    5 out of 5 stars 50 All-American Favorites.......2007-06-30

I just purchased this CD Collection set Recently. In my opinion, this is the Best Mitch Miller CD that has ever been released. (5 + Stars all The Way Through! I have alot of these songs on a great 33 record album which I also purchased back in the mid-60's. This CD set is fabulous & a must to have if you like Harmony. This great CD also could be re-titled--"Songs Of Amercica" because it has all of the Great Classic Songs such as "My Wild Irish Rose", "I'll take You Home Again Kathleen", "Shine On Harvest Moon", "Rock Of Ages" for example. There is only one thing that is negative about this collection of great classic songs of days gone by & that is--It does not include the great song (" Toot, Toot Toosie Goodbye"). This CD is Wonderful & the best CD in my opinion of the ole Classic "Songs of Amercia"! Superior Quality! Excellent Harmony! You will be Very Pleased with this Collection Set. Buy It Now! You Will Love It! Also if you like great Harmony--such as Barbershop Quartet's just let me know--I'll give you some great info!

5 out of 5 stars Perfect for the Elderly.......2007-05-12

This product is excellent for my elderly.they really like it and love it.its a collection of beautiful songs from the 40's & 50's.

5 out of 5 stars Exactly what I was looking for.......2007-04-13

It's just like I remember on TV (I have a good imagination) and LP (without the skips and crackles) when I was a kid. It's fun to plug it in and sing along while riding in the car. If you wanna forget your cares for a little while and get happy, sing along with Mitch.

    5 out of 5 stars Great!.......2007-01-13

I was very pleased when I heard the quality of the voices on this CD. I was looking for the words to the songs my mother sang to me as a child (ie. rocking me to sleep). I wanted to learn them so I could now sing them to my little girl. This is easy to sing with and learn all of the words.

5 out of 5 stars Beyond All Expectations.......2006-06-24

This collection is frankly well beyond my already very high expectations, in terms of absolute listenability, the song selections, and the quality of the reproductions. These CDs contain fifty of the best sing-alongs ever, and is a great compilation from several Mitch Miller LPs. You do not have to be in the "over-fifty crowd" to enjoy these glorious songs from our past, and the full, incredibly rich vocals by these singers will fill your "nostalgic cup" to overflowing!

    Album Description

Sure, 'Tarkio' has the hit 'One Toke over the Line', but don't stop there-these two albums by Mike Brewer and Tom Shipley rank high on the West Coast folk 'n' country-rock pantheon with the New Riders' and Beau Brummels' best. 'Weeds', in fact, may even be a better album than 'Tarkio', as it features production by Nick Gravenites and guitar by Mike Bloomfield-it's the Electric Flag as backing band! 'Tarkio', meanwhile, has pedal steel from Jerry Garcia and such a late-'60s California vibe that you just might get a contact high. We're reissuing these albums together with original art and new notes-a 'Collectors' Choice Music' exclusive!

5 out of 5 stars Ahhh, the memories.......2007-07-04

I heard B & S in a coffee house in Kansas City in 1971, have almost worn out the album, and now hearing these tracks, takes me back to my college years! The so-called musicians of 2007 could learn a thing or two from true artists like these guys!

    4 out of 5 stars Great.......2006-05-17

Great to have this music available again...Now if only they would release "Shake Off the Demon" and "Rural Space" on CD which both had some wonderful music on them too.

5 out of 5 stars Like the old days.......2006-03-18

We have been looking for a digital master of this for ages. Many of these songs, particularly on the Tarkio Road portion, not only harken back to the 70's, but seem very relevant even today. A truly wonderful compilation of a duo that should get far more credit than it does.

    5 out of 5 stars Outstanding country-folk-rock two-fer.......2005-03-02

Like several other one-hit wonders, Brewer & Shipley were a bona fide music act before (and after) their brief intersection with Top-40 fame. The native Oklahoman and Ohioan (respective to their billing) had been kicking around the Los Angeles folk scene for a couple of years when they recorded their 1968 debut ("Down in L.A.") for A&M. By the time they waxed this pair of albums for Kama Sutra in '69 and '70, they'd settled back in the Midwest.

Both albums were recorded in San Francisco with Nick Gravenites producing and assembling the who's-who bands. "Weeds" features Mike Bloomfield on guitar, Mark Naftalin on piano and organ, Richard Greene on fiddle, and Red Rhodes on pedal steel. "Tarkio" retains several of the players (most notably Naftalin), and adds a guest spot for Jerry Garcia on his then newly learned pedal steel. Across the two LPs' 20 tracks, Brewer & Shipley forge a perfectly balanced blend of folk harmony, country twang and rock power.

"Weeds" features a number of standout originals and covers, including the easy ballad "Lady Like You," the slumberous "Indian Summer," and a truly sublime cover of Jim Pepper's ancestral peyote chant, "Witchi-Tai-To." "Tarkio" moves its hippie vibe into the '70s, with strong echoes of the Nixon Years' creeping paranoia. In addition to the rousing hit "One Toke Over the Line," and poetic, philosophical folk songs like "The Light" and "Ruby on the Morning," the album is filled with personal travelogues that match external miles with internal turbulence. "Song From Platte River" and "Tarkio Road" essay the repressed experience of the counterculture, and "Don't Want to Die in Georgia" voices the anxiety of many freaks' travel in the South.

Both albums are vastly under-known 5-star folk-rock classics.

5 out of 5 stars Too long in coming!.......2004-11-11

At long last I can cease my search for my Holy Grail of record albums: Weeds. As a borderline hippie girl and member of a Christian commune in the early 70's, all of us blue-jean babies high-kicked to "Witchi-Tai-To" at midnight communions (Jesus People knew how to rock out!). That song still inspires me with its plaintive pre-amble, "Oh my God, must it be so hard . . . I'm doin' all that I can" seguing into a liquid bongo beat that builds and builds, then crescendos with the mantra, "what a spirit round my head, makes me feel glad that I'm not dead." Until now, all Brewer & Shipley re-issues had the lengthy song chopped in two or faded out prematurely. For anyone who misses an era long-gone, get this album and crank it up loud -- it's guaranteed to "shake off your demons," (another great Brewer & Shipley song . . . Thanks for this long-overdue re-issue!

    5 out of 5 stars My father-in-law was thrilled!.......2007-01-09

Bought this for my father-in-law for Christmas and he was very happy! Great price for a hard to find album!

4 out of 5 stars Very Good CD.......2006-07-18

Here is an artist who deserves a little more recognition. Tompall Glaser is usually associated with the so-called "Outlaw" movement of the late-'70's; this seems to detract from the great voice that he posesses. Tompall's voice can be easily confused with his greatest influence, none other than Marty Robbins. But, while Tompall is the most famous of his band of brothers, there are only 6 songs on this 24 track Cd which are true Tompall solos. I can't say that I am a great fan of the Glaser Bros. early sound, as they sound much more "folk" than country....in fact, a few of the early tracks on this album are pretty dry and boring. Still, the music provided here are well produced and the sound is great. Overall, I give the album a B, and recommend it without reservation.

    5 out of 5 stars Awesome CD!!!.......2005-12-11

Excellent from start to finish. My mom heard it, and loved it as well. I knew it would be good. Enjoy just about everything I have of Jim Glaser. Great talent here!

5 out of 5 stars I missed them the first time around.......2005-07-21

A few years ago I found a cassette with a familiar song title but unfamiliar group at a local thrift shop and took a chance and bought it. That was my introduction to Tompall Glaser and the Glaser Brothers. I absolutely loved it and have been looking for others since. I was thrilled to find this CD a couple of years ago and have enjoyed it immensely ever since. I don't know where I was when they were active in the 70's and 80's, but I am sure enjoying them now. Their distinctive voices and wonderful harmonies are a delight to the ear.

    5 out of 5 stars Tompall--The greatest.......2005-03-01

Tompall and the Glasers rendition of the Kristofferson classic "Loving Her Was Easier" is simply one of the most beautiful love songs ever recorded. It is head and shoulders above even Kristoffersons own recording of a fantastic song. I need only to tune it in to hear my late wifes voice, and fill my heart.

My folks had "Tell Tales! Legends and Nonsense" and I've been having great fun introducing my daughters to this music. I wasn't previously familiar with the "Land of Giants" album, but the girls like it.

4 out of 5 stars New Christie Minstrels.......2007-05-13

I like the Christie Minstrels and their music brings back the '60's and my early college days. Fun stuff! Sure nice not to have to listen to my worn out old albums!Good for cleaning the house or any of those chores you can't summon up the energy to get started on.

4 out of 5 stars New Christy Minstrels CD - Tall Tales.......2007-01-10

This is a great album for playing with your kids. The sound of this group is terrific, and the folksy music is just feel good fun stuff. Also check out their Christmas album.

5 out of 5 stars Land of Giants.......2006-06-15

My grandma taught school in the L.A. Unified school district for many years, including the 60's and 70's. She used Land of Giants as a teaching tool for her 5th graders as they learned about United States History. She had them make costumes, and props, and she played the LP on a portable turntable as they presented a program to their parents at the end of the year. She couldn't sing a note, but she appreciated good music, and I was lucky enough to spend time at her house listening to that album over and over. I still have the poor scratchy LP, with a much-taped cover, but I am delighted to have a chance to purchase this music in CD form. Randy Sparks' composing/arranging talent is phenomenal, and his New Christy Minstrels' singing and playing talents are, too. Land of Giants and Sam Hinton's Singing Across the Land were my introductions to North American Folk Music, and the beginning of a lifelong interest. I wonder if any of Grandma's students out there remember Land of Giants?

    5 out of 5 stars Nostalgic fun!.......2005-08-23

I had the LP's but somehow they got lost.

5 out of 5 stars Witches of Eastwick Score Review.......2007-06-06

This score, composed by John Williams, is a must-have soundtrack for anyone who appreciates Williams' music. Although the film is not the greatest, the score adds a unique flavour to William's repertoire of excisting classics. There are a number of themes which have been cleverly woven into the music, some being mischevious, such as the main 'Dance of the Witches' theme, and others quite sombre yet breathtaking, such as the 'Ballroom' cue. Overall, this soundtrack will keep you entertained throughout the whole hour or so of playing time, and will also continue to surprise on numerous listenings.

5 out of 5 stars Delightfully wicked composition from the Oscar winner!.......2007-03-04

While John Williams will probably be most remembered for his music to Spielberg blockbusters ("Jaws," "Close Encounters of the Third Kind," "Raiders of the Lost Ark," "E.T., The Extra-Terrestrial," "Schindler's List," and "Jurassic Park," among ohters) or other moneymakers (the "Star Wars" saga and "Superman-The Movie"), his score to the Jack Nicholson film ranks as one of his finest. The score foreshadows some of the arrangements that he would later use in the "Harry Potter" series but has hints of Camille Saint-Saens as well as Williams' own earlier work.

However, the composer really pulled out all the stops and created a blend of excitement, wonder, playfulness, along with macabre humor. He carefully incorporates a "linking" melody throughout most of the fourteen cuts, making each selection a fitting accompaniment to the ones that precede or follow it.

"The Dance of the Witches" is a triumph and stands as one of the composer's most infectious and jaw-dropping concoctions. And "The Seduction of Suki and The Ballroom Scene" are near perfection, both lilting and captivating. "The Destruction of Darryl" explodes with frenetic action that I'm sure the musicians were exhausted after recording it.

"The Witches of Eastwick," along with the composer's work for 1979's "Dracula" and the early 70's television of "Jane Eyre," reveal the many facets of a multi-talented artist who has been at the forefront of film music writing for more than four decades.

5 out of 5 stars The Devil gets all the best tunes.......2007-02-03

After 15 years of fruitless hunting in the UK, I was delighted to find the Witches' soundtrack lurking in Amazon's US vaults.

One of Williams' finest hours, it's much wittier than his more popular 'magical' movie scores - namely the Harry Potter series for which he merely plundered his own Star Wars back catalogue.

Mischievous and playful yet edged with a hint of menace, it's the perfect accompaniment to a film about Satan and his unwitting concubines. Williams evidently put a lot of thought into matching the music to the characters and the actors that play them, combining Jack Nicholson's roguishness with the beauty and maturity of Cher, Susan Sarandon and Michelle Pfeiffer. The result is utterly enchanting.

5 out of 5 stars Bicentennial Military Music.......2007-03-28

The music from these three US Military Bands was originally released in 1977 as single Long Playing Records to celebrate the Nation's Bicentennial Celebration. It is missing the US ARMY BAND (which I regret) but otherwise the music is GREAT and the Bands are FIRST CLASS as you might expect. Except for the different services renderings of THE NATIONAL ANTHEM, no marches are duplicated. If you enjoy good foot tapping Martial Music...this 2-CD set is worth the price.

    2 out of 5 stars Disappointed listener.......2006-05-13

I have been listening to military band music for years, and am rarely disappointed. However, this compendium of music by the U.S. Navy, Army, and Marine bands and associated choral groups is not to my taste. Many of the arrangements are strange, and there is much too much vocal music when what I want to hear is the bands play. I would not have bought this album hhad I known beforehand what I know now.

5 out of 5 stars Classic US Service Band Recordings!.......2005-08-10

Its nice to see these old RCA recordings brought out on CD. These were originally released on LP back in the early 1960s to help finance the Kennedy Center in DC. They were popular recordings then. Unfortunatley only three out of the original four are offered here. Missing is the US Army Band which also recorded as part of this series. The sound qaulity has been left largely as it was, which wes pretty good for early 1960s. The only problem with the original recordings was that they tended to sound poor on the inner tracks of the LP. Fortunately that problem no longer exists on CD. Due to the format there tends to be some repeat material here. How many times do we have to hear the national anthem played by each band! Still, there are some good selections played when these bands were in their prime and larger than they are today. Its good to see recordings being re-issued on US service bands other than Altissimo! which tends to use just in-the-can material from band libraries. Here we have the original stuff played in a manner which is no longer done today. For those seeking vintage recordings of US service bands you can't go wrong here.

Jerry Butler has long been one of the best R&B singers in music. Here at last you get his best two albums
on 1 CD. 60 minutes of pure magic. Almost all the hits are here, Hey Western Union Man, Only The Strong
Survive, Moody Woman, What's The Use of Breaking Up and a Brand New Me. It is a great collection
that exemplifies his talent and skill as a great singer. It is well worth the purchase. My only negative
is would have been nice to include He Will Break Your Heart, Find Another Woman,
Time and Faith, and his last hit, Mr. Dream Merchant.

4 out of 5 stars Fats plays Fats.......2007-02-07

This is a delightful compilation of Fats' at his best. The remastering is excellent and I would recomend this CD to anyone wanting to listen to jazz piano playing - the CD is worth getting even if only for the scintillating improvisation of 'Aint Misbehavin'

5 out of 5 stars All Around Musical Force.......2006-10-04

Fats Waller had a strong touch on the Keys, could write very good&had a distinctive voice that fueled so many tracks. his band was tight as well. he had such a feel good quality in his playing&overall vibe as a Musician.I got Rhythm is one song that never gets old from this collection. this is a very fully well represented compilation. Fats Waller doesn't get his full due as a all around force. this is a strong collection.

5 out of 5 stars Puts a smile on your face!.......2005-08-02

Excellent compilation of Fats Waller's recordings...both solo piano tracks and with his band. He sings on some of the songs too...as always, his music making puts a smile on your face and gets your toes a tappin'!

5 out of 5 stars FATS WALLER, SECOND ONLY TO LOUIS ARMSTRONG!!!.......2004-03-17

THOMAS FATS WALLER RULES! NO DOUBT ABOUT IT! THE MUSICIAN, A PIANIST AND VOCALIST, POSSESSES THE CHARISMA OF CAB CALAWAY, THE INNOVATIVE BRILLIANCE OF LOUIS ARMSTRONG AND THE DOWN AND DIRTY, NEW ORLEANS SWANKINESS OF THELONIOUS MONK.

SON OF A SOUTHERN BAPTIST MINISTER & A FEMALE PIANIST, VOCALIST AND ORGANIST, WALLER WAS OBVIOUSLY BORN INTO THE MUSICAL LIFE. FOR A MAN OF OVER 300 POUNDS, HE SURE KNEW HOW TO SWING. AND THE GUY WROTE OVER 400 SONGS, MANY MANY OF THEM HUGE HITS.

HE JUST MAKES YOU FEEL GOOD, DAMMIT!

IN MY HUMBLE OPINION, WALLER'S GREATEST EFFORTS INCLUDE: YOUR FEETS TOO BIG, THIS JOINT IS JUMPIN', AIN'T MISBEHAVIN' AND CRAZY 'BOUT MY BABY.

5 out of 5 stars FAT, HIP AND SWINGIN'.......2004-03-06

5 out of 5 stars An EXCELLENT collection.......2007-06-11

Until I heard this album (CD), I had forgotten how many great songs Faron Young had recorded! This compilation includes some real treasures, and the recording quality is excellent, too. If you ever liked anything by Faron Young, you will love this album!

5 out of 5 stars Absolutely the best.......2006-04-30

Faron Young may have had the best voice ever in country music. The earliest recordings on this album are pure country, the quality is superb, and the range of his voice is stunning. A number of the later recordings, made at the beginning of the rock-and-roll era are not true country, but, once again, the quality of his voice is something to appreciate. Fantastic!!
This may be the best country music I've ever heard.

5 out of 5 stars An underrated artist and a great collection!.......2003-11-16

When looking back at the history of county music, many people somehow ignore the importance of Faron Young's career. And for many years, Faron's catalog was subjected to incomplete "best ofs" and "greatest hits" discs that either were way too short or focused on his later, lesser years at Mercury Records (which, admittedly, produced some great songs too).

Even though the Bear Family box set is the complete collection of all of Faron's Capitol recordings, it's $90 (or more) price tag can scare away the more casual fan. This 2-CD set is the perfect compromise for those on a budget, since it collects all of the hit singles from that crucial ten year period but is comprehensive enough to satisfy most appetites. For those with even tighter budgets, the Country Music Foundation has a nice 1-CD set of Faron's Capitol years called "Live Fast, Love Hard: Original Capitol Recordings" that covers most of the essentials, but lacks the depth of this set.

And while this 2-CD set eventually convinced me that I needed Bear Family's 5 disc set, I still retained this collection for it's portability.

Whether you're looking for the perfect starter to your Faron Young collection, or looking to upgrade from a single disc set, look no further than this 2-disc set. You won't be disappointed.

    5 out of 5 stars A voice better than I remembered.......2003-01-01

I had forgotten how pure was Faron Young's voice. I play this two cd set as much, if not more, than any other in my large collection. It is a soft and pleasant trip down memory lane of the 1950's and 1960's, and well worth the price.
