and recorded in Sydney's Horden Pavilion on July 21 and 22, 2003, during an exhaustive year-long world tour, and the medium-sized arena provides a fitting stage for the London-based rock quartet, not so grand as to overwhelm the music, but large enough to indicate their large and loyal following, which includes enthusiastic fans of either gender. Especially when played in DTS 5.1 surround, this 90-minute concert is richer, thicker, and (of course) louder than Coldplay's studio recordings, lending a wall-of-sound expansiveness to the band's signature sound, which draws from such diverse influences as Genesis, Pink Floyd, The Verve, U2, and their own unique sonic landscape. "Politik" gets the gig off to a rousing start, and other impressive! highlights include "Daylight," "Yellow," the as-yet-unreleased new song "Moses," and the popular hits "In My Place," "Clocks," and "The Scientist." And while the concert visuals are slick and professional (perhaps placing a bit too much emphasis on singer/frontman Chris Martin), this DVD and CD--the latter containing a truncated 70-minute version of the same performance--are best appreciated for their pristine audio quality. Culled from 400 hours of home video, the 40-minute "concert diary" represents a wasted opportunity, enjoyable for hardcore fans but offering no insight into the band or its individual members. Much better, then, to play the concert at healthy high volume, and appreciate Coldplay in the prime of their young career. --Jeff ShannonDescription
The two-disc set includes a 90-minute, nine-camera, super 16 live shoot taken from their July 21 and 22, 2003 performances at the Horden Pavilion in Sydney, Australia, as well as band commentary, a never before broadcast behind-the-scenes documentary, a special tour diary and the edited audio CD. The DVD and CD will also include two PREVIOUSLY UNRELEASED live tracks- "The One I Love" and "Moses."Customer Reviews:

Quite good concert but sloppy editing.......2006-05-03
The show combines some tracks from first release Parachutes to 2nd release A Rush of Blood to the Head, as well as 3 non-album tracks. There's of course crowd favorites such as Trouble(with a huge end sing along), the Scientist, Clocks, Don't Panic, Yellow with a beautifully sung intro to album tracks such as Amsterdam, Daylight and Shiver. As for the 3 non-album tracks, I love 2: The One I Love, a big rocker with a catchy ending("sing it to me, oh oh") and See You Soon, a beautiful/melancholy acoustic ballad.
The editing problems are first evident in the Politik intro. While the track itself has that pounding beat, so does the editing and it's incredibly jarring. It reminds me of an old guy trying to get in the mindset of a young person by acting and talking fast so the hyperactive camera is a result of a "this is what the kids want" mentality. Like most DVD's, the lead singer Chris Martin tends to get the most attention. A talent yes but other band members get very quick shots before going back to Chris. At one point I almost thought I saw band member to Chris to band member to Chris rather than switching between the 4 of them.
It would've been nicer if they waited till X&Y came out so we can get Square One, Speed of Sound and Fix You live but that's alright. Knowing the record company, we'll get another one soon.

On Music for Two, banjo wizard Béla Fleck and stand-up bass maestro Edgar Meyer effortlessly sail through a challenging program that includes compositions by Bach, a sonata by Henry Eccles, a Miles Davis tune, and a number of self-composed finger twisters. The amazing thing about this varied selection is not its eclecticism--which is only to be expected with these two--but that it all blends together so seamlessly. Fleck's jazz-tinged compositions (like "The Lake Effect") and Meyer's bluegrass-inspired tunes (like "Wishful Thinking") sit so comfortably next to Bach's baroque jewels and Davis's cool jazz that it makes you question the entire of concept of musical classification. (In fact, the Bach preludes, inventions, and partitas translate so well to the banjo/bass arrangements, you have to wonder if old JSB might not have had a bit of bluegrass in his soul.) Music for Two was recorded live at a series of 2001 concerts, where Fleck and Meyer proved conclusively that the banjo and the bass were capable of remarkable subtlety and not just twang and boom. --Michael John SimmonsCustomer Reviews:

Michael Cretu, the man behind Enigma, formulates an intriguing symbiosis between New Age musicality, classical and world-music influences, and dance-club rhythms. Gregorian chants, Native American meditations, and the breathy musings of a French chanteuse have been incorporated into legendary dance-floor hits from his previous three albums. The leitmotif of his fourth album, The Screen Behind the Mirror, is the grandly ominous "O Fortuna" from Carl Orff's Carmina Burana. "O Fortuna" opens the set and appears repeatedly throughout the tracks, sometimes lurking in the background, sometimes storming into the forefront. This album marks Enigma's continued foray into the ambient New Age realm, as Cretu's efforts focus more and more on melding compatible styles of world music, while the tracks are mixed into a single continuum. There's a lot to chew on; bits and pieces of church bells, Middle Eastern singing, and native instrumentation from you-name-it fold into each other on a steady current of shuffling hip-hop rhythms and velvety synthesized melodies. Cretu lends vocals to several songs, and his voice stands somewhere between Peter Gabriel and Phil Collins (though it's not as good as either), tending to distract from the album's flow and mood, lending it more of a prog-rock feel at times that he probably intended. Albums like this continue to invoke the same question: Is this a beautiful, transcendent union of artificial and indigenous sounds or is it just a bunch of self-indulgent schlock? It can be answered either way with equal conviction. --Beth MassaAmazon.com

The Heart is the Engine of Enigma.......2007-05-17
Being the fourth album from the legendary musical mastermind Michael Cretu, it was also at the time the most different (now his fifth album voyageur stands out as the most individual). I consider this album and Le Roi Est Mort, Vive Le Roi to be his (Michael Cretu) best album. The amazon editorial review said it all. Of the two questions posed at the end of her review, i must say that Enigma's music is a beautiful union between artificial and indigenous sound. This album is beautiful. Tracks that stand out the most are "Between Mind and Heart" "Modern Crusaders" "Gravity of Love" and the second track, which i forgot the name of. Buy this album!

Disney music is an artform . There are many classic tunes in the Disney music archieves. This collection of 50 songs on two disks offers a few chestnuts and too many repeats.
I have nothing bad to say about Hilary Duff, Cheetan Girl or High School Musical music. I just wish Disney records would have selected suh minor songs and tunes as Kirk Douglas singing "A Whale of a Tale", or Tim Curry version of Davy Crockett (from Disney's Music from the Park) to be paired with the Fess Parker's Crockett version on this collection. I wished some more rare demos (like Sean Connery singing from Darby O'Gill and the Little People), B-sides (like instead of the classic "You got a friend in me" from the soundtrack, use another version) or people like Louie Prima singing Mary Poppins tunes
On the whole, the music of this cd is build in for a younger audience. I can only wish Disney Records would release a larger more fullfilling classic like their out of print audio collection of the Legecy of Music.
It is hit or miss if you want to buy it

Clapton's Mid-80's Comeback Album.......2006-05-09
The musical climate had changed dramatically from when he had topped the charts in the '70's, and his two new 80's albums ("Money and Cigarettes" and "Another Ticket") made nary a whimper. So to help give him some direction, Clapton enlisted the help of Phil Collins, who could do no wrong at the time on the music charts. So that's why this album is so heavy on the slick 80's production and Phil Collins drum sound. Let's face it, back when this was released, the slick 80's sound wasn't a bad thing!
The painfully obvious thing about this album is that it is indeed a transition album, showing an artist trying to acclimate to a new sound. One half of the album is very pop sounding ("She's Waiting," "Forever Man," "Never Make You Cry"), while the other half is still in '70's mode ("Knock on Wood," "Same Old Blues," "Something's Happening"). It never quite works and seems somewhat awkward at times. Yet when he shines, she shines brightly. "Forever Man" and "She's Waiting" proved to be the biggest hits off the album, showing that Clapton was still relevant in the 80's.
My favorite track is actually one of the sleeper songs on the album, a beautiful little tune called "Never Make You Cry." It's easy to dismiss as sticky-sweet fluff, but there's just something about it that puts it up there with "Wonderful Tonight." Not in the same league, but definitely up there.
a good album and not "purist"!.......2006-02-25
One of Claptons Best.......2005-11-19
At this time he is moving into a new direction.
This is his first album with Nathan East and Greg Phillinganes.
Nathan East has been with Eric Clapton ever since.
On this CD you have the hit song Forever Man which also had a video that had alot of playing time on MTV at the time.
Other songs of note are She's Waiting , Same Old Blues, Tangled in Love and a cover of the song Knock on Wood. Just like a Prisoner is haunting and has a killer guitar solo as well.
Phil Collins also works with Clapton on this CD and adds drums as well.
This is a must for any Clapton fan and a great album.
I would recommend this to anyone

"America's sweethearts," Rolling Stone once dubbed the Go-Go's, and it was certainly as true as it could've been in any post-'50s milieu. The surf-tinged New Wavers sold more than 2 million copies of their 1981 debut, Beauty and the Beat, while carrying on backstage in the grand manner of rock stars with much "dirtier" images. Thus the Behind the Music episode that occasions this 17-cut overview. Highlights of the L.A. quintet's three albums fill the disc, though "Forget That Day," the Talk Show track that precipitated jill-of-all-trades Jane Wiedlin's departure from the group, is intriguingly absent. Whether double-edgedly celebrating romance and the ties of band life (the ringing "Our Lips Are Sealed"), wickedly satirizing post-teen female concerns ("Girl of 100 Lists"), or affectionately saluting their pop-culture forebears ("Beatnik Beach"), the Go-Go's were one of the era's most pounding and poignant pop outfits. This CD recalls them as they deserve to be remembered: lovingly. --Rickey WrightCustomer Reviews:

One of the best compilations of Go-Go's music.......2006-02-11
This CD has what I think are the absolute best songs by the Go-Go's. My favorite song is "Can't Stop The World". I used to have the tape with this song on it, and I wore it out.
Whenever I listen to the Go-Go's, it brings back great memories...and it's always fun to dance and sing to the music! I highly recommend this CD to any die hard Go-Go's fan!
Some excellent choices...........2005-03-06
The song selections are pretty darned good for a "Best of" compilation. A whopping SEVEN SONGS are included from the band's best-selling debut, "Beauty and the Beat." That's smart marketing, since most fans hold that album in such high estimation. "Every song on the album is great," some might say. Here, we get not only "Our Lips are Sealed" and "We Got the Beat," but also fan favorites like "This Town," "Fading Fast," and "Can't Stop the World." Overlooked and ommitted: Jane Weidlin's brilliant "Automatic."
Four songs are included from "Vacation," including the popular title track. "Beatnik Beach" could've been ommitted without a tear from this reviewer, but I'm pleased to see two of my favorite "Vaction" deep tracks included - "Get Up and Go" and "Girl of 100 Lists." VH-1 earns kudos and big bonus points for including on this collection a very rare Go-Go's track, "Speeding," which was previously only available on the "Fast Times at Ridgemont High" soundtrack. (But couldn't they also have somehow included "Rush Hour" from Weidlin's first solo album?)
Five tracks from the band's third album - "Talk Show" - round out this compilation, including the two radio releases "Head Over Heels" and "Turn to You." The former may rank as arguably the band's best overall track - bubbly, upbeat, involuntarily danceable, and fun, just like the band itself.
Return to a time when Charlotte Caffey was a heroin addict, Belinda Carlisle was heavier-yet-somehow-cuter, Gina Shock had to COUNT THE BEAT ALOUD while playing drums, and Weidlin and Caffey were demanding more than their 1/5th of the profits because they "wrote most of the material." Fondly recall the girls' individual affairs with Rob Lowe and their general affinity for nudity, sex, masturbation, and (mostly) harmless party drugs. Ah, the 80s!
Punk-Pop Pioneer Grrrls.......2005-02-13
This album, a result of the Go-Go's revealing "Behind the Music" episode on VH-1, gives the casual fan the perfect dose of all of their popular hits like "Vacation" and "We Got The Beat." It also introduces fans like myself to songs that casual fans were unaware of like "Lust To Love" and "Speeding." Songs like "Beatnik Beach" and "This Town" show the heavy influence of surf music on this punky panel of ladies.
To be honest, when these ladies cut loose on their edgier, punk-influenced tracks, they sound a lot better. Don't get me wrong, "Our Lips Are Sealed" sounds great, but the Go-Go's were always better with rock-tinged tunes.
Long before posers like Avril Lavigne blew onto the scene and the Spice Girls sang the praises of "Girl Power," the Go-Go's were setting the pace for future lady acts to come. There music may not be monumental, but it is definitely some of the most important work out there.
Highly recommended.
