5 out of 5 stars this is a six stars.......2006-04-19

Well first than nothing let me say this to the guy who wrote in french and gives one star to this CD :first write in english even when it is not your first language (like me) you should buy a new pair of ears , because this CD is a solid master piece.

A friend recomended me this CD because C. ARMSTRONG was in the Massive Atack?s Protection, and i said thank like a hundred times for recomended me this CD , this work is one of those that have a universal feeling (except if you are this guy who wrote in french) i do not know anyone who have not enjoyed this CD!!! .

The feeling in this CD is already well said for the rest of the reviewers, but i am going to say this: It is a down tempo music full of strings , piano and ocassional beautiful voices (PAUL BUCHANAN from The Blue Nile and LIZ FRAISER from Cocteau Twins) with deep melancholic feeling this music will take you far far away to places where the hope lives at the end.

5 out of 5 stars Great.......2006-03-08

Very calm and soothing music. If you enjoy this you should also check out Piano Works.

1 out of 5 stars Inoffensive musique climatisée.......2005-09-07

4 out of 5 stars Touching.......2004-08-16

Craig Armstrong's music has the tendency to set your mind drift and to think vast cinematic thoughts. which is probably why he does so many film scores. this album contains some renditions of his movie music along with some other pieces. the mood here is somber and reflective with quiet tones and some downtempo electronics added for effect. the vocal contributers are excellent (esp. Elizabeth Fraser's vocals on "This Love"...which is the main reason why i bought this cd). one of the things i like about his music is that it comes close to being overtly emotional...but retains the distance so that the listener can sort of fill in the blanks. does that make sense?

4 out of 5 stars Moving music..........2004-04-25

Its great mood music... its not music I'd listen to whenever I'm driving, for example, but this is really dreamy, cinematic music with a contemporary sound. A great addition to my CD collection, I've never bought anything that sounded like this.

5 out of 5 stars Unbelievably wonderful alt-country/pop.......2006-07-09

Six months later I'm still having trouble coming to terms with just how very good Between Last Night & Us is. The Audreys - an Adelaide-based four-piece, (sometimes five) - have released a brilliant album, bound to feature prominently in 2006's Best Of lists. The lead-off track, `You & Steve McQueen', received regular airplay on Australian radio after appearing on a 2005 EP of the same name, and here it makes the perfect opening number, easily sounding like it's drifting in from somewhere on the edge of an Arizona desert, or Chapel Hill, North Carolina. In fact, if you were hearing this album with no foreknowledge, you'd be hard-pressed to believe that it was produced early last winter by the brilliant Shane O'Mara at his Yikesville Studio in Melbourne.

For comparison, the sounds of Canada's Be Good Tanyas might be a nice reference point, but the lovely Taasha Coates, plus Tristan Goodall, brother Cam Goodall, (recently departed to pursue a burgeoning solo career), and Mikey G, all add a much heftier dose of pop to their mix of alt.country and bluegrass. (Producer O'Mara also contributes guitar, lap-steel, dobro, bass and samples across the album) Stunning - repeat, STUNNING - standouts include the orgasmically-shuddery `Banjo & Violin', the previously mentioned 'Steve McQueen', `Nothing Wrong With Me' and `Come On In', which starts out pretty and delicate, before developing some serious muscle towards the end. They even manage to get away with a cover of the INXS tune, 'Don't Change', (on original pressings only).

The Audreys have been touring non-stop for almost a year now, and their live shows are simply devastating - make sure you catch them somewhere soon.

Building 429 hit the Christian music charts forcefully in 2004 with the Glory Defined EP and the subsequent Space In Between Us full-length release. And unless you lived in a cave, you no doubt heard "Glory Defined" a million times on radio as the arena rock style of the band left its strong first impression. But one listen to "Free" from the EP and one has a sense of where Building 429 could have gone with its hard-charging, power chord attack. With strong lyrics and an impressive wall-of-guitars sound from lead man Jason Roy, Paul Bowden, and Jesse Garcia, the track is the best this expanded edition has to offer. Sonic cousin "One Time Too Many" shows a rare grit and is one of the release's most adventurous numbers. "Never Look Away", co-written by Roy and worship artist Jason Ingram, and "Shadows of Angels" are the other worthy highlights that will reasonate with listeners. Otherwise, the brand of rock served up is all too predictable and uninspiring, drawing obvious comparisons to Creed, Jeremy Camp, and Kutless. Whether the band plays it safe next time or reaches out for more creativity should determine its shelf life among a developing and growing number of Christian formulaic rock bands. -- Michael Lyttle

5 out of 5 stars True to their name.......2006-03-19

Building 429's album truly reflects their mission statement.Their songs truly build for the edifying of the believer in Christ. This is one of my favorite contemporary cds. With each song there is something that we can each relate to in our everyday life.

3 out of 5 stars This building rocks but defines itself in the more subtle moments.......2005-09-27

It's in their more subtle moments that Building 429 shines. Songs like "The Space in Between Us" and "No One Else Knows" are well-crafted, hook-laden pop/rock songs. The latter is a beautiful ballad, which is currently making its way up Christian radio. In the "Spirit Lives On" the band starts with a promising musical intro that unfortunately gets lost in the background.

Without wanting to take away anything from their break out hit "Glory Defined," it's songs like it that employ crunchy guitars that sound a little generic. Though the band sounds similar to a number of pop/rock Christian artists, those that enjoy Christian radio will find a number of songs that they can appreciate.

This extended edition has alternate versions of "Glory Defined," "No One Else Knows," a couple of previously out of print songs, and a rocking version of Chris Tomlin's "Famous One." The CD also includes the video for "Glory Defined." The additional songs don't add that much. Those who have the 12 song CD are better off waiting for the next release. This might be worthwhile for those who only have the original EP version.

It will be interesting to see if they can further define themselves on their next release. With a strong male vocalist, a good sound, some thoughtful lyrics and now a string of radio hits they have the opportunity to build on their success. This is a good start for a building in progress.

If you like clasic 70's country than this CD is for you. Bring back memories of deer hunting with my Dad and Brothers.

4 out of 5 stars from the vaults.......2005-03-20

"Fightin' Side of Me," was recorded live in Philadelphia in the late '60s or early '70s, when protesting the Vietnam war was all the rage. This is the better of the two live Haggard albums I own, and I love his impressions, along with the novelty song "Harold's Super Service," available no place else. That one inspired a story by Jean Shepherd for "Playboy," about a pump jockey. Any song that can get Jean Shepherd interested is worth hearing--and singing. The truly weird part of this CD is just this--the first part, "Just Between the Two of Us," isn't Merle Haggard. That's a Buck Owens album. There's no mistake whatsoever. So, this is the oddest combo on one CD I ever heard. Luckily I enjoy Buck, so no problem, and I would have paid the full price just for the live Haggard album alone if I had to. a real treat.

5 out of 5 stars Merle Haggard "Live In Muskogee Oklahoma" from 1969.......2004-04-20

I own the vinyl version and couldn't wait for this album to come out in CD form. Another album where Merle is at his very best.

5 out of 5 stars merle haggard : the fightin' side of me - live.......2004-04-18

what a great album! my dad had this album on 8 track when i was a kid. i've been looking for it for 25 years and finally someone has re-released it! this is hag and the strangers at their best. the highlight of the album for me is merle doing his impersonations of marty robbins, hank snow, johnny cash, and a killer buck owens that you would swear is really him! if you're a haggard fan this is a must have. if i could own only one hag album, this would be it!

2 out of 5 stars Just Between Us.......2005-02-05

Good debut CD. I was a few years late in getting into Norman Brown. A few years after he released this I copped this, and throughly enjoyed it. Fav cuts, the title cuts, and the remake of too high(with Stevie) I got all his CD's, and along wth Ronny Jordan, is my Fav artist in this genre.

I simply love Norman Brown, I have to say that he is a an exceptional guitarist. Just between us is my absolutely favorite track, its one of those songs that you sip your Merlot to after a long hard day at the office. I also enjoy listening to his other CD, Just Chillin....that whole CD is dedicated to myself because it captures my moods on so many levels. I cannot wait to see him in concert. NORMAN BROWN ROCKS!!!!!

    5 out of 5 stars ecstasy.......2002-12-26

Being a jazz freak, i keep a overwhelming collection of jazz CDs. In my archive, i have closely gaurded Norman Brown's album and place them under lock and key!! Norman Brown is one of the greatest jazz artist of all time. By my reckoning, he is a living icon. he sings my kind of jazz - smooth, well orchestrated, and alloyed with R&B touch. Of particular mention, is "Just between us", "After the Storm" and "Celebration".These CDs are one of his greatest works. His use of those fingers on the guitar fascinates me. Keep the flag flying, Norman!!

5 out of 5 stars The best Christian music Album since "Jars of Clay"(self-titled).......2005-12-22

Let me preface this by saying that I'm an old school rock fan. That is I prefer good instrumentals over good or cool lyrics every time. That being said this easily the best Christian album I've heard in a long time. Note I didn't say this is the best album by a christian artist I've heard in a long time Savior by Skillet for example was a brilliant album especially if you like metal but it wasn't necessarily a great christian album that is to say that it didn't have any truely gripping or interesting socio-religious commentary.

This album really is a worship album for the 21'st century. Glory Defined is an incrediblly moving ballad that to be quite frank I'm almost a little suprised didn't get any air-play on main-stream radio. I haven't listened to this album enough to pick out details on indiviidual tracks yet but as whole this album is brilliantly produced and has touching religious lyrics that back up the instrumentals. As a Christian I think that it is important for people to listen to music with religious messages for most people the types of truly religious music such as choirs, hymns, and modern worship choruses can seem inaccessible but even so I think it's important that you listen to music that speaks to you that you can also enjoy. Literally whatever kind of music your into this is possible. If you don't believe me consider this. My favourite genere of music is british rock(for record the U2 is the greatest band of all time). A great british rock band that is also a great worship band I listen to is Delirious I could go on talking about other great bands that have written worship music in unlikely generes but it would be pointless. In conculsion if your looking for a christmas present this is a great worship/rock album buy it if that sounds in anyway enticing to you.

    2 out of 5 stars Im not a kid.......2005-10-10

In my opinion most of these songs sound the same. And One Time To Many is a blatant rip-off of Cadillac by Mest. The meanings are good but the music is very mediocre and boring. Just my opinion.

4 out of 5 stars Starts strong, ends....not as strong.......2005-08-22

This cd opens up with their old skool creedish-like single Glory Defined which is a pretty good alt. rocker. Next up are the wonderful songs Above It All, The Space In Between Us (Best soft rock song of the year in my opinion) and the surprising hard rocker One Time Too Many. However, after the first 4 songs, the cd takes a dip for the worse. While none of the tracks towards the end are horrible they are just rather generic and seem to be lacking a certain hop. If the rest of the cd were like the first four songs I'd be giving this a 5+ on the rating system.

4 out of 5 stars Great Lyrics, Great Sound.......2005-08-21

Prior to buying this album, I had only heard two of their songs, 'Glory Defined' and the title track.

The rest of the album contains songs that sound almost as good as those two. The entire album is full of songs with solid Christian lyrics and a very pleasant, energetic rock sound.

This is definitely a worthwhile album. I recommend it.

5 out of 5 stars This CD is AWESOME!!!!.......2005-06-22

This CD has got to be one of the greatest Christain CDs this year. The only CDs that are better are Kutless (Strong Tower) and Phillips, Craig, and Dean (Let the Worshipers Arise), who are both hard to beat, but this is a close 3rd. I'm listening to it while I write this review. The three best songs (in this order) are "Shadow of Angels" (#6), "Glory Defined" (#1), and "The Space in Between Us" (#3). I highly reccomend this CD.

5 out of 5 stars THE essential live Hip album.......2007-02-16

It is very easy to get excited about this CD when you look at the set list for this concert. A solid arrangement of singles and classics along with other songs not as popular such as The Wherewithal and Don't Wake Daddy make it timeless. I can easily see myself picking this CD up again and enjoying it just as much 10 years from now.

When buying and listening to live albums of any band I always look for a few distinct qualities: Set list, length, quality of recording, amounts of ad-libbing, and crowd interaction. This album fails in none of those departments! The song choices for the concert is excellent in my opinion, the quality is equivalent to a studio recording, and the crowd is heard well throughout the whole CD.

The only possible drawbacks are that sometimes Gordy gets a little long-winded between verses and songs. Although it'll never bother me, I can see it being a low point for some listeners. Finally, even though its 14 tracks long I still would wish for more tracks but I think that's just me being greedy.

    Buy this!!

5 out of 5 stars I Said "I'm Tragically Hip, Come On Just Let's Go"..........2005-04-15

... She sort of bit her lip, "Gee I don't know"

This was my first ever Tragically Hip CD and (moreover) one of the first CDs that I ever owned. So, I have a bit of a bias in its favour. That being said, there is no better introduction to the Hip than their stellar live album "Live Between Us".

This CD offers hit after hit and really captures some of the tremendous energy of the Hip live. Ive seen them 4 times now and those have been some of my favourite concerts ever. Ive never been disappointed by the Hip live, and you won't be disappointed by this.

I would hesitate to recommend this album to the seasoned Hip collector, as it doesn't add that much to the studio versions and there are many, many great live Hip tracks widely available to download ("Killer Whale Tank", anyone?). But, it is still a great CD and is far from a waste of money

All in all, this is a awesome live CD from a awesome live band.

5 out of 5 stars The Hip at their finest.......2004-07-23

As a long time listener to "The Hip" transplated to the good ol U.S of A I turn all my friends into Hip fans with this one.. Some of the most recent work they have done shows more maturity, but this is a great intro to a great Canadian Band...

4 out of 5 stars What a live album should be........2003-12-10

This was a very pleasant suprise. Not only did I get the live album I was looking for, but I also got most of their popular songs. Of course there's a few tracks missing, but this does include "Grace Too", "Springtime In Vienna", "Gift Shop", and "Ahead By A Century". Plus it's got the excellent and moving "Courage". Most people should like "Gordon Downie's" ramblings between songs, but everyone should like how good this sounds. It's one of the best sounding live albums I've ever heard. Near studio quality, but with the crowd noise of course. Overall, I'd call it the best release from "The Tragically Hip", and one of the few available, even though it's an import.

5 out of 5 stars the "hippest" live cd oot there.......2003-02-07

"Live Between Us" is the only live CD i have ever heard that captures the whole experience of a concert. You can feel the crowd from beginning to end...The CD captures the unmistakeable presence of Gord D as he hammers oot the lyrics...from The Luxury to Nautical Disaster...this CD captures all that a live show is...and more

3 out of 5 stars Exciting, raw, and the real deal.......2006-08-31

The Graham Bond Organization is famous more for spawning two-thirds of Cream, than for their own accomplishments, at least in the US where it has been virtually impossible to get their recordings until recently. This disc shows them to be great musicians with absoultely no talent for playing it safe or going commercial. Their hard-driving, r&b sound is truly unique. Some have complained about Bond's singing being awful. Well, that's a matter of opinion. Captain Beefheart was an acquired taste, too. Although the vocal on "Tammy" is truly so surreally bad that it does defy description. Not all of the material is great but what comes through consistently is the sheer energy of this group and the virtuosity of the players. Bond, himself, is a true whiz on the organ - it's some of the most powerful and nimble keyboard playing you will ever hear on a pop music recording. And Baker's presence is very much in evidence throughout. Dick Heckstall-Smith, who went on to a long career playing with Jack Bruce and Colleseum, throws jazz licks into a rock environment with inspired results. And Jack, who is quite prominent on back-up vocals, plays a steady and imaginatvie bass. I bought this CD as a Cream fan, just to complete my collection - but I've been playing it constantly, enjoying about 2/3 of the material very much.

2 out of 5 stars Great music, but sadly not great sound quality!.......2006-08-10

The GBO were one of the great British R&B bands, being and off-shoot from Alexis Korner's Blues Incorporated. Enjoyable music throughout is sadly marred by indifferent rather 'flat' sound quality. Whatever the packaging says, I am told the set was actually dubbed from disc rather than taken from the master tapes; that would explain the odd 'tick' here and there.

3 out of 5 stars good but no john mayall.......2004-01-26

i just wanted to say this is some pretty cool music if you let it grow on you.for the review that says people dont like the singing,i can understand at first listen you might quistion but bond does have his own cool sound.now for the record dont listen to everything people say sometimes you must be the judge.now to slip john mayall in as an example of singing that isnt that good is just wrong.first of i think he is a great vocalist.he can rock, sound like a soulman, get psychedelic, hit smooth notes that sound like the yound dude he is{like on the "barewires":suite intro for example}and dont forget he is white.overall there is no comparison in vocals and or tunes, especially when we start in on Barewires.i mean the first track alone is worth buying the record.its one of those trk1.-pts-a,b,c,d,e,f type tune and it is completly amazing without the 6 other killer tunes including one of my favorites SANDY".im not saying dont buy this record but unless you own it allready get BARewIRES' so you wont be going around thinking youve got the oldschool music thing figured out when youve yet to start your journey.

5 out of 5 stars A Lost Classic of British Blues.......2002-07-23

Few people - other than obsessive Cream fans - have heard of the Graham Bond Organisation, and that's a shame. The group is historically significant because it represents the earliest recordings of Cream's rhythm section - bassist Jack Bruce and drummer Ginger Baker. However, the leaders of this group were singer/organist Bond and sax-man Dick Heckstall-Smith. Quite simply, the Organisation cut some of the grooviest blues- and jazz-rock of the early 1960s. The absence of guitar makes for an unusually "cool" British blues sound. And (hold onto your hats!) Ginger Baker's drum work is understated and tasteful, providing a swinging foundation for the other members' improvisation. Some have mentioned that Bond is not much of a singer and, while that may be true, he's certainly no worse than John Mayall. In short, this is an underrated and underappreciated classic that is a must-have for the fan of early British R&B.

4 out of 5 stars The Organization Live.......2002-06-21

This was another band that never got their true impact down on record. I have this collection on reissue vinyl. There are some excellent tracks (Walking In The Park, Wade In The Water, Night Time Is The Right Time, even if he ain't Ray Charles) but I saw this band live and close up many times in places like the Flamingo, Klooks Kleek, Friars etc. They were always good and on a really good night, they were awesome! The well documented differences in the band seemed to produce something that on paper looked as if it should never have happened. Definitely one for afficionados of British RnB.

Rawer and bolder than fellow L.A. hardcore folkies X, the Geraldine Fibbers have lashed out with a frighteningly successful debut album. Lost Somewhere Between the Earth and My Home is an oppressively heavy record, both musically and emotionally, that brings punk rock as close as it has ever come to sounding rootsy. Ferocious and painfully beautiful, singer Carla Bozulich can't seem to decide if she's Patti Smith or Patsy Cline. Similarly numbing and relentless, Daniel Keenan's bleeding guitar and Jessy Greene's weeping violin grind and moan like the Velvet Underground reinterpreting Creedence Clearwater Revival tunes. In other words, the Fibbers growl resembles 10,000 Maniacs--that is, if they really sounded like ten thousand maniacs. Throughout Lost Between, Bozulich wails over broken and destructive relationships--that common lyrical bond between classic country and gothic gloom-rock--as if she'd met the devil at the crossroads, pierced his tongue, and then given him a ride with her to hell. She sings about sinking to a point so low that pitiful hate is the only place to turn--and where half that hate is violently thrust at those who've abused her, while the other half gets nursed inside. Sometimes she tells stories, like the grotesque tales in "A Song About Walls" and "Richard." Other times she just spews narcotized hallucinations like "Lillybelle" and "Marmalade." But always the imagery teeters nervously between goodnight prayer and bad nightmare. --Roni Sarig

    5 out of 5 stars Amazing & Powerful Music.......2002-10-11

I bought this album after seeing the Dragon Lady video (I'm probably the only person who saw it. LOL!). Dragon Lady is great but every song on "Lost Somewhere..." is as powerful as DL. In fact, this album is so powerful, I can't listen to it too often because it's so gut-wrenching. And yet because it's so rewarding, I want to listen to it as often as I can. The music is so alive and vibrant and spontaneous, it's what music should sound like. And the lyrics are amazing. It's a CD I'll be treasuring for a long time. Long live the Geraldine Fibbers.

5 out of 5 stars The world was robbed of this band..........2001-01-21

As someone who over the last 18 years has owned at one time or another well over 3,000 CDs, tapes, and albums, I have to say that this record is in the top 10 of all I have ever heard. To quote Frank Sinatra (via Staurday Night Live) Carla Bozulich, the lead singer, has chunks of Courtney Love in her stool! This is the fiercest, most fully-conceived female-led punk rock record of all time. Hands down... How to describe the sound without putting people off-- it's punck-rock country-blues, played at blazing volumes. The musicianship is outstanding-- this is a band captured at its absolute PEAK. This record captures that rare magic of hearing a group of dedicated musicians playing together with a sense of purpose. It is inconceivable that this record did not lead to the break-out of this band. One suspects that the ....... (and relatively undeserved) success of Hole and Courtney Love led to this record getting overlooked. Does the world only have room for one strong female rock singer at a time? Even if that were true, one listen to this record will confirm that Carla was robbed! Everything you hate about Courney Love, Carla does NOT have! We were robbed of the experience of watching music this good succeed.

The subsequent Fibbers album, Butch, has its moments for sure, but this one sets the standard.

Lately, Carla has done an album with guitarist Nels Cline (a later member of the Fibbers) under the name Scarnella, that is very raw, rough and unrehearsed. It's a distant echo of this album, though.

If you love music, it is your DUTY to buy this album. It is in a class all by itself.

5 out of 5 stars The Geraldine Fibbers.......2000-10-11

When Carla sings she sends chills up my spine. You music lovers know the chill I am talking about. The only way I know how to describe this woman is shes sings with the experience and pain of Billy Holiday and the passion of Wendy O Willams(maybe more apparant on the album Butch). The music all together is fantastic! You can hear her influences of punk, country, blues and whatever else they wanted to throw in the mix. This band should have made it big. Some of the lame bands out there that made it big can't even hold a candle to the Geraldine Fibbers!

5 out of 5 stars Musical Abusement Park.......2000-04-02

the emotional pitch of this album swings back and forth so frequently and fluently that there have been times i've literally had to stop listening because the ride was too intense. it's in the way the bass and viola of the opening "lillybelle" lull you up and up and up before the guitar pulls you over the top, hurtling you down faster and rougher and scarier than you thought things would get. lillybelle sets the tone lyrically as well: she's one of a cast of empty, wasted, battered, dreamy, graceful, stoic, resilient characters. "get off of that trip" indeed...except there are 11 more songs liable to lock you right where you sit.

by the time you hit the too-good-for-pop-radio "dragon lady" you're prepared for anything, and get it, straight through to the ultimate album closer "get thee gone," a moody waltz at once punk and country, resigned and defiant, inviting and discordant. as a whole, the album is not really punk and not really art-rock and not really country and not really indie. like the lifestyle it portrays, it ain't all pretty, but in the end you find yourself cycling back through it over and over again.

side note: this is the only live band i've ever seen avoid the encore facade, simply stating "ok now we'll play a few more songs for our encore" and playing the remainder of the set instead of walking off and having to be artificially coaxed back by an audience desperate for more. and this is their best album. need i say more?

5 out of 5 stars Plays like the hoedown before the apocalypse..........1999-07-01

That more people know about Shania Twain than Carla Bouzlich is a big shame. Buy this album if you're convinced that country has been sold out to hat-wearing yuppies or that punk has gone stale. Her vocals and lyrics will make you think of a drug-addled Patsy Cline. Much like the legendary Cline, Bouzlich fully understands the value of writing songs that are deceptively simple yet hold an sinister undercurrent to them. Just as the music starts to lull you, you feel the hand of the devil just barely on your shoulder...
