Fresh Cream, the album that introduced this seminal super-blues trio to America, was perhaps a bit too blues-based to do the advance hype ("Clapton is God!") justice. Two of its three best-known tracks, after all, were blues covers. It was Disraeli Gears that turned Cream into a "supergroup." Here they pursue the psychedelic ideals of the era with total abandon (the LP cover art still stands as one of the 1960s' most striking designs), merging these ideals with their take on the blues and adorning the amalgamation with some superb pop craftsmanship. Of the eleven originals here, four--"Tales of Brave Ulysses," "SWLABR," "Strange Brew," and "Sunshine of Your Love"--earned major airplay. This, their excess-free greatest moment, does the Cream legend proud. --Bill HoldshipCustomer Reviews:
In Depth review of notable tracks.......2007-06-12
Strange Brew is the first track on the album. This combines pop with the blues. The guitar riff is from a Little Walter song "Everythings Gonna Be Alright." This song was the first one to be recorded for the album, but it was gonna be a cover of a Junior Wells tune "Hey Lawdy Mama." But their manager wanted to be on the London radio show Top of the Pops so Felix Papaladi (producer) wrote the lyrics for a pop song. Clapton let this go cause he was able to play a blues solo.
Sunshine of Your Love is probably the most recognizable riff in all classic rock music. Written after an all night session, Pete Brown saw the sun come up... "It's getting near dawn..." Jack Bruce took his double bass and came up with that jazzy riff that just pulls your ears in like magnets. During the recording sessions, the engineer Tom Dowd suggested Ginger Baker to play an Indian like drum pattern like in the old western movies. The sound just pulls everything together and Ginger is still able to show off and break up the beat to make it his own.
Tales of Brave Ulysses is a combination of music composed by Clapton and lyrics by an artist named Martian Sharp who designed the cover. It's also the introduction to the Wah Wah pedal which sounds so clean and fitting to the song. SWLABR stands for she walks like a bearded rainbow. This songs about a man defacing a picture of his x girlfriend because of the break up.
We're Going Wrong is about an argument Jack had with his wife. The sounds build steadily like their trying to reach somewhere but not quite reaching the peak. Jacks voice is at its best.
Outside Woman Blues is a great cover of a Blind Joe Reynolds song which is great for an electric guitar. Clapton was great at giving old blues tunes new life.
Take It Back is an anti Vietnam song about a draftee ripping up the draft card. Overall this is Creams best record, combining great inventive sounds.

Cream's Masterpiece.......2006-03-18
Disraeli Gears saw the trio growing as the musicans. The songwiritng has improved a lot since Fresh Cream and the songs sound a lot more sophisticated and inspired. Unlike on the band's debut, most of the songs are originals written by band's members and there are only two covers to be found (Outside Woman Blues, Mother's Lament)
The album opens with Strange Brew, straight-up blues with a recognizable guitar lick. A good opener. Sunshine Of Your Love, arguably Cream's biggest hit, follows next. This classic opens with a fierce guitar riff and features a legendary guitar solo. Every band member shines on this number. But even if it's the major hit, it's far from being the only one great song on here. World Of Pain and Dance The Night Away deliver some colorful psychedelia, and Blue Condition is a nice relaxing blues track. The giant Tales Of Brave Ulysess follows next. This track features a superb guitar riff and some psychodelic poetry written by Martin Sharp. The use of wah-wah is a great addition. Definately an inspired and amazing track, one of my personal favourites. SWLABR (She Walks Like A Bearded Rainbow), an intense rocker, never fails to please. Catchy lyrics and guitar riff will get stuck in your head once You hear it. Outside Woman Blues delivers some more classic blues playing. Take It Back follows similar stylings, and some harmonica is to be found here as well. The closing Mother's Lament is more a joke song, and though most reviewers seem to dislike it, I think it's a nice closer. Cream is not only about being seriously, and they show it on this track.
Disraeli Gears is not only Cream's finest record, it's also one of the major classics of the 60s. It is as influental as Jimi Hendrix's "Are You Experienced", The Doors' debut album or The Beatles' "Sergeant Pepper's lonely Hearts Club Band". If You call Yourself a classic rock fan, this is a must have. And If You want to get into Cream, this is the best place to start. Highly Recommended.

Warning this album is addictive I find my self singing, "Sunshine of Your Love" a little too loud at work and then I hear others completing the words from other cubes.

Cream's breakthrough sophomore LP is where blues rock, psychedelia, and pop all came crashing together. The result was one of the commercial touchstones of late `60s rock. And, while it hasn't aged as well as many other benchmarks of the era (owing arguably to the strong and competing wills of the band's trio of virtuosos, Eric Clapton, Ginger Baker, and Jack Bruce, this double-disc deluxe reissue captures one of rock's trailblazing supergroups in all its excessive glory. On the first disc, the 11 tracks that made up the original record (highlighted by the hits "Sunshine of Your Love," "Strange Brew," "SWLABR," and "Tales of Brave Ulysses") are fleshed out with two outtakes and five demos. Disc Two repeats the entire album and the two demos in mono, and tacks on nine-track performances culled from three 1967 and '68 BBC sessions. --Steven StolderCustomer Reviews:

OK, to the album. This is one of the many Deluxe Editions being released by Polydor and Universal Chronicles. What do you get? The entire album in stereo and mono, out-takes, demos, and BBC recordings. For a fan who wants that first Cream album, get this edition. Or you can go for the single album, which is much more affordable. If you have the "Those Were The Days" box set and the "BBC Sessions", you really don't need this edition. The only thing "new" you will get is the mono album and "Blue Condition" in D(as opposed to in C on the record) with Eric on vocal. But if you are an obbessed fan like me(and some other reviewers...ha ha!!), you'll go out and buy it(like I did!!). The mono sides are interesting, as I am not familiar with too many mono albums.
Like I said before, if you are a new or casual fan(or an obbessed one!), go out and buy this album. It will be worth every penny you spend on it. Then be prepared to get the Reunion CD when it eventually comes out(hopefully), since they are doing 4 shows at the Royal Albert Hall in May.
The Cream of Cream in Deluxe form.......2005-02-10
The only song on this album that I (and many others) don't really care for is We're Going Wrong, but otherwise, every track shows you how creative Baker, Bruce, and Clapton really were. The first two songs obviously opened up the album to many of it's listeners before they listened to the album. "World of Pain" and "Dance The Night Away" are great examples of what music at the time was becoming. Ginger Baker's "Blue Condition" is a great follow-up to the previous two songs as it's waltzy beat pulls you in. "Tales of Brave Ulysses" introduced most to wah-wah, and "SWABLR" has to be the most psychedelic song on the album. "Outside Woman Blues" should've been retitled "Clapton." Of all of his songs before the 70s, this is the best foretaste of things to come. "Take It Back" is a great statement to conclude the album before the goon humor of "Mother's Lament" leads it out. Overall, the album is wonderful.
As for the deluxe packaging, well... it's better for me that the album is in stereo and mono, but there's only two tracks on the entire package that had not been previously issued, and those are "Blue Condition" with Clapton taking vocal, and one of the "Lawdy Mama" versions. The demos could already be found on the Cream box set (which has even more demos from the sessions), and the BBC recordings were issued before on Cream's BBC CD. It's still good with me, though, as this was my first Cream purchase anyways.
This is an essential album. You could buy this package or get the plain album for a more than reasonable price. Whatever your bag is. Just get it.

Eric Clapton and Cream at their Power Trio Best!.......2005-08-19
Clapton seems to really excel here and his influences can be clearly heard from B.B. King to the great Albert King riffs in the first track, EC plays homage to all his guitar idols in imitating their playing styles in these tunes.
Why 4 stars? Well, for a remastered disc and especially one from Japan of which I expect even more, I thought the sound quality was okay but not great although I really liked the mini-lp sleeve. Also, the sound seemed a little soft to me for the first track but the levels thankfully improved as it got to "Sunshine of Your Love", the album's tour de force.
As a guitarist, I would have liked to have heard more of EC and his solos but this album overall is rather short at a little below 40 minutes long. Otherwise, a good album especially for aspiring blues guitarists; the EC vibrato is next to B.B. King, probably the best there is. Peace!
Cream's masterpiece... Clapton would never top this.......2004-12-18
In 1966, after leaving John Mayall's Bluesbreakers, Eric Clapton formed Cream with bassist Jack Bruce and percussionist Ginger Baker. The trio released their debut album, Fresh Cream, in 1966. Unfortunately, the debut left a lot to be desired. Many of the songs were good, but many were subpar, and many of them were covers as well (including the best-known songs on the album!) The band followed it up with their sophomore effort - 1967's Disraeli Gears (the story of how they came up with that title is a bit lengthy and awkward, and I'm not going to get into it here.) Read on for my review of this album.
1967 was a great year, as far as classic rock albums go. Jimi Hendrix, The Doors, and The Velvet Underground all released their debuts, and the Beatles released their wildly popular Sgt. Pepper LP. With Disraeli Gears, Cream created their own 1967 "classic for the ages." The band's sound undergoes a radical shift from blues-based rock to a psychedelic heavy sound. Two of their biggest hits, Strange Brew and Sunshine Of Your Love, can be found on this album. The former is, by far, my favorite Cream song. But, as with any album by any band, the underrated masterpieces are one of the true attractions. A great example of this is the masterpiece of a track known as Tales Of Brave Ulysses. Unfortunately, as far as single releases go, it was a B-Side, so it tends to go overlooked. Blue Condition is a Ginger Baker contribution to this album, and it's a damn fine one. Every track on this album is great, with the lone exception of the "joke" song at the end, Mother's Lament (why'd they put this on there?), making this one of the finest psychedelic rock albums of all time. Nothing Eric Clapton would record after this would top this - although some of his later releases came close.
Disraeli Gears finally got deluxe album treatment in September of 2004. Unfortunately, unlike other reissues in this series, this one is very subpar. Much like the deluxe Velvet Underground And Nico reissue, this one has one stereo version disc and one mono disc, with a few bonus tracks. And any Cream die-hard has pretty much all of these bonus tracks already. What the record company SHOULD have done is reissued Fresh Cream and Disraeli Gears together on a SINGLE disc. If you're gonna do these deluxe reissues, do them right! The Who reissues in this series are a beautiful example of how these things SHOULD be done. Take my advice - just get the old single disc version of the album. (The reason I didn't take any stars off of my total rating for the album is because I can't give an album this good anything less than five stars.)
There's really not a whole lot more that I can say. If you're a fan of psychedelic hard rock from the sixties, or an Eric Clapton fan, or maybe you're a little bit of each, I highly recommend this album. No classic rock collection is complete witout this masterpiece!

When Cream came screaming across the music scene.......2006-06-13
"Sunshine of Your Love," "Tales Of Brave Ulysses" and "We're Going Wrong" are perhaps the best known tracks on a stellar album, though "World of Pain" and "Dance the Night Away" may best represent the prevailing vibe of the time.
Though he did not write much of the material and what he did write tended to be eccentric, Ginger Baker clearly powered this trio with his amazing time signatures and ability to match Bruce or Clapton's inventiveness. Jack Bruce seemed to be in his element here: solid, clean bass lines and gutty vocals. Eric Clapton was on a mission back then, and his inspired work throughout this recording lives up to any hype.
If you only buy one Cream recording (excluding the artifical anthologies and best of's), I think this is the one to have for it is more mature than "Fresh Cream" and largely lacks the excesses that marred parts of "Wheels of Fire." The weaker tracks, such as Blue Condition, have not improved with age, however.

Eric Clapton on this CD becomes the legand he is known for now.
Cream were three musicians who were innovative and talented.
The songs of note on this CD are. Strange Brew, Dance the Night away, SWABLR, Sunshine of your Love, which is their signature song to this day and always be.
The Wah Wah on tales of Brave Ulysses shows the master doing a song that even rivals the late Jimi Hendrix.
Outside Woman blues is another song that holds up to this day.
If you like Cream or if you want to listen to Cream for the first time this is the CD you need to listen to first.
This is worthy of any collection, Cream or otherwise
