Editorial Reviews
Perhaps you weren't convinced of the Verve's staying power until recently. Before the release of Urban Hymns, skeptics wondered if they could ever match the explosive power of their earlier dedications. In 1995, most critics dismissed their offerings of the time as vapid, romantic excursions. To their credit, the Verve have sustained their shadow rock legitimacy while introducing string arrangements, piano fills, and slide guitar. Nowhere are these stirring traits more obvious than in the epic single "Bitter Sweet Symphony." Laying it on thick throughout the rest of the album with painfully engaging ballads, the Verve have crafted their most accomplished album to date, proving the longevity of their cultural resonance. --Lucas Hilbert

What a shame.......2007-05-19
A great album and a correction.......2007-01-29
A very good album, containing such fantastic songs as "Sonnet", "Lucky Man" and my favourite, the closer, "Come On". I love the way this songs builds and builds and almost transports you to that "Mad Richard" place.
I don't think this album is stuck in its time - I think this album will be enjoyed and appreciated for many years to come.
A Brit-Pop Classic.......2007-01-13
The opener and world-wide hit "Bittersweet Symphony" is a great song built up around a string-loop based on the old Rolling Stones song "The Last Time". Jagger and Richards are also credited as songwriters, which I find very generous of the band, as you have to listen very carefully to notice any similarities to the old Stones song.
The other stand-outs on the album are mostly quiet songs with the acoustic guitar and Ashcroft's vocal in front.
The brilliant "Sonnet" belongs to this cathegory; as does the other hit-single off the album "The Drugs Don't Work" - beautiful and sad. "Lucky Man" is yet another example.
Slightly harder is "Space and Time" which is melodic and which has a great hook and chorus.
"Velvet Morning" and "Good Day" are other solid songs.
The rest of the album I tend to find slightly forgettable. Some songs simply go on for too long, while others just sound like unnecessasy fillers. Considering the long playingtime of the album (app. 70 minutes ), I think the album would have made a much stronger general impression if some of these tracks had been left out. A big shame if people lose interest before reaching "Lucky Man" and "Velvet Morning". Still a great album, though!!

Diversity is more than just a buzzword for Donnie McClurkin. As shown by his massive success both inside and outside the U.S., the right reverend from Long Island embraces many stylistic approaches (and languages) as he delivers his brand of gospel. It's never more evident than in Psalms, Hymns & Spiritual Songs, a McClurkin double-disc live worship celebration. Opening with Robin Mark's "Days of Elijah" and McClurkin's own "I Will Sing," a praise-and-worship motif sets the stage for later similar tracks like Michael W. Smith's "Agnus Dei" and the medley "Draw Me Close/I Am Thine Oh Lord." Backed by a 40-piece orchestra and a powerhouse choir, McClurkin closes the opening disc strongly in tandem with the legendary Richard Smallwood on the classic "Total Praise." The second disc is dedicated more to traditional gospel with tracks like "I Love To Praise Him" and "Jesus Medley." McClurkin livens up the fare with the "Language" medley, singing in English, Japanese, Russian, and Spanish, ending the string with Joann Rosario as they duet on "Saciame Senor Yo Se Que Estas Aqui." You shouldn't miss the bonus cut here as well with McClurkin and Kirk Franklin teaming up for a slick and pleasing cover of the 70's soul classic "Ooh Ooh Child." The offering is generous on Psalms, Hymns & Spiritual Songs and Pastor McClurkin holds nothing back in this fire-and-ice worship celebration. --Michael LyttleCustomer Reviews:

A former member of Teddy Riley's R&B supergroup, Blackstreet, Dave Hollister was recruited by the Def Squad after he decided to make a go of a solo career. Joining up with the Squad gives Hollister a certain amount of street cred, but it also has other benefits--such as getting Squad member Erick Sermon to produce three tracks and Redman to produce another (albeit the intro). With his set of pipes, though--high, pleading, and wrought with emotion--Hollister might not have needed the hook-up. He moves a little fast sometimes, as on "Round & Round," where the backing vocalist is "taking off your clothes" and asking to "sex you from head to toe" before the first verse even starts; on "Came in the Door Pimpin'," the implication is that he's not even willing to wait that long. There's also some sweet doo-wop, though it shows up only on a throw-away interlude ("Cheaterlude"). Overall, the songs don't always live up to Hollister's voice, but he's able to raise even the most mediocre material into something serviceable; hopefully, he won't always have to. --Randy SilverCustomer Reviews:
Ghetto Sugar.......2002-08-22
Powerful vocals, and raw lyrics express love and heartbreak.......2001-08-17
On his solo debut, Ghetto Hymns, former Blackstreet singer Dave Hollister seems comfort-able singing ballad R&B notes or ghetto hip-hop lyrics.
This album features gospel, pop and rap inspired tracks. Songs such as "I Can't Stay," a powerful ballad, "My Favorite Girl" and a slowed down r&B remake of the Michael McDonald classic "I Keep Forgetting" make this album music to remember.
Deep Down Raw.......2000-11-13
still time for improvement, but overall a pretty good effort.......2000-07-26
hollister, a former member of the rnb male quadrant blackstreet, spun solo after there 1994 self-titled effort, to make this album. featuring the smash singles "my favorite girl" & the overally explicit, but fabulous "babymammadramma", show that hollister, plans to stay around for a bit longer.
the rest of the album though really doesnt add up to the success of his singles. "i keep forgetting", "can't stay", & "my favorite girl" (remix) are really good tracks, and i like it.
the rest are just averagae songs, songs that i like, and some that i don't like but overall a really good effort. with just a little bit of improvement, i see this man going far.
TASTE AND SEE!.......2000-06-28
