What goes around comes around ambient. That's the message from a third generation of electronica artists who were just leaving the womb when Brian Eno's early works were being diffused in the 1970s. They were barely teens when the Orb rolled forth in the '90s. But new artists like Boards of Canada, the Album Leaf, and Explosions in the Sky are taking those early ambient primers and adding geometries of glitch and dream guitar to the mix, creating a melodic brand of ethereal music with an edge. Marconi Union, a Manchester duo, follow suit on a CD that travels in cinematic melancholy and textural malaise. Their songs build slowly, emerging out of a flattened landscape of static and stillness to attain a quietly triumphal beauty. Percussion is almost subliminal in journeys that pulse more than groove. It sometimes gets ominous, with an ostinato bass growl prowling through a Blade Runner landscape on "Inter." But usually they generate a quiet awe, like the slow build of "Sleepless." Expect to hear tracks from Distance in soundtracks and commercials near you soon. --John DilibertoAlbum Description
Marconi Union is a reclusive electronic duo from Manchester, England. Their sound has been described as "a post rock cinematic orchestra." Distance, their first U.S. release, is unique, individual and timeless, fusing acoustic sounds, strings and pianos with electronica, post-rock guitars and even occasional nods towards jazz and dub. Described by the band as "a soundtrack to a film that has not yet been made," listening to Distance evokes the feeling of being driven silently around an unknown city at night, observing the activity and life of the urban sprawl in safety and isolation.Customer Reviews:
re: Celestial Melodies Great Work Album.......2007-06-22
The Interpretation of Dreams.......2007-04-30
All these until Marconi Union and their Distance work. Dreamy atmosphere, almost psychoanalytic, moving in all senses. A perfect link to Eno's Music For Films sequel. A perfect step towards ambient fulfillment.
It is really hopeful that such groups exist and needless to say, we are truly looking forward to their next work.
Energy transfer.......2007-02-13
The first step in the transfer is the way Distance draws the toxicity of my day out of me, leaving me pleasantly drained. The second step of the process, then, is how the movement within each track subtly softens and salves the chisel-bitten edges of my consciousness. In the third step, as fresh fluid trickles in, I am refilled and renewed.
After a day of dying little, moment-by-moment deaths, Distance breathes life back into me, slowly, slowly, and almost imperceptibly.
If you have ragged edges, if you have wounds, this can be a balm for you.
Very Soothing.......2007-01-24
Urban Longing.......2007-01-24
"Through Glass" is more sensuous, while "Buildings and People" has a more luminous trajectory with the feeling that a city has been left completely empty, it is almost haunting in beauty. "A Temporary Life" has shy jazz flourishes, but overall seems to be melting into the night.
The urban moods build on each other until you feel completely relaxed. This album has hints of places you like to be and it seems to call you to distant locations where you'd like to spend more time dreaming.

One of the Best Collections of English Madrigals.......2002-03-27
This album offers a veritable feast of the choicest English madrigals found on any comparable album. From the obligatory "Now is the Month of Maying" and "Fair Phyllis" to the more obscure "Tan ta ra, cries Mars," there is certainly enough on this album to bring a smile to lovers of Renaissance music - and a spark of recognition to anyone who sang traditional madrigals in high school or university. For serious students of early music, this album comes very highly recommended.
Among the more sonorous offerings on this album, Jones' "Farewell, Dear Love" and Dowland's "Come Again," cannot be ignored. Nor can Bennet's immortal "Weep O mine eyes" be matched more musically than here by the King's Singers.
This album has been played again and again for almost 6 years as both serious listening and background working music. And it has yet to lose its delight.

Not as good as version 1 in this series.......2004-09-03
A final note: many of the texts are beautiful (and available from the publisher's web site). However, I would criticize "Who is this that cometh from Edom?" as dwelling just a bit too much on the Jews' rejection of Jesus. Among other reasons & issues, Christianity says that we are all sinners & there is no cause to single a particular group out negatively.

Album Description
Recorded at Brian's Wilderness studios, Eno comes close to the style of Another Green World. Cale is as catchy as he's been since Honi Soit. The result is one of the best albums either one has ever made. This long-awaited re-issue has bonus tracks, new artwork, complete lyrics and extended liner notes.Album Description
Brian Eno and John Cale first collaborated when Eno produced Cale's Words For The Dying, an album that features orchestral settings of Dylan Thomas poems, solo piano pieces, and one quasi-pop song, 'The Soul of Carmen Miranda'. The pair enjoyed that last track so much that Eno ended his 12-year sabbatical from song-based music and, with Cale, quickly wrote and recorded this excellent album of intelligent yet heartfelt pop songs. Unlike most of Eno's collaborations, his ideas don't dominate Wrong Way Up. Vocals and lyrics are split about evenly between Eno and Cale, as exemplified by the hypnotic 'One Word', which features both men simultaneously singing two entirely different sets of lyrics. Two Cale songs are the twin centerpieces, the ominous 'Cordoba' and the surprising and wonderful sing-along 'Been There, Done That', but the album ends with a skeletal Eno masterwork, 'The River' which makes one wish he'd returned to pop music earlier. Quite poppy for the two and very enjoyable, this 2005 reissue was originally released in 1990 & features 12 total tracks including the 2 bonus tracks 'Grandfather's House' & 'You Don't Miss Your Water'. 4 1/2 Stars: Strong Collaboration.......2007-04-16
_________________________________________________________________________________________________________
The remastered sound is an improvement over the original release and the bonus tracks are fine additions, but not essential. If you are an Eno fan try to find the promo CD put out by Opal/Warner Brothers at the time of this release, titled 'Words and Music from Wrong Way Up'. It's difficult to find but well worth the effort. He discusses each song, as well as his working relationship with John Cale. There are lots of fascinating tidbits and insights, such as how the death of his father and birth of his daughter gave him a different outlook on his life and music. I find myself listening to the promo CD, which also includes six of the songs, more than the official release.
One of the most underrated ever.......2007-01-25
One of my all-time favorites.......2006-12-02
I normally like to be challenged by a recording - that is, if it is too "instantly likeable", I get tired of it quickly. This recording is definitely an exception to that rule. I remember hearing one of the tracks on radio, turning it up toward the end to hear who the artists were. I went out, bought it and loved it from the first listen. The variety of styles and lyrics (and moods created) conjure up images in my mind that, by the end, make me feel like I've watched a movie, not just listened to a CD. The melodies are catchy, but not "hooky".
The reissue sounds even better.....or maybe I'm just listening more intently. In any case, it's a winner.
John Cale seems to be at his best in collaboration with other artists. Check out "Songs for Drella" (with Lou Reed from 1990). Although totally different from Wrong Side Up, it is a great listen, too.
An all-too-easy to neglect masterpiece.......2006-10-19
This album is somewhat surprising when given the pairing of Eno and Cale. Though neither is always inaccessible and both have at times produced some music that is almost popular in approach, who would have imagined that the two together would have brought out their purest pop tendencies? There is nothing here that smacks of difficult or avant-garde. This isn't Top 40 pop, but it is wonderfully accessible stuff, as if their intent is to delight the most resistant hearer. Not that it is musically simplistic. Far from it. One just has to pay some attention to the wonderfully contrapuntal rhythms interlacing "Spinning Away" to understand that these are masterful musicians. Both performers have done better work than this, but neither has done so frequently. I'd rank this near the best work that either has done. For Cale, I'd put this slightly behind such albums as PARIS 1919, VINTAGE VIOLENCE, HELEN OF TROY, and SLOW DAZZLE, while it is very nearly as good as Eno's four vocal albums (TAKING TIGER MOUNTAIN BY STRATEGY, HERE COME THE WARM JETS, ANOTHER GREEN WORLD, and BEFORE AND AFTER SCIENCE) and his collaboration with David Byrne, MY LIFE IN THE BUSH OF GHOSTS. I can't imagine a fan of Cale or of the vocal work of Eno (some who are exclusively ambient fans may feel differently) not almost instantly adoring this album.
Though a couple of songs go a bit darker than the others (for instance, the wonderful Cale number "Cordoba" or the slow, near-cowboy ballad "The River" that ends the album), for the most part these are bright, upbeat, fast tempo numbers. Almost every song on the disc is at least entertaining, but my three favorites are probably the aforementioned "Cordoba" and "Spinning Away" (which I got on a kick with and must have played thirty times in a row), as well as the song that kicks the album off, "Lay My Love." For those who are unfamiliar with both Brian Eno and John Cale, this provides a wonderful introduction to each, though the music as a whole is more typical of Eno's other work than Cale's. But for those unfamiliar with the disc but not the performers, this will be a wonderful surprise.

This collection of instrumentals offers a stark reminder of the sheer mind-boggling scope of David Bowie's sound and vision. Most of these 16 brooding soundscapes are plucked from Bowie's hugely influential 1977 albums, Low and Heroes. Taking his cue from Kraftwerk, Bowie enlisted ambient pioneer Brian Eno and decamped to Berlin. It's no exaggeration to say that the resulting albums were integral in defining the path of modern music. Throughout, there's a palpable sense of foreboding, perhaps best exemplified by "Sense of Doubt," a truly unsettling mesh of booming piano and spookily spiraling synths. That the Thin White Duke's Berlin material still dazzles is no surprise. However, it's the remarkable revelation--provided by a clutch of slightly more recent tracks--that he can still cut it that'll hearten disillusioned Bowie fans everywhere. --Chris KingCustomer Reviews:
another side to Bowie.......2007-06-04
"All Saints" is a collection of instrumental cuts, that weave in and out of your cortex like access to a morphine pump. Never loud or brash, it features primarily synthesizers and on the last track, full orchestration. In places the music sounds like Eno-esque synth; others feature a distinctively Oriental feel.
To describe music as hypnotic is a bit cliched these days, but there really isn't a better word to describe "All Saints". Especially on headphones, the trance is strong, and resistance is futile.
The only other instrumental CD in this league is the Church's Steve Kilbey's solo outing "Earthed", which is worth checking out too.

This isn't for everyone. But if you're a true fan of Bowie's musical vision then this is a worthy addition to your collection. Put the headphones on and be prepared for an awesome experience. Be forwarned - it gets a little freaky. But you already know that.
A good compilation.......2005-05-18
Those tracks alone justify purchasing a comp. that otherwise includes songs available on albums you probably already have.
The Best of Bowie's Instrumentals!!.......2003-09-18
This collection spans from the years 1977 to 1999. Most of the tracks included here are from the two-thirds of Bowie's "Berlin" album trilogy ("Low" and "Heroes", the third being "Lodger"). Additionally, there are three rare pieces ("Abdulmajid", "Crystal Japan" and the CDs title track) which were only previously available as bonus tracks when the Rykodisc label reissued the entire Bowie catalog in the early 1990s (The Rykodisc reissues are now out-of-print).
This CD as a whole demonstrates David Bowie's pioneering use of synthesizers and ambient soundscapes. A majority of these compositions were made in collaboration with ambient music specialist Brian Eno and display a unique combination of lush beauty, harsh experimentation and cinematic intensity. Any of these compositions could've easily been used as film music for it is highly visual and adventurous. The closing piece ("Some Are" from Philip Glass's "Low Symphony") is particularly cinematic with its use of a full symphonic orchestra creating a dynamic sense of drama.
"All Saints" is not only a must have for David Bowie fans but also for fans of instrumental music as well. Like his collaborator Brian Eno as well as the German-based bands Tangerine Dream, Cluster and Kraftwerk, David Bowie has also garnered himself as an innovator of ambient electronic music. This collection shows Bowie at his instrumental best and reveals the full scope of his serious musical and compositional side.
Putting things together.......2003-06-13
Bowie innovatively used the creative forces of Berlin better than most and many of the fruits of that labor are captured nicely in this work.
