At its best, The Carnivorous Lunar Activities of Lupine Howl goes some way to answering the question of what might have happened had Massive Attack ever produced Lee Hazlewood. Bristol, England-based Lupine Howl take a few basic--even hackneyed--American forms and attitudes and dress them up, almost beyond recognition, in contemporary British sensibilities. Though Lupine Howl are only a duo--Sean Cook and Mike Mooney, formerly members of Spiritualized--they seemingly play more instruments between them than most orchestras and, more importantly, are capable of arrangements sufficiently inventive to accommodate them. In particular, "Sniff the Glue" sounds like the track Primal Scream spent all of Give out But Don't Give Up trying to make, "Carnival" is superior Zeppelin-via-Stone Roses rock & roll, and "Lonely Roads" wanders off the reservation altogether--a road song that evokes Joy Division and Radiohead but which mostly sounds like it could be the beginnings of something remarkable in its own right. --Andrew Mueller

5 out of 5 stars Possibly one of the Greatest bands ever...........2005-10-28

Okay...this album is not news to you or me,..but I gotta just say,...This is an amazing album...it combines an array of styles, woven together with such ease and skill, that it seems almost impossible. The dreamy, spaced out sleaze of songs like "Lonely Roads' evoke something like the Velvet Underground making music for porn in the future. The booty shake of sixties bongo madness on songs like 'Vaporizer' and 'Sometimes' are perfect up beat moments when placed like drops of acid amogst the other, ...more desperate and degenerate tracks like 'This Condition' , which could be THE anthem for all spaced out boys triumphing over depression and loves lost. There is a touch of western soundtracks melding with humming ,buzzing effects rolling over guitars and more guitars...organs and horns rattle through pounding drums ...all lost in a storm of harmonics ...The goth overtones scatter this record like vampires from mars...and it truly makes so much of todays populaur alternative music obsolete. True revolutions in music happen in the dark,...and then slowly rise to cult fanaticism. This band, ..Lupine Howl....are that band. They are more muture and innovative then bands like the Warlocks and BRMC.(and I am a huge fan of both those bands.)...and not to knock Jason Pierce, but in the way that he needed Spacemen 3 to get him to Spiritualized...These two guys needed Spritualized to get them to they're own pinnacle....VIVA LUPINE HOWL!

4 out of 5 stars Lupine Howl-'The Carnivorous Lunar Activities Of..'(Beggars).......2005-01-22

Lupine Howl is made up of three former members of Spiritualized, guitarist Mike Mooney,bassist/vocalist Sean Cook and drummer Damon Reece.'..Carnivorous...' combines trippy psychedelic, krautrock and white soul,of which in this case is a good thing.Notice that bassist Sean Cook's vocals do sound similar to that of Jason Pierce's.Tunes I was most impressed with would be "Sniff The Glue",the somewhat bluesy "125","Sometimes"(the CD's second longest track)and "The Jam That Ate Itself".Gets better with each play.Might appeal to some fans of My Bloody Valentine,Spiritualized,The Strokes and Wire.

4 out of 5 stars Stellar Melodies.......2003-08-06

They say that imitation is the best form of flattery, but sometimes placing your own spin on a style/sound can actually create something more creative and unique. Lupine Howl jumps on Spritualized's earlier spacey albums, eg, Laser Guided Melodies, and adds twists of funk, rock, and psychadelia. Perhaps this is the path Spiritualized would've taken if they didn't go up the symphonic epic and gospel choir route. Lupine Howl still retains alot of the essence of early Spiritualized, yet has more diversity and scope. Spiritualized is about travelling through space; Lupine Howl also takes a similar route, yet changes it's musical course at every planetary stop.

5 out of 5 stars WOW IS RIGHT !.......2002-10-28

The reviewer who said that this is "Primal Scream meets Spiritualized" is exactly right. This is almost as good as Primal Scream's latest "Evil Heat" and a lot better than the latest Spiritualized release "Let It Come Down".
"The Carniverous Adventures Of Lupine Howl" is a standout CD. It's pure electronic rock at it's best and these guys were lucky that they were dumped by Spiritualized and their never ending parade of musicians, because this one blows away the new Spiritualized CD big time.
Right from the first few bars of "Vaporizer" you know you've found something special. "Sniff The Glue" & "125" are flawless too. Then you are hit with the ten minute plus "Carnival" (which is best when heard through headphones)and this song has to completely [change] your mind. How could anyone not love it? Everyone I've played it for has, and in fact I think that they all went out and bought this CD.
There's not a bad cut or even a bad track on this great work. All nine songs showcase this extremely talented duo very nicely. If they can top this, they'll really earn my respect and undying musical devotion forever. I've ordered their latest CD from Amazon.com and check the mail each day waiting for it.
Now I want to know when they're coming on tour to Los Angeles, because I'll be right there at the front of the crowd.
I strongly urge everyone to buy this CD. There's no way you won't love it.
