4 out of 5 stars More Hits Than You Might Remember.......2007-06-05

My wife got this for me because when he'd come on the radio I would say "Do you remember this one?". Anyway, I was surprised how many songs on there I knew once I listened to it.

5 out of 5 stars CHRIS CROSS GREATNESS .......2007-05-14

What an awesome CD. The vintage songs that made him a hit so long ago, and a few new ones thrown in make an excellent ballance. if you're into great lyrics, and the supreem vocals of Christopher Cross, this provides it all.

5 out of 5 stars Good collection.......2007-03-11

This is a good collection of hits. They are in a nice order to listen to. Really glad I ordered it.

5 out of 5 stars "Sailing"-Nostalgia at it's Best!!!!.......2007-03-09

It was 1979, I was up at a cottage on the lake north of Toronto and it was sunset when I first heard "Sailing". Now everytime I hear that song I'm taken back to golden sunsets on the lake and this beautiful song playing.

Other great songs are "Arthur's Theme", "I Take You Forever", a great duet that came out in 1988 and I have fond memories of, "Think of Laura", a melancoly tune but a song that just take you back to the early 80's like "Arthur's Theme" and a modest hit from 1987 called "Swept Away", great song. I also first heard this song on a "Growing Pains" episode and loved it.

I'm all about the ballads on this CD. To me Christopher Cross' music takes me back to a wonderful nostalgic time in my life, as I'm sure so many of us can relate. His music puts a smile on your face. I agree with another reviewers comments about his looks-okay so he doesn't look like Brad Pitt-So What! He seems like a down to earth guy just singing from his heart and I think his fans wouldn't have it any other way.

5 out of 5 stars A Terrific Compilation of Christopher Cross!.......2007-02-12

I don't know why Christopher Cross' career took a nosedive because he's still one of the greats of easy listening even now. I love the song, Swept Away, which has always been my favorite. Maybe it's because it was used in the Growing Pains Hawaiian episodes. I love Sailing, Come to My Window, and of course, Arthur's theme. People will realize that Christopher Cross' music is still relevant, soothing, deeply relaxing, and classic because it holds up even in today's standards. Yes, I know it's not the 1980s anymore but when you hear Chris' singing, you can still remember it. At least with today, the internet and the computer age has allowed us to gain easier access to it. I remember searching every music store for this song. I'm not one of those people who burn their music off the internet. I'm old fashioned. I would rather buy it and listen to it on cds in my car or at the gym. When I hear him, I feel a little relaxed about life in general.

5 out of 5 stars Christopher Cross' Best Album, Bar None........2007-03-14

This debut album by Christopher Cross is definately his very best work and a masterpiece. His albums that would follow, would never reach the status of this one, in quality and his best work. Every song on this album is great and actually, this album in itself, could be considered his greatest hits, in my opinion. I just love the sound of all of these songs and it brings back vivid memories of 1980, which for me was an exciting year, anyway. I'd definately recommend it to anyone that loves late 70's-early 80's soft rock.

5 out of 5 stars awesome cd.......2007-02-10

I remember listening to sailing as a kid and was favorite song back then. The only other CD that sounds similar to this that I've heard is "Reading Rainbow's greatist hits"... or at least some songs on there. Sad that, that CD is not on amazon as well. It's also a children's CD so the lyrics reflect it too.

5 out of 5 stars YES, I DUG THIS!!!!.......2007-02-02

hey, i like christpher cross' early stuff. i think this album is easy listening personified. i got it for SAILING myself, but i was surprised at how much i enjoyed the other songs on here besides the obvious ones that you hear on the light radio stations these days. i recommend this album to anyone looking for something to just relax and ease the mind to.

5 out of 5 stars Music is ultimately very personal.......2006-12-12

I know this album has been called everything under he sun. From great Pop to utter sappy trash. This review won't mean much to most people, but it goes to the heart of what music is about. First of all, I think this can be called a classic POP album. Aside from the songs everyone knows like "Sailing" and "Ride Like The Wind", the album contains very well written songs with great harmony like "Poor Shirley", "Spinning", and "Minstrel Gigilo". It also contains some pretty nice guitar playing by Chris, Larry Carlton, and Eric Johnson. All that being said, the album has a special place in my heart for its ability to simply take me back in time. It was the summer of my Freshman year of high school and this album was the hottest thing going. When I hear these songs, I literally feel 14 again. The summer nights driving my 10 speed to my girlfriends house on a beautiful summer night in (what was then) wonderful Colorado Springs, never thinking much past tomorrow. This album on a cassette walkman was with me everywhere. I hear these songs and get a little tickle deep down. For a few minutes or even a few seconds I am 14 again on that 10 speed. The feelings and images are still so vivid, for those few minutes I am back in that wonderful time that was oh too short. I moved away that fall and the innocence of that summer would be forever lost. But the music on this album will stay with me as a reminder of that point in time. It is a wonderful album, and as I said this is no doubt no help at all to anyone wanting to buy this CD. But it speaks to the power of great music, so if you are in your late 30's, give it a listen. Maybe it will spark some memories in you as well. It never gets far from my CD player, even though the memories it invokes get further from me every day.

5 out of 5 stars A Very Underated Album.......2006-12-21

"Another Page" was Christopher Cross' second album was released in 1983. The album was on the charts through 1984 and spawned three hits, all of which hit the top-40: "All Right" (#18 - 1983), "No Time For Talk" (#33 - 1983), "Think of Laura" (#9 - 1984). Despite this, the album only went gold, a stark contrast from his 5-grammy debut album, released three years earlier.

Contained within this album are a number of phenomenal musicians: Brian Wilson of the Beach Boys, Don Henley of the Eagles, Michael McDonald of the Doobie Brothers, not to mention Art Garfunkel, a duet with Karla Bonoff and three members from the group Toto: Jeff Porcaro, Steve Lukather, and Mike Porcaro. Michael Omartian, a kingpin in Contemporary Christian music, produced the album, as well as tinkling the ivories on a few numbers.

Of the hits, "Think of Laura" was made popular when the soap opera General Hospital used it when the character Laura died. In all actuality, it was written in memory of a friend of Christopher Cross' who died in a car accident.

The other two hits were definitely backed up by Toto (though I cannot prove this), which is one of my favorite groups. Toto did a lot of studio work prior to their debut in 1977. Even after their success of "Toto IV" (they were the major grammy winners the following year - 1982), they continued to do studio work, most notably being the back-up band for Michael Jackson's chart-topping "Thriller" album. If you're as familiar with their work as I am, Toto's style is impreccably recognizable - in fact, Steve Lukather is given credit for his guitar solo in "All Right."

I want to take some time to take about "No Time For Talk." This tune is one of the most incredibly, creatively written of any pop tune that I've listened to. The entire verse is built entirely on three notes. The intro, which contains those three notes repeats itself with the '80's big synth sound and an expanded bass line. When you listen to verse one, you probably won't catch the similarity. Then there's verse two, which is entirely different as the musicians use substitute chords to add variety. It all comes to a head in verse three when the synth returns and one realizes - "that was the intro" - how cool!

As if that's not enough, listen to the drums. I'm 99% sure that it's Jeff Porcaro - it's just too good. His playing sounds so simple, yet he's accenting at just the right places - it is purely amazing. Did I mention the instrumental - very complex chord changes. If anything, buy the album for this song. You definitely won't be disappointed.

Of the ten tunes on the album, seven are ballads. All of them have very memorable melodies and are beautifully orchestrated. Most notable are "Words of Wisdom," which has an amazing guitar solo done by the Cross himself, and "What Am I Supposed to Believe," a gorgeous duet with pop singer Karla Bonoff.

Most critics agree that "Another Page" contained some great material - so what went wrong? It's hard to say. Growing up in the 1980's, the big artists of 1983 were "Thriller" and Billy Joel's "An Innocent Man," both of which had six releases each. His music's not quite as progressive as theirs was, yet it certainly is more interesting than some of the stuff that came out that year. Could it have been MTV? History shows that it separated Peter Cetera from Chicago - perhaps he didn't fit the "rock" image. Another ballad artist that lost during this same time was Barry Manilow; yet, Elton John still retained his popularity well into the mid-1990's.

Who knows what went wrong. History does prove that despite his 1985 and 1988 releases, he never made it back into the top-40. If you've read this review and are thinking about purchasing some of his music, this album is worth the money spent. You won't be disappointed!

1 out of 5 stars A Classic.......2006-07-05

I love this album. I originally had it in cassette format but had to buy it again in CD format because it's so good and such a classic reflection of Christopher Cross' songwriting. He's got those pretty melodies he's known for, along with his distinctive voice, and some great backup vocalists too. Also, if you get a chance, see him in concert!!!

4 out of 5 stars Soft rock deluxe.......2006-03-03

I've been reading the reviews on this Christopher Cross release. This is largely a collection of ballads, with a few upbeat pop performances thrown in. I don't understand the criticisms of this being a ballad album. Why criticize the tempo of the music? Just give an opinion of this on the music for what is it, and not what it isn't.

I was also confused on the criticisms of "What Am I Supposed to Believe", a duet with Karla Bonoff. What is the sappiness that some of these reviewers are referring to - the lyrics? That song is the primary reason I bought this. It is, in my estimation, one of the best ballads Cross has EVER done. The soft piano and the matchup of the vocals made this one of the most enchanting songs I've heard. Lyrically speaking, haven't most of us had questions about a new relationship after having been disappointed in an old one? This should therefore be a song that audience can relate to. The piano and strings match the mood perfectly. So that's my two cents on that particular track.

"All Right" and "Think Of Laura" should be the two songs on here we recognize before getting the disc. The latter was a tribute to a departed friend that was played on a number of television soaps and informercials.

I agree with most of the favorable reviews of this. I am mostly a heavy metal listener, but for those more mellow moments, this serves well.

5 out of 5 stars fantastic ballads.......2005-09-20

You won't really find a more mellow pop music album out there. Virtually all the tracks are melodic ballads and are really mellow. This suits Cross's voice perfectly and the ballads have enough variety in each of them, not to cause repetition.
If you are after ballads, you will absolutely love this album.
All the tracks are excellent, but the best song is the heart wrenching 'think of laura'. Listen to this and it is bound to touch you, if you are a sensitive person. The melody and meaning behind this song are exceptional.
'Long world' is absolutely beautiful. Also highlights are the beautiful 'nature of the game' and 'takling in my sleep.'

All the songs are incredible. If you like Cross's sound, but are yet to hear this album, I guarantee you can't go far wrong.

Album Description

Customer Reviews:

4 out of 5 stars great mix of rockers & ballads.......2005-11-04

After winning (a then record) five grammys for his 1980 debut, Cross' popularity wained... (sniff). He had a few more hits from his second album in 1983. "Every Turn..." is not as strong an album in terms of consistency, but that is only because "Another Page" is nigh perfect.

Cross returns playing killer lead guitar solos on this album. His solo on the opening track is excellent and shows what a complete talent he is. His high tenor voice sounds strong as ever, and his writing remains top notch.

In my opinion (I am only a music fan who primarily looks for melody in music, which is mostly absent today) eight of the ten tracks on this album are great tunes. A couple songs are weak: track #3: "I Hear You Call" and track #7: "Swing Street." Seven of the ten songs are uptempo or midtempo rockers, while the remaining three are among his best ballads ever! Especially
"Love Found a Home."

At first I did not care for "Charm The Snake" but it grew on me because of the inspiring lyrics. I like this album as much as any of today's music (I grew up in the 1980's) so if you like melodic rock mixed with a few love ballads, this is a must listen. ( the Enuff Z'nuff album "?" is also a must!!)

5 out of 5 stars Simply awesome.......2006-07-25

He never fails to amaze me with his amazing gift for great music. This cd is among his best works even though his standard is so high. Some fans will give this cd 4 stars because he is so good its hard to be better than the best.

4 out of 5 stars Christopher Cross and his muse.......2004-03-11

Listening to Christopher Cross's music you find that he most likely was a Christine McVie fan. They both have good pop sense and hooks in their songs. So this CD is well worth getting to be able to hear them sing together in " Never Stop Believing". His lead vocal with her voice wrapped around it is just good pop music at its best.

4 out of 5 stars A Good Album, but not his best.......1999-12-14

Back Of My Mind has some wonderful tracks like "Someday", "Never Stop Believing", "Alibi", and "Swept Away", but it certainly is not Cross' best work. Still, I think it's great that amazon.com offers Chris' long out-of-print albums. Chances are you've never heard most of the songs that are on these albums, and it would be a shame for you to pass them up.

For his best work, I think you should try Rendezvous, or Every Turn of the World. Another Page and his self-titled album are perenial classics as well.

4 out of 5 stars Solid Cross Album.......1998-11-17

This CD is a treat for fans of the gentle speaking artist with a sweet voice of gold. "Swept Away" is a beautiful love song and "I Will (Take Forever)"; a duo, blends the vocals like only he can. The title track: "Back of my Mind" is classic Cross stuff.

Although a fine production, there's still a couple of cheesy tracks. After all, it wouldn't be Christopher Cross without them.

4 out of 5 stars Good New Material on Studio Album - Live Stuff Disappoints.......2004-09-11

Christopher Cross' career got off to an incredible start with his self-titled debut album. After that, he had a moderate follow-up with "Another Page", but it didn't match the success of his first album. Following that, Cross really struggled to have another major hit in the U.S. In 1998, Christopher Cross took somewhat of a risk by putting out the double CD "Walking in Avalon". The reason this was a risk was because he hadn't had commercial success for a long time, and now asking consumers to invest in a double CD might not be that enticing. Despite the risk, "Walking in Avalon" was a well promoted collection of two distinct discs. The first disc is the 'Walking on Avalon' studio album and the second disc is a live concert recorded in Santa Ana at the Galaxy Theatre in March, 1998. Since these are two distinct discs, let's look at each one individually.

The studio disc of "Walking in Avalon" isn't bad. I think some this might be some of the best work that Cross has done in a long time. He doesn't match the success for is his self-title debut album, but there is some solid work on this album. From a songwriting standpoint, this is solid material. There are 10 tracks on this disc, but the best tracks are the last four. Overall, the best track is a duet that Cross does with Gigi Worth on the 7th track called "I Know You Well". I don't think I would be out of line by saying this is the best song Cross has written and performed in over 10 years. I've always found that Cross has done his best works in duets. Whether its "Ride Like the Wind" and "I Really Don't Know Anymore" (with Michael McDonald from his self-titled debut album) , "Say You Won't Be Mine" (with Nicolette Larson also from his debut album), or "Open Up My Window" (with Gigi Worth from his "Window" album), Cross has been one of the best artists to have in a duet. This song is no exception as Cross and Worth perform a terrific tune about a love tug of war. Both Cross and Worth have some great chemistry together and hopefully will continue to do songs.

Also in the last group of 4 songs is the 8th track "Kind of I Love You". This is a quicker tempo song that is very catchy and is very enjoyable to listen to - especially the chorus. The 9th track is "Curled Around the World". This song is a ballad with Cross delivering some outstanding vocals on this track - some of the best he has had in years. The 10th track is a near instrumental (light vocal overtones) called "Rainy Day in Vancouver". The opening notes almost sound like "Dust in the Wind", but goes into a terrific new-age type instrumental.

Other songs worth noting are the opening song is "In a Red Room". This song took me a little bid to get into, but after a few listens I came to appreciate this song. The title song "Walking in Avalon" is also a solid track.

Some of the material on the second CD was released on a CD called "Christopher Cross: Greatest Hits Live". That particular release was actually a subset of what is contained on this collection. The biggest problem with "Greatest Hits Live" is they shuffled the order of the songs from the actual performance in Santa Ana. On that CD, there is a complete lack of continuity and it really affected listening to the music. The nice thing on "Walking in Avalon" is that the concert is delivered on the disc in the order in which it was sung in Santa Ana. While "Greatest Hits Live" struggled to show the connection with the audience, this disc will establish the connection with the audience very quickly. Cross even jokes at one point when he introduces the song "Open Up My Window" by saying 'all 12 of you that bought it" (referring to the fact that the album didn't sell very well). The songs included on the live disc do a nice job at traversing Cross' near 20 year career. I have high expectations for a live Christopher Cross performance. While Cross does a nice job on this performance, but he doesn't hit the "homerun" I would have expected from a Cross live performance.

Christopher Cross and Gigi Worth are once again a highlight as they deliver a live version of "Open Up My Window" which will steal the show. Also solid are "Every Turn of the World", "Sailing", "Alibi", "Deputy Dan", and "Rendezvous".

I had always wanted to hear a live version of one of my favorite Cross tunes - "Minstrel Gigolo". Cross delivers much more of an 'unplugged' acoustic version that is shorter than the studio version. This disappoints me somewhat because the acoustic version doesn't do the studio version justice. Also letting me down is the live version of "Ride Like the Wind". This song does include special guest vocalist Michael McDonald, but the duo doesn't capture the intensity of the original song. I would have also liked to have seen the duo peform "I Really Don't Know Anymore" as well. Another song that is a letdown is the live version of "Think of Laura".

The liner notes contain all of the lyrics and credits for the studio songs on this collection. The live tracks do not have the lyrics included. The cover has a beautiful design of Times Square blended with a pier. Despite some of the shortcomings with the live CD, this is still a solid collection. It definitely is some of the best new material Cross has done in years and the live disc is better than "Greatest Hits Live". I'd recommend getting this.

5 out of 5 stars Iam in audiophile heaven........2004-08-21

This cd is beyond perfection, its an audiophile dream come true, listening to this cd on my $16,000.00 stereo system(HDCD,DVD AUDIO,SACD,DTS,XRCD,DOLBY DIGITAL COMPATIBLE WITH MULTI-CHANNEL STEREO) brings tears to my eyes. How can such a humble artist produce such incredible music,i will forever be in a state of amazement.GREAT ARTIST,GREAT LYRICS,GREAT AUDIOPHILE MASTERING,GREAT ARRANGEMENT,GREAT SINGING...THIS IS POP PERFECTION.

5 out of 5 stars Have to hear to believe.......2002-11-20

This is absolutely the best display of intelligent, well-crated pop songs to come out in many moons by the most under-rated artist alive. You just have to hear it to believe it! My main purpose in writing this review is to let everyone know that there is a live video titled "An Evening With Christopher Cross" which is the VHS version of the live portion of this CD. What a deal!!

5 out of 5 stars Fantastic, well-crafted melodic pop! And on HDCD to boot!.......2001-12-09

This double CD is fantastic! The live disc is a sonic wonder and treat due to the wonderful technology known as HDCD (go to hdcd.com to read about it). HDCD is definitely 'the real deal', adding extra resolution, soundstage, and better dynamics to the music!!

The studio portion of 'Avalon', all new material, is just stellar, smooth easy listening pop music at its best. Cross is very very talented and at the top of his game with this very underrated release, and these compositions are pure ear-candy in sonic and compositional quality. Most pop music is merely fleeting in impression... this is one beautiful and memorable CD that just flows with hooks and lush melodies... and totally exhudes quality and emotion! One song in particular, titled "Curled Around The World", to me, is probably the BEST easy-listening pop song to come along in a long time! Listen to this one on a good system with an open mind, and it will grow on you very quickly, even if you don't consider yourself a fan of CC. 'Avalon' will change your mind! It did mine!

5 out of 5 stars What is wrong with this.......2001-03-24

Someone said to me you "HEAR music, you don't lISTEN" well with this CD you just HEAR the man. I have heard him for a long time & this is what CC is about. I just wish he would walk in the real Avalon & make it to the Glastonbury festival in Somerset U.K. before it's too late.

4 out of 5 stars CHECK OUT "THE DEFINITIVE CHRISTOPHER CROSS"!!!.......2002-01-03

This CD contains some of Cross' hits, but before purchasing this, all fans should first check out the digitally remastered "The Definitive Christopher Cross" available here. TDCC contains nineteen songs, seven of which were top hits and also includes "A Chance for Heaven" written for the '84 Olympics. I bought this CD recently and love it! If you are a Christopher Cross fan (and who isn't) this is the ultimate collection to date. It offers all the hits as well as a good sampling of lesser known material such as the wonderful "In The Blink of an Eye". For further info, check out my review on TDCC.

4 out of 5 stars Where is the American counterpart?.......2001-12-03

This release gets 4 stars simply because there has been no effort on the part of Warner Bros. to put together ANY kind of Christopher CRoss compilation! What is with these Neanderthals?! Even Leif Garrett has a compilation CD out, for God's sake...

That said, the most essential songs are here: "Sailing," "Ride Like The Wind," Arthur's Theme" and "All Right." But why include "Words Of Wisdom" (From Another Page) when it was never even released as a single? And why put "Love Is Love" on the collection but leave off "Never Be The Same," a top 10 hit single?

A definitive (HINT: 2 disc) compilation would include "Think Of Laura," "A Chance At Heaven" (recorded for the 1984 Olympics tribute album) and "The Best Christmas" (1990), as well as several worthwhile songs from his latest releases. Here's hoping this will happen during my lifetime! Until then, this release is well worth the extra cost of admission!

    4 out of 5 stars Good Set.......2001-09-04

I dug alot of Christopher Cross's early stuff.all the main hits are here."Ride like the wind" is a timeless song."sailing" still sounds fresh to me.He had alot of early hits&then things gotta went away but He has alot of solid songs that will hold up for many Decades to come.it's a Good Set.

4 out of 5 stars I've Got To Ride Like The Wind, To Be Free Again!.......2000-10-09

This German compilation from 1992, which I bought there two or three years ago, is just what a former reviewer called it: the best sounding and most useful Christopher Cross CD collection available today. My absolute favorite, naturally, is the title track "Ride Like The Wind". The other real good, and very underrated, I might add, tracks include "All Right", "Someday", "Love Is Love", "Any Old Time", "Charm The Snake", and "That Girl". As for the slower-paced ballads, which are all right-sounding as well, they are "Say You'll Be Mine", "Sailing" (This was Number One at one time, wasn't it?), and "Arthur's Theme (Best That You Can Do)", whose lyrics were a question on a recent "Who Wants To Be A Millionaire"! So, now, I'm glad I still have this CD, it being the first choice one should make for wanting to hear Mr. Cross's highly underrated material. But hey, after he won 5 Grammys in the early '80's, he just couldn't quite sustain that popularity for much longer, as he was featured on a "Where Are They Now?" news special not too long ago. As it's an import, it's higher in price, but still well worth it. By the way, Chris, what's with all the flamingos?

    3 out of 5 stars A CLASSIC........2000-03-01

SAILING, ARTHUR'S THEME and ALL RIGHT are classic radio tunes. Christopher Cross wrote most of the material on this. The entire LP sounds very dated. None of the tunes on this are updated or remixed . Quality of the CD is not THAT fantastic. (W/ref to the West.Gemary pressing) A couple of the hits are missing, LAURA'S THEME, NEVER BE THE SAME... just to name but a few. No lyrics included on this release. Just about the BEST Christopher Cross greatest hits release available on the market right now. Will have to do I guess.
