The roughest, hardest, rarest and best of Ike and Tina!.......2004-01-28
What we have on here is the wild and funky hard soul stuff, albeit with a touch of psychedelic funk-rock. For me this is what I had hoped that they had recorded. Most tracks I'd heard by them sounded a bit dull, or uninspired compared to Bold Soul Sister and a handful of the tracks on the best ofs.
These tracks sound pretty rough, even for the time, and would dfinitely benefit from remastering, to bring out the brightness of the drums and tighten the bass. But then again that garage band sound is part of the charm. I mean, Tinas voice is at least as rough as the recordings!
Best track on here is, for me, The Game Of Love. I wish that heavy soul sound had been pursued a bit more. Theres shades of Ann Peebles or Ann Sexton on it.
Quite a bit of over eager 'fozzie bear' style guitar (Wacka Wacka!) but Ike's playing is great, punctuated with some firey R and B/Blues style licks.
All in all, my favourite recordings by the band and in some ways the most cohesive re-release yet by Ike and Tina.
Dont be put off by the fact that Tina's 80's to recent output is so sterile, or the fact that Tina is so famous. This is the absolute antithesis of that sound. If you want hard soul, raw funk and rocking tunes then this is where to start!
The Best of the Forgotten Classics.......2002-10-23
The disc opens with the ever funky "Funkier Than a Mosquitas Tweeter" which was penned by Tina's sister Alline. Was she talking about Ike? :) Tina's wildly uplifting reading of the track blows Nina Simone's bastardized rendition out of the water. The disc continues on with funk and soul drenched songs such as "What You Don't See" and "Baby, What You Want Me To Do" which would make Sly Stone proud. Soul, always a component of every Turner record turns up more predominately on cuts such as "Game of Love", "Up On the Roof (from the 'Let Me Touch Your Mind' LP) and "Whole Lotta Love" which was an R&B hit for Tina alone in 1975. And though many think Ike to be the sole svengali and mastermind behind the revue, Tina also made her writing attempts. You would be remiss to neglect to mention "Nutbush City Limits" (not on the disc), but she had other fine moments. "The Chopper" sits right alongside 'Nutbush' and other Tina tunes such as 'Sexy Ida' and 'Help Him'. The showstopper of this disc, however, is the addition of a sexy, soulful song from the Turner's 1969 LP 'Come Together' entitled, "Doin' It". Tina's raunchiness is restrained, but her sexual energy explodes over the track as Ike and company pander to her every desire to "change the groove". This is Aaliyah's "Rock the Boat" 32 years earlier.
In all, this disc has been over 26 years in the making. It's a pleasure to know that these classics are now available to hear without the cracks, pops and hisses of vinyl. The original 'Bold Soul Sister' and her erstwhile husband were indeed as funky as the title of this album suggests.

Screamin' Jay Hawkins is best known for leaping out of a coffin to begin his '50s stage show and for "I Put a Spell on You," an R&B plaint transformed into an excessive masterwork by (it's said) a case of wine that appeared at the session. This definitive collection of Hawkins's work for the OKeh label includes the unedited version of "Spell" along with other one-of-a-kind effusions such as "Little Demon," "Yellow Coat," and his attacks on the likes of "You Made Me Love You," "Temptation," and "Take Me Back to My Boots and Saddle." Truly an artist who stands for something. --Rickey WrightCustomer Reviews:

Yet, who was an inconsistent recording artist? Same answer. I prefer "Cow Fingers and Mosquito Pie" over "VooDoo Jive" The best of..." but either album will do if you only own one Sreamin Jay record. Yes, the classic "I put a spell on you" is here, and for a hilarious contrast play it back to back with Brian Ferry's version. But this album also offers "Frenzy" "Little Demon" and "Alligator Wine." Invite over that crazy tang, light the votive candles, get out the MD 20/20, and put this record on for some freaky circus action.

Out of Control........2004-10-14
The first song, "Poison Eggs" is one of the best Isis songs there is. It starts off with a very minimal melodic melody, slowly adds percussion and a strange radar-like noise for a while, slowly progresses, until the ultra-heavy guitar riffing chaos appears, and the enraged mosquito-king vocals erupt, shaking the hive to bits. These vocals are really rough, just like the music, but this song is great. It becomes even more frantic towards the end, and finally stops abruptly with a unique distorted radio frequency noise for a few seconds.
"Life Under the Swatter" has extremely fast riffing, as the mosquitoes dodge the furious exterminators and swarm around him and eat him alive. But if you look deeper you can still hear the subtle melodies and percussion that would later develop more into Isis' sound.
"Hive Destruction" starts off with a terrifying, yet softer melody and then guitars suddenly rip through it for an even more frightening sound. "Relocation Swarm" starts with a suspenseful percussion and then contains strange, close-by sounding vocals and samples that are adrenaline-pumping torture to the ears. This song really drags on after a while and after 7 minutes (it's almost 12 minutes long) it is just samples of screaming and droning guitar noises, this is why I gave it 4 stars.
If you're new to Isis, this is probably a BAD introduction to them. You might like their heavier side compared to their newer full-lengths, but in that case, you'll only really like this and the Red Sea, both 20-something minute EPs. Like I said already, if you already have their newer albums, this is great also but obviously very different. Isis have only begun to showcase their true aesthetic innovation.
PANOPTICON. October 19th 2004. It's right around the corner now and I have a feeling this will be their best album yet.
Isis just rule.......2003-08-18
Buy everything by Isis if ya like this.. especially 'Oceanic'. Not a song by them lacks in any way. In 'Oceanic' you see what Isis have become... as good as this 1998 EP is, through the last years Isis truely have evolved into something undefinable and beautiful and still super heavy!! Check out 'Oceanic' then 'Celestial' by Isis after you get this and rock on Isis...
Evil translated through music.......2003-05-05
Well...........2002-12-08
Though this is actually remixed from the original release of this CD, I can guarantee that you will NEVER hear guitars heavier than on this record. EVER.
If you have any of Isis' later stuff, this is quite a bit different; though people liken this to Neurosis, the vocals are more in the realm of grindcore (and much different than on Celestial or Oceanic), and the guitars are 10x heavier.
Did I mention this is the heaviest CD you'll ever hear?
I give it 4 out of 5 because, well, it's pretty one-dimensional and the songwriting isn't the greatest. Poison Eggs and Hive Destruction are pretty memorable, but the rest of the CD drones almost too much even for my tastes.

Mosquito Dream is a challenging, brilliant update on guitar-based ambient sound. The disc concerns itself mostly with the ebb and flow of humming, nearly distorted waves of droning sound. It's far colder in tone than, say, the music of Rafael Toral, but it's neither too cerebral nor overbearingly bleak. The record was made, according to the label, in the following manner: "Plotkin recorded a guitar track; Gutzeit destroyed it and rebuilt it. Gutzeit used handmade instruments (an upright 18-string steel "bass" strung with piano wire and a 3-string instrument with 100-foot piano wires), a boom box, a stereo, and a 4-track tape deck to create 5 different tracks. Plotkin remixed those tracks and sent Gutzeit 40 minutes of music." It's a slowly evolving record; very little seems to happen on the first track--it just sounds like a succession of highly processed feedback hums. Halfway through track two, "Sand Scroll," things get really interesting and generally stay that way for the rest of the album. It's hard to say whether the record is constructed as such, or if it just takes about 10 minutes for one's ears to get used to its subterranean charms. --Mike McGonigalCustomer Reviews:
File Under Drones.......2007-05-23
This album should not be missed by all the fans
of ambient drone out there. While not a work of
'genius,' Mosquito Dreams IS an album one can
listen to again and again and again, imo.
I've listened to the work of James Plotkin (I'm
not familiar with Brent Gutzeit, but he seems to
be a major factor in this album)on and off for
many years, particularly the Collapse album (not
a fan of 'noise' in general). And while I like
Collapse, I find Mosquito Dreams is more 'mellow'
and accessible for me personally; its not really
a 'dark' piece, but offers a pleasing alien
soundscape nonetheless.
Its also well suited as a Kranky label release, and
fans of Stars of the Lid in particular will like
Mosquito, as it is a layered work of various processed
strings. Those who remeber A Small Good Thing
may also be reminded, at times, of their first album.
Mosquito is a very quiet, unassuming work that is
recommeded for those wanting consistency on an album.
I can't say that there are any tracks
that especially stand out, but there aren't any
I don't like either. If I don't seem overly
enthused, don't get me wrong - its a worthwhile
addition to the drone genre.

Some Goth Goodness Remains . . ........2006-03-08
While some of the covers on this album are lackluster, most of them retain the same dark sound as the originals - particularly 'Mosquito Song' (which had strings in it to begin with) and 'The Sky is Falling'. The latter is, in my opinion, the best on the entire album. It's so incredibly lush and vacant at the same time. i'm not incredibly wild about the "atmospheric" guitar stylings on some of these tracks, and unlike other cover albums, some follow the original arrangements too closely. Still, I like albums that are edgy, and I think that some of this works. Buy it, if only to listen and love a couple of tracks and pass it along.

Tracks:

Album Description
2005 two CD release from this Australian experimental Jazz trio (piano, bass and drum). This time out, The Necks slightly alter their musical formula, presenting two entirely new 60+ minute tracks instead of the usual one disc release. Each CD contains one that begins with a simple, yet melodic, idea and then builds upon it for the next hour, creating a sonic landscape that enchants the listener as it unfolds, challenging the heart, mind and soul of Rock and Jazz music. Although the band have won numerous Jazz awards in their homeland, they are one of the few bands of that genre that have been wholeheartedly embraced by Rock audiences around the world. Many critics have even compared The Necks to original Krautrock bands like Can. Features 'Mosquito' and 'See Through'. Fish Of Milk.Customer Reviews:
Post-Jazz Ambience (4/5).......2005-03-15
Nonetheless, I have a feeling that the critical acclaim of their last few albums has slowly started to diminish this oversight. They're latest offering, which is a double-disc set called Mosquito / See Through, should fit in nicely with the rest of their catalog and continue to gather new supporters. They will simultaneously keep those existing fans happy since their basic concept has not been too heavily deviated upon. In the same fashion as the rest of their work, these two songs are slightly over an hour long in duration. And like a Robert Ryman painting, The Necks present them in very minimal fashion.
First in line, "Mosquito" is a hypnotic song that moves along at a leisurely pace until slight variations are allowed to flourish from within. Reflective piano is the highlight of this song, but there are gentle pulses of bass, a sometimes non-existent ride cymbal, and hanging wood chimes to accompany it. The inexorable subtlety of Abraham's piano is enough to lull you into a mindless state of sedation. Only during Talk Talk's best moments have I heard the piano sound so warm and charming.
"See Through" is the next long piece. Unlike its predecessor, it has oddly been broken up into several segments. During certain moments there is at least a one-minute gap of complete silence before we are reintroduced to the song again. That aside, it's unquestionably the more interesting of the two songs. Where "Mosquito" focuses on lighter situations, "See Through" is a much darker and complex affair. The sound of jazz is almost completely concealed, and in its place we are left with stimulating atmosphere. The piano is still the focus here, and the drums, once again, fill in the empty space.
Heaven only knows where this album will take you if you allow it to do so. My only suggestion is that it not be behind the wheel of a car, for fear that you'll fall asleep and hit a road sign. I imagine that if you ever have the chance to take a train ride where you can view the countryside, Mosquito / See Through would be the ideal soundtrack. It has a way of blending in with its surroundings while never becoming overwhelming. And though most people might label this music as pretentious and self-indulgent, I would argue that it's some of the most stirring minimal jazz I've heard.
