A musical treasure-box.......2006-09-10
The First, Second, Third and Fourth Bookes of Songes, A Musicall Banquet, the keyboard transcriptions, all the lute music, consort music are here and virtually everything else written or supposedly written by John Dowland. Anthony Rooley and The Consort of Musicke perform this music with style and feeling throughout. This 12 CD set is something of a monument to the ensemble - I only wish they'd finished their collection of Monteverdi madrigals, which was equally good (La Venexiana are currently doing a magnificent job of recording all Monteverdi's books of madrigals for the GLOSSA label).
This is an expensive set, however, you will probably never need to buy another John Dowland CD again after buying and listening to this collection.
I bought this CD set on a mild Summer evening of 1998 and listened to it while sitting in my sun room - which a glorious orange sunset in progress, and a glass of wine. It brought back so many memories.
a beautiful journey into melancholy.......2001-06-15
Dowland, a contemporary of Shakespeare, discovered that meditating on a sad theme is, at the same time, a way of discovering a special beauty that we tend to avoid (maybe because of the "tragic" heritage of the Romantics). So, in the end, meditating on sadness is an uplifting experience! This box set is a journey into melancholy that includes songs, chamber music, pieces for lute, some rare sacred music and -as a highlight- Dowland's beautiful collection of seven pieces for viola which he called "Lachrimae" (Tears).

Dawn Upshaw graces us with a template of nocturnal delights. The various musical styles range from Monteverdi to Crumb, keeping the listener from ever getting too comfortable. Her interprations of Warlock's haunting "Sleep" and Schwartner's "Black Anemones" are well- crafted and bewitching, but her usually-stellar musical sense is misguided in a disappointing "Bachianas Brasileiras No. 5" by Villa- Lobos. She sings youthfully and without vocal abandon, and the middle section is void of passion. Her lovely light voice sometimes treads dangerously on girlishness; it's most satisfying when exhibiting its full meaty radiance. Upshaw's pleasurable artistry creates a dreamy recording. --Barbara Eisner BayerCustomer Reviews:
A good example of Upshaw's adventurous programming.......2006-08-24
Better than average Upshaw recording. Entertaining.......2006-04-29
This may not be the best first album for someone new to Upshaw (See 'Dawn Upsahw, Soprano), but if you like her, it should definitely be on your list.
Best Upshaw Recording.......2004-05-04
Making Connections.......2002-03-17
Handel's "Gentle Morpheus" is sung with gentle restraint, bringing out the subtle nuances so prevalent in Handel's vocal works. Upshaw has a clear understanding of early music performance and does not seek to "overinterpret" the music. Likewise, her performance of the newer pieces are equally sensitive. Although her diction is a bit obtrusive in the verse of Villa-Lobos Bachianas Brasileiras No. 5, her vocalise is so moving, particularly at the end. Her performance of the Crumb is worthy of Jan de Gaetani, and other top-notch performers of Crumb's music.
The right selections for the right voice.......2001-12-01
is well suited to Upshaw's silver toned voice, which expresses the fantasy and other worldliness of the compositions without losing the idea that the human soul can find fantastic strangeness and blessed comfort in each night of its existence.
By the way, and most significantly: the music is beautiful beyond words.

Customer Reviews:
Very Good Intro to American Art Songs.......2006-04-02
This makes it especially odd that there are no Stephen Foster songs on this album. I take this to be an effort on the part of the artist and her producers to focus on less familiar material and thereby educate us about Jake Heggie, Lee Hoiby, John Duke, Richard Hundley, Lora Aborn, John Jacob Niles, Robert Abramson and Charles Naginski and thereby concentrating on 20th century composers joining the better known Charles Ives, Samuel Barber, and Aaron Copeland.
Larmone is not my favorite mezzo and, like another reviewer, have found her doing things I did not totally enjoy, but it seems as if the material in this album fits her to a Tee. It makes me wish she would do a Stephen Foster album.
Recommended.
Excellent recording, lots of photos, partial texts........2005-06-09
Terrific Songs, Great Artistry.......2000-09-25
What earns her five stars, however, is her artistry. She brings an arrestingly broad range of responses to this music. Like the nation that produced them, American songs are highly diverse, drawing from folk, European, religious, and pop idioms, to name just a few. Larmore is in full command of this diversity and alters her tone and delivery to bring each number home. Furthermore, she seems really to have read and thought about the texts. Every word counts. When the music can handle it, she lays it on thick and "acts" her way through the song, such as in Copland's "Ching a Ring" or Heggie's "Barb'ry Allen." But she wisely knows when to to hold back and let the melody carry the point, as in Barber's famous "Sure on this Shining Night" or Ives's "My Native Land." (Many accomplished Lieder singers never learn this lesson.) Once or twice she's a little off target (the first track, unfortunately), but this disc gave me a new respect for her art.
It helps that she's chosen such a fascinating group of songs. The Copland and Barber are well known, and recently Heggie is on everyone's lips, but much of the rest rarely makes it to disc. I particularly liked the gorgeous Aborn numbers, with their wistful sentimentality, and the quirky Duke pieces. Hundley's "Astronomers" is a haunting, unforgettable piece. Her inclusion of three Ives songs reminds us that it's time singers of her caliber returned to his oeuvre. Many of her choices stress different kinds of longing, that most American of emotions, but there's enough of a variety to prevent sameness. She also shines in several "patter songs," delivered with lightning wit. Palloc performs his role admirably.
I enthusiastically recommend this disc. Brava Jennifer!

Customer Reviews:
Watch Jussi Grow!.......2001-08-14
I was going to skip "Ack Värmeland", having a none too pleasant familiarity with it years ago when I lived in a predominantly Swedish community in northern Minnesota. I heard it often at potato sausage and lutefisk suppers sung by Arne Bengtson (with accordian accompaniment supplied by the same Arne Bengtson). He pronounced it "Farmland" and I assume he was singing it to the 80 acres of sand and swamp he owned out east of town.
However, as I reached out to press the skip button, Jussi lovingly caressed the notes of "Ack Värmeland, du sköna," and I was transfixed. By the time he got to the 11th track, "Land, du Välsignade", I was ready to convert to Swedish.
"Adelaïda" is also on this disc, track 17, his 1939 version. By this time he was a ripe old 28-years. I have heard of later versions done with less slavish attention to Beethoven's instructions. Regrettably, I never heard them so I cannot compare, but perhaps it is not a bad thing to follow the instructions of someone like Beethoven. This interpretation is full, passionate, and flawless to my critical ear.
As is "Frühlingsglaube", track 19. The trouble with "Frühlingsglaube" is that it is too short. I reach for "repeat" when I hear Harry Ebert strike the first notes.
Many of these performances appear on other discs, so you might want to go through the play list to see if this might be repetitious. However, it is a thorough list set in a logical order that makes the entire listening period greatly satisfying. Total playing time is 77.36. I listened to this with a friend shortly after I got it. When it finished playing she looked up and said, "Is that all?"
