A surprise hit in 2004 and 2005, this Atlanta-based threesome arrived on the scene at precisely the right time--when country trios (Dixie Chicks, Rascal Flatts, and to a lesser extent, Trick Pony and SheDaisy) had proved themselves in the marketplace. Like those acts, Sugarland trade on solid and sometimes intricate harmonies and a killer lead vocalist. In this case, the full-tilt Jennifer Nettles plays Natalie Maines to Kristen Hall and Kristian Bush's Emily and Martie. And while it would be lovely to hear another member of the trio out front occasionally, Nettles, a deep-dish Southerner who knows no one-syllable words ("air" is "aye-er"), is a commanding presence. Stylistically, the group mixes it up, from the folk-rock of Hall and Bush's backgrounds to the driving pop that dominates much of contemporary country radio; thematically, the songs largely revolve around restlessness, the need to escape restrictions and find one's self, and the faith that things will work out. "Baby Girl," the hit about an itinerant musician writing home for money and emotional connectedness, is but one of several surefire winners here, which include "Something More," a mid-tempo quest for a more meaningful life, and "Tennessee," in which a radio request line rescues true love. The quieter songs ("Fly Away," "Hello") are no less well written and affecting, even as the barnburning "Down in Mississippi (Up to No Good)," about housewife ennui and riverboat gambling, falls embarrassingly flat. Does this triad have staying power? Well, just as their name implies, they're a little too sweet to equal the Chicks' gravitas, but there's no denying they've got energy to burn. --Alanna NashCustomer Reviews:

The Hendrix influence is obvious, yet this is not a Jimi clone. Trower remains one of the most under-rated guitarists of his generation.
Two for One.......2006-11-04
Classic Album.......2006-09-27
It opens with the energetic Day of the Eagle and there's more energy with The Fool and Me and Little Bit of Sympathy. Balance this with the beautiful slow ballads In This Place and About To Begin, add the catchy Lady Love, the rumbling Too Rolling Stoned and the haunting title track and you have all the necessary ingredients for a classic album.
This package also includes the Robin Trower bands debut album Twice Removed From Yesterday. This contains a couple of weaker tracks, notably Ballerina, but also contains a couple of classics, in I Can't Wait Much Longer and Daydream, a personal favourite.
What more can I say! Well, after sampling the virtuoso guitar playing of one of Britain finest, have another listen, to someone who had one of the best voices in music, the late great James Dewar. You'll love it!

I was expecting at least some re-harmonization on these tunes but very much
straight from the fakebook kind changes. The horn lines were not too exciting.
Well....overall, very clean and straight.
Sophie Milman (GREAT).......2006-07-29
The visualization of a fantastic playful jazz angel on the other side of such a beautiful voice is not hurt by the reality that she is one. Her harmonic rythmic voice makes the heart happy just to listen to it and entertains the mind with frequent smooth variations that make other overcomplicated musicians just seem dull and nervous. She also has a great bunch of excellent jazz musicians that accompany her and they echo the mood perfectly. Great job Sophie Milman and "LINUS"!
Knock Out Debut.......2006-07-23
The Differences Between Sophie and Diana.......2006-07-16
It didn't take me long to get past the hype. Sophie Milman, like Diana Krall, is an attractive blonde singer who sings standards in a jazzy style. And like Ms. Krall, she calls Canada home (although Ms. Milman was born in the U.S.S.R., and emigrated to Canada by way of Israel as a teenager).
There the similarities end. Actually, Ms. Milman has a rounder, fuller singing voice than Ms. Krall, although Sophie does have a tendency to scoop and croon a lot. But she also has a tight, tremelo vibrato which comes out when she's singing a loud note in her chest voice, and I like it.
But here's the thing: when Mme. Krall hit the scene 10 years ago, there weren't that many attractive standard-singing young jazz chanteusses. She came along at the right time. Now, the scene is saturated with them.
And as a result, if that's how you're making your mark, you have to do something to distinguish yourself from the rest of the pack. For example, you could mix some killer songs of your own with the standards. (e.g., Rene Marie, Jackie Allen or Erin Bode) Or, you could mix a fair number of well-done European art songs with the standards. (e.g., Ilona Knopfler, Jackie Ryan or fellow countryman, Madeleine Peyroux). Or, you could mix in some nods to more current fare, so as to gain the interest of baby-boomers and gen-x'ers. (e.g., Karrin Allyson, Lizz Wright, Janis Siegel or Lea DeLaria). Or, you could become proficient on an instrument in addition to voice (e.g., Ms. Krall, Dena DeRose, Patricia Barber, or Luciana Souza).
Or, you could do the standards in truly unique ways never attempted before. (e.g., Tierney Sutton, Cheryl Bentyne or Cassandra Wilson--back when Ms. Wilson did standards, that is.) These standards are pretty standard. In fact, outside of the jazzy read of "I Feel Pretty" and the "Goldfingerish" variations on "My Heart Belongs to Daddy," there's nothing here that especially piques my interest.
It seems that most jazz singers start with an album of standards. The really talented ones figure out where to grow from there. All of the above-mentioned singers have grown since their beginnings. Hopefully, that will be true of Sophie Milman as well. RC
Great debut.......2006-03-30
She even makes the three least interesting songs--"I Feel Pretty," "Ochi Cherney," and "This Time of the Year"--listenable with her easy-swinging style. The band is great and provides smooth accompaniment.
I look forward to her future releases.

Siouxsie & the Banshees are quite possibly the only first-generation "punk" band to last long enough to have hit collections that chronicle three decades. Though initially inspired by the Sex Pistols, the Banshees were always more about arty romanticism than street aggression. This second collection of hits begins in 1982, after their first flash of fame and creativity had concluded. These tunes then represent the Banshees' attempt at adapting to the difficult musical landscape of the 1980s. While they were capable of powerfully catchy tunes of their own ("Cities in Dust" off Tinderbox being a prime example), several covers featured here make the case for them as adept interpreters. Iggy Pop's "The Passenger," the Beatles' "Dear Prudence," and Bob Dylan and Rick Danko's "This Wheel's on Fire" are all given the gothic treatment. --Rob O'ConnorAlbum Description

Incomplete and out of date, but still a nice introduction to the band.......2007-04-17
What's more, the rest of the singles are missing, those that preceed this collection (found, also in possibly incomplete form on Once Upon a Time - Mittageisen?) and those that came after it. 5 star screamers will shout down this review because objective criticism doesn't drive sales as well as hype, but this collection should be retired and replaced with a complete set that has every single in its original form, including Song from the Edge of the World, whether Siouxsie has a grudge with its producer or not. Why the recent, even more incomplete, set includes only the Columbus Mix version is beyond me. The original is still unavailable on CD.
I could do without the sound effects at the end of Fireworks. There is a version of that song without them, but I'm not sure whether it was the version that was released as the main single or not. This disc is the only CD available with Fireworks as well as the odd two I mentioned at the beginning of the review. It's nice to hear Siouxsie live, but a lone live track stuck in the midst of studio set is bizarre.
This review is not focused mainly on the quality of the songs, as that's not the real issue. This very old collection is simply out of date. There are many singles that came after it that are missing, and singles that came prior to it that are missing. The missing Song from the Edge and normal versions of Fear and Last Beat also are big strikes against. I would love to give 5 stars and a glowing review to a new set that's complete.
Here's a list of missing stuff:
Every single prior to this collection, available on the short playing Once Upon a Time (except for Mittageisen)
Song From the Edge of the World
The Last Beat of My Heart (studio)
Fear of the Unknown (normal single/album version)
O Baby
Stargazer
New Skin* (not really a single, but was on the Showgirls soundtrack)
Excellent CD by an Immortal Band.......2006-12-18
1. Fireworks- This fabulous track is like listening to its namesake; sparkling, explosive, and deeply sensual.
2. Slowdive- I have no clue what the title means, but that is rendered irrevelent when you listen to this head-turning, string touched masterpiece.
3. Melt!- Listening to Siouxsie Sioux howl and pur sexy lines like "handcuffed in lace, blood, and sperm" whilist a lush orchestra and mandolin play, it makes me wish that more female artists would make this kind of music.
4. Dear Prudence- At first I did not like this song because I thought that it was murky and dull. But, over time, I warmed up to it and found that it was a warm, pretty cover of a classic song.
5. Swimming Horses- This song is dumbly underrated because it is a very strange, edgy, psychedelic song. It has a staccato piano melody and scritchy-scratchy gutair similar to that of the classic Banshees hit "Israel".
6. Dazzle- I have tried and tried, but I still haven't found a song today as powerful, as moving, or as beautiful as this orchestral piece of gothic rock. It is a soaring rock song with Sioux proving herself as a beautiful singer, and the band does their great musical stuff.
7. Overground- This song is a remake of a track from the Banshees' debut album "The Scream". It is a pulsating, charging song. The only problem is that Sioux sings in a voice that I usually asccociate with a person complaining about burning dinner.
8. Cities in Dust- This song is what gave Siouxsie and the Banshees their first big hit in the U.S., which this classic dance-pop song diserves. It starts out with the sound of bubbling lava and bell-like synths, and then explodes into a anxious firecracker of a song.
9. Candyman- This dizzying punk-rocker must have been very personal for Sioux, seeing as it is about sexual abuse against children, and Sioux herself was sexually assaulted when she was only 9 years old. What a great song.
10. This Wheel's On Fire- This cover of a Bob Dylan penned classic is a shiny pop-rocker of a song. The best part of this track is a true Banshees touch: it is accompanied by orchestral strings that remind of a Japanese movie. Even better than the original.
11. The Passenger- You will probably look at me like I'm an alien when I tell you that I have never heard the original song. But I can assure that only good songs are worthy for the Banshees to cover. This song is a spirited magic-carpet ride that takes you along and never lets go.
12. Peek-a-Boo- I can't think of anyone who can cover this song and make it as good as this giddy hit single. The bizarre instrumentation is the result of the percussion in the song being played backwards. Siouxsie wails her typically cryptic lyrics while the choppy percussion stomps along. And where on Earth did they get that accordion?!
13. The Killing Jar- This is an accidental low point of this collection. The classic album version, with pummling percussion and purring cellos, is sorely missed here. Instead we get a fun but dull remix that was the single version. It is still a great song either way.
14. The Last Beat of my Heart- An already beautiful song made even more beautiful by the live version that is played here. The only dissapointment is that Siouxsie's singing always sounds so strained and screechy live, and I think she should sing with the beautiful restraint as in the original version.
15. Kiss Them For Me- Siouxsie and the Banshees' biggest hit on the Hot 100 is a pure pop song. Even so, the eccentric Banhsees touch is present, with exotic East Indian instrumenation and cryptic lyrics about the grisly car crash that took blonde bombshell Jayne Mansfield's life.
16. Shadowtime- Around this time, the Banshees were international pop stars, and during that time this suprisingly weak single was churned out. It has a nice melody, I guess, but it is so commercial sounding, and Siouxsie's big voice is unfortunetly strained.
17. Fear (Of the Unknown)- While the remix that is present is too synthy, this wailing, unbashedly poppy song is one of the Banshees' most enjoyable in a long, long time. Siouxsie also looks like Emma Peel in the video.
18. Face to Face- No wonder it was featured in goth king Tim Burton's Batman Returns. This smoky, sexy torch song features strings, light percussion, and Siouxsie being, well, Siouxsie! This is, however, the last single they made that was actually worth a listen.
As you can see, Siouxsie and the Banshees lasted long enough for two singles collections, and still have a place in my pantheon of favorite musicians.

Great CD.......2006-08-06
Simply the Best.......2005-06-29
In a compilation of songs like this you're always going to have tracks that you prefer over others, but the majority of the renditions in this CD are great. This is simply one of the best collections of Sondheim out there. You get interpretations that span from "classical" (Green Finch), to bordering on insane (Anything Twice). This is to demonstrate how versatile this composer really is.
In my opinion, some of the best renditions are "Not a Day Goes By," "Anyone Can Whistle", "Girls Upstairs Medley," "Losing My Mind/Drive a Person Crazy," and "Weekend inthe Country." Makes me wish I had been there to witness it first hand.
If you love Sondheim and enjoy hearing Broadway performers, get this CD. A great recording.
Inconsistent, but mostly excellent.......2004-03-21
"Celebration" is not strong enough a word.......2003-04-30
I have been a major Sondheim fan for quite some time, and I finally obtained a copy of this album. I was blown away by the excellent cast and phenomenal selection of music. It is obvious how much work went into this production, considering that this is the live recording of a one time show, and it's flawless. The songs cover all of his shows with the exception of "Passion," which was released 3 years after this show. Also, the shows for which he wrote only lyrics are ommited, like West Side Story, Gypsy, etc. Thus, you can find material from A Funny Thing Happened on the Way to the Forum, Anyone can Whistle, Company, Follies, A Little Night Music, Pacific Overtures, Sweeney Todd: The Demon Barber of Fleet Street, Merrily we Roll Along, Sunday in the Park with George, Into the Woods, and Assassins.
There are two striking things about this CD (besides the music and performers themselves). First of all, some of the songs are completely stylistically reworked. The most obvious are "Good Thing Going" and "I Never do Anything Twice." Both are traditionally very ballady with a piano accompaniment, but here they have been redone as jazzy tunes. The result is excellent. Such reworkings demonstrate that Sondheim writes music for virtually any style, and in these cases, across several styles. It's a great example of his variety. The other interesting thing is how many songs have overlapping melodies of songs from different shows. Case in point, "Our Time" and "No one is Alone" are sung seperately by the Harlem Boys Choir and Betty Buckley (the original Grizabella in Webber's atrocious "CATS," although Buckley was excellent) respectively, and then combined. Putting these two songs together offer different meanings to each, and the music is only enhanced. Another example, the trio of "Waiting for the Girls Upstairs," "Love, I Hear," and "Live Alone and Like It" are sung in that order, and then the latter two are combined. Again, the meanings of the songs change, this time in an almost narrative style, and offering different takes on love in the same montage. Lastly (at least for this review, there are more), Dorothy Laudon's (the original Ms. Hannigan in Annie) combination of "Losing my Mind" and "You Could Drive a Person Crazy" is brilliant. Those who are familiar with these songs will wonder how exactly they fit, but trust me, they do. She swtiches back and forth between melodies to create a number that starts poignant and beautiful, and soon moves to become uproariously funny. Both the song reworkings and overlapping melodies of unrelated songs are all for the better.
I recommend this recording to anyone wanting to get better acquainted with some of Sondheim's best work, or those already familiar who want to hear a tour de force of phenomenal music. It has been said that Sondheim is a masterful lyricist (which he is), but lacks real talent for music. This CD is the final proof that such critics are wrong. His music may take a few listenings to get into, contrary to Webber or Wildhorn, but unlike those two, he doesn't cater to the audience. He challenges them to think outside of traditional musical theater in a glorious repertoise of shows that reach for a smarter, more sophisticated form.
A maginificent evening, a magnificent album.......2001-12-16
This wonderful double CD shows off the best and brightest of the musical theatre composer and it is, as one person put it, "an embarassment of riches." With songs from his finest works done in amazing arrangements (listen to that harmony in "We Had a Good Thing Going"!) combined with fabulous performers this is a Sondheim lovers delight.
My favorite song is, without a doubt, Dorothy Louden and her wonderful medley of "Losing My Mind" into "You Could Drive a Person Crazy" followed very closely by the recently departed Madeline Kahn singing "Getting Married Today."

80S HARD ROCK AT IT'S BEST!.......2007-05-28
Great White highlight.......2006-08-21
Certainly this ablum is a hybrid between 70's stoner rock and third generation Stonesy hard rock. The tone is set by the opener Move It with it's intro of truck brackes or somesuch putting you instantly on notice that this is going to be a highway cruiser of an album. And in terms of that, tunes such as Move It, Heart the Hunter, Hiway Nights and Mista bone are top notch, totally at home on the radio or jukebox of roadhouses across middle america. Dude, If I ever find myself touring the US by road I'm gonna take this album with me. It would be mandatory.
On the wider appeal front this album runs into problems. A clutch of the songs here are pretty middling stuff like The Angel Song, House of Broken Love and She Only are all pretty dire. Baby On Fire is fairly numbskull but is saved by it's carefree attitude and brisk pace. The covers are suitably chosen and attacked with fun in mind but when three of your eleven tracks are covers it's starting to get indicative of a shallow creative well. Or laziness. And when one of them is a sort of afterthought novelty track it doesn't help, even if it is genuinely amusing.
In a strange way this album has a number of cool cuts but always leaves the listener feeling as if the total is less than the sum of it's parts. It just doesn't hang together. Still, a serious driving album.
Great White's Best Album.......2005-11-15
It was with this record, though, that the band came into their own. It has their biggest selling single, the massively huge cover of Ian Hunter's "Once Bitten, Twice Shy", which is okay. That's not why I like the record. Here's a track by track breakdown of why I do:
1. Move It: Okay, so maybe the lyrics are a little dated and hokey, but this rocks and the sentiment is there..."let's get this mutha on!" Great Mark Kendall guitar solo(9/10)
2. Heart The Hunter: Dokken did something very much like this, and they did it better--"The Hunter" is one of Dokken's best songs...but this is not one of Great White's. It's not a cover, just thematically linked (6/10)
3. Hiway Nights: Funny how they mispelled the first word but not the second; I'da thought "Nites" was in order. Weird mystical meditation on driving ("To this eagle I belong"!?!?) but probably my favorite song on the record. Kendall's song is lame (and that's rare), but the relentless double-bass drum pounding never lets up (10/10)
4. The Angel Song: Thematically similar to Poison's "Fallen Angel", but much more melodic; a sad piano ballad. Also echoes The Kink's "Celluloid Heroes" slightly. Great video, cityscapes at night, though it's hard to tell that Michael Lardie is playing piano at first. Good Kendall solo (10/10)
5. Mista Bone: I didn't like this song when it first came out because it was too over the top. Now I love it. The lyrics are so unbelievably immature that you have to check them out; "innuendo" is no longer an appropriate term. Yet it really is an awesome groove, Tony Montana's bass is utterly crisp; during the verses it's like Kendall and the rhythm section are playing two different songs, but it's brilliant. (11/10)
6. Baby's On Fire: A decent, if cliched rocker, lyrics are a little boring. Reminiscent of Sammy Hagar (9/10)
7. House Of Broken Love: Yeah, man. Awesomely great total downer of a rock song, one of their best. Musically, it's actually somewhat similar to the Police's "King of Pain", but instead of the lyrics following the chords closely, Russell's voice weaves over them in his bluesy style. One problem: the intro solo is WAY too long on the album version (1:30 or so); I actually prefer the video version where it's truncated. But nevertheless (10/10)
8. She Only: Pretty, somber acoustic ballad, very dated sounding with constant arpeggios, but great sentiment and the lyrics are decent (9/10)
9. Once Bitten, Twice Shy: Can't argue with the sales figures, though this is one of my least favorite songs on the record. It's a good, solid rockin' tune (9/10)
You can tell that the success of this song transformed their style somewhat...just listen to the opening track of their next record (_Hooked_) and it's basically part II of this song. That feel carries throughout Hooked and it's kind of disappointing. Compare _...Twice Shy_'s "The Angel Song" to _Hooked_'s "Lovin' Kind"...both are piano ballads, but whereas the former is really in that dark '80s genre, the latter is an attempt to do a more mainstream rock sound...and apologies if you like it, I think "Lovin' Kind" is pretty bad: mundane, boring, bland, blah. "The Angel Song" fills up empty spaces at midnight, "Lovin' Kind" makes more sense around lunchtime. Sorry, I'm a midnight kind of guy, even in my 30s. There are a few good tracks on _Hooked_ ("Desert Moon", "Heartbreaker") but mostly it took a turn for the worst.
Great White are, as every other review says, 'unfairly' lumped in with Poison, Dokken, and so. But you have to remember that back in the day, that's how they were marketed. I think their stuff stands far beyond their peers...and I say this as someone once addicted to Dokken/Lynch Mob, I recognize George Lynch's talent for shredding and respect it greatly. But Dokken never achieved the timelessness of Great White because they were not as solid of a band; Don's voice was strident and his melodic approach stale; Jeff never hit any grinding grooves like "Mista Bone", and the band always seemed like they were about four individuals and not a unit.
Great White was a band, a band with a great singer (who yes, bears more than a passing resemblance to Robert Plant). Mark Kendall was capable enough a shredder, but on reflection, a much more interesting rhythm player than I had given him credit for. Overall the band is more musically sophisticated and bluesy than any of their contemporaries, but I hate to tell you this, and you're going to be mad: they were a Hair Band, and then with "Once Bitten, Twice Shy" they made a bid for more mainstream legitimacy, which is why I don't like most of _Hooked_. I've seen them live ('96 or so), and I've seen Dokken, and Poison. All of them have themes and approaches in common, but many stylistic differences (Poison is pure major-chord fluff, Dokken stays in minor keys with modal solos; GW is bluesy).
There were fast cars, objectification of women, cityscapes, and a lot of talk about "rockin'". There were videos with pretty girls, crazy guitar solos, excessive stage lights. That's Hair Metal or Glam as we used to call it. I was there, I know. I love all that, and I think they went wrong when they turned away from it, though they recoved a little bit on _Psycho City_. _Can't Get There From Here_ is a great rock record from them, but totally different, more like what they were going for with _Hooked_. I love Great White, their music has gotten me through some trying times. You need to see the videos to really understand this band in context.
I would also like to take the time to recommend Icon's "Right Between the Eyes" (1989, Atlantic/Megaforce) if you like this record...good luck finding a copy, though....

This Album Rocks,.......2004-02-05
I never compared Great White to total glam bands like Poison or Warrant. These guys wore jeans and leather jackets too. GWs sound was more mature if you ask me, more piano and extended guitar riffs with arrangements that were more consistent with 70's style than the all out glam sound.
This CD is worth buying. I would compare Great White more with Tesla than Poison or Warrant. No, its not as good as the first album "once bitten". Crank "House of Broken Love" one time and you'll be captured "if you don't wanna lose your lovin' use it constantly, if theres gonna be lies, suspicious eyes, then baby, baby set me free!" This CD stands on its own no problem.
Buy it for sure.
