More than four decades after its Broadway debut, the Roundabout Theatre's 2007 revival of 110 in the Shade is a glorious showcase for soprano Audra McDonald, and an eloquent statement for an underrated and neglected work. Based on N. Richard Nash's play The Rainmaker, 110 in the Shade tells the story of a Texas town stuck in a blistering heat wave. Lizzie (McDonald), the daughter of a local widower (Broadway veteran and TV star John Cullum), has resisted all suitors, including the sheriff (Christopher Innvar), until a potential huckster named Starbuck (Steve Kazee) arrives in town promising to bring rain ("The Rain Song"). Just like Marian the librarian, Lizzie thinks she sees right through the scam ("You're Not Fooling Me"). McDonald shines in her solos ("Love, Don't Turn Away," "Old Maid"), but Cullum, Innvar, and Kazee also get their moments either in duets with McDonald ("A Man and a Woman," "Simple Little Things," "Is It Really Me?") or by themselves. 110 in the Shade is obscure compared to Tom Jones and Harvey Schmidt's most famous work, The Fantasticks--none of its songs ever entered the popular culture like "Try to Remember"--but it's a beautiful, evocative score that is tailor-made for McDonald's rich voice. It's also much more sumptuous than The Fantasticks, even in Jonathan Tunick's pared-down, Tony-nominated orchestrations. (Also nominated were McDonald, Cullum, lighting designer Christopher Akerlind, and the show itself for Best Revival of a Musical.) P.S. Classics puts out its usual first-rate package, with color photos, introduction by Peter Filichia, synopsis, and libretto. --David HoriuchiCustomer Reviews:

Procol who?.......2007-04-27
It starts off with the classic song "A Whiter Shade of Pale" which sounds like church with all the organs played beautifully by Matthew Fisher. And those lyrics, simply majestic, Keith Reid ( who wrote all of Procol's material ) is one of the finest lyricist of all time. His words are pure poetry.
After the majestic "A Whiter Shade of Pale" we dive into the rest of the album which is also incredibly good and not just filler as some people tend to think. "Conquistador" is probably the second best track behind the opener. I also love the bass on that song. "She Wandered Through the Garden Fence" is alot of fun to listen to with lyrics that are really catchy. "Something Following Me" is more serious in tone but the lyrics once again are incredible as is the arrangement. "Mabel" is definetly a nod to Bob Dylan, "Cerdes ( Outside the Gates ) is probably the darkest song on the album but still magnificent. "A Christmas Camel" has a tone very similiar to Bob Dylan's "Ballad of a Thin Man". If there were any throwaways on this album it would be the next three "Kaleidoscope", "Salad Days", and "Good Captain Clack" but none of these songs are terrible and still manage to be listenable. The album closes on the instrumental "Repent Walpurgis" which is eerie but magnificent.
But that's not all. You also get 4 bonus songs which include two okay ones ( Limestreet Blues and Monseigneur Armand ) and two fantastic ones ( Homburg and Seem To Have The Blues All The Time.) The latter of the two includes my favorite lyric of the album "Well I owed a lot of money/I was weak and easily led/I tried to rob a bank/ The cashier shot me dead".
You may have not heard of this album, this group, or even the title song but if you like classic rock or just good music in general. Give this band a try. They might suprise you.

Kiss' "Hot in the Shade".......2007-01-23
Things fall apart immediately with "Rise To It" slide guitar intro (think Cinderella's "Fallin' Apart at the Seams"). Next is a Gene throwaway,"Betrayed" that goes absolutely nowhere. "Hide Your Heart" is interesting because Ace Frehley released his veriosn the very same year on his "Trouble Walkin'" CD. And between the two, I find I prefer Ace's version. Most fans are familiar with "Forever," the tune co-written by Michael Bolton. It became one of Kiss' highest charting singles, and got them quite a bit of airplay. Taken outside the context of this album, it was no better or worse than any of the other ballads being released as the music scene edged into the 1990's.
After a few listens, I couldn't help but notice how many riffs or ideas were lifted from other bands. The biggest offender is the sad "Pour Some Sugar On Me" rip-off, "Read My Body." It may be the worst song Kiss ever recorded. From its Casio keyboard inspired drum intro, to Paul Stanley's attempt at copying Joe Elliot, it's a disaster. "Prisoner Of Love"? "Love's A Slap In The Face" "Silver Spoon"? "King of Hearts"? All pretty darn bland and unlistenable. The only song I find even remotely enjoyable is "You Love Me To Hate You." It actually has a great chorus that builds and shows the slight spark of creativity. Also interesting to note is that Eric Singer, Kevin Valentine, and a drum machine (most noticable on "The Street Giveth...") were used on several songs instead of Eric Carr.
And then there's "Cadillac Dreams." I'm not sure if Gene was lampooning himself when he sings, "Money, money, that what I want..." but it sadly has become his calling card over the years.

A good but not great album for KISS.......2006-02-05
Just by listening to this album, you know that KISS's heart was in the right place. The band sounds like they really want to redeem themselves after a decade of following trends and a half-decade of coasting on cruise control (although they did have many memorable albums). The production is top-notch and the band gives a tight, focused execution of the songs. So "Hot in the Shade" should have been a glorious return to form, right? So what's the problem? Unfortunately, with all that KISS had going for them, the album is just a little better than average. Not bad, not mediocre, but not great either. "Hot in the Shade" is a slightly better than average 80s rock album.
There are some great songs to be found, like the hard-rocking "Rise to it," "Betrayed," "Hide Your Heart," "Little Caesar," (to which the late Eric Carr lends his vocal talent) and "Boomerang." So when the band sounds good, they sound very good and accomplish what they set out to do. But one major flaw of the album is that it is overly long. There are just too many songs. And while most of them are effective, they are just kind of average. Apart from the aforementioned highlights, most of the other songs sound like by-the-numbers late 80s pop-metal. They sound more-or-less like Motley Crue or Skid Row leftovers or B-side material.
The album's (and one of KISS's) biggest hit is the power-balled "Forever," which is hand's down, the absolute WORST song the band ever recorded. Co-written by Michael Bolton, this cringe inducing generic balled is a stain and an embarrassment on the legacy of what is otherwise one of the best bands of all-time. What Watergate was to Nixon, "Forever" is to KISS.
Outside songwriters also hurt the quality of the material. Much of the album was co-written by outsiders, thus hindering what could have been great songs. People like Desmond Child gave the band unwarranted advice in what they thought would sound good. Despite what any egg-head music critic from Rolling Stone will tell you, Stanley and Simmons are great songwriters, they didn't need help from outsiders to tell them what the songs should sound like. If the band had just followed their heart and written songs that they knew were good, "Hot in the Shade" would have been the comeback that KISS had wanted it to be. Instead crappy top-40 whores like Michael Bolton and Desmond Child were brought in which no doubt weakened the material. While the album's highlights were co-written by outsiders, Stanley and Simmons still put enough muscle in them to make them work.
"Hot in the Shade" was a step in the right direction. But too much filler, outside writers, and the awful "Forever," unfortunately kept KISS from making the album that they could have made. While "Hot in the Shade" isn't KISS's weakest album (that honor goes to "Unmasked") it isn't their strongest offering either.
It should be noted that "Hot in the Shade" was sadly drummer Eric Carr's last album with the group as he lost his battle to cancer two years later.

Vitalic.......2006-12-28
Done with tasteful restraint and intelligence, like in the case of it's primary anthem piece "Darko", unfolding before your ears with a measured self-assured pace from textbook IDM beeping into a dark, brooding, rich, textured epic crescendo while retaining the main theme throughout, playing with it and adapting it bit by bit like a musical queer eye for the straight guy. More pop than trance, more epic than house, more inspired than IDM, "Movements" stands on it's own.

A musical treasure-box.......2006-09-10
The First, Second, Third and Fourth Bookes of Songes, A Musicall Banquet, the keyboard transcriptions, all the lute music, consort music are here and virtually everything else written or supposedly written by John Dowland. Anthony Rooley and The Consort of Musicke perform this music with style and feeling throughout. This 12 CD set is something of a monument to the ensemble - I only wish they'd finished their collection of Monteverdi madrigals, which was equally good (La Venexiana are currently doing a magnificent job of recording all Monteverdi's books of madrigals for the GLOSSA label).
This is an expensive set, however, you will probably never need to buy another John Dowland CD again after buying and listening to this collection.
I bought this CD set on a mild Summer evening of 1998 and listened to it while sitting in my sun room - which a glorious orange sunset in progress, and a glass of wine. It brought back so many memories.
a beautiful journey into melancholy.......2001-06-15
Dowland, a contemporary of Shakespeare, discovered that meditating on a sad theme is, at the same time, a way of discovering a special beauty that we tend to avoid (maybe because of the "tragic" heritage of the Romantics). So, in the end, meditating on sadness is an uplifting experience! This box set is a journey into melancholy that includes songs, chamber music, pieces for lute, some rare sacred music and -as a highlight- Dowland's beautiful collection of seven pieces for viola which he called "Lachrimae" (Tears).

Album Description
This album was originally released in June 1975 as a precursor to the Stones' 1975 American tour. It covers the choice cut from the bands first four albums of the seventies -- Sticky Fingers, Exile On Main St., Goats Head Soup and It's Only Rock 'N' Roll. It has only been available briefly on CD in the mid Eighties and is long sought after by collectors. EMI. 2005.Customer Reviews:
Could've been so much more..........2007-04-26
Now, these nothing-but-the-basics comps can work quite well when done right, which generally implies them covering a longer timespan than the four years Shade touches on. Take Hot Rocks - that one gets a decade of the basics perfectly. So does the recent Forty Licks, for that matter. However, this fails because there's too little.
The cover's, um... interesting. Could be a potshot at David Bowie's Ziggy Stardust days, or just the Stones being the Stones.
An excellent compilation.......2006-11-04
Shady Deal.......2006-08-11
Now for the rant. Previous reviewers have mentioned this in a softer tone. These remastered disks have no oomph or extra anything. The Stones have repackaged everything to death to wring one last dime out of their fans. I wish that when they undertook the last remastering that they at least gave us liner notes. The thought of a couple of live cuts or rarities from the time of each album is much too much to expect. Rhino Records work with re-release and remastering is the benchmark- great liner notes, disks stuffed with extras. Heck, even the notoriously money grubbing Who put a few extras on their countless re-releases.
I know we will never get this with the Stones and I knew what I was getting with Made in the Shade, and sadly I got nothing more. So... It is a great disk with a great line-up of songs from a great time in the bands career. Find it cheap, it's worth it!

If You're Looking to Catch Your Breath.......2007-01-23
...and the newest Brookville release keeps this trend alive.
Ivy has always been masterful at capturing various moods, (especially those of the pensive, sun-setting on the horizon, stay indoors and read in bed type) and Life in the Shade spins a reflective and ambient tale from start to finish.
Highlights include the subtle horn-driven "Golden" and "Nothing's Meant to Last" in which he enlists some help from his wife and Ivy's lead singer Dominique Durand.
But the album in its entirety is comprised of flavourful arrangements and some of the best song-writing this side of Ben Lee which makes it one of 2006 best new releases.
Classy melodic pop for discerning ears.......2006-09-03
Life In The Shade shows progress in almost every way. The songwriting is consistently good (except for the final two tracks, which never took for me). The production is better -- there were spots in Wonderfully Nothing that I thought were a little threadbare, and could use some sweetening. On Life In The Shade, Brookville knows when to add lushness and complexity, and they know when to lay back and let simplicity reign.
Most importantly, they know how to add drama and tension. So many bands I hear start out a song and continue at the same volume with the same instrumentation, grinding away without relief for four or five minutes. Brookville songs ebb and flow, build up and release, with a sense of intelligence -- a sense that the producers and mixers know how to communicate feeling to the listener with sonic variety, instead of monotony.
If you haven't heard Brookvillle, the following references might give you an idea of their sound. Andy Chase, the lead vocalist and chief songwriter, sounds perhaps like Art Garfunkel with a little less breathiness, a little more body. The songs have melodies and conventional rhythms. The lyrics are evocative, but not too concrete. A variety of acoustic and electric guitars and keyboards flesh out these tracks, and repeated listenings will reveal small embellishments, tricky little parts inserted here or there at a reduced level in the mix, adding texture and balance. Styles range from pop-rock to bossa nova. Most of the songs are mid-tempo, and the songs can be a little sad. Nothing edgy here, at least in the indie sense. For me, that's a good thing. Gone are the experimental electronic instrumentals which made up half of the first album.
This is a classy record. In a world of pop music that has moved increasingly toward simplicity, beat, and vulgarity, Brookville follows the course of restraint, melody, subtlety, and a little sentimentality. Probably a major label would have absolutely no use for this. So give Andy Chase credit. He started his own independent label, he co-owns a studio with Ivy bandmate Adam Schlesinger, and he can release whatever he deems worthwhile. The catalog number here is Unfiltered Records UNF-009. Other Unfiltered releases include the fantastic first EP and first two full length albums from Ivy. Let's hope for more quality from this little label, to entertain us as the four multinational music conglomerates concentrate on the lowest common denominator. Brookville certainly entertains, Life In The Shade is worthy of repeated listens, and honestly these guys should be producing other major musical acts. If I ruled the world, they would be.

Elegant pop with a lot of soul in it.......2006-07-24
This is some very elegant music. It's got a seventies feel to it that traps you from the very first track. If you like smooth, classy pop, you should have a listen and then buy this record.

The Stuff I Did While This Album Played.......2006-05-23
But here's the thing: Mancini was a pianist. He composed his music on piano - which benefits it a lot. The tonal and dynamic range of his best stuff comes from the versatility of the piano as an instrument, for sure.
The concept behind this album was to showcase his touch and virtuosity on piano. And it does. But, in the early 1970s, this type of music was not appreciated by many.
However, my friends and I used it a lot to establish a mood. And it was our close, close friend and ally, I can tell you for certain.

While the sales of Sarah Brightman's ambitious, Middle Eastern-themed 2003 album Harem may have fallen short of its predecessor, the veteran UK chanteuse's popularity as a live performer has only mushroomed. This live recording of her ambitious, sold-out Harem World Tour engagement at Las Vegas' MGM Grand Arena is testament to that appeal, begging the question: Will Brightman become the Grateful Dead of classical crossover? Indeed, abetted by the rich sonic textures of longtime producer/collaborator Frank Peterson, the worldbeat conceits of her recent studio recordings are folded into a larger, even more expansive live vision here. Brightman's overt dramatic instincts and oft-chaemeleonic vocal abilities drive a slate of material that stretches from the Arabian Nights/Madame Butterflypastiche of Harem's seductive "It's A Beautiful Day" through surprisingly effective classical/rock reinventions of Kansas' "Dust in the Wind" andSarah Brightman Photos

Inspiring, Beautiful and The Sweetest Voice!.......2005-08-21
We, the fans of this great artist finelly have in our hands a live album, and it's amazing:
-The voice is totaly live, she sang about 24 complete songs in the show, but the album only contains 15.
-Snow In The Sahara is a lovely song.
If you have the chase of get this alubum, don't doubt and get it; It wond disapoint you!
astounding performance.......2005-06-07
However, experiencing this epic and intensely mystical concert compelled me to realize the individual and unique glory of Sarah Brightman. Also, this concert is so phenomenally entertaining at many levels that I couldn't help but fall absolutely in love with the special magic of Sarah Brightman. Obviously, the expansive Middle Eastern milieu can accommodate more than one angelic vocalist!
I now consider Lisa Gerrard and Sarah Brightman to be geniuses who both warrant goddess status in the pantheon of lyrical greats. To see either one of them perform live is surely one of the most powerful and memorable sensory experiences one could ever have!
Great, of course.......2005-03-18
