4 out of 5 stars CHECK OUT THIS UNDISCOVERED GEM FROM THE SEVENTIES!.......2006-03-09

Yep, it's the resurrection of BUBBLE PUPPY under a new name: Rod Prince had come from Corpus Christi's legendary Bad Seeds, linked up with bassist Roy Cox, second guitarist Todd Potter and drummer Clayton Pulley (replaced with David Fore by the time the GATHERING OF PROMISES album was recorded). Their amalgam of rock, blues, folk and country was late Sixties/early Seventies perfection, and will immediately transport you to a more musically adventurous time. They released their lone International Artists LP and three subsequent singles, but IA was going down in flames at the time, so their fate was sealed. Had they been on a larger, better distributed label they might have been able to build on their big hit into a solid career, but it was not to be. After the demise of IA they were brought to ABC/Dunhill by Steppenwolf's Nick St. Nicholas, a very big fan, and made an almost completely new LP of outstanding songs ("Todd's Tune" gets a rework here) under the new moniker of DEMIAN. Once again, the fates were against them because Dunhill did not promote the album well (they were too busy with the Mamas and the Papas, Steppenwolf and Three Dog Night) did not play up the former Bubble Puppy angle enough to let people know who these guys were, and this great followup LP sank into obscurity. Too bad. If you are into Nuggets or Seventies Blues/Rock, go for this: enjoy a shining moment. Check out the DEMIAN LP, reissued in 1994 on the German TRC label. It's hard to find (but of course you managed to find it here, so score ten extra points!), but well worth the trouble. Great stuff, guys.

5 out of 5 stars Unforgettable band!.......2004-12-26

This band was great and chiefly original. Windy city , Only a loner are legendary recordings and since Face the crowd was the most commercial theme , it' s incredible how it still sounds so fresh thirty two years after .
Style and personality were two special seals of this ensemble.
Please acquire this item and get close to one of the most interesting and creative bands of the seventies .

5 out of 5 stars ONE OF THE BEST.......2001-01-10

THIS IS ONE OF THE ALL TIME BEST ROCK ALBUMS (CD'S) EVER. IT WAS RECORDED LIVE IN A STUDIO AND SHOWS THE TRUE TALENT OF THE MUSICIANS. IF YOU LIKE 2 GUITARS, BASS, AND DRUMS AND NO GIMMICKS TO REWORK THE SOUND, THIS IS THE ONE. WAITED FOR YEARS FOR A SECOND ALBUM THAT NEVER CAME BUT 4 FRIENDS AND I HAVE THE ALBUM AND LITERALLY WORE THE GROOVES OFF. WHEN WE FLASH BACK TO THE EARLY SEVENTIES IN COLLEGE, WE INEVITABLY TALK ABOUT DEMIAN. I JUST GOT THE CD (BEEN WAITING FOR THIS) AND IT WILL NOT COME OUT OF THE PLAYER FOR WEEKS. BUY THIS CD!!!!!

3 out of 5 stars the son of bubble puppy.......2000-10-27

this is bubble puppy under another name. the album's not as good as bubble puppy , but the version of todd's tune is, i think, considerably better. face the crowd is a zeppelinesque gem, love people is a decent mellow number, and windy city is a good cut with some fine socially conscious lyrics. it is a better produced recording than a gathering of promises, but the songs just aren't as memorable. fans of bubble puppy, "zeppelin- type rock: and steppenwolf (nick st. nicholas produced this album) will probably enjoy this album.

5 out of 5 stars Cool sound.......1999-09-05

I wore out an eight track recording in the early seventies. Did not hear that Gibson sound again till Def Lepard came out. Thought it was Demian at first. Played a gig with a couple of them in Texas once when they...never mind.

    4 out of 5 stars Electro-Acoustic Improv. at it's finest.......2006-03-24

"Demian as Posthuman" is saxophonist Steve Lehman's most experimental release to date. With a solid acoustic quintet record, "Artificial Light," and trio release, "Interface," under his belt, Lehman is also one third of the collaborative trio Fieldwork, whose "Simulated Progress" is easily one of 2005's best jazz releases. Lehman has upped the ante on this album, which dispenses with typical notions of jazz and popular music by combining the two in an effort to document the creation of a new, hybrid music.

Combining electronics and jazz is certainly nothing new, but truly successful projects are not the norm. For those jazz artists who see electronica and hip-hop as conceptual equals however, the results are generally more satisfying. Lehman is obviously a fan of popular music and as such his investigations into that realm are more solid and affecting than those artists who merely dabble to benefit from the marketplace.

Lehman put together a quintet in the summer of 2005 to record some abstract groove pieces. With pianist Vijay Iyer, bassist Meshell Ndegocello, DJ Jahi Lake and drummer Eric McPherson, Lehman recorded three tracks, "Vapors," Logic - Meshell" and "Community." These three cuts became the structural framework around which Lehman decided to construct his next record. With noted hip-hop producer, Scotty Hard and drummer Tyshawn Sorey, Lehman utilized overdubbing and studio technology to document a music that occupies a middle ground between the lands of jazz improvisation and the rhythms and timbres of hip-hop and electronica.

As expected, the three quintet tracks sound the most filled out. With an obvious nod to his M-Base schooling courtesy of frequent collaborator Vijay Iyer, Lehman takes these three pieces down familiar, yet invigorating territory. Each embodies the sort of lock-step funk groove and cool harmonic progression M-Base is known for while maintaining enough polyrhythmic edge and angularity to keep the tunes surprising. Lehman shows his chops, but these pieces are more collaborative in nature than mere solo opportunities for the leader.

It is the remaining tracks where Lehman overdubs himself and Tyshawn Sorey to build compositions that flirt with the ambience and raw groove of contemporary music. Multiple variations of the same themes emerge giving the album a suite like flow. Deceptively full for a duo, Lehman uses a sequencer to fill in bass lines and overdubs himself to create a virtual two horn front line. These cuts tend to have a futuristic cast to them, with wispy synth lines and droning pedal tones lurking beneath intertwining, angular alto sax lines and explosive drum fills. On "Damage Mobility - Acoustic" Lehman goes it alone, sort of. By overdubbing his saxophone without aid of a sampler he creates a mini-saxophone quartet. "Emphonic" is the most electronica inspired piece on the album as it finds Lehman alone with his sequencer and is the only instance on the record of a drum machine.

"Demian as Posthuman" sounds less like an experimental aside than it does an indication of exciting things to come. At 36 minutes, the album may seem short to discerning listeners, but still comes across as efficient and tight in its pacing.

            Album Description

"For the Sake of Love" is a tribute in song to the healing journey. Centered on personal and global healing with a Celtic feel to some music and Asian flavor to others, the songs range from a single ethereal voice and exquisite piano to full harmonies and orchestration, driving rhythms and percussive expression. The lyrics are inspiring and intimate, written from Demian's personal experience in overcoming childhood abuse.

"Keeping the Dream Alive" written for the Tiananmen Square Students and performed in front of the Chinese Embassy in Washington, D.C., as well as "Free Tibet" are on this CD.
